THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 8/10/11

FEAR ITSELF #5 - A MONUMENTAL CHAPTER IN THIS HUGE STORYLINE... HULK VS. THING VS. THOR.

fearitself5

We have been totally hooked on Marvel's big summer blockbuster storyline, FEAR ITSELF, which has delivered some of the most exciting, action-packed, and in-your-face Marvel storytelling in quite some time. I'd say this is probably the best major Marvel event storyline since CIVIL WAR.

In the thick of the FEAR ITSELF storyline, we've seen many revelations, ever since the Red Skull's daughter SIN, woke up the ancient Asgardian God of Serpents, who looks to be even more powerful than Odin himself.

The Serpent is spreading fear, death, and destruction throughout the Marvel Universe, and we've already seen Marvel characters fall to him in battle. And, in last month's FEAR ITSELF #4, we saw the Serpent raise his kingdom to Earth, and fully lay out his conquest.

Now, what's really made FEAR ITSELF interesting, has been how The Serpent has chosen assorted Marvel characters to be his avatars and heralds of destruction. We've seen characters like The Thing, The Hulk, Juggernaut, and more given Mjolnir-esque hammers, and turned into these unstoppable engines of death and despair.

And, with much speculation about the future of Bruce Banner and the Incredible Hulk, we do feel that this week's FEAR ITSELF #5 is going to be a HUGE issue that's worth snagging.

If you've missed out on any of the FEAR ITSELF stuff, or are looking to jump on board fresh, it's a very easy storyline to jump onto as a new reader, and we've got all the chapters in stock and available now to catch you up.

FLASHPOINT WAVE 3: FLASHPOINT EMPEROR AQUAMAN #3 LEADS THE WAY AS WE GET CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE CONCLUSION OF FLASHPOINT, PLUS:FLASHPOINT CITIZEN COLD #3, FLASHPOINT DEADMAN #3, andFLASHPOINT FRANKENSTEIN #3

emperoraquaman3

FLASHPOINT has really been impressing the heck out of us with all of it's tie-in books, and right up there with the FLASHPOINT BATMAN KNIGHT OF VENGEANCE, is FLASHPOINT EMPEROR AQUAMAN, which has been one of the most impressive tie-ins of the bunch. We have loved watching the bloody, and ruthless war between Aquaman's forces and Wonder Woman's Amazons. This week the FLASHPOINT EMPEROR AQUAMAN 3-parter wraps up, and we cannot wait to see the outcome. What is the shocking revelation that Arthur learns that may change the entire course of this war? We'll find out this Wednesday.
Missed issues 1 & 2? We've got copies to catch you up.

flashpointcitizencold3
I've always been a big fan of CAPTAIN COLD, so I was totally stoked when I saw him getting a prominent role.. as a hero, even, in the realm of FLASHPOINT. The character of Cold has always been compelling to me, as he's always been one of those kind of bad guys that's complex, and not really 100% bad, but definitely not 100% good. Anyways, having frequent Geoff Johns collaborator tell this tale of Cold and the rest of the Flash Rogues in regards to where they stand during FLASHPOINT was a great choice, and this one has been quickly becoming another of my favorite FLASHPOINT tie-ins.

Missed issues 1 & 2? We've got copies to catch you up.

flashpointdeadman3Another FLASHPOINT tie-in that's had us hooked (mostly 'cause we're huge Dick Grayson and Deadman fans) has been the FLASHPOINT DEADMAN AND THE FLYING GRAYSONS. The portrayal of DEADMAN in this series has been pretty awesome, and we've loved watching the role that these characters have played in regards to Lois Lane's resistance, the Amazons, and more.

Missed 1 & 2? We've got copies in stock to catch you up.

flashpointfrankenstein3

One of the breakout hits of FLASHPOINT has been the FRANKENSTEIN AND CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN limited series by the very talented JEFF LEMIRE. I've personally REALLY dug this one, and am totally stoked to see the upcoming FRANKENSTEIN #1 that's part of the DC RELAUNCH.

The portrayal of Frankenstein as this timeless soldier who's been anywhere and everywhere that's had an important impact on history is awesome. I mean, heck, he killed Hitler, it doesn't get any bigger than that, ya know?

This series has a very cool HELLBOY-esque feel to it, and we love to see the set-up for the upcoming new series.

Missed 1 and 2? We've got copies in stock to catch you up.

SPIDER ISLAND CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #667 WITH THE OFFICIAL FIRST CHAPTER OF SPIDER ISLAND!

PLUS: CLOAK AND DAGGER RETURN, AND MORE!

asm667

Hot damn, we're totally loving SPIDER ISLAND, and we've only read the prologue so far! But, man, was that a blast or what? And, OK, we're a little biased since we happened to be on the cover of the Prologue, but c'mon, it was a great read, wasn't it? :)

Dan Slott has done a phenomenal job of making Spider-Man a must-read since he came on board as the regular series writer with the BIG TIME story arc that began in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #648. And, ever since, he's been quickly building AMAZING SPIDER-MAN back into one of Marvel's flagship titles. And, we've been loving every second of it.

A couple of weeks ago, many of you hopped aboard with the Prelude issue of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #666, and for some of you, it was your first exposure to Spidey in a long time. And, if I'm right, you probably enjoyed the heck out of it as much as I did, and if you did: you're definitely going to want to snag this week's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #667, which delivers the official first chapter of SPIDER ISLAND.

What is SPIDER ISLAND? We have a full write-up about the storyline, as well as an official checklist that you can read by clicking here. But, in a nutshell: it's the biggest SPIDER-MAN storyline since MAXIMUM CARNAGE. The concept? It's so simple it's genius: all of Manhattan has been infected with a disease that turns them into Spider-Powered individuals. So, you literally have an entire city of people running around with the powers of SPIDER-MAN. And, some of these individuals are literally transforming into Spider-like creatures.

Oh, and it's mostly due to the classic SPIDER-MAN villain, THE JACKAL, who I know many of you remember from the era of the Scarlet Spider. No Scrier appearance though. ;)

Slott writes Spidey like it was the book he was born to be on, and delivers the kind of quick pacing, snappy dialogue, and action-packed storytelling that you want out of a Spider-Man book. And, with Caselli and Ramos handling art chores, the art has NEVER looked better on this one.

Folks, jump aboard this week, and if you haven't already, you only need to grab the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #666 (featuring your's truly on the cover!), and you're good to go with this week's #667.

NICK SPENCER (MORNING GLORIES, ULTIMATE FALLOUT, INFINITE VACATION) writes SPIDER-ISLAND: CLOAK AND DAGGER this week!

cloakdaggersi1

The SPIDER ISLAND tie-ins also kick off this week, with the highly anticipated return of CLOAK AND DAGGER being brought to us courtesy of the one and only NICK SPENCER. Spencer has been responsible for recent IMAGE hits like MORNING GLORIES and INFINITE VACATION, and the upcoming ULTIMATE X-MEN series. In other words: he rocks.

And, this 3-issue limited series will be tying CLOAK AND DAGGER's grand return to SPIDER ISLAND.

With thousands of people running around, doing whatever a Spider can... well, some serious crowd control is needed, and Cloak and Dagger must step into the fray and get a handle on things.

Seriously tho: Nick Spencer + Cloak and Dagger + Emma Rios's awesome art? A must-read. Snag it this week.

And, then rounding out this week's SPIDER ISLAND tie-ups is the SPIDER ISLAND: DEADLY FOES one-shot, which gives us two stories fleshing out the backgrounds of both THE JACKAL and the HOBGOBLIN by SPIDER-ISLAND writer DAN SLOTT.

In this one-shot SPIDER ISLAND tie-in, we see that the Jackal is back, and that his twisted obsessions and experiments continue to target two individuals: PETER PARKER and GWEN STACY.

BALTIMORE: THE CURSE BELLS #1 - Lord Baltimore Returns In This Kick-Ass New Series from MIKE MIGNOLA (HELLBOY)

baltimorecursebells1

We are HUGE, HUGE, HUGE fans of Mike Mignola and his LORD BALTIMORE character that originated in a pulp novel Mignola released a few years ago. And, now, Lord Baltimore returns this week in the new 5-issue limited series BALTIMORE THE CURSE BELLS.

A perfect entry point, and easy to jump into beginning, BALTIMORE THE CURSE BELLS, delivers the kind of macabre, and intricately put together horror storytelling that MIKE MIGNOLA has become known for with his work on BPRD and HELLBOY.

Monsters are overrunning Europe, and Baltimore, the only one who can put an end to these horrors, must find and kill Haigus, the vampire responsible for the chaos. Following reports that Haigus is holed up in a cloister, Baltimore finds a haven full of death and black magic, and the creature at the heart of his obsession.

Another must-read, we can't recommend the adventures of LORD BALTIMORE enough.

WAR OF THE GREEN LANTERNS AFTERMATH #2 - THE END OF AN ERA, AND THE OFFICIAL LEAD-IN TO THE UPCOMING RELAUNCH OF DC'S GREEN LANTERN TITLES.

waroftheglaftermath2We've been GREEN LANTERN uber-fans for the last few years, due in part mostly to Geoff Johns's incredible storytelling and the way he's put together such a compelling take on the Lantern mythos.

And, after the shocking conclusion to the WAR OF THE GREEN LANTERNS (from GREEN LANTERN #67), we've been totally hooked on this epilogue to Johns's LANTERN Mythos.

The WAR OF THE GREEN LANTERN AFTERMATH not only ties up all the loose ends from the WAR, but it paves the way for the upcoming DC RELAUNCH GREEN LANTERN titles, ranging from the core GREEN LANTERN starring a very surprising choice as the new GL to the upcoming RED LANTERNS ongoing series.

Missed the first issue of this two-part series? We've got copies in stock to catch you up to this week's #2.

ULTIMATE FALLOUT #5 - THE ROAD TO THE NEW ULTIMATE UNIVERSE NEARS IT'S END IN THE PENULTIMATE CHAPTER OF THE 6 ISSUE ULTIMATE FALLOUT SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY

ultimatefallout5

In the wake of Peter Parker's death, we've witnessed the entire Ultimate Universe begin to go into a brand new direction, and folks, we haven't been this pumped about the ULTIMATE MARVEL stuff since it's original inception many years ago.

And, with the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE making major media headlines all last week with the debut of the brand new Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales, we're stoked to see the momentum continue to build for this exciting line-up of titles.

If you've never read Marvel's Ultimate line of comics, this is a perfect time to jump on board, and we'd recommend starting with ULTIMATE FALLOUT #1, and catching up to this week's #5. We've got issues 1-4 in stock and available to get you caught up.

Trust us, folks, these comics will be some of the best of the upcoming year, with creative teams that range from NICK SPENCER (MORNING GLORIES, INFINITE VACATION) and JONATHAN HICKMAN (FF, RED WING, PAX ROMANA, SHIELD) to BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, POWERS, SIEGE) and MARK MILLAR (OLD MAN LOGAN, NEMESIS, KICK-ASS!), and ULTIMATE FALLOUT is the perfect point to come aboard.

THE RED WING #2 HITS THIRD EYE THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING TIME-TRAVELING STARFIGHTER PILOTS.. AND IT ROCKS. FROM FF, PAX ROMANA, and S.H.I.E.L.D writer JONATHAN HICKMAN

DOCTOR WHO meets STAR WARS?

redwing2 We are completely, totally, and utterly hooked on Jonathan Hickman's brand new IMAGE COMICS series, THE RED WING, which delivers some of the coolest freakin' stuff we've seen this year in comics.

And, while we're admittedly HUGE Hickman fanboys, there's another reason why we're loving this one so much PITARRA'S amazing artwork, which has a very Moebius kind of feel to it.

Anyways, you need to read RED WING, seriously. It's a must. It's freakin' rad. Let me tell you why: Hickman is a freakin' wizard when it comes to taking stories that play around with alternate histories, and does a terrific job of blending fact and fiction into something completely unique.

The plot of THE RED WING focuses on two young time travel pilots who're heading off to training camp, and who's fathers died in the line of duty working for The Red Wing. And that means, time travel mixed with an endless deadly war.

Hickman brings both Valin and Dominic to life as compelling characters, while showing us the larger scale of THE RED WING. Hickman and Pitarra do a great job of world-building, as they put together a story of hot shot fighter pilots, self-doubting rookies, and the impossible tasks they're made to complete.

And, that's what really makes RED WING interesting... all these unexplained occurrences throughout history, like the disappearance of the Mayan civilization, or the extinction of the dinosaurs... the Red Wing was there for them all.

Missed issue #1? We've still got copies of the sought-after first printings available at cover price here at Third Eye. Snag yourself a copy, along with #2, and find out why this is our favorite new book.

DETECTIVE COMICS #881 - The End of DETECTIVE COMICS! FIND OUT WHAT DRIVES DICK GRAYSON TO BE NIGHTWING AGAIN THIS WEDNESDAY IN DETECTIVE #881

detectivecomics881

We've been singing the praises of Scott Snyder and his run on DETECTIVE COMICS since the very first issue (#871) of his run dropped almost a year ago. And, now, after building one of the most interesting Batman stories we've read in years, for nearly 12 issues... we're ready to see him cap off his run, and set Grayson up for his return to Nightwing.

Not only is this a historic landmark, marking the end of one of the highest numbered comic series of all-time, but it's also a very important issue in regards to the upcoming NIGHTWING #1 that's part of the DC RELAUNCH.

Oh, and it just so happens that Snyder has been telling one of the best freakin' JOKER stories we've read in any Bat-book in ages.

Seriously, if you like Batman, there's two books you HAVE to be reading right now: DETECTIVE COMICS and GATES OF GOTHAM. Both by Snyder, and both being two fine representations of just how awesome he will be on the upcoming relaunch of BATMAN with GREG CAPULLO.

Wanna go back and collect the full run of Snyder on DETECTIVE? You know we've gotcha covered ,with copies of DETECTIVE COMICS #871-#880 in stock and available to catch you up.

GHOST RIDER #2 CONTINUES THE KICK-ASS NEW ONGOING GHOST RIDER SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY

Meet The New Ghost Rider!

ghostrider2How can you not love Ghost Rider? There is no character in the history of comics that looks cooler painted on the side of some late '70s metal van than Ghost Rider. Okay, MAYBE SILVER SURFER, but that's it. \

Anyways, we loved the reinvention of the Ghost Rider mythos that Jason Aaron did a couple of years ago, and this brand new ongoing series features a brand new Ghost Rider that we are totally stoked about.

In the first issue of this new series that ties into the events of FEAR ITSELF, we saw the new Spirit of Vengeance taking on the Serpent's first avatar, SIN, and holding her own in battle. Now, what does the mysterious Adam have planned for the new Ghost Rider next, and is it cause for humanity's salvation or eternal damnation?

Meanwhile, Johnny Blaze is shown a future that confirms his worst fears regarding the new Ghost Rider. Can he take on his successor armed only with a shotgun, and an old school motorcycle?

Missed issue #0.1 and #1 of this series? We've got copies of both in stock to catch you up.

KIDNAPPING KEVIN SMITH GN - AWESOME. A GRAPHIC NOVEL ABOUT TWO SLACKERS KIDNAPPING KEVIN SMITH HIMSELF AND FORCING HIM TO WRITE A SCREENPLAY FOR THEM.

kidnappingkevinsmithgnI am stoked for this little indie gem, folks. Why? Well, first off: I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan, but heck, I think that goes for just about anyone who's big into this hobby, right? Secondly: I'm a huge fan of Mike and Laura Allred as an art-team. They kick ass, and when Mike's being colored by Laura, it's some of the best looking art on the shelves. And, then third: it just sounds really freakin' funny.

The plot, it's simple, right? Two slackers hatch a plot to kidnap indie filmmaker, Kevin Smith and attempt to force him to write an original screenplay for them. Of course, this all backfires on them and Smith manages to contact the outside world and alert them to what's going down.

Check it out this Wednesday!

MORNING GLORIES #11 - THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEXT ISSUE OF ONE OF OUR FAVORITE IMAGE SERIES ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY

Not Reading This Series? Pick the trade up with issues 1-6 for only $9.99

morningglories11 Morning Glories has kept us hooked for almost a year straight now, and we've loved every single issue of this phenomenal new IMAGE series. Nick Spencer, one of the architects of the NEW ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, delivers big on this one, and he should, considering this is the title that really brought him to everyone's attention in a major way.

The story of MORNING GLORIES is about a treacherous prep school where kid's with potential to go onto Ivy League colleges are sent to be prepared. Of course, the school is totally screwed up, and the mysteries that reside within are what keep us coming back and back to this series.

Imagine LOST meets Brian K. Vaughn's RUNAWAYS, and that sums up MORNING GLORIES well.

It's hard for me to go into too much detail, because much like WALKING DEAD, this series is VERY spoiler-heavy and surprise-oriented, so just trust me: snag the first trade paperback for $9.99 and find out why we freakin' love this book.

VENGEANCE #2 - Who Are the Marvel Universe's Next Generation of Super-Villains? And, what role do BULLSEYE and MAGNETO play in their machinations?

FROM THE WRITER OF BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER

A MUST READ.

vengeance2

You guys HAVE to read this one if you missed it the first go around. It's really freakin' cool. Joe Casey, writer of recent hits like BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER, goes nuts with this brand new series that does a phenomenal job of mixing old school and new school comics storytelling.

The first issue introduces two main plots that run through the series, with various subplots popping up throughout. The two plots show us a new Teen Brigade, following in the footsteps of Rick Jones and other groups dating back to the first World War, and bringing in characters like Angel and Beak as support staff.

The plot of the series seems to be focused on showing us the viciousness and complexity of new generations of superheroes and super-villains, as we see the lines between hero and villain blurring even more.

A really cool read, and a must for fans of series like IRREDEEMABLE or AVENGERS ACADEMY, check this one out this week!

WARGODDESS0Nobody does the gore quite like AVATAR PRESS, and under their BOUNDLESS imprint, LADY DEATH writer MIKE WOLFER debuts a brand new AVATAR series, which is fittingly titled WAR GODDESS.

This new ongoing monthly series brings to life a whole new world that features some of the most memorable indie characters from the last couple of decades, ranging from Pandora to Purgatory and beyond.

For centuries, the sins of man ravaged the Earth, and our only salvation lay in the hands of the very being who unleashed the evil upon us. But the unending battle has finally been won, the mythical box has been closed, and the immortal Pandora has settled into a life of exploration of the world her impulsive actions once nearly destroyed. But true evil cannot be contained forever, and an even more hideous scourge is about to be released upon the dimension of the living in an invasion of cataclysmic proportions.

boostergold47Okay, folks, just so you know, the BOOSTER GOLD FLASHPOINT tie-ins have been OFF-THE-HOOK. Considering Booster's whole thing is jumping through time and space, it only makes sense that he'd be tied into this series in a MAJOR WAY.

Beginning in BOOSTER GOLD #44, each issue of the BOOSTER GOLD tie-ins have shown us just what the heck is happening on the OTHER side of FLASHPOINT in regards to the DCU, considering aside from Barry Allen, Booster is the only DCU Hero who's in the know about just how catastrophic this whole FLASHPOINT thing really is.

CRIMINAL: LAST OF THE INNOCENT #3 - THE BEST CRIME COMIC YOU'LL EVER READ GETS IT'S LATEST INSTALLMENT THIS WEDNESDAY

criminallastofinnocent3I'm seriously going to write about CRIMINAL every time a new issue comes out, because this, Third Eye Faithful, is THE best crime comic I have ever read, and continues to be.

I've gone on and on and on many times before about why I love CRIMINAL, whether it's the level of craftsmanship that creative team BRUBAKER and PHILLIPS put into each and every issue, or the always entertaining and informative back matter packed into the back of each issue... but all I can say is: Read this comic. It's just good stuff. That's all there is to it.

You can jump on fresh without any prior knowledge of earlier storylines with CRIMINAL LAST OF THE INNOCENT #1, as this is a brand new arc, featuring new characters in the foreground.

And, in this third issue, we learn how sometimes the coverup of a crime can be worse than the actual crime.

CRIMINAL is totally Third Eye Approved. Try this one, and if you dig it, go back and check out the previous storylines available in trade paperback.

Missed issues 1 & 2? We've got both in stock to catch you up.

BLUE ESTATE #5 - ONE OF THE BEST NEW IMAGE SERIES OF 2011... IF QUENTIN TARANTINO WROTE COMICS, THEY'D BE BLUE ESTATE.

blueestate5Okay, if CRIMINAL is the best crime comic ever written, then BLUE ESTATE is the best crime comic ever written that's not CRIMINAL. Seriously though, CRIMINAL and BLUE ESTATE are two different kinds of crime stories, but both are amazing.

In the world of BLUE ESTATE, it's less of a dark and dismal noir, and more of the machine-gun dialogue and smooth pacing of something like RESERVOIR DOGS, JACKIE BROWN, or PULP FICTION. A very post-modern take on the crime genre.

And, whether it's the washed up Steven Segal-esque movie star who's in over his head with Russian mobsters, or his plotting wife, or even the antithesis of private investigators that's on the case... the world of BLUE ESTATE is a fascinating and compelling one.

If you're a fan of Elmore Leonard novels, or movies like JACKIE BROWN, LAYER CAKE, or PULP FICTION, you need to pick up on this book.

We've got copies of 1-4 in stock to catch you up to this week's #5.

Click here to add BLUE ESTATE to your subscription box.

STAFF PICKS

STEVE: FLASHPOINT #4 - I'm so hooked on this storyline, it's ridiculous, and this was most definitely a high point in the series.

TRISH: PUNISHER #1 - For a long time I thought only Jason Aaron and Garth Ennis could do the Punisher justice, but Greg Rucka.. welcome to the list.

TORMA: ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4 - I've been really liking the direction of all the ULTIMATE titles and thought that this was an AWESOME read.

TONY (PRINCE FREDERICK): SEVERED #1 - I love AMERICAN VAMPIRE and Scott Snyder wowed me all over again with SEVERED.
