THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 11/4/09

GET YOUR YELLOW LANTERN (SINESTRO CORPS) RING THIS WEDNESDAY WITH PURCHASE OF DOOM PATROL #4 AT THIRD EYE COMICS! SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED, SO DON'T MISS OUT! THEY'RE FINALLY HERE!

They're finally here! Ever since Blackest Night began back in July, and a legion of Third Eye Faithful donned the Black Lantern rings, we've all been awaiting the arrival of the rest of the Lantern Corps. And, when it was announced that Third Eye would be bringing them your way, then it just became a question of when. Well, this Wednesday, when you purchase Doom Patrol #4 *BLACKEST NIGHT tie-in*, you will receive one free Yellow Lantern ring. This is the ring that the Sinestro Corps members wear.

This is the first in the series of Power Rings that we're going to be giving out in coordination with several Blackest Night tie-ins this winter. These rings are definitely some of the most in-demand items I have seen, and supplies are limited, so make sure you snag your's this week!

But, lets not let the ring overshadow the book it's coming with. The new incarnation of Doom Patrol from Justice League (the infamous Booster Gold/Blue Beetle/Guy Gardner line-up) writer Keith Giffen has been a pretty solid approach to the classic team of misfits. And, it doesn't hurt that the Kevin Maguire Metal Men back-up feature is friggin' cool as hell!

Of course, the question is how does Blackest Night cast it's shadow on the Doom Patrol? No one has more skeletons in their closet than the strange band of outcast superheroes, Doom Patrol. The question is how many of those skeletons can we expect to see returning as Black Lanterns? Words is this tie-in is going to be pretty solid, and Giffen is going to use it as an opportunity to clear up some of the Doom Patrol continuuity.

And, it comes with a sweet Yellow Ring. :)

Also, we'll be running a promotion from this Wednesday 11/4 to next Wednesday 11/11, that when you come in wearing your Yellow Lantern ring, you can get 20% off ANY Doom Patrol-related items (this includes the amazing Grant Morrison run that's available in trade, as well as the classic Showcase volumes, and even the recent issues of the current run!). So, if your interest of Doom Patrol gets piqued, make sure to take advantage of this offer!

HAUNT #2 FOLLOWS UP THE FIRST ISSUE OF WALKING DEAD & INVINCIBLE WRITER ROBERT KIRKMAN & COMICS LEGEND TODD MCFARLANE'S SMASH HIT NEW SERIES! LIMITED QUANTITIES OF #1 STILL AVAILABLE

The first issue of HAUNT was a smash hit right out the gate. It went out of print the day it hit comic shops, that's how big the book was. And, rightfully so, it ruled! I mean, c'mon... you take names like Robert Kirkman (of Walking Dead and Invincible fame) and comics legend Todd McFarlane (the man who built a toy empire after defining '90s comics with Spawn), and you're bound to get some real comic book magic.

What's the scoop on Haunt? Haunt's the story of Daniel Kilgore, a priest who has been haunted by the ghost of his brother Kurt, a black ops soldier who was killed in the line of duty. Kurt posesses his brother, and voila, you get Haunt... which resembles a kind of super-natural looking Spider-man-type character. The first issue was a nice set-up issue, but you know Kirkman.. the punch doesn't usually come until issue #2, or #3, when he delivers the swerve. And that's what we're waiting for. We will say that we loved the first issue, and the visceral thrill we got of the ultra-violent story. I mean, it's well-paced, gorgeously drawn, and violent as all get out... what more could you want out of a bigger than life ectoplasmic superhero book?

For those of you who missed out on the first issue, we still have a few first printings left, and we will have second prints of #1 in as well on Wednesday. So, if you want to catch up, Third Eye's got you covered. Don't miss HAUNT #2 this week!

CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #4 - DR.DOOM, NORMAN OSBORN, AND THE RED SKULL... ALL WORKING TOGETHER? CAP REBORN #4 TIES THINGS TIGHTER INTO THE CURRENT CONTINUITY!

Captain America Reborn has been a bit of a sleeper. This limited series had a nice, steady build in story which has kept us hooked. Brubaker didn't cheap out by throwing senseless shocks, and twists our way... instead, he focused on sticking to his story, and building a compelling world and reason for why Steve Rogers death isn't all that it seems. The combination of his well-told story with Bryan Hitch's amazing artwork is what really sets REBORN apart from other "(Insert Dead Hero here) Returns" storylines.

And, the best part about all of this, has been how they've used Reborn to slowly weave the world of Captain America back closer to the mainline 616 Marvel continuity. Not that Cap was ever outside of continuity, but you have to admit, it was often frustrating to read the title, and get that sense that the events impacting the rest of the Marvel Universe didn't impact Cap. Don't get me wrong, I do love a good self-contained story, and I feel that Brubaker's run on Cap has been one of the best runs on the character.. ever.. but, when it comes to Marvel, I enjoy the sense of an overall universe where everything is connected.

Anyways, the story of Cap Reborn began in the pages of CAPTAIN AMERICA #600 (still available in limited quantities here at Third Eye), and continued on in CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #1. See, the gun used to kill Steve Rogers, didn't kill him, but instead froze him in space and time. Sharon Carter, after being captured by the Red Skull, was used as part of a device to "unstick" him from time. Problem is, when Rogers becomes "unstuck"... no one knows where in time he is. And, so we see flashbacks throughout the series of Steve fighting during World War II, knowing he's not in the right place, but going through the actions anyway, almost like he has no control over himself.
As you can tell, this is not your typical back to life story.. and definitely has some deep ramifications on the world of the Marvel Universe.

The rumor going around about Marvel's big event next year, titled SEIGE, is that the holy trinity of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor will be reunited. But, with Bucky wearing the shield, who will be the next Cap? And, that's why we think what plays out in the pages of REBORN will be important in regards to the overall Marvel Universe.

And, ontop of all this.. it's a hell of a good read. If you haven't yet hopped aboard, don't worry, we still have the previous three issues, as well as the prelude in CAPTAIN AMERICA 600 to catch you up.

LOBO HIGHWAY TO HELL #1 WRITTEN BY ANTHRAX'S SCOTT IAN AND ILLUSTRATED BY MAXX CREATOR SAM KEITH RETURNS THE MAIN MAN THIS WEDNESDAY!

You read it right, folks... Scott Ian, of the classic thrash crossover band Anthrax, will be penning the two-issue return of everyone's favorite bastich, LOBO. And, picking up the art chores is the legendary Maxx creator, SAM KEITH.

Now, it's been years.. and, I mean, YEARS, since Lobo's had his own title. In fact, I think the last time he had a starring role was in the Lobo/Authority Holiday Hell crossover a few years back. And, c'mon... if a '90s icon like Deadpool can come back to superstardom, then why not the original bad boy, Lobo?

Two issues of the most obscene, most violent, most vile, and most beer-guzzling Lobo story you'll ever want to see as Scott Ian takes Lobo to the depths of Hell. A hilarious and horrifying tale of mayhem and murder that's guaranteed to make you smile.

Check it out this Wednesday at Third Eye!

ASTONISHING X-MEN #32 *EXOGENETIC PT 2*ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! WANT TO HOP ON? ISSUE #31 (STILL IN STOCK) IS THE PERFECT JUMPING ON POINT!

Okay, let me start by saying that ASTONISHING X-MEN #31 was AWESOME. I'll be honest, the Ghost Boxes storyline didn't really do it for me. I just couldn't get down with Bianchi's art. But, dude... the addition of Jiminez to the book, along with a fresh new story arc that has WARREN ELLIS (Ignition City, Transmetropolitan, ect ect) applying his weird science outlook to the Brood.... it's just what the doctor ordered.

What I liked about the new story arc that began in issue #31?

1. It's a perfect jumping on point to the book if you haven't picked up a copy of Astonishing, or hell, any X-Men book in forever. Right away, it's familiar territory, with Storm, Cyclops, Beast, and Wolverine all being badass in the way you know and love them.

2. Phil Jiminez's art carries the high-paced tension that Ellis's story weaves so well, that you can almost hear the sound of space shuttles incinerating in the earth's atmosphere.

3. In less than three pages, we're shown why S.W.O.R.D are total badasses, and what their job in the Marvel Universe is.

4. Is action packed from beginning to end, with a stellar cliffhanger at the end.

So, we're pretty stoked to see where things go in the second part this week in issue #32. If you haven't yet picked up issue #31 EXOGENETIC PT 1, then snag a copy this week at Third Eye. It's definitely worth checking out, and is the perfect jumping on spot for those of you who want to read just one X-Book, and get the characters you know and love.

BLACK WIDOW DEADLY ORIGIN #1 BRINGS THE BLACK WIDOW BACK TO THE SPOTLIGHT OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE!

The Black Widow has always been a character I've dug. I mean, I'm a sucker for espionage stories, and I love thoes morally grey characters where you never know where they stand. Plus, she's a woman that can really kick some ass, and without the use of any real superpowers... which is pretty damn cool. Marvel, of course, is going to be bringing the Black Widow back to the limelight, partially due in part to her role in Iron Man II this summer, as well as partially due in part to her growing involvement in the world of the mainline Marvel Universe, and all the shadowy things happening in it these days.

Anyways, judging from the preview pages, this one looks to be a hard-hitting, gritty espionage story that takes Natalia back to the cold streets of Moscow and puts her in the heart of some international intrigue. Plus... we get the Winter Soldier, and Wolverine... which is always a bonus!

BATMAN WIDENING GYRE #3 CONTINUES FILM-MAKER KEVIN SMITH'S EPIC FINAL BATMAN STORY!

This isn't film-maker Kevin Smith's first crack at writing comics. The main man behind Clerks, Mallrats, and yes, even Jersey Girl (sorry, sorry..), has delivered some pretty stellar Green Arrow and Daredevil stories in the past. Along with the killer three issue Batman Cacophony storyline last year.
We have to say though, Widening Gyre, is probably one of the better stories we've seen from Smith. Now, granted, a big part of this is the fact that it's actually coming out on time. That makes a huge difference. But, seriously, it's really good.

First off, Walt Flanagan has improved A LOT as an artist since last year's Cacophony. While I really couldn't get behind the art in Cacophony, I'm really digging the dark, and twisted style Flanagan is using in Gyre. Secondly, Smith is delivering this one as a twelve issue maxiseries split up into two six issue chapters, which I think works better than the shorter story arcs he's done. Smith is the kind of writer who needs a few issues to set the tone, get you hooked, and then start dishing out the hooks and twists. Finally, the book is just plain awesome. I mean, it's out of continuity, so it's Bruce Wayne Batman, and it's the portrayal of him that you know and love (you can almost hear Kevin Conroy's voice when he talks), it's chockfull of Batman Rogues (and really, what good Batman story isn't?), and it has introduced a whole new twist to the Batman mythos, with the addition of a new vigilante (we're banking on him ending up being called Baphomet).

Smith has said in interviews that this is the last Batman story he'll ever write because he doesn't feel he'll be able to top it. We're thinking he's on the right track, as the first two issues have been great.

Interested in checking out BATMAN WIDENING GYRE? We still have copies of BATMAN: WIDENING GYRE 1 & 2 in stock at Third Eye, so you can catch up pretty easily. Check 'em out!

ASSAULT ON NEW OLYMPUS *ASSAULT ON NEW OLYMPUS CHAPTER 1* BEGINS MINI-EVENT SPINNING OUT OF CHARACTERS LIKE HERCULES & ARES!

Marvel has really done some interesting stuff over the last few years developing the pantheon of mythological gods and demigods in their universe. From the humorous, and clever stories told in the pages of INCREDIBLE HERCULES where we've seen everyone from Poseidon to Hades to the large involvement of ARES in the main event storylines.

So, here we are, and the Olympic pantheon are running Wall Street as the Olympic Group. Hera, besides spending her time making Hercules's life an absolute living hell, has created a product called Continuum that's so no-no bad bad that even Norman Osborn's terrified of it.

This event kicks off in the ASSAULT ON NEW OLYMPUS one-shot this Wednesday, and then will continue in the pages of INCREDIBLE HERCULES. For those of you who enjoy the highly underrated team of Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente, you should definitely check this one out.

CINDERELLA FROM FABLE TOWN WITH LOVE #1KICKS OFF BRAND NEW FABLES LIMITED SERIES, AND ALSO ACTS AS A GREAT ENTRY-POINT FOR NEW READERS!

The Vertigo series FABLES, is one of those comics that EVERYONE should read. It's so hard to explain it in a short synopsis, but basically.. picture every fairy tale and storybook character you can remember given real, fully fleshed out, and believable personalities. From the scumbag behavior of Prince Charming to the cynical trouble-shooting investigator that just happens to be the Big Bad Wolf... it's all so very cool.

This Wednesday, we're pretty stoked to see a brand new series spinning out of the FABLES world with CINDERELLA: FROM FABLETOWN WITH LOVE. Cinderella is one of the cooler characters in Fables lore, as her whole story shows how she'd evolved into this bad-ass secret agent girl through the course of her life. From deep sea-diving to breaking enemy's necks, Cinderella is one hell of an ass-kicker, and we know this series'll be packed with all the charm, and wit of FABLES with the hint of sex and violence that only a secret agent like Cinderella could carry.

Best of all, for those of you who haven't yet tried FABLES, Vertigo has made it sound to us like this is a nice entry point to try the series. Of course, we have to warn you.. after reading this.. you're going to be hooked and saying "Hey, Steve... can you show me where the first FABLES trade is?" But, hey, nothing wrong with that, right? :)

DEADPOOL TEAM-UP #899 PAIRS DEADPOOL UP WITH THE INCREDIBLE HERCULES! GET READY TO SEE THE MERC WITH A MOUTH PAIRED UP WITH A DIFFERENT CHARACTER EVERY MONTH!

You can never have too much DEADPOOL! But, in all seriousness, we know, there's been a lot of Deadpool lately. However, this new special team-up series is looking to be one of the better takes on the Merc With A Mouth. Why? Well, first off... Fred Van Lente is writing it. And, folks, this guy, Van Lente, can write funny. He's good. And, each issue, is a nice one-shot story, with a different creative team. So more or less, it's a BEST OF Deadpool kind of book. How awesome is that? In my opinion, the stories where ol 'Pool really shines are the one-shots. They fit the humorous nature of the character perfectly.

Anyways, starting things off, we've got a grand team-up between Deadpool and the likes of the Incredible Hercules. So, you know this one is sure to be crammed with lots of booze, and lots of violence. And, they're squaring off against two forgotten B-List baddies... the murderous ARCADE (wow, that's going way back), and the Lord of the Dream Dimension, NIGHTMARE.

So, who can resist? More Deadpool mayhem to make our days!

FINALLY, PSYLOCKE GETS HER OWN LIMITED SERIES, BEGINNING THIS WEDNESDAY INPSYLOCKE #1!

One of the X-Men Universe's most beloved characters is finally getting her own limited series starting this week. Written by X-Force writer Christopher Yost, a man who tends to write X-Books that don't suck, the character of Psylocke is finally getting fixed after a few years of wackiness and continuity screw-ups.
Anyways, this limited series which focuses on re-introducing Psylocke back into the X-Men books as a primary character, has Psylocke heading to Japan to place her former body in it's proper resting place.

Of course, things go wrong, and tons of violence and carnage ensues, with lots of dead ninjas in the mix. But, hey, that's not necessarily a bad thing!

DEATHLOK RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY IN A 21ST CENTURY SCIENCE FICTION HORROR STORY FROM CRIME NOIR WRITER CHARLIE HUSTON

Okay, I'll admit, I keep wanting to write Dethklok when I try this. See what too much Adult Swim can do to you? Anyways, the classic cyborg returns this week in the pages of Deathlok #1. And, while I wasn't too stoked about this upon first glance, I'm actually pretty excited now after reading the interview with writer Charlie Huston. A corporate cyborg killing machine powered by the body of a cocky superstar contract killer? It sounds too cool.

Basically, the vibe that I get from this is one of a killer old-school horror/sci fi series that plays up the horror of man and machine being melded into one. The artwork looks gritty as hell, and hey, what'd you expect from Lan Medina, the man who delivered some of the most harrowing issues of Punisher MAX.

Either way, this one looks like a very cool return of a classic, and often underused character. Stoked to check it out.

MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ #1 RETURNS LAST YEAR'S CULT HIT OZ SERIES, WITH MORE KILLER ART BY SKOTTIE YOUNG!

Last year, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz took EVERYONE by surprise. This unassuming little book slid right on by to become a smash hit, mostly based upon the fresh approach to the classic tale, and more importantly, Skottie Young's unique, stylized artwork.

And, now, this Wednesday, Marvel brings us back to the Land of Oz in the Marvelous Land of Oz series. The first round of these were tough to get a hold of, and all had very low print runs, so make sure you snag your copy this week. Trust us, if you like a twist on your classic stories, or are just a fan of amazing artwork, then you have got to check this out.

We're also running a promotion this week, that when you pick up Marvelous Land of Oz #1, you can get 20% off the Wonderful Wizard of Oz hardcover!

TRY SOMETHING NEW AT THIRD EYE - 7 NEW TITLES YOU NEED TO READ!
There's a lot of comics coming out these days. Sometimes it gets hard to keep track of all the good stuff, and some really great reads can slip through the cracks. That's why we've got a new feature in the shop highlighting seven new titles that we feel are really good and have a lot of promise. Some have already seen a great deal of success, and others are undiscovered gems, but either way, you gotta give these a read.

1. - From the writer of Walking Dead & Invincible, our love for Haunt was already expressed above, but seriously, if we're digging it this much after one issue.. then that has gotta tell you something.

2. Immortal Weapons - Pure Kung Fu awesomeoness. A rotating cast of all-star writers like Jason Aaron deliver the back stories to the Immortal Weapons, of Iron Fist lore. If you love Shaw Brothers Kung Fu, and 2D Capcom fighters, you need to read this!

3. Escape From Wonderland - Tongue-in-cheek twisted Wonderland tales featuring horrific, and trippy twists on the classic Alice in Wonderland mythos.

4. Batman Streets of Gotham - One of the most underrated new Batman titles, Batman the Animated Series co-creator Paul Dini is knocking it out of the park every month with this one. The dark side of Gotham City and it's underbelly are explored in this modern day successor to Gotham Central.

5. The Anchor - It's Hellboy meets Ultraman, as the Anchor, aka God's Leg Breaker fends off demons at the gates of Hell, and puts the beatdown on giant monsters galore. A fun, pulpy read.

6. Cowboy Ninja Viking - A fresh new Image series about a killer with the personalities of a Ninja, a Cowboy, and a Viking... and the hijinx that ensues as they stumble over each other's decisions.

7. Underground - Remember that creepy cave monster movie the Descent? Well, take that and mix it together with a well-written, gritty crime noir-kinda tale, and you've got Underground. Surprisingly good stuff.
