THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR 6/24/09!

IT'S DARK REIGNING ALL WEEK AT THIRD EYE THIS WEEK!

DARK X-MEN BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN UTOPIA #1 BY SUPERSTAR MATT FRACTION & MODERN MASTER MARC SILVESTRI!

One of the most exciting events of this summer for us is the formation of a "Dark X-Men" team. We've been completely stoked on what's been going on in the pages of Dark Avengers every month, and to think that the X-Men books are going to get the same unique twist has us foaming at the mouth with anticipation. And, to be honest, outside of the going ons in the recent Messiah War story arc, it's been a while since Marvel's merry mutants have been properly integrated into the Marvel Universe. While we've dug what Fraction has been delivering on Uncanny, we feel that the X-Books have lacked a feeling of "importance" that some of Marvel's other key books have had for the last couple of years. Well, now, things are about to get a whole heck of a lot more "important" for the X-Men, as Norman Osborn sets his sights on reigning in the X-Men, and putting his own mutants into place. The foundations for the Dark X-Men begin here, Third Eye faithful, this Wednesday, in the pages of DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN UTOPIA #1!
And, we haven't even begun to tell you guys about the stellar creative team that's going to be kicking things off for us.. first off, we've got the amazingly talented Matt Fraction that wows us every month on Invincible Iron Man, helped re-invent Iron Fist alongside Ed Brubaker, and has been making Uncanny a solid read for the last year.. and then secondly, we've got a modern master of comic book artwork, Marc Silvestri, returning. If you're following the mainline Marvel U, then you do NOT want to miss out on Dark X-Men this summer. Everything we've seen looks stellar, and we're pumped to read it this Wednesday!

DARK AVENGERS #6 SHOWS NORMAN OSBORN BEGINNING TO CRACK! PLUS THE NEW SORCERER SUPREME IS CHOSEN IN THE PAGES OF THIS WEEK'S NEW AVENGERS #54!

Dark Reign is going to be slamming this week, and not only do we get the big Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men Utopia crossover, but we're also due for another slab of the awesomeness that is the regular DARK AVENGERS ongoing series. We've been loving every single issue of Marvel's new Dark Avengers series, and it's been consistently a fantastic read. The dynamic duo of writer Brian Michael Bendis, and Mike Deodato Jr have made the book a creative standout this year. And, lets face it, bad guys are always just plain rad. This Wednesday, the solicits promise that we're going to see Osborn beginning to lose his cool, and there's a curious looking cover image of Marvel Boy going to head with a very Symbiote-esque looking character. We know you're pumped, we know we're pumped. Make sure you grab your Dark Avengers #6 along with your DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN UTOPIA #1 this Wednesday!

And, we can't have the Dark Avengers without the New Avengers, right? Set to hit this week, we've also got the conclusion to the WHO IS THE NEW SORCERER SUPREME storyline that's been running through the pages of NEW AVENGERS. Yes, this week, the new Sorcerer Supreme is chosen, and we're on our way to finding out just what the hell the scoop on who this is going to be. This one's gonna be a key issue in the lore of the Avengers, not to mention the entire direction of the Magic characters of the Marvel Universe. DARK REIGN: ZODIAC #1 & DARK REIGN LETHAL LEGION #1 BOTH BEGIN THIS WEDNESDAY, FEATURING THE NEW FACE OF MARVEL SUPERVILLAINS! COULD ZODIAC BE THE MARVEL'S EQUIVALENT TO THE JOKER?

And if you thought that double whammy above wasn't enough, there's two new Dark Reign limited series kicking off this week which promise to give us a look at the future of the supervillain in a Marvel universe where the bad guys are the ones in charge. Dark Reign Zodiac is the debut of a new supervillain (or supervillains) who represents the "new breed of supervillain" in the world of Norman Osborn. The original Zodiac were an old supervillain team in the Avengers, where each gang member took on the symbolism of a Zodiac sign. Basically, from the sounds of this modern incarnation of the Zodiac.. it's about supervillains who can't be bought, or sold. You know, the kind who just like to see the world burn? Sound familiar? Yup, that's what we're thinking this is going to be, and to be honest... we're stoked! I mean, both companies swipe from each other all the time, and if it's good.. then it means that we see an interesting take on a modern comic book archetype, and if it's bad, well, it usually gets forgotten about. Series writer, Joe Casey, promises that the Dark Reign Zodiac miniseries will introduce this new breed of supervillain, and will definitely leave behind something that's going to stick around after Dark Reign ends. He promises it's some of the most brutal stuff he's ever written. We can't friggin wait to give it a look! Click here to read an interview with Casey about DARK REIGN ZODIAC #1!

Also dropping this week is DARK REIGN LETHAL LEGION, which I'm just as pumped for. This one is kind of an interesting little twist on the whole Dark Reign concept. What about the supervillains who don't buy into Osborn's Join Me Or Die thing? What about the supervillains that Osborn deemed you know, a little too lame to be included? Well, that's where the Lethal Legion comes in. Fans of obscure supervillains, and ironic twists on superhero (or supervillain)archetypes, take notice, this one looks like it's going to be pretty darn entertaining. The Grim Reaper, Nekra, Absorbing Man, Mr. Hyde, and last but not least.. Man-Ape, all play a big part in the formation of the Lethal Legion. And, apparently, the whole miniseries takes place in prison? Expect a gritty Oz Meets Dark Reign kind of take on the Marvel supervillains. DARK REIGN SINISTER SPIDER-MAN #1 DEBUTS NEW SERIES FOR VENOM, WITH AMAZING ARTWORK BY CHRIS BACHALO

Sick, and depraved maniacs like Mac Gargan, the current host of the Venom symbiote have never really felt the limelight until Dark Reign. Now, they're beloved heroes, and the world is their's for the taking. This new series, the Sinister Spider-Man, delivers we get to see Osborn giving the public their new Spider-Man. Not to mention, we'll be seeing how this new Spider-man deals with the fact that the symbiote's appetite is not lessening one bit. Chris Bachalo delivers some surreal, and creepy artwork that fit the character perfectly, and from what we've seen of the previews pages, this one's going to be a big surprise hit. DARK WOLVERINE BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY IN THE PAGES OF DARK WOLVERINE #75!

And, as if it wasn't already enough that we're seeing the kick-off of the Sinister Spider-man... Marvel is going to be delivering the first issue in the Dark Wolverine run. Daken's got it all now that he's a Dark Avenger, but he's also shackled with the identity he hates: his dear old dad's. How does Daken deal with the weight of being Wolverine? What moves will he make while he's granted these liberties? This one looks like it's going to be big, folks, so don't miss it. Plus, we're actually kind of surprised by how much we're digging the preview pages. We were a little iffy on the title switching over to being Dark Wolverine, but the preview pages make it look VERY interesting. Plus, the art is top notch, and that does go a long way in making a book a fun read. We know it's not OLD MAN LOGAN (still waiting on the conclusion, don't worry, folks, Marvel should have it out soon!), but it looks like a unique, and new direction for the book, and we think it's going to be worth checking out. DARK REIGN: THE HOOD #2 FOLLOWS UP AN IMPRESSIVE FIRST ISSUE!

As a character that gets our vote for one of the best villains of this decade, the new Hood limited series really left a good impression on us. Solid writing, and perfectly fitting artwork made this one into a great new limited series to fall under the Dark Reign banner, and we're excited to see the motivations of this character fleshed out. We're stoked that the series has kicked off with a stellar start, and this week, the second installment will be arriving. The Hood's getting bigger and bigger, I mean, c'mon, meetings with Dr. Doom? But, what happens when you get big? Everyone wants a piece of the pie. Click here to read more about DARK REIGN: THE HOOD #2!

DETECTIVE COMICS #854 BEGINS THE NEW DIRECTION OF THE SERIES, AS BATWOMAN GETS HER OWN SERIES & THE QUESTION GETS A SPECIAL BACK-UP FEATURE!

Man, has DC been hitting it out of the park week after week with all the new Batman books or what? I've been so impressed with all the new debuts in the line, that I just don't know where they're going to take us next. Well, actually, I do know... they're taking us into the world of Kate Kane, Batwoman, and with J.H Williams III (Promethea, Batman: The Black Glove, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) on the art chores... this one's going to be a big hit, we can already tell. First off, it's being penned by Greg Rucka, who is no slouch at scripting a good story with a strong female lead (take a look at Queen & Country or Whiteout, if you think I'm wrong), and then, the art is being provided by the EXTREMELY talented JH Williams III, who delivered the trippy settings and surroundings of the Black Glove League of Batmen storyline. Not to mention, the awesome work he's dished out over the last couple decades on books like Promethea with Alan Moore and Desolation Jones with Warren Ellis.
What's the scoop on Batwoman? Making her return in the pages of 52 (or her debut, whichever you prefer), Kate Kane, had an interesting storyline that revealed her romantic involvement with the current Question & former Gotham City Police Officer, Renee Montoya. The dynamic between the characters, and development of them throughout 52 was definitely a high point in the series. And now, in the pages of Detective Comics, we get to see Batwoman taking her role as one of Gotham City's guardians. But wait, that's not all! Renee Montoya returns as the Question in her own back-up stories in every issue of Detective Comics. So, you're getting double the awesomeoness in one comic! Click here to read an interview with JH Williams about Detective Comics, Batwoman, and also to see some concept art for the new run!

BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES CREATOR, PAUL DINI, DELIVERS HIS OTHER NEW ONGOING BATMAN SERIES, SIRENS OF GOTHAM CITY #1, THIS WEDNESDAY!

Streets of Gotham was a great read last week, and now, Mr. Paul Dini, has another new ongoing Batman series he's kicking off for us. One that's going to feature the toughest chicks in all of Gotham. Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn star in this new Birds of Prey-gone-Bad looking title that fits into the current roster of Batman:Reborn stuff. What is the agenda that these lethal ladies have, and what side of the law does it put them on? In a Gotham where there's no caped crusader looking over the innocent, and the not so innocent... they're going to do things their way, and their way only. Take a look at the preview pages, these look gorgeous, and we all know that Paul Dini excels at writing the Gotham Femme Fatales.. who can forget the memorable teaming of Harley and Ivy in Batman: the Animated Series? Click here to check out a preview of BATMAN: SIRENS OF GOTHAM CITY #1!

VIKING #2 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY AS THE EXCITING FOLLOW-UP ISSUE IN THIS BRAND NEW CULT HIT FROM IMAGE COMICS! THIS ONE IS A CLASSIC IN THE MAKING AS THE WORLD OF ORGANIZED CRIME IN THE 9th CENTURY IS EXPLORED!

One thing that's been so refreshing about the comics industry in the last few years is the ability for unknown and unseen talents to rise up out of nowhere and take the world of comics by storm. Nowhere else in any form of entertainment can you find that nowadays. Even in the world of music, it's impossible for someone who's relatively unknown to make an impact based upon their own talent alone. Nothing demonstrates this fact more than the huge success of Image's brand new VIKING ongoing series, which we're betting is going to turn out to be the next in a prestigious line of critically acclaimed series like THE WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE. Everything from the lush, painted artwork, to the unique format of the book, to the dynamite concept (it's about two brothers in the 9th century rising through the ranks of a criminal underworld.. think Sopranos with Vikings)... this book has got it all. While the first issue was a big set-up book, and moved a little slow, we URGE you guys to give this second one a shot, as things REALLY kick into high gear now that we've seen the characters introduced. If you missed out on the first issue of this one, don't sleep on this series! We still have copies of #1 in stock, so hop aboard! Click here to read a preview of VIKING #2!

GREEN LANTERN #42 CONCLUDES AGENT ORANGE THIS WEEK IN AGENT ORANGE CHAPTER 4! THE PATH TO BLACKEST NIGHT HAS BEEN SET IN THIS FANTASTIC PRELUDE!

I swear, man, there is so many good titles coming out this week, I can't keep track. The Green Lantern books from Geoff Johns have been some of the most rock solid DC Comics reading for consistently the last few years. He's been weaving one hell of a story, and setting up for some epic key moments in the panels of every issue. As the AGENT ORANGE saga comes to an explosive finale in the pages of this week's GREEN LANTERN #42, we cannot wait to see how things end up.. because you know what's next, right? BLACKEST freakin' NIGHT! Trust us, folks, you do not want to miss out on the greatness that has been the Green Lantern monthly ongoing series. We're serious, each arc has been more epic than the last, and with Blackest Night right around the corner, now is the perfect opportunity for you to catch up. And, hey, did you miss the first few chapters of AGENT ORANGE? Don't sweat it! We've got plenty of GREEN LANTERN #39, #40, and #41 in stock here at Third Eye to catch you up. Not to mention, the previous arc, RAGE OF THE RED LANTERNS, which we have also in it's entirety. So, what're you waiting for? Find out why Green Lantern and Blackest Night are some of this summer's biggest must-read titles! Click here for a preview of GREEN LANTERN #42!

SCALPED WRITER JASON AARON'S WOLVERINE: WEAPON X #3 *THE ADAMANTIUM MEN PT 3* FOLLOWS UP ON THE JAW-DROPPING CONCLUSION OF #2! THIS BRAND NEW ONGOING WOLVERINE SERIES CONTINUES TO KICK OUT THE JAMS!

Wolverine: Weapon X, the new ongoing series from SCALPED writer Jason Aaron and artist Ron Garney, has been following through on every goal it's set out to accomplish. A balls to the wall, over-the-top self-contained ongoing series for Wolverine that doesn't shy away from the bloodshed, and delivers an almost Punisher MAX-style treatment to the character. The best way I can describe it, is it's the perfect modern day spiritual successor to Chris Claremont & Frank Miller's classic Wolverine stories. Brutal, unrelenting, and dripping with all of the shadowy corners of Wolverine's world that have been going unexplored these last few years... this one has got it all. And, after reading last month's issue, with that rock-n-roll last page... we're pumped to see where things are going to go next. The saga of the Adamantium Men continues this week, as the soldiers of Strikeforce X have Wolverine trapped in the jungles of Colombia.
Jason Aaron is a talented writer, and he's delivering some fantastic story on this series, and Ron Garney's pencils are a rock solid perfect match. Click here to read Wolverine: Weapon X #3!

FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH: NIGHTMARE WARRIORS #1 DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH THREE OF HORROR'S BIGGEST ICONS DUKING IT OUT!

When Wildstorm originally rolled out the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash series... we were extremely skeptical. I mean, outside of comic books, horror movies are one of our biggest passions here at Third Eye, and lets face it, it's rare that they take fright titans like Freddy or Jason and use them appropriately in the comics, let alone, a three way triple threat of Jason.. Freddy.. and Ash. But wait, we, along with MANY others, were completely blown away by how much fun Freddy vs Jason vs Ash turned out to be. And now, this Wednesday, we get FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH: NIGHTMARE WARRIORS, providing the perfect spot for new fans to jump aboard, or fans of the original limited series to return.
Don't expect an over the top in-depth plot... this one's a bloodfest full of fun, and homages galore to horror films of the past. The Necromonicon unleashes some banished souls, including a certain serial killer by the name of Freddy. And, where does the mysterious Jason Vorhees fit into this equation? Best of all.. Ash is at the center of the madness! Don't miss out on this one, folks, it looks to be a must read! Click here to check out a preview of FREDDY VS JASON VS ASH NIGHTMARE WARRIORS #1!

SECRET WARRIORS #5 FROM BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS, JONATHAN HICKMAN & STEFANO CASELLI ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY!

The conclusion to the first arc in what's gotten our vote as one of the best new ongoing series in 2009 hits this Wednesday in the pages of SECRET WARRIORS #5! It's a bloody, and brutal battle between HAMMER, HYDRA, rogue SHIELD agents, and the Howling Commandos! This issue, and the events within, will set up key elements of the global power structure that exists within the Marvel Universe. You want to read the best damn sleeper title Marvel's got? Secret Warriors is it. While Bendis is helping plot, we can completely tell that it's really rising star newcomer Jonathan Hickman who's stealing the show with every issue. His action sequences are some of the best we've seen, and when you combine it with Caselli's cinematic art style... Secret Warriors is just plain made of win, time and time again. Why do we dig it so much? Well, it's the perfect blend of comic book superhero action with espionage and suspense. Everything is handled extremely well, and Hickman's extreme attention to detailed storytelling has given the series so many layers in just the past four issues, that we can't wait to see what he does with a full year on this bad boy! This new one ends the current arc, and sets up for some big things. We can't wait to see what!

Haven't tried the series yet? Snag up a copy of #1, and be prepared for one of the coolest reveals in comics that we've seen in a while. Click here to read a preview of SECRET WARRIORS #5!

PREDATOR #1 DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY! BLOODY BIG GAME HUNTERS GALORE AS DARK HORSE BRINGS A RETURN TO GOOD OLD FASHIONED PREDATOR STORYTELLING!

First, Dark Horse brought back ALIENS in a new series that completely blew us away. I mean, c'mon, any of us who grew up as comic fans in the past 10, 15 years, we all remember finding the random bits and pieces of ALIENS and PREDATOR story arcs on the racks. For their time, they were some of the darkest, goriest stuff we'd seen. Now, granted, this was before the shift in comics came in the late '90s, but still.. there were some damn good stories featuring both of our favorite cinematic intergalactic beasts. And, we'll be honest, a big part of why we're so stoked on these is because of the nostalgia factor. But, don't be fooled, folks.. if the first issue of the ALIENS series was any proof, we're in for a treat with the new PREDATOR limited series from DARK HORSE. The same writer who delivered the goods on ALIENS, John Arcudi, will be penning the new PREDATOR limited series. And it promises to give us two warring clans of Predators going head to head in the Third World of Earth.
C'mon, folks, you know this one sounds too cool for school, so don't miss out this Wednesday! Click here to read a preview of PREDATOR #1!

THOR #602 BRINGS THE THUNDER THIS WEDNESDAY AS ASGARD'S IN TURMOIL!

Thor's another one of those consistently fantastic ongoing series that we always see as a big treat when it pops up on our shipping this week list. And, after the events of THOR #600 set up the new direction of the series.. we're completely and totally on the edge of our seats to find out where things go next. Loki's in league with Doom, and Asgard is in turmoil. Who can Thor trust, and how will they assist him as Loki's deceitful machinations develop even further.
For those of you who're not currently reading Thor, we still have a limited amount of #600 along with #601 in stock, and it's a great jumping on point to the series. The writing on the series has been top notch as Supreme Power's J.Michael Straczynski delivers a fresh, and accessible take on the God Of Thunder while being careful to not remove him from all the awe-inspiring Asgardian settings. In fact, part of what has made Thor such a fun read for me is the unique way it makes you feel as if you're a normal person witnessing these mystical characters descending onto our Earth. JMS has captured that sense of awe perfectly, and blended it with the regular Marvel Universe to make a consistent, unique, and compelling read. Click here to check out a preview of THOR #602!

X-FORCE #16 *MESSIAH WAR CHAPTER 7* THE MESSIAH WAR CONCLUDES THIS WEEK... IS ALL DOOMED? THE END ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE!

The Messiah War has been raging on, and we've been coming back week after week for more and more. This is the perfect example of how Marvel, specifically writers like Christopher Yost & Craig Kyle, are able to take some of the slightly less cool elements of comics from 10, 15 years ago, and turn the ideas and concepts on their heads. I mean, who would've figured that Stryfe could be such a freaking epic villain? Well, this week, it's the big one, folks, the conclusion to the hottest X-Men crossover since MESSIAH COMPLEX. Messiah War concludes in the pages of X-Force #16, and we know you guys are dying to find out what the conclusion is. Why do we know this? Because WE'RE dying to find out what the conclusion is! Need to catch up? We still have limited amounts of all chapters of MESSIAH WAR in stock, so be sure to scoop up what you need here at Third Eye, and not miss out on one of the best story arcs this summer! Click here to read a preview of X-FORCE #16 *MESSIAH WAR PT 7*

TONS OF GREAT NEW TRADE PAPERBACKS HITTING THIS WEEK! CITY OF DUST, TALES OF THE SINESTRO CORPS WAR, ALL-STAR BATMAN & ROBIN,IRON FIST v.4, DRESDEN FILES STORM FRONT, MORRISON'S JLA v.2 HC, & MORE!

There's a ton of great new graphic novels and trade paperbacks hitting this Wednesday as well, so we figured we'd do a quick spotlight on some of the big ones you should keep an eye out for. And, don't forget, the FINAL CRISIS hardcover is now available at Third Eye, and man, what a beautiful book it is.. the entire 7 issue limited series, along with all the Morrison penned one-shots, all put into the proper reading order that Morrison had in mind. Great stuff! Anyways, onto what we got this week for ya!
First off, CITY OF DUST by Steve Niles from Radical Publishing delivers an awesome Blade Runner meets 1984 by way of Monster Squad story. This cyberpunk noir against a Universal monsters-esque backdrop was a big hit last year here at Third Eye, and we really can't recommend it enough.
Next up, we've got TALES OF THE SINESTRO CORPS WAR, which is the softcover collection of all the one-shots and back-ups that flesh out the sinister Sinestro Corps. Want to know the backstory on Cyborg Superman and why he has done what he's done? Want to find out what's up with Kyle Rayner and his transformation into Parallax? This book's got the answers.
Then, we can't forget the infamous ALL-STAR BATMAN & ROBIN from Frank Miller & Jim Lee, now available in softcover. This series may only come out once every blue moon, but Frank Miller's "golden age distilled into modern age" madman take on the Dark Knight keeps us coming back every time. Oh, and we can't deny that Jim Lee's gorgeous artwork has a thing or two to do with that as well. It may not be for everybody, but c'mon, who doesn't get a kick out of Batman painting himself, and dwellings yellow, while drinking Lemonaide, just to taunt the Green Lantern, cool? Trust us. It's edgy, and it's over the top, but still a fun read.
And then, criminally underrated Marvel series Iron Fist gets it's fourth installment from fantastic crime noir writer Duane Swierczynski. Find out why this perfect blend of Shaw Brothers Kung Fu, Street Fighter II, and the Marvel Universe keeps us coming back again and again.
Of course, we can't forget all the Jim Butcher fans out there. A new Dresden Files hardcover hits this week, featuring the recent STORM FRONT limited series.
And, to top it off.. we've got the second slab of killer reads in the form of Grant Morrison's JLA v.2 DELUXE edition. These oversized hardcovers collecting big chunks of Grant Morrison and Howard Porter's influential run on the Justice League are a must-read, if you haven't already. They feature a "Big 7" line-up, and I'll be honest. It wasn't until I read Morrison's JLA that I was a fan of the team. Great stuff.
