THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 1/5/2011

BATMAN BEYOND #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - DC KICKS OFF THE NEW ONGOING BATMAN BEYOND SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY!
Justice League Beyond!
batmanbeyond01

This Wednesday, DC is kicking off the highly anticipated ongoing BATMAN BEYOND series, and folks, we couldn't be more stoked. This one follows hot on the heels of last summer's BATMAN BEYOND: HUSH BEYOND limited series which helped re-introduce Terry McGinnis to us after a bit of an absence. Now, DC is giving us a dedicated ongoing series which not only gives us a monthly dose of Terry McGinnis and his world, but also a monthly look at the rad, alternate DCU future that Bruce Timm and Paul Dini originally created with BATMAN BEYOND.

The first arc kicks off as a super-powered yet not-so-super-organized criminal has gotten himself in way over his head, and the entire Justice League of the Batman Beyond world has been brought down on him in pursuit. Of course, this brings the Justice League to Neo-Gotham, and that means that this has become more than just a simple case for Terry McGinnis.

The first limited series of BATMAN BEYOND whet our appetites for more, but this new ongoing series looks like it's going to deliver in an even bigger fashion. One of the things that I think always appealed to fans of BATMAN BEYOND was the way that new heroes and villains were mixed in with the pre-existing lore and history of the DCU. And, with an ongoing series, the writers of Batman Beyond are pretty much given an open field to build new characters, bring back older ones, and do whatever the hell they want in regards to Neo-Gotham, and this killer alternate future.

BATMAN BEYOND #1 hits this Wednesday, and even if you skipped the limited series, this one is a perfect spot to jump on fresh, and get into the character. We highly recommend checking it out.

THANOS IMPERATIVE: DEVASTATION ONE-SHOT SETS THE STAGE FOR THE COSMIC MARVEL UNIVERSE IN 2011
thanosimperativedev1

The Thanos Imperative may be over, but that doesn't mean everything is going to go back to normal for the cosmic Marvel characters. The DEVASTATION one-shot that hits this Wednesday serves as a solid epilogue to the THANOS IMPERATIVE by the cosmic maestros themselves, DAN ABNETT and ANDY LANNING, and also sets the stage for the cosmic Marvel Universe in the upcoming year. And, if you're like us, then you know that it's a very good thing that Abnett and Lanning have further plans for the special corner of the Marvel Universe they've carved out for themselves with the cosmic characters and storylines. These guys practically re-invented everything from forgotten characters like DRAX THE DESTROYER and the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY to background supporting cast like the Shi'ar Empire, and brought a very cool, almost Warhammer 40K-esque approach to the Marvel Universe's cosmic realms.

In DEVASTATION, we learn what happened to THANOS in the wake of the THANOS IMPERATIVE, as well as the fate of Lord Mar-Vell and the Cancerverse. We're also going to get to see who rules the Kree, and who rules the Shi'ar, and, the most exciting news.... what is all this talk of a COSMIC AVENGERS team about? Could we see the first formations of said team in this one-shot?

Click here for a preview of THANOS IMPERATIVE: DEVASTATION One-Shot

And, for those of you who've either just gotten into the Marvel Cosmic stuff via the THANOS IMPERATIVE, or are curious about getting into it, we'd recommend picking up the ANNIHILATION volume 1 trade paperback (in stock now here at Third Eye), as that's REALLY where everything began for the cosmic revival of the Marvel Universe.

JEFF LEMIRE CONTINUES HIS KILLER RUN ON SUPERBOY WITH THIS WEDNESDAY'S SUPERBOY #3
Missed issues #1 and #2 ? We've still got copies in stock to catch you up.
superboy3

We've been super-impressed by the first two issues of SWEET TOOTH writer, JEFF LEMIRE's SUPERBOY ongoing series. The combination of Lemire's killer writing and Pier Gallo's clean, smooth artwork makes for one of the best new DC books we've read, and folks, we really can't stress enough how much we're enjoying this one.

Lemire brings his knack for writing small-town rural areas that harbor weird secrets to the book, and makes Smallville more interesting than we've seen it in many years.

One of the things we've really enjoyed about the series so far has been how each issue brings Connor Kent head to head with some sort of iconic DCU character, whether it's classic Supes villains like The PARASITE or non-Supes villains like Poison Ivy, it's very interesting to see how the character interacts when thrown against these various characters.

The series really comes to life with a stirring combination of classic superhero storytelling and an offbeat, excitingly weird underbelly. It's the perfect blend of quirky and traditional, and Lemire really delivers big on this one. We can't wait to get our hands on #3 this Wednesday.

Missed issues #1 and #2? We've still got copies of both in stock of both to get you caught up.

27 #2 - THE NEW IMAGE BREAKOUT HIT SERIES CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY, AS THE MYSTERY OF THE "27" CLUB
272

Last month, the latest Image hit debuted with 27 #1. Following in the same trend as series like CHEW, and SKULLKICKERS, 27 not only blew us all away with the kick-ass story behind it, but also blew everyone away with how hot an item it became right out the gate with first printings of #1 going for upwards of $30 on eBay the week before the book even came out. However, the only thing that truly matters is how good the book reads, and folks, I gotta tell you, I really enjoyed the first issue of 27. The concept is clever, and the writing and art on this one was pretty solid.

What is 27? 27 is the story of a young guitarist who makes a Fustian bargain to get his playing ability back after a neurological disorder prevents him from picking a guitar up for the better part of a year. The book focuses heavily on the often-rumored existence of a "27 CLUB", that surrounds various musicians who've all died at the young age of 27, and in the series, we can expect to see legends like Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and many others, as they are all part of the mystical 27 CLUB. Of course, young Will Garland, the musician the series features, gains the attention of some spooky dead people that belong to the 27 CLUB, and are here to interfere with the Faustian bargain he's made involving mad scientists and crazy experiments to keep his ability to play the guitar.

We really dug the first issue, and we're excited to see where things go in the second issue this week, as the first issue was still mostly an introduction and set-up for this world.

If you missed issue #1, we've still got a very limited amount left to get you caught up, and we'll have second printings of #1 in very soon as well.

Don't sleep on this series, as the second issue has also already gone out of print, and been severely allocated, so it looks like this one will be just as scarce as the first.

JASON AARON (writer of SCALPED and WOLVERINE) kicks off the most kick-ass ULTIMATE series since Hickman's ULTIMATE THOR began with ULTIMATE COMICS CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 this Wednesday
ultimatecaptainamerica1
This book looks bad-ass, folks, plain and simple! Jason Aaron is one of our favorite current writers working today, and his work on his creator-owned VERTIGO series SCALPED, as well as his work on the new WOLVERINE ongoing series (the Wolverine Goes to Hell story arc), has made him a big-time Third Eye Favorite. Not to mention the fantastic job he's done on stuff like Punishermax recently.

And, now, Aaron is bringing us probably the raddest Ultimate title since Hickman kicked off his ULTIMATE THOR title a few months ago. The way that Cap is written in this one is very much in line with how Millar wrote Cap in his original two runs of THE ULTIMATES, and in our opinion, that's a very good thing.

The story ? Captain America meets his ultimate nemesis -- the Captain America of the Vietnam War. See, when Cap was frozen in an icecube after WW 2, the U.S decided that a new Super-Soldier was needed, and hence, the Vietnam War-era Captain America. Yes, this one is a big-time send-up to the whole concept in the regular Marvel Universe of the "1950s Cap", and we're pretty stoked to see it brought to life by Aaron and Garney, the creative team that kicked muchos ass on WOLVERINE: WEAPON X.

STEEL #1 *REIGN OF DOOMSDAY CHAPTER 1* ONE-SHOT BEGINS THE RETURN OF DOOMSDAY THIS WEDNESDAY
steeloneshot1
reignofdoomsdaysupes

Earlier this year, DC released a teaser image with the dripping Superman logo that we all know and relate to the DEATH OF SUPERMAN storyline from way back in the day. Now, starting this Wednesday, DC is kicking off the return of one of the most infamous Superman villains in DCU history: DOOMSDAY. We're pretty stoked about this, 'cause c'mon, who didn't grow up reading comics in the '90s and doesn't remember seeing Doomsday wrecking the DCU in a major way? It's pretty cool to see that character coming back, and the storyline that's being put in place to bring him back into the forefront of the DCU, is pretty awesome sounding.

The STEEL one-shot this Wednesday is the first chapter of the REIGN OF DOOMSDAY story arc, and puts John Henry Irons back into the spotlight of the DCU. It takes a one heck of a superhero to be considered as one of Superman's closest peers and colleagues, and now, we watch as such a man, STEEL, stands as the only thing between the old school Superman villain METALLO and the destruction of Metropolis. Oh, and we hear this is where Doomsday first makes his presence known upon his return. :)

DC newcomer, and DR. WHO novelist Steve Lyons pairs up with the very talented artist Sean Chen to kick off the REIGN OF DOOMSDAY in STEEL #1 this Wednesday.

Click here to check out the tentative official checklist for REIGN OF DOOMSDAY that we've put together.

AVATAR PRESS BRINGS BACK THE CLASSICS WITH LADY DEATH #1 THIS WEDNESDAYladydeath1boundless

The publishers of amazing series like NEONOMICON, CAPTAIN SWING, and CROSSED have brought back one of our teenage guilty pleasures with LADY DEATH, and after a killer start in last month's LADY DEATH #0, the series officially begins this Wednesday in LADY DEATH #1.

In this new ongoing monthly series, the '90s femme fatale that adorned the walls of many comic-reading youth a decade and a half ago (myself included) returns. Lady Death is on a quest to recover the fragments of her mysterious past, and gets wrapped into some madness by the 'Death Queen', and some sort of werewolf assassin.

We know, the story ain't exactly high art, but it's bloody, it's fun, it's tongue-in-cheek, and it's loaded with cool monsters. What more could you want from a Lady Death comic?

DC SPOTLIGHTS THE STRANGER CORNERS OF THEIR UNIVERSE WITH THE NEW WEIRD WORLDS LIMITED SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY IN WEIRD WORLDS #1
weirdworlds1
DC is spotlighting some of their stranger characters with a new limited series that kicks off this Wednesday by the title of WEIRD WORLDS. This new anthology series that features some talented names like Kevin Maguire, and Jerry Ordway, looks to be bringing us 6 issues of ghoul-filled, monster-loaded, cosmic craziness.

The star, of course, being everyone's favorite Czarnian, Lobo, as Jerry Ordway brings to life the adventures of everyone's favorite foul-mouthed intergalactic bounty hunter.

And, then, here's one that's... interesting... the all-new, all-great.. GARBAGEMAN! Yes, it's a character made of garbage. And, yes, for some reason, I'm very intrigued by this.

And, then finally, the very talented Kevin Maguire takes us to the farthest reaches of outer space with a new cosmic character by the name of Tanga.

I'm not sure what to expect from this one, but I gotta say, I like Lobo, and I'm intrigued by the very '70s feel of the series. It sounds like a lot of fun.

AVENGERS: CHILDRENS CRUSADE #4 - The original YOUNG AVENGERS creative team is kicking ass on this official sequel to the HOUSE OF M.avengerschildrenscrusade4

AVENGERS: CHILDRENS CRUSADE has really turned into one of my favorite Marvel books. It's a tight, self-contained bigger-than-life story that spans the Marvel Universe, and does make a major impact on the in-continuity Marvel Universe. In other words, it's the best of both worlds. You get the sense of gravity and weight that a major event like this brings, and the lasting effects that it could have on the Marvel Universe, but at the same time, you get a very tight, self-contained story that only takes place in the pages of one book. It's a very good read, and the creative team of the original YOUNG AVENGERS series (Heinberg and Cheung) are really knocking it out of the park.

For those of you who haven't read the original 12 issue YOUNG AVENGERS series, I highly, highly recommend going back and snagging the trade that collects the full series. It's REALLY good stuff, and don't let the title fool you, it's not just a junior version of the Avengers.

As for CHILDRENS CRUSADE, this story acts more as a follow-up to HOUSE OF M, than it does a sequel to YOUNG AVENGERS though. The storyline focuses on the Young Avengers (Speed, Wiccan, Hulkling, Patriot, Hakweye, and the rest of the gang) and their search for Speed and Wiccan's mother, THE SCARLET WITCH, after her disappearance during AVENGERS DISASSEMBLED and HOUSE OF M.

The story spans the entire Marvel Universe, bringing in characters ranging from MAGNETO to DR. DOOM, and then some. In this week's #4, we're seeing the Young Avengers paired with Magneto and Quicksilver as they attempt to rescue the SCARLET WITCH from the clutches of Dr. Doom. Of course, there's something standing in their way:

Wonder Man and the Avengers.... say what? Yes, this is going to get very, very interesting.

Missed 1-3? We've got copies in stock and available to get you caught up to this week's #4.

WALKING DEAD #80 - THE SECOND ISSUE FOLLOWING THE 13th TRADE PAPERBACK. WANNA HOP ONTO THE MONTHLY?
Snag issues #79 and #80 this week at Third Eye!
walkingdead80

You know, the less we say about what goes down in the pages of WALKING DEAD, the better, 'cause lets face it, this is the ONE book that must be absolutey 100% spoiler-free, 'cause dude, Kirkman writes some MEAN twists.

So, instead of us talking about what's already come to pass, we'll just say this: WALKING DEAD #80 hits this Wednesday, and we know you guys couldn't be more pumped about this one. This is also the second issue following the 13th trade paperback, so if you're looking to hop onto the monthly series, you're only two issues behind on it with this one. And, we most definitely do have #79 still in stock to get you caught up from trade vol.13 to this week's #80.

But, lets face it, folks, a new issue of WALKING DEAD? 'nuff said!

HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY! THE OFFICIAL YEAR ONE STORY OF CASSIE HACK, AND IT'S ONLY $9.99
hsmyfirstmaniactpb

If you haven't yet discovered the wonderful world of Cassie Hack, then now's your chance with the upcoming MY FIRST MANIAC trade paperback from IMAGE COMICS. This is the perfect "YEAR ONE"-style origin story of everyone's favorite Slasher-Hunter, and as the first series of the book that's come out on IMAGE, this one was just plain awesome.

The story of HACK/SLASH is the perfect comic for anyone who's a big fan of B-Grade Horror Movies, and especially slasher flicks, as it pays loving tribute to all of these things. Basically, HACK/SLASH follows Cassie Hack, a young girl who's mother was known as the LUNCH LADY. See, her mom decided to kill all the kids that picked on Cassie in school, and well, cook 'em up, and of course, the kids turn on her, and burn her alive in her own stew, and she comes back as a wrath-filled, vengeful undead who just wants to kill, kill, kill... in other words, a slasher. Yup, remember Michael Myers? Jason Vorhees? Freddy Krueger? Or lesser known Slashers like The Candy Man, the Sleepaway Camp girl, or even the likes of semi-slashers like Pinhead? Well, that's what Cassie has dedicated her life's work to destroying after having to take out her own mom. And MY FIRST MANIAC is the full, official YEAR ONE origin story of everyone's favorite SLASHER killer.

We loved the series, and think it's a lot of fun, with some sharp, clever writing and some fantastic art. And, for $10, it's a perfect opportunity to try the world of HACK/SLASH with this first trade.

THIRD EYE STAFF PICKS

Steve - BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #1 - The biggest Batman book since Jim Lee first debuted HUSH. The art in this is amazing, the story is old-fashioned straight-forward, Batman breaking faces, and this is going to be THE must-read book of 2011, I'm telling you now.

Trish - INCOGNITO BAD INFLUENCES #2 - Ed Brubaker, you are a genius. The new INCOGNITO series is every bit as good as the original, if not better.

TORMA - AVENGERS #8 - The INFINITY GAUNTLET. RED HULK. THE ILLUMINATI. How can this not be good? This one was action-packed in a major way, and it's pretty exciting to see Bendis reintroducing the Infinity Gauntlet to the Marvel Universe.
