This Week's Highlights @ Third Eye For Wednesday 8/26/09!

THREE MUST-READ BATMAN TITLES OUT THIS WEDNESDAY!

BATMAN & ROBIN #3 FROM GRANT MORRISON & FRANK QUITELY CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY! THE BEST BAT-BOOK IN A VERY, VERY LONG TIME!!!

While we've been loving nearly all of the new BATMAN:REBORN titles that have come out in the wake of Bruce Wayne's disappearance, we feel that Batman and Robin by Morrison and Quitely (the team behind ALL-STAR SUPERMAN) is THE BEST. Streets of Gotham ROCKS, the core BATMAN title is great, DETECTIVE COMICS wows us month after month, but it's BATMAN AND ROBIN that we feel is the real heavyweight of the line. And, obviously, you guys feel the same way, as it's the one that everyone's always asking about the next issue. Well, folks, I am more than happy to tell you that this Wednesday, we're going to be seeing the arrival of the brand-spanking new BATMAN AND ROBIN #3! The final showdown between Professor Pyg and the Circus Of Crime is set to occur, and we couldn't be more excited. This one wraps up the official first case of the new Dynamic Duo, and sets the stage for their continuing adventures.

Why do we like Batman and Robin so damn much? Well, simply put.. it is pure, 100% comic book cool. It's self-contained enough for anyone to enjoy, while at the same time maintaining ties to the current events of the Batman books. The sleek, fresh and post-modern take on Nightwing as the Caped Crusader and Damien as Robin has added a whole new dynamic to the series. The new villains being introduced have actually been ruthlessly awesome to the point where we hope they show up again in the future (and how often do you see ANY new characters introduced that really impress you that much?). And, overall, the writing, and the artwork, make for one seamless, fantastic comic book experience. If you're not reading Batman and Robin, you are missing out on one of the most exciting Bat-titles hitting the stands.

Did you miss the first couple of issues? Don't worry! We have plenty of #1 and #2 in stock at Third Eye for you to catch up!

DETECTIVE COMICS #856 - THE ADVENTURES OF BATWOMAN CONTINUE, AND WE'RE STILL SUPER IMPRESSED ON THIS NEW DIRECTION!

This one took us by surprise when we saw the first issue. And, while the story is fantastic, well-written, and drenched in some great noir/detective-style storytellling... we have to admit, it's the gorgeous art of JH WILLIAMS III that's really pulling us back with each issue. Detective Comics, as of issue #854 (which is the first issue of the new direction, and the one you want to jump aboard with), switched it's focus from being about Batman to following the adventures of the mysterious, new Batwoman. Batwoman is Katherine Kane (who first appeared in the jawdropping 52 maxiseries from DC) as she investigates the new Church of Crime in Gotham City that's risen up during the absence of Batman. There's a strong focus on character development in the series, and as such, Batwoman and the rest of her cast (as well as Bat-title standbys) are becoming very fleshed out as characters. It's actually one of the cooler ways of seeing how an individual balances a normal life with the strains of being a vigilante. While we've seen this done before, many times, it just feels a little fresher and realer this go around.
Now, I can't forget to go into detail about the best part of it all... the artwork! JH Williams III delivers not just amazing, jaw-dropping page after page of art, but he is actually doing brand new things with comic book art in this series. He shifts styles, when Katherine is in Batwoman mode, it's very fragmented, very dramatic, very dark, very intense, and over the top. And, then when she comes into her secret identity, it shifts into a much more muted, subtle, and softer style. This use of contrasting styles to tell the story works so well with the character, and actually adds a whole new dynamic to the whole dual identity thing of being a superhero.
If you can't already guess it, folks, we're big fans of this current run here at Third Eye. If you need to catch up, we still have plenty of issue #854 (part 1), and 855 (part 3) in stock.

BATMAN: WIDENING GYRE #1 FROM FILM-MAKER (CLERKS, MALLRATS, JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK) KEVIN SMITH ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! THE LAST BATMAN STORY SMITH WILL EVER WRITE!

Normally, when celebrities come into the world of comics.... their books suck. It's nothing personal, and yes, there are exceptions (Umbrella Academy, Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, and probably a few I'm forgetting), but let me just say we usually get way more Nick Cage's Voodoo Child then we do Umbrella Academy. However, one thing that has always remained true: Kevin Smith can write a damn good funnybook. And, it's probably because the man is still a big fan of comics to this day. Now, while we dug his Daredevil run (available collected as DAREDEVIL: GUARDIAN DEVIL), we feel that Smith does his best work when he's playing in DC Comics's sandbox. And, after last year's Batman Cacophony, which we were actually pretty damn impressed with, Smith has returned to the world of Batman with this new BATMAN: WIDENING GYRE miniseries.

Batman: Widening Gyre is a six issue limited series, featuring Bruce Wayne Batman (so the story either takes place before or after the events of BATMAN:REBORN). What we do know is that Kevin Smith has called it his magnum opus Batman story, and it will be the last Batman story he ever writes. We also know that Smith plans to introduce a brand new character into the DC Universe, one that's a hero this time, who he's hoping will play a large part in the DCU for years to come.

What's the story on Widening Gyre? Bats runs into a new vigilante, who he decides to take under his wing, as the story takes this new character and Batman through the entire Batman mythos, tons of Rogues, DCU guest-stars, and more all make this one a story that we're gonna really dig. We feel it's going to be one of those Batman limited series that stands on it's own for many years. Kevin Smitth has gone on record as saying this will be the LAST Batman story he ever writes, as he doesn't feel he can top this one.

Two Big Blackest Night Books Cast Their Dark Shadow This Wednesday!

BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #1 - TERRA RISES FROM THE GRAVE! AND, THE UNDEAD TEEN TITANS TEAM FORMS! FEATURING ARTWORK BY THE AMAZING ED BENES!

Blackest Night has been knocking it out of the park over and over again with delivering high quality tie-in books to the main core series. Normally, in big events, the tie-in books suffer, but this has not been the case with BLACKEST NIGHT. We're not sure if it's the fact that GEOFF JOHNS is directly overseeing and helping plot ALL of the tie-ins, or what, but they have really been delivering top notch material week in, and week out. And, with this week's BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS #1, the crew at DCU has done something that hasn't been done in a long time for us here at Third Eye: gotten us excited about the Titans again!
In this three issue limited series, the Blackest Night has brought back many of the Titan's dead team-mates. And, as everyone who is a little familiar with DC knows, Titans usually drop like flies. What looks to be cool about the Blackest Night Titans limited series is how it will have the most horrific scary movie feel out of all the Blackest Night tie-ins, which is saying a lot. The way it's described is as a horror movie on paper. You stoked? I'm stoked.
Ontop of all that, it's got artwork by the incredibly talented Ed Benes, who is on his way to super stardom. AND, it's got nasty undead Terra running around.. how rad is that?

GREEN LANTERN #45 - BLACKEST NIGHT CONTINUES IN THE PAGES OF THE MOST INTEGRAL GL BOOK! THE UNDEAD SINESTRO CORPS STRIKES AND MORE!

Now, with big events, there's always one book to follow outside of the core limited series that is a MUST-READ. And, of course, the flagship GREEN LANTERN title is the book to keep up with while following BLACKEST NIGHT. The prologue in issue #43 was FANTASTIC, and an essential piece for those of you loving Blackest Night. The Martian Manhunter throwdown in issue #44 was a nice gap-filler between BLACKEST NIGHT #1 and BLACKEST NIGHT #2. And, now, this week, GREEN LANTERN #45, features a very special issue (taking place in between BLACKEST NIGHT #2 and BLACKEST NIGHT #3) where the members of the SINESTRO CORPS who died during the SINESTRO WARS have returned as Black Lanterns... but.. also Sinestro Corps members? We think? Either way, it looks AWESOME, and we can't wait to see how it develops.
So, whatever you do, folks, do not miss out on this week's GREEN LANTERN #45! Big things are happening, and of course, it's by the always amazing creative team of GEOFF JOHNS (Blackest Night writer) and the super-talented DOUG MAHNKE!

HULK #14 KICKS OFF AWESOME CODE RED STORYLINE FEATURING DEADPOOL, RED HULK, PUNISHER, ELEKTRA AND MORE GOING UP AGAINST X-FORCE!

We keep on saying it, but man, Hulk is a fun book. Bigger than life artwork in every issue, and some of the most ridiculous, smashmouth storytelling in comics. Sometimes you just want to geek out and let the (ultraviolence loving) kid in yourself out. This week, a brand new story arc begins in the pages of HULK #14, and we gotta say, we are pumped. First off, we get the same standard of incredible artwork we've become accustomed to with the Hulk book. Secondly, we're going to be getting a super-violent, super-fun, and super-over-the-top storyline by the name of CODE RED.
What is Code Red? Well, Code Red is the name of the motley group consisting of Red Hulk, DEADPOOL, The Punisher, Elektra, Thundra, and the Crimson Dynamo. Why is this diverse grouping of characters happening? Well, that's what we're going to find out in the pages of HULK #14 this week. But, hold on, it gets even better... it's this team of killers and crazies going head to head with X-FORCE. That's right, folks, you're gonna see a RED HULK vs. WOLVERINE showdown that's gonna be talked about for years to come.

Dark Reign Delivers Some Serious Awesomeness This Week with..

DARK AVENGERS #8 *DARK X-MEN UTOPIA PT 5!* CONTINUES THE DARK X-MEN SAGA!

Dark Avengers has been one of the biggest hits of the year here at Third Eye. The concept of villains posing as heroes may not be a new one, but the execution of it in this storyline has made it a consistent must-read. The dynamics of seeing how these characters interact with one another has made it a very compelling read. Plus, who doesn't love seeing characters like Bullseye masquerading as Hawkeye or Venom pretending to be Spider-man? It's just plain entertaining.
Earlier this year, Marvel kicked off their big summer storyline involving the X-Men with the UTOPIA (aka DARK X-MEN SAGA) storyline. Basically, Osborn has expanded his reach from having just his Avengers to having his own personal team of X-Men to handle things in the mutant arena. And, we have to say, this has been one hell of a great read. One of the best crossovers we've read in a while.
Now, this Wednesday, as we near the end of the UTOPIA saga (which concludes in next month's DARK X-MEN/DARK AVENGERS UTOPIA EXODUS), big things transpire in the pages of DARK AVENGERS. Just when it looks like the X-Men are down and out, they're going to be going for the throat as they strike at Osborn, HAMMER, and the Dark X-Men all at once. This looks to be the issue where the action really kicks into high gear, and big prices are paid on both sides of the battle.
Could this be what's leading up to the mysterious series of DARK REIGN: THE LIST one-shots scheduled for Fall? We think so.

NEW AVENGERS #56 DELIVERS BIG THINGS IN THE REALM OF DARK REIGN AS THE SECOND ISSUE OF THE CURRENT STORY ARC HITS THIS WEDNESDAY!

Issue #55 of NEW AVENGERS was AWESOME. We really dig Stuart Immonen coming aboard as the new artist, and we feel that his fresh and different style helps add a new dynamic to the book. The current storyline where one of the Hood's thugs has figured out a way to drain the powers of both Dark Avengers AND New Avengers is shaping up to be pretty good. We're actually excited about the possibility of an uprising against the Hood, as we feel it could really lead to some interesting stories.
We just got done reading through about half of the issue, and while we haven't yet seen the big dramatic event that really turns the tide in regards to a lot of what's happening with Dark Reign, we can say that this is one hell of an action-packed issue. TONS of brawling, tons of supervillains, and tons of Avengers make this one a really fun read.

FLASH REBIRTH #4 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, CONTINUING GEOFF JOHNS'S (BLACKEST NIGHT WRITER) AMAZING RE-INVENTION OF THE FLASH!

Geoff Johns is a busy man. He's writing the fantastic new ADVENTURE COMICS, the epic BLACKEST NIGHT, his consistently great GREEN LANTERN run, and, and, he finds time to bring Barry Allen back into the DCU and totally breathe fresh new life into the character. Now, personally, I've never been a huge Barry Allen fan. I grew up with Wally West as my generation's Flash. However, Geoff Johns has done a fantastic job of fleshing ou Allen's character and making him as three dimensional as Wally was made. You have to remember, Barry died during Crisis on Infinite Earths, and that was before we really had high concept modern storytelling in comics. Character development was important, but nowhere near what it is now. And, because of this, we're really becoming big Barry Allen fans.
Plus, it doesn't hurt that Wally West and his title had gotten very stale as time went on. I mean, super-kids? C'mon... The Flash character needed some fresh life, and Johns has been providing it with FLASH: REBIRTH. Not to mention, Ethan Van Sciver (artist of the SINESTRO CORPS WARS) delivers some of the most jaw-dropping art we're seeing in superhero comics these days.
Did you miss the first three issues of REBIRTH? Don't sweat it, we've still got plenty of #1, #2, and #3 all in stock.

INCREDIBLE HULK #601 - THE GREEN HULK HAS RETURNED! AND ARIEL OLIVETTI COMES ABOARD AS THE SERIES ARTIST, and PLANET HULK WRITER GREG PAK COMES ON AS SERIES WRITER!

The Incredible Hulk has finally returned, and now for all of you who've been yearning for the return of Bruce Banner and his green-skinned alter ego, it's here. It's Bruce Banner, and Skaar, the Son of Hulk, as they're both on the run... cause, isn't that what always happens to Hulks? They're on the run? Seriously though, it looks like it should be a pretty solid series. The preview pages look GORGEOUS, and it looks like Hulk may be the character Olivetti was born to draw. Plus, we're getting promised a WHOLE lot of smash.. so, what more could we ask for?

DEADPOOL #14 *WAVE OF MUTILATION PT 2* - IT'S DEADPOOL.. AS A PIRATE.. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?

What's better than one dose of Deadpool a month? Well, how about two doses of Deadpool in a month. Seriously though, you can't go wrong with Pirate Deadpool. The first issue of this brand new story arc, DEADPOOL #13 *WAVE OF MUTILATION PT 1* serves as a perfect jumping on point, and we got a quick conclusion coming here with issue #14 hitting the stands this Wednesday. I mean, I wish I could say more, but: Deadpool. As. A. Pirate. Does more need to really be said? Either way, it's awesome, and holds up to the same high standard that the rest of the Deadpool books do.

ATTN SCOTT PILGRIM FANS: BRAND NEW IMAGE SERIES, KING CITY, DEBUTS THIS WEEK WITH KING CITY #1!

If there's one thing we can really appreciate here at Third Eye, it's the quirky, video game-obsessed surreal world of Scott Pilgrim. In fact, we're a big fan of the style Scott Pilgrim's done in, as it's part of a new wave of comic book creators who're taking influence from both American, and International Comics, as well as all sorts of aspects of Pop Culture. Other series that have kind of fallen under the same umbrella as the (soon to be a motion picture) Scott Pilgrim are WONTON SOUP (a famous chef becomes an intergalactic space trucker), and SHARKNIFE (think Ultraman set in a modern day Big City).
However, this week, we get to see the debut of one of what feel is going to be the best, KING CITY.
King City is a new series from IMAGE COMICS where the world of reality and not-so-reality blend seamlessly. You got a guy who falls in love with an alien, and then has to betray her. Another guy who turns into the drug he's addicted to. And, then a pet cat that can become any weapon or tool you need... hence, a copy cat. King City's a world of weirdness, zaniness, and awesomeness.
Fueled by the same video game-influenced hyper-reality that fuels Scott Pilgrim, we highly recommend King City, and guarantee it's something you're gonna dig. If you grew up on Konami codes, and Big Trouble in Little China.. you need to give KING CITY a shot!

And this week, a double whammy from one of our favorite new writers, JONATHAN HICKMAN!

SECRET WARRIORS #7 BEGINS BRAND NEW STORY ARC THIS WEDNESDAY: GOD OF FEAR, GOD OF WAR PT 1!

Secret Warriors has been one of the best new Marvel titles of this year. It's definitely the sleeper hit of the year, in our opinion. This book, featuring Nick Fury and his group of renegade operatives (mostly the sons and daughters of various superheroes and supervillains that are not on the record as having powers), captures everything you want out of a SHIELD-centric book. It captures the whole espionage vibe perfectly. And, Jonathan Hickman, is one of the best new writers we've seen come up in a while, and with Secret Warriors being he and Brian Michael Bendis's brainchild, it really shows the quality of the storytelling.
Now, if you haven't hopped aboard yet, now's the perfect time, as a new story arc is beginning in the pages of SECRET WARRIORS #7, subtitled GOD OF FEAR, GOD OF WAR. Yes, it's the Secret Warriors throwing down with the Dark Avengers and the Thunderbolts as Norman Osborn and Baron Von Strucker combine forces to get rid of Nick Fury once and for all. And of course, there's gonna be a very interesting father and son meeting in this arc, as you can tell from the subtitle.

FANTASTIC FOUR #570 - JONATHAN HICKMAN & DAVE EAGLESHAM HELM A NEW DIRECTION FOR THE TITLE! GREAT JUMPING ON POINT! REED RICHARDS HAS 101 WAYS TO FIX THE WORLD!

That Dark Reign FF limited series from a few months ago actually turned out to be pretty awesome. We were expecting some serious suckitude, but, man, Hickman really delivered big on it. In fact, the main reason we had some hope it might be good, was the fact that Hickman was writing it. And, who is Jonathan Hickman? He's one of Marvel's young gun writers who is on his way to great things. He started out doing some very ground-breaking work with creator-owned stuff like NIGHTLY NEWS, TRANSHUMAN and PAX ROMANA, and then moved onto doing the sleeper hit SECRET WARRIORS. And, now, he's been given the reigns of one of Marvel's most guarded titles, the FANTASTIC FOUR. And, man, judging from the preview pages, this one is gonna be a heck of a run! First off, the artwork is AMAZING. When did Eaglesham get so friggin' good? I remember him way back in the day when he was filling in for Ron Garney on some of Waid's Captain America stuff... and I mean, he was all right, but wow, his stuff really looks sharp! Secondly, it's Hickman, and Hickman is very good at combining high-energy action with lots of good mad science-fiction, which is the perfect match for the Fantastic Four. And, third, in the first five pages, they've brought back the Wizard... classic Fantastic Four villains=win. FOURTH, the hook on this one is awesome: in Civil War, it was revealed that Reed Richards had 101 ways to fix the world.. and now, he's trying to put them into use.

We're stoked.

SECRET SIX: UNHINGED TP COLLECTS THE FIRST SEVEN ISSUES OF GAIL SIMONE'S AWESOME NEW SECRET SIX ONGOING SERIES!

Last year (before DC really started dishing out the killer titles), there wasn't a lot of new ongoing series popping out of DC that really grabbed us. Now, of course, that's changed this summer with all the killer new books coming out of the GL lines, Batman, and with stuff like CRY FOR JUSTICE, but, a year ago... well, that's a long time in comic time. One of the books that really grabbed us, and impressed us was Gail Simone's brand new SECRET SIX series. Simone manages to perfectly capture an entertaining supervillain team-up dynamic. Basically, the Secret Six are a suicide squad of sorts who take the missions no one else will... cause they have to. Composed of Bane, Rag-doll, Deadshot and more, it's a very quirky, very interesting team.
