THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 8/5/09

CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #2 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY AS THE MYSTERY OF STEVE ROGER'S RETURN IS FURTHER REVEALED!

Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch's first issue of Captain America: Reborn was a very good, yet dense start to what is one of the most eagerly anticipated returns in the history of comics. It wasn't your traditional "event" book first issue, where we're treated to splash page after splash page of larger than life "holy crap" moments, but instead a very character-driven, very well-plotted opening to this series. And, that's Brubaker's style.. he builds, and builds, so when you get the big payoff.. it's worth it, all the way. All in all, we loved the first issue of Reborn, and we're eagerly awaiting the second as it looks to be delving deeper into what Steve Rogers is thinking and how he is becoming aware of being "stuck" in time. And, of course, we'll be exploring the effects that this is going to have on the Marvel Universe as a whole.

Trust us, folks, Reborn is definitely the series to be watching as far as what the future of the Marvel Universe holds. We feel that Cap's return will be playing a HUGE role in the demise of Norman Osborn (if that's where things are going). Plus, it's being written by one of the best in the biz, with Ed Brubaker, and being illustrated by one of our all-time favorites, Bryan Hitch.

WALKING DEAD VOLUME 10 WHAT WE BECOME TRADE PAPERBACK ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY!

It's always a cause for celebration here at Third Eye when a new Walking Dead trade hits the stands. I mean, c'mon... it's one of the best series going right now, and we know that a lot of you eagerly await the next one of these to hit. So, rest assured, Third Eye Faithful, we've got a big stack of these slabs of comic goodness coming in this Wednesday.
And, really, what more needs to be said? It's Walking Dead. If you're not already reading it, then you need to. Try the first trade for $10, and if you don't like it, we'll give you your $10 back! That's how much faith we have in this series. And, for those of you already following it.. well, we know we'll see you guys this Wednesday to snag up the latest installment of your favorite post-apocalyptic funnybook.

DEADPOOL: MERC WITH A MOUTH #2 - DEADPOOL VS... ZOMBIE CAVEMEN!?

Okay, first off.. the cover to this new issue of Deadpool is one of the raddest things I've ever seen. Although, the cover to Merc With A Mouth #4 with the Scarface send-up is pretty damn good too. But seriously, the JAWS send-up is priceless.
Now, onto the book.. well, it's Deadpool, and we all know how much everyone loves Deadpool. But, wait, it's not just Deadpool, it's Deadpool and his Zombified Head from the Marvel Zombieverse. Yup, Merc With A Mouth, is the new ongoing series that gives us the ultimate Marvel Universe buddy comedy... but, with lots of impalements, bullet in the brains, and more. So, yeah, it's totally killer.

And, with Deadpool cutting his way through the Savage Land to take out some of the zombified cavemen his head infected... well... lets just say we're in for some good old fashioned Merry Marvel Madness. But wait.. there's more... he's gotta deal with Hydra commando death squads too!

Either way, this new Deadpool series from crime novelist Victor Gischler (Go Go Girls of the Apocalypse) is a blast, and captures everything you love about the character into one self-contained book.

IRREDEEMABLE TRADE PAPERBACK VOLUME 1 (collecting 1-4) ONLY $9.99, AND ISSUE #5 (only .99 cents) BOTH OUT THIS WEEK! TRY THIS AMAZING SUPERMAN GONE EVIL STORY NOW! IT RULES!

One of the most exciting new ongoing series to begin this year was Mark Waid's IRREDEEMABLE. This series is brilliant, folks. If you're a fan of things like WATCHMEN, THE BOYS or WANTED, then this is right up your alley. Basically, it's the exploration of what happens when a child-like sense of what's right and what's wrong becomes warped with time, and when these perceptions are that of one of the most powerful beings on the planet. It's basically questioning the golden rule of superhero comics: that everyone who goes out to be a superhero, is truly, a good person at heart and emotionally/mentally equipped to take on such an identity.

And, man, does it ever do a good job of doing that.. the story centers around The Plutonian, who you can basically consider a Superman-like icon. He's fallen from grace due to a lack of respect and love in his world. And, after having his life shattered around him, he goes mad. He kills the family of one of his old team-mates, lobotomizes his teen sidekick with his heat vision, and kills a gang of his old villains after they attempt to kill him.

Best of all, now is the perfect time to jump on. BOOM! Publishing books are notoriously hard to keep in stock, due to the very low print runs they have, which means that finding a full run of the early issues of IRREDEEMABLE has been tough. Even here at Third Eye, where we keep a much deeper backstock of recent books. Now, with the volume 1 tradepaperback, you can hop aboard the series for only $10! The first trade collects issues 1-4, and it's only $10! And, also dropping this Wednesday is issue #5, which is only $.99 cents. So, in effect, you can get all caught up on this fantastic series for only $11. Now, for one of the best sleepers of the year coming out to offer that great of a deal... you know you need to give this one a try!

CHEW: ISSUES 1, 2, & 3 ALL IN STOCK THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE! MORE CANNIBAL DETECTIVE MADNESS!!

We're sure, by now, you've probably heard about CHEW. The first IMAGE series since WALKING DEAD to pick up this kind of heat, and internet buzz. The first issue sold out before it even hit stores, and while we were one of the few who ordered a good chunk, once they were gone.. they were gone. And, then the second print hit, and again, sold out before it hit stores. Again, we were low on our Chew ratio!

Finally, IMAGE is putting back out new printings of issues 1 and 2, as well as the newest issue in the series, #3 this week. Now, while we ordered a good deal of these, we do expect to see some allocations, so if you'd like us to hold you a copy, please get in touch so we can do that.

Now, onto the fun stuff: What the hell is Chew? Chew is a new ongoing series from IMAGE Comics that features Detective Tony Chu, who has a disorder where he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. Oh yeah, and the world it's set in is a world where all poultry has been banned due to bird flu. But, back to Detective Chu, so, lets say he eats a burger... big-time mental images of slaughterhouses. Now, as a homicide detective, this unusual skill comes in handy... and this leads into him having to nibble on a corpse every now and again.

All we can say folks is Chew is one strange, and interesting book. Well-written, and quirky yet awesome art make for a blast. Don't miss out a third time on jumping aboard this great series, trust us, it's totally Third Eye Recommended. To read a preview of issue #1, click here.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #601 KICKS OFF "RED-HEADED STRANGER" STORY ARC AS SPIDER-MAN BECOMES KICK-ASS AGAIN!

Amazing Spider-man #601 kicks off one of the most anticipated story arcs in Spidey history... The Return of Mary Jane. Before we get into details, all we can say is that Spidey #600 was a great read, with a vicious new take on Doc Ock, as well as the very last page bringing back ol' MJ. Now, the real story kicks off as the Return of Mary Jane is explained, and the road to the upcoming Gauntlet storyline is paved (basically, this year, we'll see all of Spidey's rogues being retooled, and revitalized to come back and whip on him month after month.. hence the name Gauntlet).
But, what's the big news? Well, Brian Michael Bendis and Joe Quesada have a very special story in the pages of #601 that highlights the relationship between Peter Parker and Jessica Jones that was revealed in NEW AVENGERS #51.

HULK #13 FEATURING THE DARK AVENGERS HITS THIS WEEK! A VERY SPECIAL DARK REIGN TIE-IN ISSUE! IT'S ARES vs. HULK?!

Okay, so now that the whole identity of Bruce Banner and the Green Hulk are in question, and the Red Hulk is still on the loose, things are about to get very interesting in this very special Dark Reign tie-in. The Dark Avengers are going to be heading out to check the status of Banner for Osborn, but what happens when they get pulled into the midst of the craziness that's been surrounding the Hulk family for the last couple of years? Well.. we imagine something that involves lots of smashing, and lots of blood. Especially when Ares, the God of War, is his chosen messenger.
And as per usual, we're guaranteed some of the most gorgeous interior art around today courtesy of Ed McGuiness. And, lets face it, the joy in the current HULK run is the ridiculousness that each issue brings. It's bigger than life, and fun in that old school way we remember comics being when we were kids. It's the one book where it's okay to not make sense all the time, because, lets face it.. it's the Hulk. :)

JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE #2HITS THIRD EYE THIS WEDNESDAY! THIS NEW JLA LIMITED SERIES IS AMAZINGLY GOOD!

WOW! What a great read the first issue of this limited series setting up the new Justice League turned out to be! The creative team is great, with James Robinson (of STARMAN fame) providing a stellar approach to the story and extremely talented newcomer Mauro Cascioli blowing us away with his gorgeous painted interiors, this book has got some powerhouse talent on it.

And, not only that, but it was just a plain good Justice League story. Rock solid characterization, a nice even mix of heavy hitter top tier characters with lesser known obscurities, and a great plot kicking off the series... this one is definitely a book to snag if you've been looking for a good old fashioned Justice League series.

Not to mention, this limited series is supposed to be leading into next year's new Justice League ongoing series, which has had rumors of being helmed by GEOFF JOHNS and JIM LEE (but again, rumors are rumors).

THOR WRITER, J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI, DEBUTS AT DC COMICS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH THE BEGINNING OF HIS RED CIRCLE CHARACTER REVIVAL ONE-SHOTS WITH RED CIRCLE: HANGMAN #1!
Now, before we get rolling on this... let me start off by saying that even I was a little bit stumped on just who or what the hell RED CIRCLE characters were. They looked familiar, like I'd seen them somewhere previously, but I couldn't place it. But, then, combing through the Third Eye archives, I found an old Archie Comics superhero book.. and BAM! That's what it was. So, let me start off by saying that the Red Circle characters were originally non-Archie related characters that ARCHIE COMICS published in the '70s and '80s.

Now, why are we excited about the Red Circle characters? Well, critically acclaimed writer J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI is going to be re-inventing and reviving these characters for use in the DC Universe continuity. This is the man responsible for making THOR awesome again, for the modern classic RISING STARS, for the brutal MAX comic SUPREME POWER, and more. We have faith that he's going to be instilling some very interesting concepts into these characters, and really fleshing them out. The characters themselves, have a very pulpy feel, and this could really add an interesting new element into DC's universe. Straczynski has already proven with Marvel's The Twelve that he can take old characters and put an interesting new spin on them, so we're eager to see what awaits us.

And, this week, things get kicked off with the debut of RED CIRCLE: HANGMAN #1. This one features art from Tom Derenick and Bill Sienkiewicz, who have shown they can deliver some moody, sinister art time and time again. Clickhereto read more about the RED CIRCLE project.

TRANSMETROPOLITAN & IGNITION CITY WRITER, WARREN ELLIS, DEBUTS ONE-SHOT
FRANKENSTEIN'S WOMB THIS WEDNESDAY!
It's no secret. We're big Warren Ellis fans here at Third Eye. The man has written so many of our favorite comics, we wouldn't even know where to begin when starting on our Ellis Top 5. One of the areas we feel Ellis excels at though is weird science, and with this week's one-shot story, Frankenstein's Womb, it looks like he's exploring the worlds of weird science, and pulp horror full-force.

This is not only a story about the actual physical birth of Frankenstein, but the birth of the Frankenstein story, weaving truth with fiction, and bringing Mary Shelley as a primary character, this one looks to be a bone-chillingly good read, as she explores Castle Frankenstein, which was occupied 100 years earlier by a theoligist and alchemist obsessed with transferring the human soul into dead bodies.

From the creepy art, to the intriguing plot concept, we're stoked on this one. Be sure to check out it this Wednesday at Third Eye. Clickhere to read more about FRANKENSTEIN'S WOMB!

ABSOLUTION #1 DEBUTS FROM LAW & ORDER SVU SCREENWRITER CHRISTOS GAGE. "DEXTER" MEETS "GREEN LANTERN" AVATAR MADNESS AS A SUPERCOP GOES OFF THE DEEP END!

The preview of Absolution in Absolution #0 was promising, but we're really eager to see how this brand new AVATAR series (the publishers of NO HERO, CROSSED and more) turns out. The concept? Basically, in a world where all the police departments are composed of super-humans, what happens when one of them gets fed up with the justice system and starts taking the law into his own hands? Well, he becomes a supercharged serial killer, taking the law into his own hands.
This one is a nice mix of the TV show DEXTER with the super-cop concepts of GREEN LANTERN, put through the ultraviolent filters of AVATAR PRESS.
Give it a look this week! Clickhere to read more aboutABSOLUTION #1!

THE LATEST IN MARVEL NOIR: LUKE CAGE NOIR #1 DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY!

The Marvel Noir series have been kind of hit and miss, with series like DAREDEVIL NOIR and WOLVERINE NOIR providing surprise hits, and then books like X-MEN NOIR fizzling out towards the end. So, it's always a mixed bag with the Noir stuff. We're personally very excited for the Luke Cage Noir series, because the creative team behind it has built a pretty solid rep on doing noir-influenced superhero stories.
Plus, the general concept of it being set between the end of the Great Depression, but before the end of Prohibition, makes for some very intriguing story ideas.
And, to be honest, the artwork in this one looks incredible!

SECRET WARRIORS WRITER JONATHAN HICKMAN'S TIME-TRAVEL EPIC PAX ROMANA NOW AVAILABLE IN TRADE PAPERBACK!

Okay, it's safe to say that Jonathan Hickman is one of our favorite new talents to rise up in this decade. We've really enjoyed his work since discovering him on Nightly News, and everything he's done since has been dynamite. He's currently been wowing us month in, and month out with the Marvel ongoing series SECRET WARRIORS (which is the best Nick Fury comic since the days of Jim Steranko!).
This week, the arrival of Hickman's Pax Romana graphic novel is a pretty big deal for us. This story took a long time to finish, so reading it all at once, will really enrich the experience. What's so darn cool about Pax Romana?
It's set in the future where monotheism is on the wane in the East and the West. The vatican has funded a secret time travel experiment, and goes back in time to get a Roman army of gladiators. Of course, everything goes horribly wrong, and turns into a very horrifying story.
Highly recommended. Click here to read about PAX ROMAN
