THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 8/3/11

FLASHPOINT #4 - THE PENULTIMATE CHAPTER OF FLASHPOINT ARRIVES AS THE END NEARS!

flashpoint4FLASHPOINT has without a doubt been the biggest book to take over the racks of Third Eye this summer. Geoff Johns, the writer of hits like BLACKEST NIGHT, BRIGHTEST DAY and GREEN LANTERN SECRET ORIGIN, has really delivered something special with Flashpoint.

And, now, knowing that FLASHPOINT is the official lead in to the DC NEW 52 Relaunch, we could not be more pumped.

For those of you who've yet to dive into FLASHPOINT, you're probably wondering what this series is all about? Well, allow us to give you the scoop.

FLASHPOINT is a major DC UNIVERSE storyline that spans the entire DCU. It's very similar to story lines like HOUSE OF M, where a key event happens in the past and completely alters the timeline and reality of the universe as a whole.

While the mystery of WHAT happened to cause FLASHPOINT is still unravelling, we've been shown many fascinating aspects and components that make up the world of FLASHPOINT.

For example, and we feel that it's been long enough now since issue #1 came out that we can drop talk about this, but one of the coolest aspects of FLASHPOINT is the twist on BATMAN. In the world of FLASHPOINT, Bruce Wayne was the one murdered, and his father.. Thomas Wayne.. he IS Batman. And, don't even get us started on the twist on the JOKER.

Other interesting plays on established characters include AQUAMAN as a power-crazed dictator who's at war with Wonder Woman and her Amazons, as they ravage the face of the Earth to vanquish one another. Or, how's about PLASTIC MAN being a deranged psychopath who disembowels people from the inside out?

Yeah, FLASHPOINT is rad.

And, Barry Allen, the FLASH, is the one man who KNOWS something is up, and he's determined to solve it.

The other big deal about FLASHPOINT is how it's priming us for the upcoming DC Relaunch. See, whatever happens at the very end of FLASHPOINT #5, is what will usher in the NEW 52, and that, my friend, makes FLASHPOINT mandatory reading.

Plus, it's Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, how can it not rock? :)

FLASHPOINT WAVE 3 BEGINS with FLASHPOINT BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE #3, FLASHPOINT DEATHSTROKE #3, FLASHPOINT SECRET SEVEN #3, and FLASHPOINT WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #3.

flashpointbatman3

This cover is the best thing ever. Seriously. I'm loving all the FLASHPOINT tie-ins, but, man, the BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE one is definitely my favorite.

I mean, obviously, Batman is one of the most interesting and fascinating aspects of the FLASHPOINT world, and anything that explores deeper into his origins and motivations is going to be awesome. But, man, are Azzarello and Risso nailing it on this one. The same writer who brought you JOKER, and the same creative team as the now-classic 100 BULLETS, this series stands out as one of the FLASHPOINT major highlights.

Anyways, moving right on ahead, this is the third and final issue of the FLASHPOINT BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE, and we cannot wait to see how this one finishes out after the totally shocking reveal of issue #2.

Missed the earlier issues? We've got 1 & 2 in stock to catch you up, and hey, didn't get FLASHPOINT Batman pin yet? We've still got ones available to pass out with copies of FLASHPOINT BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE #1.

flashpointdeathstroke3

Next up, is the FLASHPOINT DEATHSTROKE #3, which has been another favorite of our's here at Third Eye. I mean, heck, we just plain like DEATHSTROKE, and that's reason enough, but, man, this one has been pretty freakin' cool. It's Deathstroke, and he's a pirate, and Clayface is a major part of his crew... I mean, c'mon, what's not to love? Another great tie in to the FLASHPOINT canon.

Missed issues 1 & 2 ? We've got copies of each, and buttons to go with #1 as well, to hook you up.

Click here to add FLASHPOINT DEATHSTROKE CURSE OF THE RAVAGER to your subscription box.

flashpointsecretseven3

Spotlighting many of DC's magic-based characters in the realm of FLASHPOINT, Peter Milligan has been going all out with his work on FLASHPOINT SECRET SEVEN, and it's getting us pretty freakin' stoked for the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK.

If you're looking forward to JL Dark, then we definitely recommend picking up this one, and giving it a go.

Missed issues 1 & 2? We've got copies of both, along with buttons to go with #1, in stock.

Click here to add FLASHPOINT SECRET SEVEN to your subscription box.

worldofflashpoint3

And, then rounding out our FLASHPOINT tie-ins this week, we've got FLASHPOINT: WORLD OF FLASHPOINT #3. This series has done a terrific job of filling in the gaps between the issues of the MAIN FLASHPOINT series, and we've been really digging it.

Missed issues 1 & 2? We've got copies, and buttons, in stock to catch you up.

ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 UNVEILS THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE BRAND NEW SPIDER-MAN.

DO NOT MISS THIS HISTORIC ISSUE!

ultimatefallout4

The fourth issue of the universe-building ULTIMATE FALLOUT arrives this week, and we could not be more pumped to see the big reveal of just who the new Ultimate Spider-Man is.

For the last few months, we've been following a very important storyline in the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE: the DEATH OF ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN. This was not only the end of an era for an entire generation of comic fans (myself included) who grew up reading a new Peter Parker's adventures in a new universe where the Avengers were more akin to a military unit, and comic book rules like the dead don't stay dead did not exist.

And, sure enough, they really killed ol' Spidey.. and, being the Ultimate Universe, you can bet, dead is dead.

However, we've known since before the death that someone new would step up, and take on the mantle of the wall crawler. And, issue #4 of ULTIMATE FALLOUT is where it happens.

ULTIMATE FALLOUT has been a limited issue series that's followed up on the DEATH OF ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, and with the new ULTIMATE UNIVERSE architects NICK SPENCER (MORNING GLORIES), JONATHAN HICKMAN (FF), and BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS helming this one, we've literally been watching as a brand new Ultimate Universe is built here.

And, now, we get to see what could be the biggest new character debut in ages, as the new Ultimate Spiderman makes his first appearance!

We got to sit in on a conference call about ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4, as well as some details on the new ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN, and some very exciting and interesting tidbits about Spencer and Hickman's upcoming ULTIMATES and ULTIMATE X-MEN series. All we can say: if you've ever been interested in jumping into the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, now is the time.

Folks, if you've missed the earlier installments of this one, we urge you to snag copies of 1-3 this week, 'cause while as of this writing the media blitz has not begun... we can tell you now: this one is going to be BIG.

We've got copies of 1-3 in stock to get you caught up, as well as all chapters of the DEATH OF ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN story arc.

THE INFINITE #1 from ROBERT KIRKMAN (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE, & HAUNT) & ROB LIEFELD (IMAGE COMICS Co-Founder, the creator of DEADPOOL, and artist of legendary runs of X-FORCE)

theinfinite1

Definitely one of my most anticipated books of the summer, and one of the most promising new series to come out of IMAGE COMICS this year.

In a nutshell, it's two of comics biggest superstars combining forces to dish out one gigantic, over-the-top, bigger-than-life superhero romp, and folks, we could not be more pumped about it.

Before I go any further, I gotta tell you why we're stoked:

#1 it's Robert Kirkman, and there's no one who knows how to do over-the-top better than Mr. Kirkman. His incredible series like WALKING DEAD, and INVINCIBLE have proven that no matter what the genre, he's very capable of creating compelling, complex characters that draw you into the world you're following, and then leave you devastated when they're taken out of that world.

#2 it's Rob Liefeld, and, as a child of the late '80s and early '90s, I gotta tell you, when you put Mr. Liefeld on the right title, he delivers the goods, and THE INFINITE is the kind of big, bloody and awesome superhero team book that fits like a glove for Liefeld.

#3 it's a new IMAGE superhero title, and those are few and far between. Don't get me wrong, many of my favorite series are Image's quirkier and off-beat stuff like CHEW, and WALKING DEAD, but I've got a soft spot for the little superhero universe Kirkman has really added depth to through his series like INVINCIBLE, and IMAGE UNITED.

Now, what's it about? Freedom fighter Bowen has lost everything in the war against THE INFINITE. His only hope is to travel back in time to prevent their world domination before it starts. But, Bowen can't do this alone, and he's gotta bring in the only person he can trust: himself.

Now, a man in his 40s, damaged by the horrors of war, must team up with his younger, reckless, and more optimistic 20-year old self in order to save the world from the horrors of THE INFINITE.

A big, bold super-powered action story brimming with Kirkman's snappy storytelling, a whole lotta blood, and Liefeld's hyper-kinetic artwork, THE INFINITE looks awesome.

DARTH VADER RETURNS IN A BRAND NEW SERIES WITH STAR WARS: DARK TIMES #1

swdarktimesoutofwilderness There are some things in life that are just plain and simple scientific fact, and one of those things is that if you tell ANY story that stars DARTH VADER and is set in or around the original SW Trilogy.. it's going to be awesome.

We saw it last year with the DARTH VADER AND THE LOST COMMAND series, and we're going to see it again this year with the brand new STAR WARS DARK TIMES OUT OF THE WILDERNESS series which stars DARTH VADER in a brand new Trilogy-era series.

Set in the Dark Times of the Star Wars Universe, a period of time where the EMPIRE was new to the galaxy, and the Jedi were being hunted down one by one by DARTH VADER. An era where the DEATH STAR was only a plan coming into realization. An era where Obi-Wan wandered the Junderland Wastes, after taking Luke and Leia to safekeeping.

This is awesome stuff, folks, as it goes down immediately after REVENGE OF THE SITH, and before A NEW HOPE, showing a very under-exposed part of SW history.. and of course, focusing on the coolest SW character of all time: DARTH VADER.

Snag yourself a copy this Wednesday, and hop aboard!

THE PUNISHER RETURNS TO THE MARVEL UNIVERSE THIS WEDNESDAY IN A BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES FROM HARDBOILED CRIME WRITER GREG RUCKA (BATWOMAN, STUMPTOWN) and rising star artist MARCO CHECCHETTO.

AN AWESOME READ, and a TRUE return to the early PUNISHER stories.

Check out PUNISHER #1 this Wednesday

punisher1

We love THE PUNISHER here at Third Eye, and for a character that's seen so many highs and lows, we still can't help but get excited when a brand new PUNISHER series kicks off.

While it's going to be hard for anyone to touch the awesomeness that was Garth Ennis's PUNISHER run, we gotta say, we haven't been this stoked about the character in a long-time. We loved what Rick Remender did with his IN THE BLOOD limited series (available now in trade paperback here at Third Eye), but we feel that Rucka is one of the best choices in the world to helm a PUNISHER ongoing series.

Rucka, who's known for his gritty, hardboiled and crime-drama driven takes on storytelling is looking to take Frank Castle back to his roots. A simple man who lives to kill. And, he's doing it by keeping Castle grounded in the underworlds of the Marvel Universe.

In PUNISHER #1, Frank Castle is locked and loaded for the most violent mission of his life as he takes aim at a new form of organized crime that's growing in New York City.

Great artwork from newcomer Checchetto, and a very solid story by Rucka, this is a great addition to the trio of street-level books Marvel has reinvigorated with MOON KNIGHT, DAREDEVIL and now THE PUNISHER.

If you're a fan of PUNISHER MAX, or a fan of the original old school PUNISHER WAR ZONE / PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL days, then this one is a must-read.

BATMAN ARKHAM CITY #4 CONTINUES THE MINI-SERIES THAT SERVES AS THE OFFICIAL PREQUEL TO THE UPCOMING ARKHAM CITY VIDEO GAME.

arkhamcity4

We're major fans of the ARKHAM ASYLUM video game here at Third Eye, and you know, we've been increasingly impressed with how good of a job video game tie-in comics have been in the last few years. Series like MASS EFFECT, and WORLD OF WARCRAFT have proven that you can either take existing game characters and supplement the game by further exploring their story, or just tell stories that continue to evolve and exist in the world of the game.

And, this kick-ass mini-series from BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES co-creator PAUL DINI, is a perfect example of how good video game-related comics can be.

In BATMAN ARKHAM CITY, Dini explores what happened immediately following BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM, and led up to the upcoming ARKHAM CITY video game.

It's a great series that fills the gaps between the two, and even on it's own, as a kick-ass out-of-comic-continuity Batman tale, it's very good.

Missed 1-3? We've got copies in stock to catch you up.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE & DETECTIVE COMICS writer SCOTT SNYDER debuts his brand new IMAGE horror series SEVERED this Wednesday with SEVERED #1.

severed1

Man, we are mega SCOTT SNYDER fans here at Third Eye, folks, but you already know that. You know how much we love his work on the Vertigo series AMERICAN VAMPIRE, and how much we've been digging his recent work on DETECTIVE COMICS and GATES OF GOTHAM.

And, as one of the biggest writers set to explode when the DC RELAUNCH begins (he's writing two of what look to be top tier books with SWAMP THING and BATMAN), it looks like we'll be seeing no shortage of awesome SCOTT SNYDER stories passed our way.

This Wednesday, in SEVERED #1, Snyder kicks off a brand new series courtesy of IMAGE COMICS. The story starts in 1916, where a man haunts the roads, a man with sharp teeth and a hunger for flesh. When 12-year old Jack Garron runs away from home, he'll see how quickly the American Dream becomes a nightmare.

Details on the series are cryptic, but all we can say is this looks to be the most terrifying series Snyder has done yet. A pure, straight-up horror thriller that brings Snyder's knack for strong character development, and fascinating plots to the forefront.

FROM THE MARVEL CROSSGEN IMPRINT THAT BROUGHT YOU SIGIL & RUSE... "AIR" writer G.WILLOW WILSON BRINGS A NEW URBAN FANTASY EPIC WITH MYSTIC #1 THIS WEDNESDAY

mystic1
Marvel's CROSSGEN imprint has been doing a great job of delivering a diverse assortment of genres to us this year, and the latest and greatest looks to be MYSTIC, which hits this Wednesday.

Featuring the writer of critically-acclaimed Vertigo fare like AIR and CAIRO, and the art of up-and-comer David Lopez.

The story of Mystic focuses on the fate of a world powered by the mystic arts and technology that rests in the hands of two seemingly ordinary orphan girls. The impoverished slums of Hyperion are no place for two young girls to grow up, but when the two dare to delve into the Noble Arts, their world is turned upside down.

And now, with new powers granted by the magical tech once forbidden to them, one girl must take up the massive burden of saving the world, and the other will dedicate herself to destroying it.

This one looks rad!

RED SKULL INCARNATE #2 - GREG PAK (writer of MAGNETO TESTAMENT) continues to tell the dark origins of THE RED SKULL in this grim limited series.

redskull2

We were totally blown away a few years ago by Greg Pak's phenomenal MAGNETO: TESTAMENT limited series, which showed us a full and compelling origin story by Pak, that portrayed Magneto in a different light.

So, when we saw that he was returning with this kick-ass RED SKULL: INCARNATE series, that does a very similar thing, we got pretty stoked.

And, after reading the first issue, we gotta say, Pak is doing it again. He's taken one of the Marvel U's most vile, and despicable super-villains, and began to unfold a compelling, and well-crafted look into the early days that shaped this individual into who he is.

Missed issue #1? We've got copies in stock to catch you up.

TERRY MOORE, the creator of ECHO and STRANGERS IN PARADISE, returns with a brand new series, RACHEL RISING, this Wednesday.

rachelrising1

Huge, huge, huge Terry Moore fans here at Third Eye. Whether it's his knack for telling strong stories, and developing believable characters, or his amazing artwork, we just love the guy's stuff.

And, so, we have to give a shout out to his newest series, RACHEL RISING, which is the story of a girl who wakes up at sunrise on a shallow grave in the woods and discovers the freshly murdered body in the dirt is her own. With the events of the previous night a blur, Rachel looks for the only person she can think to find: her boyfriend Phillip.

But, Phillip has a new girl now, and Rachel is beginning to suspect she rose from the ground for a reason - Revenge.

More Terry Moore awesomeness, with his unique skill of blending genres, and telling awesome stories, we cannot wait to read this one.

THE CREATORS OF CROSSED CONTINUE TO BRING TERROR FROM THE AGE OF ROME WITH CALIGULA #3 THIS WEDNESDAY

caligula3 Dude, if you thought CROSSED was over-the-top, wait'll you read CALIGULA. The publishers of series like CROSSED and NEONOMICON, AVATAR PRESS, are delivering some of the most brutal comics on the stands right now, and Caligula definitely lives up to the same hype that we often lay on CROSSED for being a totally awesome horror comic.

Imagine the television show Spartacus, but with a very dark supernatural twist.

CROSSED writer DAVID LAPHAM unveils a new tale of ancient Rome and the most feared emperor of all time. Just like in the true story, Caligula succumbs to sickness, and then returns mad with power, and totally deranged. However, in Lapham's CALIGULA, we see how a demonic entity may be responsible for Caligula's descent into madness.

In the third issue of CALIGULA, things in Rome are reaching a breaking point, and Caligula's madness is becoming apparent to many. He's gotta go. But, the question is how?

One of our recent horror faces, snag yourself a copy of CALIGULA #1 this Wednesday and find out why we're stoked on this one.

S.H.I.E.L.D VOLUME 2 #2 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY, CONTINUING THE STORY OF MARVEL'S ORIGINAL SUPER-HEROES... LEONARDO DA VINCI, ISSAC NEWTON, MICHELANGELO, and NIKOLAI TESLA

shield22

You guys, by now, know we're big big fans of JONATHAN HICKMAN. Whether it's his recent IMAGE hit THE RED WING, or his mainstream work on kick-ass titles like FF and SECRET WARRIORS.

SHIELD is one of Hickman's current masterpieces, and this current run is the second volume. You can catch up on the first volume available now in hardcover here at Third Eye.

This is a series that really has captivated me, and many of you as well. It's a story of the secret history o the Marvel Universe, centered around a battle between believers in fate, believers in free will, and bystanders caught in between.

And, it stars many of the most notable scientists, artists, and philosophers who've ever lived. Imagine, this Da Vinci soaring through the sky, as Galactus invades the Earth. Seriously. We learn quickly that this is a time-jumping saga where there's two individuals who're at odds with one another... the current master of S.H.I.E.L.D, the immortal Issac Newton, and a former master of S.H.I.E.L.D, Leonardo Da Vinci.

One of my favorite aspects of the series is the portrayal of Newton, and how his eternal life has become an obsession with perfecting humanity's knowledge. Part of the knowledge is knowing how the world will someday end, and he feels it is in no way shameful or natural to follow the path he believes in to its logical conclusion.

He's a good antagonist to Da Vinci's protagonist, and it really makes for a compelling read.

Now in the current volume, we see the world of SHIELD explored further, and we're loving it.

GET THESE BOOKS, Third Eye Faithful, you'll be glad you did.

ELRIC THE BALANCE LOST #2 - MICHAEL MOORCOCK'S DIMENSION-HOPPING SWORD & SORCERY ANTI-HERO RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY

elricthebalancelost2

Last month, I ranted and raved about how stoked I was to seeing Michael Moorcock's incredible cast of characters return to the world of comics with the new ELRIC series from BOOM.

And now, this week, I'm going to tell you how freakin' awesome the new Elric book is. The folks at Boom have done a fantastic job with this one, and by having up and coming writer CHRIS ROBERSON (I, ZOMBIE and STAN LEE'S STARBORN) handling writing chores really helps make this modern fantasy pop.

The story of Elric is compelling, mostly due to the fact that he is one of the original anti-hero characters. The kind of sword and sorcery character that you should be cheering against, and not for, but dammit, he's too cool, you gotta give him his props.

And, of course, with Elric, comes the Multiverse, which Moorcock pretty much single-handedly created.

As signs continue to appear throughout the Multiverse that the Cosmic Balance is in peril, and now, our Eternal Champion is caught in the cross-hairs. Across worlds, Elric, Hawkmoon, and Corum begin to face the force that threatens to overpower them all, while Eric Beck, a modern-day video game designer, must acknowledge that his reoccurring dreams about being Elric aren't all in his head.

An Elric ongoing series? Heck yes, we love it. And, for those of you unfamiliar with Elric, he's the number one creation of Michael Moorcock, a guy who Neil Gaiman called his model for what a writer was, and whom Warren Ellis named as one of the eight core sites in his creative genome.

Missed issue #1? We've got copies in stock to catch you up, snag one this Wednesday!

A MUST FOR FANS OF FABLES.

Try It For Just $1!

snarked0

We were huge fans of both Langridge's work on THOR THE MIGHTY AVENGER, and Boom's MUPPET SHOW comics, so when we heard he was going to be rocking out his very own series at BOOM, we were totally stoked.

If you're a fan of SUPER DINOSAUR, or old school style Nickelodeon, mixed with a bit of Who Shot Roger Rabbit? You'll love SNARKED. In this series, Langridge brings Lewis Carroll's imaginative world to new heights in this new humor series that can only be explain as SNARKED.

Presenting a very fresh, and incredibly modern Langridgean spin on an already-warped classic, the Snarked epic adventures starts here with THE WALRUS and THE CARPENTER from Through The Looking Glass, and yes, that's the same Walrus who inspired the Beatles song I AM THE WALRUS.

It's always good to see more humor-fueled books hitting the stands, and with Snarked carrying the KABOOM all ages banner, this is something you can enjoy, and then pass off to your son, daughter, nephew or niece. :)

'68 from IMAGE COMICS continues to deliver VIET-NAM WAR-era ZOMBIE CRAZINESS THIS WEDNESDAY IN '68 #3

683

You guys know that we're big time horror nuts here at Third Eye, right? So, it's gotta be no surprise that we're loving the rock-n-roll, off-the-wall ZOMBIE saga of '68 from IMAGE COMICS.

This is probably the best zombie comic I've read since WALKING DEAD, and folks, let me just re-iterate one other thing: Nat Jones art is THE PERFECT THING FOR HORROR COMICS.

In the world of '68, we saw the world change on February 13th. The Beatles did not soar to Billboard's #1 with "HEY JUDE." Steve McQueen would not lay claim to the greatest car chase in cinema history with BULLITT. McDonalds would never offer a Big Mac, and hundreds of thousands of children who dreamt of reaching the stars would never get any closer to a space capsule than a glass of Tang.

And, amid the deadly steaming jungles of Vietnam, the violent clash of democracy against the creeping threat of communism stalls as the war-torn People's Republic gives up it's hungry dead.. and that's when the zombies came.

Totally awesome, war story gone horror story, if you're into horror comics, we cannot recommend '68 enough.
