THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 12/8/10

MEET THE NEXT HIT IMAGE SERIES: 27! 27 #1 DEBUTS THIS WEEK, AND IT KICKS ASS! TELLING THE TALE OF A YOUNG MUSICIAN WHO'S ON HIS WAY TO THE "27 CLUB" OF MUSICIANS (Joplin, Hendrix, Cobain.. all dead at the age of 27).. THIS NEW SERIES LOOKS SUPER RAD.
271
Image has been on a real streak in the last few years of putting out top notch, quality series, and this week, it looks like they're about to unleash their next big success story with the new series 27. Now, before I go any further, I gotta tell you: if you really want a first printing of this one, make sure you grab your copy this week. This series is hot as hell, and sold out over a month ago at the distribution level due to a low print run and high demand. While we've got plenty of copies coming in this Wednesday, I will say that once these are gone, we'll have to wait for second printings, which are already scheduled.

Okay, now, with that out of the way, we can talk about the stuff you guys actually care about: the book, and what it's about!

27 is a series which focuses on a young musician who just turned 27, by the name of Will Garland. The public doesn't know it, but he's been unable to play guitar for months now due to a neurological disorder affecting his left hand. And, there's also the international conspiracy theory of the "27 CLUB", which basically surrounds famous, and legendary musicians who all died at the age of 27. Ranging from Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix to Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, the 27 CLUB may claim another member in young Will Garland.

This series is a genre mash-up of the best kind, and that seems to be what Image Comics really does best these days. Mixing a few different elements together, and making it work. With a cast that runs the gamut of mad scientists, long dead rock legends, and cosmic entities, 27 looks like it's going to kick some major ass.

As for the art, and how it reads, well, from what we've seen of the preview pages, it looks pretty kick-ass. The pages we've seen read very well, with some nice, sharp dialogue, and a good pace, and the art is unique and kind of channels the same kind of stylized energy that CHEW does. The book is also in the same gorgeous over-sized Golden Age trim cut as VIKING, and that REALLY makes the art stand out.

If you're a fan of Image's other recent offerings like CHEW, COWBOY NINJA VIKING, SKULLKICKERS, MORNING GLORIES, and more... then you should definitely give 27 a peek this Wednesday.

Need us to hold you a copy? Shoot me an email, and we'll set one aside for you.

NEW AVENGERS #7 MAKES A BIG LINE-UP CHANGE, AND TAKES THE TEAM IN A NEW DIRECTION IN THE AFTERMATH OF LAST MONTH'S #6newavengers7

I gotta tell you, guys, NEW AVENGERS has really grown into one of my favorite monthly capes books. I really underestimated this title when Marvel announced their new line of AVENGERS titles, and I feel like New Avengers kinda got overshadowed in the midst of blockbusters like AVENGERS and SECRET AVENGERS. But, I gotta say, Bendis has really made NEW AVENGERS shine as the most character-driven and "real" of the bunch. The way the team interacts, the way the book reads, it all feels very organic, and natural, and maybe it's because Bendis has already had years of practice when working with a roster similar to this, or maybe it's just because these are the Marvel characters he really loves to write, but either way, it makes the book a kick-ass read every single month.

Now, finishing up the last arc that took place in NEW AVENGERS 1-6, the team is moving ahead into a new era, a new arc, and a new line-up. It looks like in the aftermath of the whole Agamatto wants his eye back, and he's gonna destroy a few dimensions to get it, the New Avengers have decided to tighten up the line-up, trim the fat, and see who's going to stick with the team, and who's going to be kicked to the curb.

You want a good, character-driven team book that delivers some bigger-than-life superhero action mixed with strong character interactions and the kick-ass art of Mr. Stuart Immonen? You need to be reading NEW AVENGERS, one of the most under-rated of the current Avengers titles.

We've got issues #1-6 in stock, and with #7 coming out this Wednesday, now's the perfect time to get caught up.

FLASH #7 *BRIGHTEST DAY* - Geoff Johns continues to kick ass and take names with his killer new FLASH ongoing series
flash7
Geoff Johns, by now, you know the name. He's the guy who pretty much has single-handedly breathed new life and energy into many of DC's icons. He's the guy responsible for GL Rebirth, Blackest Night, and now BRIGHTEST DAY. And, in case you didn't know, he's also the man responsible for making the Flash a must-read month in and month out. Of course, we can't overlook Francis Manapul's contributions to the book either. The art in this series is freakin' nice, and does a great job of conveying a constant feeling of movement and frenetic energy without coming off as confusing or sloppy.

The current Flash series focuses on the recently returned Barry Allen, and Johns has brought a really cool kind of super-hero CSI element to the series, playing up on Barry's day job as police forensics expert. And, like any good Flash story, Johns has started things off with a kick-ass tale regarding the Rogues, and.. The Rogues of the Future? Yup. The Renegades. Now, this week in issue #7, it looks like the Rogue spotlight is going to be on the recently resurrected Captain Boomerang, who as one of the many who were given a second chance through Brightest Day and the White Lantern, has a lot of intrigue surrounding him. The real question though, will he still be able to fit in and work with his former pals in The Rogues?

Missed issues 1-6 of this kick-ass series? We've got copies of each in stock to get you caught up!

CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES #6 - AVATAR PRESS'S FINAL WORD IN SURVIVAL HORROR CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY! THE MOST HORRIFIC COMIC SERIES YOU'LL READ. EVER. SERIOUSLY. WELL, EXCEPT MAYBE NEONOMICON. :)
crossedfamilyvalues6
Crossed. One word. And, if you're familiar with it, then you know the images it conjures. This is the most notorious, rawest, and most intense horror comic we've ever seen here at Third Eye, and David Lapham has been doing a fine job of continuing the legacy that Ennis started with his original run on CROSSED in the current arc of CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES.

But, don't get us wrong, CROSSED is more than just cheap shocks and thrills. There's a strong storyline that runs through these books, and shows us a compelling look at how human nature's dark side comes to surface when the world falls apart, and we're confronted by unspeakable horror.

See, in the world of CROSSED, a disease has broken out that infects normal human beings and turns them into pure engines of destruction and evil. It reduces modern man to his most base primal instincts and evil desires, but unlike the living dead, the Crossed still retain their ability to plot, plan and form strategies... which makes them more dangerous than any other kind of roaming killer mob seen in any horror fiction.

The things that the Crossed do to their victims are unspeakable, and really, it's better if we just leave it for you to see for yourselves. Trust us, folks, if you're a fan of stuff like THE BOYS, or THE WALKING DEAD, then CROSSED is a must-read.

Wanna get into CROSSED? You can either start with the first trade paperback that collects issues #0-9 (all 10 issues) in one nice slab, or you can jump in fresh with CROSSED: FAMILY VALUES, which will currently be up to #6 this Wednesday. We've got all the issues in stock of FAMILY VALUES to get you caught up.

Either way, read this series. Imagine WALKING DEAD taken to even darker, and more disturbing extremes, and CROSSED fits the bill nicely.

WIDOWMAKER #1 - WHO IS HUNTING MARVEL'S SUPER-SPIES? THIS NEW LIMITED SERIES IS A MUST FOR BLACK WIDOW & HAWKEYE AND MOCKINGBIRD FANS
widowmaker1
This one's a must for all of you who're digging both the BLACK WIDOW ongoing series, and the HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD series. See, someone is targeting various members of Marvel's super-spy community. Espionage agents around the world are being assassinated, their covers blown, and the security of their governments devastated... and, the person who's behind it all? A mysterious new individual rocking Hawkeye's former Ronin costume.

Who's next on the list? Black Widow and Mockingbird, and that's where the wild card comes into the picture with Hawkeye.

This one's being handled by the same creative team behind HAWKEYE & MOCKINGBIRD, so if you were a big fan of the series, and want to see more of those characters continue on, this is a perfect place to get your fix.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R AGENTS #2 - MORNING GLORIES writer NICK SPENCER delivers one of the freshest, most cutting edge super-team books we've seen since Ellis's AUTHORITY and Grant Morrison's DOOM PATROL. A MUST-READ!thunderagents2
Last month, DC Comics launched a brand new series that took the concepts of a slightly obscure, yet very classic '60s comic series, and completely turned them on their head. And, it didn't hurt that they put one of the best new writers we've seen on the book: MORNING GLORIES writer Nick Spencer. We LOVED the first issue, from the killer artwork to the edgy characterization, and concept, Nick Spencer and CAFU really knocked it out of the park.

THUNDER AGENTS, is a fresh start, and if you're like me, and have no or very little recollection of the original series of the '60s, then you should have no problem jumping into it. The concept of the book is really rad, focusing on a team that's chosen every year by the United Nations. The book reads like a very cool hybrid of espionage and super-team action, and the hook of it is fantastic, wanna hear it?

Super powers are given to these individuals, but with one catch: they're going to die one year after receiving them. In fact, as you see the story progress, you can watch how each time they use their powers, it's killing them little by little. For example, whenever the speedster accelerates, he's aging himself second by second. The book does a great job of redefining what we know as super-heroes, and super-villains, as the characters involved on the team all carry their own hang-ups, as well as motivations for making this sacrifice.

The series reminds us A LOT of other unconventional super-teams, like Warren Ellis's work on PLANETARY and the AUTHORITY, as well as Grant Morrison's DOOM PATROL and Mike Allred's run on X-Force.

We freakin' loved the first issue, and we highly recommend jumping on board with this one. Number 2 is due out this Wednesday, and we've made sure to have plenty of #1 in stock so those of you who missed it last month can jump on and get caught up.

IRREDEEMABLE VOL. 5 TRADE PAPERBACK CONTINUES MARK WAID'S KILLER "SUPERMAN GONE EVIL" SAGA THIS WEDNESDAY!
irredeemable5tpb
Irredeemable is one of the best freakin' comics we're reading right now. This series has really proven that there's much more to it than just the general concept of Superman Gone Bad. Waid has built a compelling, and fully realized superhero world where the characters act and behave like you'd actually picture them to, and we've been hooked on this one in a serious way.

Irredeemable is the story of The Plutonian, who is essentially, a Superman-like character, that after years of minor and major slights to him, has snapped and turned on the world as a whole. It's the little things that really make the series stand out, like for example, in the very first issue, the Plutonian begins his eradication of his former team-mates, by going for the Batman of the team first, and slaughtering him and his family, as he poses the largest threat.

The series practically crackles with pure comic book magic, and with recent developments in the storyline that we don't wanna spoil and reveal here, is just getting better, and better.

If you haven't read IRREDEEMABLE before, we highly recommend picking up TPB vol 1 this week for only $9.99, and giving it a go. We think you guys'll dig it A LOT. For those of you who are already on board, then you know you're just as stoked as I am to see where things are heading for the Plutonian and his world in this week's IRREDEEMABLE vol.5 tpb, which ships this Wednesday.

MATT FRACTION'S KILLER THOR RUN CONTINUES THIS WEEK WITH CHAPTER 4 IN THOR #618. THIS IS THE BEST THOR WE'VE READ SINCE J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI'S KICK-ASS RUN, AND WE RECOMMEND JUMPING ON WITH ISSUE #615 IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!
Plus, the RETURN of ODIN!
thor618
Thor has been the best it's been in a long time with this most recent run that started in issue #615 by MATT FRACTION (INVINCIBLE IRON MAN) and PASQUAL FERRY. Seriously, this is probably the most I've liked Thor since the early issues of the JMS run, and I just cannot get enough of the rad Jack Kirby and Walt Simonson-inspired sci-fi madness meets classic fantasy approach that Fraction has brought to the character.

The story so far shows us Asgard, now reduced to rubble, in the aftermath of Siege, but still floating above the United States. The story starts with a scientist meeting with Volstagg, and giving him this crazy chaos theory of how the very existence of Asgard in our solar system is attracting some really negative attention of the extra-terrestrial variety. See, with Asgard empty, a void of power has appeared, and these crazy nasty alien invaders sense this, and are heading through the Realms of Asgard to claim the fallen throne of the Asgardians. It's pretty badass, as in the first issue of the arc, we literally see blood raining from the sky, ice elves being cleaved to bits, and all hell breaking loose. As the series progresses, we get more of a sense of how all of these things have affected Thor, specifically the loss of his brother, Loki. And, last month, we saw Thor resurrecting Loki into the body of a young boy in Paris swindling folks in card games.

Now, going into issue #618 this week, things are getting serious as the World Eaters wreak more havoc, and Odin, yup, Ol One Eye himself, returns!

Missed #615-#617? We've got copies in stock to catch you up. Trust us, folks, you won't be disappointed in this one, it's kick ass.

JEFF LEMIRE'S NEW SUPERBOY ONGOING SERIES RULES, AND POISON IVY'S COMING TO SMALLVILLE THIS WEDNESDAY INSUPERBOY #2
superboy2

The new Superboy ongoing series from SWEET TOOTH writer Jeff Lemire is freakin' awesome. Lemire brings his knack for telling surreal, and interesting stories set against rural settings to Connor Kent's Smallville, and in doing so, gives us one of the freshest takes on the Superboy character that we've seen in a long time.

The first issue shows us Superboy reveling in how great it feels to be back home in Smallville, while Smallville itself is taking a change for the stranger. Lemire sets a lot of story in motion pretty quickly in the first issue, but manages to do so while keeping everything focused on Superboy. A great mix of big superhero action, well-handled teenage drama, and even some mystery. It's a sharp, witty and entertaining read.

As for the artwork, Pier Gallo is perfect, and compliments Lemire's writing style excellently. I really dug his take on Parasite, especially.

I gotta tell you guys, this one started off great, and we cannot wait to see what's to come in this week's issue which shows us the vegetation going out of control in Smallville, and of course, it all comes back to Poison Ivy.

Click here to read more about SUPERBOY #2, and if you missed #1, pick it up this Wednesday, and try one of the best new DC series we've seen kick off.

STEAMPUNK AWESOMENESS GALORE IN LADY MECHANIKA #1 THIS WEDNESDAY
ladymechanika1b
Man, the art in this series is incredible. And, the #0 preview really got us stoked for more of this kick-ass new series from Joe Benitez. Lets be honest though, we're a sucker for well-done stories set in the steampunk genre, and we really think that Lady Mechanika's got potential to be a fantastic series.

The story focuses on the title character, dubbed Lady Mechanika, by the tabloids, and the sole survivor of a psychotic serial killer's three year rampage through London. She was found locked in an abandoned laboratory amidst countless corpses and body parts, with her own limbs amputated and replaced with mechanical components, her life took a new direction. With no memory of her captivity, or her former life, Lady Mechanika has worked toward building a new life for herself as a private detective, using her unique abilities to solve the cases that the police cannot or will not handle.

This one looks great, and if you're a fan of set in the steampunk arena, or of occult mysteries along the lines of Mike Mignola's BPRD and HELLBOY stuff, we recommend checking this one out.

FABLES HITS ISSUE #100 THIS WEEK WITH A SPECIAL SQUAREBOUND GRAPHIC NOVEL FORMAT, AND LOADS OF EXTRAS, LIKE THE FABLES BOARD GAME!
fables100
This is a pretty big landmark, folks. It feels like just yesterday that Fables began, and I remember being blown away by it then, and to this day, it still impresses me with each new issue that hits. This series is killer, and with it's focus on a world where the fairy tale characters we all know and love act and behave like normal everyday people, mixed with a very epic urban fantasy approach, it remains one of my favorite books to this day.

I know a lot of you guys follow FABLES in trade paperback, but I would recommend picking up issue #100 this week. Not only is it a super-sized issue, but it's squarebound like a graphic novel, and is going to be loaded with extras that will NOT be collected in the trades, like the FABLES board game (how cool is that?), some special extra stories in addition to the main story, and more.

Check it out this Wednesday, and if you're not yet reading FABLES, do yourself a favor and pick up TPB v.1 and find out why this series kicks so much ass!

STAR WARS KNIGHT ERRANT AFLAME #3 - The best STAR WARS series we've read since STAR WARS LEGACY continues this Wednesday!
knighterrant3

We love us some Star Wars here at Third Eye, but I gotta admit, it's often a mixed bag what you're gonna get when it comes to the SW comics. And, this is why I'm so stoked about the new Knight Errant series, which is filling the void left behind by STAR WARS LEGACY quite nicely as the current ongoing SW series.

The story of Knight Errant focuses on a very new kind of lead character to the SW mythos. Normally, we either see the seasoned Jedi Knight, or the newbie Pawadan, but it's rare that we get to see a Jedi that's in transition between the two. With Knight Errant, the story is set 1,000 years before the Rule of Two is instituted, so there's Sith crawling the galaxy. No masters and apprentices here, just LOTS of Sith. And, Kerra Holt, a recently graduated Jedi Knight, heads out with some weekend warrior-esque Jedi Knights to clean up a Sith-infested corner of the galaxy. Of course, things go horribly wrong, and Kerra is trapped behind enemy lines, with hundreds of Sith on the hunt for her.

And from there, begins Knight Errant, one of the best damn Star Wars comices I've read in a while.

Missed issues #1 and #2? We've got both in stock to catch you up to this week's #3.

THOR: THE MIGHTY AVENGER TPB vol.1 GOD WHO FELL INTO EARTH - One of the freshest, and most enjoyable takes on Thor that we've seen in quite some time.
thormightyavengertpb1
One of the (many) things I love about doing what I do for a living is constantly being exposed to things that I wouldn't have normally been exposed to. I gotta tell you, I have been turned onto so many great movies, bands, and of course, comics, here at Third Eye, and while we're pretty much addicted and read everything, sometimes stuff'll pass us by every now and again. Thor the Mighty Avenger was one of those kinds of books. When it came out, it was really hard to tell what to make of it.. was it a kid's book? Was it just a really well-done and somewhat whimsical take on Thor? It's kind of both of those things.

Thor the Mighty Avenger is a great all ages book that kids and adults can both enjoy. It actually reads like a REALLY REALLY REALLY awesome Thor cartoon, and the creators who're on board with it, are delivering some of the raddest stuff we've seen. Roger Langridge, who's been nominated for Harveys and Eisners for his work on the Muppet Show comics, pairs with Chris Samnee, who's clean lines and artwork is phenomenal, deliver some of the best stand-alone Thor stuff we've read in some time.

This first trade due out this week collects issues #1-6 of the series, and if you just plain enjoy good, fun comics, we recommend picking it up. The world that Samnee creates with his art is incredible, he brings a real living texture to the characters and their surroundings, while keeping them expressive and vital at the same time. The relationship between Thor and Jane Foster is really heart-warming, and little scenes like Thor marveling at the wonders inside of Foster's fridge, and Foster's empathy for the God of Thunder are what really make the book pop.

I gotta say, the book is great, and don't just chalk it up as a kid's book, because this is a damn good read, and has the same kind of all ages appeal that series like BONE, and STUFF OF LEGEND do.

LET ME IN CROSSROADS #1 DELIVERS THE OFFICIAL PREQUEL TO THE CHILLING VAMPIRE STORY
letmeincrossroads1
I'll admit, I'm mostly excited for this one because I really freakin' loved LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, and the LET ME IN remake that came out this past fall. I feel that it's one of the best takes on the vampire genre I've seen in film, and I thought both the original and the re-make really delivered some chilling, well-done vampire yarns.

This week, a limited series kicks off explores the earlier days of Abby, and serves as a prelude to the LET ME IN film.

Click here for a preview of LET ME IN: CROSSROADS #1

HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS Trade Paperback Volume 3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING MORE KICK-ASS SLASHER-HUNTING AWESOMENESS.hackslashomnibus3
You cannot go wrong with the HACK/SLASH Omnibuses. Big, whopping slabs of HACK/SLASH goodness for one low price, these are the perfect way to get caught up on the cult favorite series.

This most recent omnibus collects issues #18-#34, as well as the ENTRY WOUND one-shot, and some other cool extras too.

Not familiar with HACK/SLASH? You gotta check it out. Snag a copy of OMNIBUS v.1 this week, and give it a go. The story focuses on Cassie Hack, the world's first Slasher-Hunter. And, what's a Slasher? Take every crazy undead wrath-driven '80s movie madman, and that gives you a good idea. From Freddy to Jason to Pinhead to Pennywise, and on and on, Cassie crosses paths with them all, or characters that bear a STRIKING resemblance to some of those above mentioned. Why does she do it? Well, her mom, the school lunch lady, started killing and cooking the kids at school that teased Cassie when she was a young and nerdy girl. Of course, the kids all team up, and burn her mother to death, and then she comes back as a Slasher. An undead so vengeful, so angry, that it cannot be stopped by conventional means. And, Cassie, finds herself having to put her dear ol' mom down for good. From there, her story begins.

For the rest of you who're already hooked on the series, we'll see you this week for your copy of vol.3

THIRD EYE STAFF PICKS

Steve - HEROES FOR HIRE #1 - Abnett and Lanning prove they got chops beyond the cosmic stuff, and deliver one of the most kick-ass new Marvel series I've seen this year. Really stoked for this one.

Trish - THE BOYS #49 - The Boys just gets better, and better, and I can't believe there's only 11 issues left... man, I'm going to be sad when this one ends.

TORMA - SHADOWLAND #5 - The series drug a little bit towards the middle, but man, the conclusion was great! I am so pumped for the Black Panther Man without Fear series now. I loved the way this one ended.
