THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 9/1/10

Third Eye is Fueled This Week By:
Sounds: Dinosaur JR - Bug
Sights: Veronica Mars Season 3 - Not as good as the first two, but we're holding onto hope for things to pick up.
Tastes: That disgusting energy gum at the con. I still can't get rid of that taste.

WOLVERINE #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - WOLVERINE GOES TO HELL THIS WEDNESDAY IN THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE NEW ONGOING WOLVERINE SERIES by JASON AARON (writer of the Vertigo crime drama SCALPED) and rising star artist RENATO GUEDES! ALSO, DON'T MISS THE SPECIAL PROLOGUE ONE-SHOT, WOLVERINE: THE ROAD TO HELL
The biggest Wolverine story since OLD MAN LOGAN begins this week!
Wolverine hacking his way through the Marvel Universe while his soul is tormented in Hell by his old enemies!

This comic is going to kick so much ass, it's unbelievable. Guaranteed, this will be the raddest Wolverine story since OLD MAN LOGAN. Last week, you might remember us giving you one of those cool freebie Saga hand-outs that Marvel does. Well, that book there, provided pretty much everything you need to know about Wolverine, and what the heck he's been up to for the last few years. If you missed it, we do indeed have some left at the shop, and yes, they're totally free. Perfect way to prime yourself for this new series. Why is the new WOLVERINE a major must-read? We're gonna tell you right now..

1. The Creative Team - This new series is going to be AWESOME. Jason Aaron is the best possible choice for being the writer on Wolverine, and he's proven already that he can be a versatile, and talented writer on books like WOLVERINE: WEAPON X, SCALPED, PUNISHER MAX, and ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN/WOLVERINE. He knows what makes good Wolverine characterization, and his Wolverine reads like the iconic loner you remember idolizing as a 13 year old kid with your stack of comics, and Entombed CDs. Or maybe that was just me? Either way, he GETS IT. And, that's only one of the many reasons why I'm stoked about this new series. The addition of Renato Guedes as artist is a major bonus, and his Wolverine looks great. Very gritty, very visceral, he almost jumps off the page to you. You can see very line, and every hardship that 200+ years on this planet can cause etched into his face. In other words: he's the perfect artist for this book. Are you starting to see a pattern? This is a dream team of creators here, and they're the masterminds behind Marvel's relaunching of it's biggest icon of all-time.

2. The Plot and Direction of the Book - The direction for the title sounds very promising. Basically, this is a self-contained Wolverine title that stands as a perfect place for new and old fans to jump aboard ol' Wolvie. It's a fresh start to a new story, and the book itself is going to be a very well-done, self-contained kind of read that anyone can pick up and roll with. In other words, it's gonna capture that same kind of feel the original Wolverine series had where it really was just about Wolverine, and the totally screwed up people that came, went, and crossed his path throughout his journeys and adventures.

The first story arc itself sounds INCREDIBLY epic... Wolverine goes to hell. Literally. See, someone is out to destroy Wolverine... in every way possible. Body, mind, and soul. And, he's going to be sent straight to Hell, 'cause lets face it: Wolverine has done some nasty stuff in his time. Now the thing that makes this so cool is we're going to see A LOT of dead Marvel characters that've been rotting away in Hell, and while some of them probably deserved their fate, Aaron hints that not all of them have. It's pretty awesome to think that we'll get to see, of course, the obvious rematch between Wolverine and Sabretooth, who's all demon'd out now.

Plus, while Wolverine's soul is in hell, his body's not quite rotting in the ground. See, his demonically possessed body is gonna be hacking and slashing it's way through some of his old buddies, including a highlight mentioned by Aaron in an interview of a demonic Wolvie vs. Colossus fight that promises to be a cornucopia of metal vs. metal ultra-violence.

We're gonna see Wolverine getting put through the wringer like he's never been before, and he's going to be literally dragged through every corner of the Marvel U's hell. Knowing Aaron's style, we're going to see a VERY violent, blood-filled tale, with some solid writing, and some characterization.

How awesome does this sound?

3. It's the return of a Wolverine ongoing series - And, at the end of the day: it's the return of Wolverine to a monthly, ongoing title, and it's a Top Tier creative team title too! While I loved Weapon X, and thought Aaron did a great job, it never felt as tied to the Marvel Universe as the first issue of the new WOLVERINE ongoing did when I read the advance. This book feels much more in line with everything, and it's good to just see a killer Wolverine monthly back on the shelves.

All in all, this book is gonna kick-ass, and we highly recommend picking up the first issue this week if you just plain dig high quality high-action, and sometimes pretty violent superhero books.

This one-shot is a perfect pick-up point to get a taste of what's to come, and check out some all-new prelude stories that set up these kick-ass new titles.

MORNING GLORIES #1 BACK IN STOCK AT THIRD EYE THIS WEEK! THIS SURPRISE HIT FROM IMAGE COMICS TOOK US BY STORM LAST MONTH, AND WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT THE NEW PRINTINGS WE'RE GETTING IN STOCK THIS WEDNESDAY!

Dude, the first issue of this series was fantastic. I was bowled over by how much I enjoyed it, and it looks like I wasn't the only one. I believe we're either almost sold out of the initial shipment of these #1s, or we're down to our last copy, but, either way, we've got more copies of #1 coming back into stock this week for you to get your chance to check out what could end up being the next CHEW or WALKING DEAD for Image Comics.

So, what's it about? Well, Morning Glories is about the most prestigious prep school in the country: Morning Glory Academy. On the surface, the Morning Glory Academy appears to be a school that caters to only the most prestigious and powerful families in the country, but under the surface, there is a much darker, much more sinister reality. What's interesting is how the image and the reality manage to co-exist, as the school is able to graduate successful top students to Ivy League schools.

The first issue introduced us to six new students who have no clue what they're getting into, and this is where the read gets really good. Nick Spencer does a fantastic job of making each character stand out as realistic, and fleshed out. He really makes them believable, and much like books like Walking Dead and Chew, manages to really get you attached to the characters in the span of one issue. The characters are all different in their own way, like the brilliant sociopath that comes from a rich affluent family and is always looking to screw with people for his own amusement, or Hunter who's leaving home has an Almost Famous moment allusion involving Grant Morrison comics. The characters do share one thing in common: the same birthday. And, this is the first thing that tips them off that something is up.

There's a lot of mystery going on with this book, and we're really trying to be careful what we say here because we don't want to give away any of the good surprises or twists. But, dude, if you like stuff that's a little off the beaten path, try Morning Glories, the book is rad. Highly recommended.

INVINCIBLE VOLUME 13 GROWING PAINS TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY!

The only thing that's just as good as a new volume of WALKING DEAD arriving is when a new volume of INVINCIBLE hits. What's the common factor here? Can we say Robert Kirkman?

Yup, it's time, folks, another slab of Kirkman awesomeness hits this Wednesday, and damn, it feels like Volume 12 just came out, but I guess Summer just flew right on by. Either that, or Image is getting better about getting these bad boys out on time. :)

If you're not reading INVINCIBLE by now, then you have to check this series out. Especially if you're a fan of WALKING DEAD. Two totally different genres of comic, but both just as awesome as the other, due to the fact that they're both written by Robert Kirkman.

I love Invincible, in my opinion, I'd say is' the most realistic look at superheroes I've ever read. The relationships Kirkman builds between his characters, the way that he develops the plotlines and the characters within, it's awesome. Very very good stuff.

And, don't let the colorful cover art fool ya... Invincible is one of the bloodiest, most gut-wrenching superhero books on the stands. The fact that there's some really poignant, really strong character-driven storytelling driving that, makes it even more of a punch to the gut.

Pick up volume 1 sometime if you've never read the series, and you'll see why we can't say enough good about this one.

As for the rest of you, who, like myself, are hooked on this series, we'll see you Wednesday for Volume 12! If you want us to set one aside for ya, just drop me a line, because I do know that people are always itching for their next Kirkman fix!

SHADOWLAND #3 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*- Daredevil's gone crazy, killed Bullseye, and is now at war with most of the NY-based Marvel Superheroes.... this series kicks ass, one of the best things we're reading this summer!

Missed issues 1 & 2, we've still got copies of both in stock to get you caught up!

Shadowland has been nothing short of awesome so far, and we've been totally hooked with the first two issues. I just got done reading the advance of #3, and damn, folks... you're gonna love this one. A major turning point in the event, with probably one of the bigger shocks I've seen so far.

Now, for those of you who've already read issue #2, you know just why Ghost Rider's on the cover here, and I have to admit: it's one of the coolest uses of the characters I've seen in a while. Being summoned by The Kingpin? Insanity.

Anyways, we're going into issue #3 this week, and as always, I'm keeping it spoiler-free, 'cause I know you guys are gonna want to be surprised.

I will say this though, if you're not yet reading SHADOWLAND, you gotta check this one out. Daredevil has fallen into madness after taking over The Hand, built a giant prison/temple thing in the middle of Hell's Kitchen, and dubbed it Shadowland, and is pretty much trying to take over New York City and run it himself with his empire of evil Ninjas. All in the name of justice. Oh, and he totally broke both of Bullseye's arms, and stabbed him to death with a sai ala the Elektra death.

So, of course, none of this sits well with the NY-based Marvel heroes like Spider-man, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Moon Knight, and others. And, that leads us to one hell of a showdown between Daredevil's factions and them.

This series, like I said above, is complete and total awesome, with some fantastic writing by Andy Diggle (writer of THE LOSERS) and Billy Tan (artist from NEW AVENGERS last year). Great stuff, great story.

Click here to check out our SHADOWLAND checklist to find out more about SHADOWLAND and get caught up on this great storyline. We currently have all of the tie-ins in stock.

SHADOWLAND ELEKTRA ONE-SHOT ALSO DROPS THIS WEDNESDAY EXPLORING HER RETURN TO DAREDEVIL'S SIDE AND MORE!

Also shipping this week, we've got a killer one-shot that ties into Shadowland spotlighting Elektra, and her return to Daredevil's side. Knowing the past between these two, and judging from the quality of all the pretty awesome Shadowland tie-ins thus far, this one looks like it's gonna be a pretty kick-ass read.

SCARLET #2 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* - BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (writer of SIEGE, AVENGERS, POWERS, SPIDER-WOMAN, ect ect) and ALEX MALEEV (artist on DAREDEVIL & SPIDER-WOMAN) deliver their second issue of this killer new modern day political noir thriller!

The first issue of Scarlet was freakin' awesome, and we're amped to see the second one hitting the shop this week.

What is SCARLET? Well, from what we got from the first issue of Scarlet, it's definitely one of the best modern day crime-noir comics we've read in a while. And this isn't surprising, because it's the noir stuff that Bendis does best, and when paired with Maleev, he's practically untouchable. The book itself is very interesting in that it completely disregards the fourth wall, and has Scarlet literally talking to us, the readers, and not even in a humorous way, but in the way the protagonist of a good novel would. There's a certain connection that is fostered between the reader and Scarlet that helps pull you deeper into the story, and become more immersed with where it's heading.

Now, with that being said, the actual plot and concept of the book is pretty simple: a girl and a gun. But, it's Bendis and Maleev's crazy good writing and storytelling that really makes Scarlet stand out as a great read. Scarlet's a woman who has been through a whole life of bad turns, and twists, and she's reached her breaking point. There's a sense of politically charged motivation, but we can tell that she's completely fallen into a life of crime, and you know what they say about the road to hell? It's paved with good intentions. The book is a violent ,visceral read that does some very innovative stuff with comic book storytelling that we have not seen anywhere before.

Highly recommend picking up a copy, and checking out issue #1 if you haven't already. We do still have copies in stock to get you caught up to #2 this week. You won't be disappointed in this one! A very cinematic read that reminds you of a really kick-ass La Femme Nikita.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS #1 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* - "JONAH HEX" & "TIME BOMB" writers JIMMY PALMIOTTI & JUSTING RAY DEBUT THE ONGOING SERIES OF THIS DC CULT FAVORITE!
freedomfighters1
I'm a big fan of the recent incarnations DC has done with Uncle Sam, the Freedom Fighters, and all those Earth-X characters. There's just this great grindhouse movie meets superhero awesomeness feel to these stories.

And, now, the Freedom Fighters are getting their own ongoing series, and it looks great! Penned by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, the guys who brought you the previous Freedom Fighter limited series, this new series provides a fresh jumping on point for those of you who've never read the adventures of the freedom fighting team from the Earth where Nazi Germany won a prologned WW 2 due to a Japanese invasion of California, and advanced developments in nuclear weaponry.

Now, the current team, which came together a few years back, and is loosely based off of notes by Grant Morrison, presents an interesting dynamic. Uncle Sam is portrayed as an almost Christ-like figure, returning from the dead, with the new Firebrand filling a John the Baptist role. Plus, there's a character named Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard... how can you not love that?

What's up with this new ongoing series? Well, a national mystery unfolds when the government learns of the existence of a Confederate super weapon that was never used during the Civil War. This leads Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters through a hidden history of the United States that delivers some very shocking twists.

I can't wait to check this out, as Palmiotti and Gray have a really good thing going with this line-up of characters. If you're a fan of quirkier stuff like Atlas, Atomic Robo, and the like, you should definitely give this book a shot.

THOR: FOR ASGARD #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - THE ART IN THIS BOOK IS UNBELIEVABLE! CHECK OUT THIS AWESOME LIMITED SERIES SHOWCASING THE GOD OF THUNDER LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE!

Man, this one looks really, really nice. This new MARVEL KNIGHTS limited series focusing on an Asgard that's in the midst of armed revolt, a missing Odin, a dead Balder, and the entire realm battered by a years-long winter, gives us a look at Thor like we've never seen him before.

Did we mention that Mjolnir has mysterious denied Thor from wielding it? Yeah. Looks like Thor's got a lot on his plate here, and it's gonna be interesting to see how this goes down.

On the creative team side, this one looks great, with Rob Rodi handling the writing, and if you've read Submariner the Depths or Loki, then you'll recognize that name because he's the guy who made those series stand out so well. The real star of the show here though is Simone Bianchi, who is handling the pencils, inks and colors all in one, and they look GREAT. His art is a perfect fit for Thor and the world of Asgard.

The advance of this looks great, and Bianchi really does bring Asgard, and all of it's Gods and Monsters to life in a magnificent way. You want a bloody, brutal, and at the same time, regal and awe-inspiring Thor story? This is it.

If you read one Thor comic in 2010, it has to be THOR: FOR ASGARD. This is gonna rock.

X-MEN: CURSE OF THE MUTANTS SMOKE AND BLOOD #1 ONE-SHOT BRINGS MORE X-MEN VS. VAMPIRES AWESOMENESS THIS WEDNESDAY!

Curse of the Mutants has been one of the best damn X-Men storylines we've seen in a while, and it's been keeping us hooked week after week. So far, all of the tie-ins have been fantastic, and this week's latest looks very interesting, as we get to see the X-Men's Science Team begin their attempts to find a cure for vampirism. Of course, bringing a vampire into their lab for examination, may not have been the best idea.

Click here for a preview of X-MEN: CURSE OF THE MUTANTS SMOKE AND BLOOD #1

BALTIMORE: THE PLAGUE SHIPS #2 hits this Wednesday delivering another awesome monthly shot of old school vampire-killing awesomeness!

The new Mignola book, BALTIMORE: THE PLAGUE SHIPS is freakin' fantastic. And, we cannot wait to read issue #2 this Wednesday, as it looks like we're going to get a look at the terrible incident where Lord Baltimore's soldiers fell victim to creatures that feast upon the freshly dead.

This series provides a great, steampunky horror tale that is the perfect kinda story for Mignola to tell. The first issue drew us in, and Stenbeck's art that's packed with arcane objects, really brings you into the story.

If you missed issue #1, we've still got copies in stock to get you caught up to this week's issue #2

CHOKER #4 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING MORE AWESOME "BLADE RUNNER" MEETS "PULP FICTION" AWESOMENESS

Are you reading CHOKER? This incredible mash-up of crime noir, hardcore cyberpunk science fiction, and bloody splatterpunk horror is incredible. Ben Templesmith has given us the perfect replacement dose to tide us over until a new issue of Fell hits, and we're stoked about it.

A private detective gets brought back onto the police force he was disgraced from to figure out just what's up with this new designer drug that's turning those crazy kids into vampires, oh, and did we mention he's got a disease that's turning his hand into an alien lifeform? That's where things kick off, as we're thrown into the twisted, bleak, futuristic dystopia that is Choker.

If you haven't tried this one, we've got issues #1-3 in stock at the shop, and recommend giving the series a try.

TASKMASTER #1 - EVERYONE'S FAVORITE ANTI-HERO GETS HIS OWN LIMITED SERIES KICKING OFF THIS WEDNESDAY! And it looks pretty freakin' sick!

You know the one thing that really made AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE interesting near the end was the development of Taskmaster. He's always been a personal favorite, but to see them kinda take the whole supervillain for hire approach the direction they did, was pretty awesome.

See, Taskmaster is the guy that gets hired to train the henchmen and super-thugs for all the big-time criminal organizations; be it Hydra, AIM, the Sons of the Serpent, whoever... he's trained 'em. And, well, there's a rumor on the spread now that he's turned traitor and is working for Steve Rogers. What's this mean? It means a billion dollar bounty has been smacked on his head, and he's gotta fight hordes upon hordes of his psychopathic students while at the same time trying to figure out who framed him.

This one's gonna rock, why? 'Cause Taskmaster rocks.

DC KICKS OFF IT'S MONTH-LONG SERIES OF SPECIAL WAR COMIC ONE-SHOTS WITH OUR ARMY AT WAR #1 THIS WEDNESDAY!

ourarmyatwar1
You really can't deny it, war comics have a huge place in the history of comics. And, there have been some incredible war comics done throughout the years. Be it the classic stuff Joe Kubert did, or the more modern stuff that we've seen Garth Ennis do, it's a genre that seems to be a perfect fit for comics.

And, you know, being the suckers for good ol' fashioned war comics we are here at Third Eye, we're stoked to see DC's month long special of War comic one-shots bringing us brand new stories under the banners of their most classic war titles.

This week, we're gonna see Our Army At War, which gives us a different kind of Sgt. Rock story - one that follows the combat-happy Joes of Easy Company decades ago, and simultaneously, a modern unit in the mountains of Afghanistan, and shows interesting parallels between the two groups of soldiers.

Should be awesome, check it out this Wednesday at Third Eye!

HEROIC AGE: ONE MONTH TO LIVE #1 - What Would You Do With One Month to Change the World?

This one looks pretty freakin' cool. I'm still not totally clear on the whole plot and concept behind it, but from what I've seen and read so far, I dig it. Plus, Rick Remender is working on it, and well, Rick Remender's awesome.

The question? What would you do with one month to change the world? This is what Dennis Sykes is asking himself when he ends up becoming Marvel's unlikeliest. Banker by day, struggling parent by night - and miserable about it all. But, when a tragic turn of events gives Dennis a 30 day death sentence, he discovers his accident comes with super-powers. And, as the weeks in Dennis's life tick down, he sets out to leave a mark one way or the other -- even if he has to go through Spider-man, the FF, and the Avengers to do it.

Sounds pretty interesting, we'll have to see how this one turns out.

AVENGERS CHILDRENS CRUSADE #2 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - The original creative team behind YOUNG AVENGERS has returned and are kicking major ass with this 9-issue maxiseries!
The Search for the Scarlet Witch Continues!

It's so awesome to see Allan Heinberg and Jimmy Cheung working together again on the Young Avengers characters. Their original 12-issue run of Young Avengers was incredible, and I know I wasn't the only one who was completely blown away by what an awesome read that turned out to be. It's especially awesome to see Cheung back and doing some interior artwork, as he's an incredibly talented dude, and does some amazing stuff.

And, now with Children's Crusade, they're doing it all over again, and delivering a kick-ass comic in the process. The story is focusing on how the Young Avengers have discovered the secret of Wanda Maximoff's disappearance, and the Avengers attempts to neutralize the Scarlet Witch before the Young Avengers can find her. And, you know where this is all heading, right? An all-out war between the Avengers, the X-Men, and with the Young Avengers stuck in the middle.

Miss issue #1? Don't worry, 'cause we still have copies in stock to get you caught up.

TALES FROM WONDERLAND MAD HATTER vs. the QUEEN OF HEARTS ONE-SHOT ROUNDS OUT ZENESCOPE'S LATEST ROUND OF WONDERLAND ONE-SHOTS THIS WEDNESDAY!

We're totally suckers for Zenescope's tongue-in-cheek, uber-violent, and totally twisted approach to the classic story of Alice in Wonderland, and all it's mythos. They've really shaped and developed a unique world that springs from the original material in a very interesting way. If you're a fan of stuff like the classic American McGee's ALICE game, or Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, then you should really check out some of the Zenescope WONDERLAND stuff.

Right now, they're doing some stand-alone, one-shot stories that focus on different prominent characters in their Wonderland mythos, like the Mad Hatter, and the Red Queen. And, this Wednesday, we get a one-shot showing us the two going head to head, and trying to wipe the other out.

Awesome stuff, we've got the previous one-shots in stock as well, which are TALES FROM WONDERLAND WHITE KNIGHT, and TALES FROM WONDERLAND ROSE RED.

STAFF PICKS

Steve - NAMOR #1 - A true surprise hit. Never would I thought I'd be calling a Namor comic my pick of the week, but this one delivered some seriously creepy Lovecraft meets Robert E. Howard's Conan vibes. Really, really awesome stuff. Highly recommended.

Trish - SCIENCE DOG #1 = I loooove Robert Kirkman, and this one-shot was awesome. A dog turned super-genius with a jetpack? Yes!

Torma -GUARDING THE GLOBE #1= Great read, Kirkman gives us another dose of his take on the world of superheroes with this super-team springing out of the pages of Invincible. Really cool stuff.

Matt - BATMAN #702 = The best Grant Morrison Batman issue of the year, in my opinion. This one comic makes so much sense of EVERYTHING. Batman RIP, Final Crisis, the whole shebang. Pick up 701 and 702, and get your mind blown!
