THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 9/7/11

DC RELAUNCH, THE NEW 52 DELIVERS 13 NEW #1s THIS WEDNESDAY, WITHACTION COMICS #1, and DETECTIVE COMICS #1 LEADING THE CHARGE.

actioncomics1a
All right, folks, it’s going to be a busy month for DC COMICS this month, so you can expect for us to be giving special attention to each of their new launch titles in our newsletter. We’re committed to giving you guys the full scoop, and honest opinions of what we think of each title.
This week, we’ve got 13 of these bad boys hitting the store, so read on, to get the inside scoop on each.
ACTION COMICS #1 – Grant Morrison (ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, BATMAN AND ROBIN writer) & Rags Morales (IDENTITY CRISIS artist) team up to bring us THE best SUPERMAN comic.. EVER. :) Do NOT miss this historic first issue of the NEW ACTION COMICS!
As one of the flagship “core” NEW 52 titles, ACTION COMICS arrives this Wednesday to deliver us modern-day 21st century spin on the Man of Steel, with this series that starts off telling a YEAR ONE-style origin story set 10 years in the past of the NEW DCU.

There’s so many reasons to be excited about this one, but the most obvious is the creative team that’s on board: Grant Morrison wrote one of THE best out-of-continuity SUPERMAN stories ever with ALL STAR SUPERMAN, and Rags Morales is the very talented artist who delivered pages upon pages of emotion, and excitement in IDENTITY CRISIS. Pairing these two guys up to tackle SUPERMAN is really enough on it’s own to get us pumped, but there’s more to it than just the creative team.

The direction of ACTION COMICS, is very similar to JUSTICE LEAGUE, in that it not just tells the origins and history of SUPERMAN, but also helps put the history of the DC UNIVERSE in perspective, with it’s first arc, being set 10 years in the past of the new DCU. This is five years before the events of JUSTICE LEAGUE #1, and helps give an insight into a young Clark Kent who’s first arrived in Metropolis, and hasn’t quite grown into SUPERMAN yet. Instead, his powers are not yet as amplified, his costume hasn’t been created, and his ideals aren’t as rounded yet.

And, in the process, we also get to see a very early glimpse at the history of the DCU, which is a treat in and of itself.

The Superman we meet in ACTION COMICS is a working class hero, who champions against corruption in the system, and has no problem throwing down with corrupt Metropolis city police anymore than he does with alien invaders. He’s a Superman who knows he’s powerful, but isn’t yet sure of HOW powerful, and hasn’t yet interacted with many other superhumans on his level.

And, he’s a real bad-ass.

A must-read, and guaranteed to be one of the bigger hits of the NEW 52, we cannot wait to get our hands on ACTION COMICS #1 this Wednesday.

ANIMAL MAN #1 - ONE OF MY OWN PERSONAL MOST ANTICIPATED DC NEW 52 TITLES! A SUPERHERO / HORROR COMIC HYBRID FROM THE WRITER OF “SWEET TOOTH”
animalman1
I’m totally stoked about the upcoming relaunch of ANIMAL MAN that hits this Wednesday. I’ll go on record as saying that Grant Morrison’s ANIMAL MAN run in the ’80s and ’90s is one of my favorite superhero comics of all time, and if you’ve never read it, I highly recommend snagging the first trade and giving it, in all it’s 4th wall breaking glory, a go.

Now, this Wednesday, a talented young writer who’s most known for his Vertigo work (is this sounding familiar?) on the post-apocalyptic quest adventure SWEET TOOTH, JEFF LEMIRE, kicks off the return of ANIMAL MAN.

The original ANIMAL MAN, Buddy Baker, went from being a super-man to a family man, and now, his picture perfect family life begins to disrupt as his daughter, Maxine, develops powers of her own, and he must show her how to handle having the ability to take on the natural abilities of any animal she pleases.

The new ANIMAL MAN series explores the much darker aspects of the DC NEW 52, and reads very much like a superhero/horror hybrid. And, if you’re familiar with Lemire’s work on series like SWEET TOOTH, or the indie gem ESSEX COUNTY, then you know the man knows how to do horror, and do it good.

On top of all of that, the artwork of Travel Foreman looks INCREDIBLE, and brings Lemire’s story to life in a major way, capturing every eerie nuance of his storytelling.

A must-read, we’re totally loving this one, and it’s one of my own personal most anticipated NEW 52 titles.

BATGIRL #1 - BARBARA GORDON RETURNS AS BATGIRL IN THIS CUTTING EDGE NEW SERIES FEATURING ONE OF THE DCU’S MOST BELOVED CHARACTERS!
batgirl1a
When I first read that they were putting Barbara Gordon back in the cowl, I was a little unsure of how to feel about that. On one hand, I love the idea of having a kick-ass BATGIRL book, and the series has had a long tradition of being one of those “best kept secrets” kinda reads, whether it was the recent VERONICA MARS-esque Stephanie Brown run, or the now-classic CASSANDRA CAIN take, the title has a history of quality.

However, I’ve grown up pretty much knowing Barbara Gordon as Oracle, so it was a bit of a surprise to see her returning. However, after having seen pages of the upcoming BATGIRL #1, and reading some interviews… I’m sold. Barbara Gordon IS Batgirl, and I’m totally stoked to see her returning in this new series.
Gail Simone is no stranger to writing Barbara, and she delivers in a big way here, as we learn the how and the why of how Barbara is able to walk after the brutal attack by the Joker in the KILLING JOKE.

With the extremel talented artwork of Adrian Syaf, this one looks great as well, and dude, this is going to be a breakout of the DC NEW 52. I gotta tell you, I’m impressed.

BATWING #1 - “UNDER THE RED HOOD” creator JUDD WINICK PICKS UP ON THEMES FROM BATMAN INCORPORATED AS THE BATMAN OF AFRICA DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY IN BATWING #1
batwing1a
Another DC RELAUNCH title we’re really looking forward to is the upcoming BATWING, which looks to be another breakout hit for the NEW 52. The very talented Judd Winick, who most of you know as the guy responsible for the now-classic Jason Todd story, UNDER THE RED HOOD, is handling the writing chores.

The storyline spins directly out of the events of Grant Morrison’s killer BATMAN INCORPORATED storyline (which we have all 7 issues in stock and available now for those of you who’d like to backtrack some), and introduces us to the lead of Bruce Wayne’s international BATMAN INC concept: Batwing, the Batman of Africa.

The storyline reads freakin’ great, and the character is one of the most compelling new characters in the line-up of DC NEW 52 titles. I’m personally also very excited to read about this one, and watch the DC UNIVERSE unfold in an exciting, new international arena.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1 - ANOTHER FLAGSHIP DC UNIVERSE TITLE DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH THE HISTORIC DETECTIVE COMICS #1, EMPHASIZING BRUCE WAYNE AS THE GREAT DETECTIVE HE IS
detectivecomics1
Just like ACTION COMICS, and JUSTICE LEAGUE are proven flagship titles of the new DC UNIVERSE, so is this week’s DETECTIVE COMICS #1, from Tony Daniel, which focuses on the Caped Crusader as the GREAT DETECTIVE, as he’s become known throughout the years.

Detective Comics brings in a very high-tech CSI-style of storytelling to the world of Bruce Wayne, allowing the book to tell some edgier stories that show the real bad guys of Gotham City — deranged serial killers — the scum of the earth — the kind of characters you’d see in a film-noir. Dark, gritty, intense storylines that wouldn’t quite fit into a more superhero-y oriented Batman title.
Just like JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 from last week, DETECTIVE COMICS’s first story arc takes place at the same time point, which is 5 years in the past of the current DC UNIVERSE, and before superheroes are commonly accepted by society.

Bruce Wayne has been operating as the Bat for half a decade, and the police want him shut down.

And of course, there’s also… THE JOKER.

DETECTIVE is looking to be a hit, and we cannot wait to see more on this one.

GREEN ARROW #1 - GREEN ARROW GETS THE ALL-STAR TREATMENT AS SUPERSTAR ARTISTS DAN JURGENS (DEATH OF SUPERMAN) & GEORGE PEREZ (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS) BRING THEIR TALENTS TO THE NEW SERIES! A MUCH MORE BRUTAL, RUTHLESS OLIVER QUEEN DEBUTS!
greenarrow1a
After countless tragedies have befallen him, Oliver Queen has finally gone over the edge, and really taken on the role of a HUNTER in the new DC UNIVERSE. Keeping in tune with the tone and feel of the now-classic Mike Grell epic, LONGBOW HUNTERS, the new GREEN ARROW series delivers a fascinating, and hard-nosed approach to the character of Oliver Queen.
Green Arrow is on the hunt. Driven by inner demons, Ollie Queen travels the world and brings outlaws to justice… by breaking every law imaginable. Now armed with cutting edge weaponry, and illegally gained intel, the Green Arrow has no problems shooting first and asking questions later.
The tone of the book is very reminiscent of films like LEON THE PROFESSIONAL / THE PROFESSIONAL, and TAKEN (with Liam Neison), as it’s a very revenge-driven, hardcore kind of read.
I really dug the first issue, and am looking forward to seeing the direction the series heads.

HAWK AND DOVE #1 - IMAGE COMICS CO-FOUNDER ROB LIEFELD RETURNS TO THE DYNAMIC DUO THAT MADE HIM A MAJOR NAME TO COMICS FANS EVERYWHERE!
hawkanddove1a
One of the obvious comparisons that many have made to the DC RELAUNCH and the NEW 52 is to Marvel Comics circa the launch of X-MEN #1. And, with Rob Liefeld coming on board with Geoff Johns protege, Sterling Gates, to bring back HAWK AND DOVE, fresh off their revival in BRIGHTEST DAY.
The dynamic of the HAWK AND DOVE characters has always been an intriguing read, and we’re stoked to see Liefeld back in the game with both HAWK AND DOVE, and his recent IMAGE COMICS collaboration with ROBERT KIRKMAN on THE INFINITE.
In Hawk and Dove, Hank Hall is not happy. He’s not happy to have Dawn Granger as a new partner in his war on crime. He’s not happy that she’s dating Deadman. He’s not happy to learn that someone is trying to plunge the U.S into a new civil war. And, folks, when Hank Hall, aka HAWK isn’t happy… well no one is Happy.

JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL #1 - STRAIGHT FROM THE PAGES OF JL: GENERATION LOST, THE MOST BELOVED JUSTICE LEAGUE LINE-UP RETURNS
justiceleagueinternational1 Another of the NEW 52 that’s got me super stoked is the return of JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL. I’m a HUGE long-time fan of the old school Giffen/DeMatties/Maguire days of JLI, and seeing the comedic tone of the DCU return with the JLI is pretty awesome.
If you were fan of the recent JUSTICE LEAGUE GENERATION LOST series, you’ll totally love JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL as it spins right out of that run.
With the growing presence of super beings around the world, the United Nations resolves to create a new group called JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL.
Batman, Booster Gold, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, August General in Iron, Fire, Ice, Vixen and Rocket Red are charged with promoting unity and trust — but the hard part is reaching that goal without killing each other first.

DC BRINGS GRITTY, GEARS OF WAR-STYLE WARFARE TO THE DC UNIVERSE WITH MEN OF WAR #1 THIS WEDNESDAY
A MUST FOR FANS OF THE LOSERS, GEARS OF WAR, KILLZONE & MORE FEATURING SGT ROCK
menofwar1
One of the most impressive aspects of the DC RELAUNCH and the NEW 52 is how DC is fleshing out their universe with different genres of comics that fit nicely into the grand scheme of the DC UNIVERSE.

One genre of comics that has always had a rich history, but has been under-represented in the last few years, has been the war comic. I mean, c’mon, we’ve seen some GREAT war comics over the years, and with the exception of Garth Ennis’s fantastic WAR STORIES and BATTLEFIELDS, there’s been very little in the way of good war comics.

Well, DC is changing that this Wednesday with the first of their new war-themed comics, MEN OF WAR, which features a young, headstrong soldier known as Joe Rock, who assumes command of Easy Company — a team of ex-military men turned contractors. Will they survive the battle-scarred landscape carved by the DCU’s super-villains?

That’s what we find out in the debut of MEN OF WAR this Wednesday.

OMAC #1- Pure comic madness on every page in this JACK KIRBY-worship heavy new series rom DAN DIDIO and KEITH GIFFEN
omac1a
Here’s another of the NEW 52 I’m personally pretty stoked about, just due to the sheer comic book madness that inhabits this one. If there was one book in the DC NEW 52 that reads like a love letter to everything that is awesome about comics, then it’s OMAC by DAN DIDIO and KEITH GIFFEN.

Originally a JACK KIRBY character way back in the day, and then a crazy killer robot army later on, OMAC returns to it’s roots of the over-the-top comic madness that it originally captured back in the Silver Age.

This comic crackles with Jack Kirby-esque adventure, and awesomeness, and Keith Giffen is BRINGING IT with every page. I’m freakin’ enthralled here.

In the new OMAC series, the all-seeing Brother Eye satellite has unleashed a new beast upon the dc universe. Kevin Kho has become an unwilling participant in a war between Checkmate and Brother Eye as he’s transformed into the One Machine Army Corps known only… as OMAC.

STATIC SHOCK #1- THE DC COMICS FAN FAVORITE GETS HIS OWN ONGOING SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY AND IT LOOKS GREAT!
staticshock1
I’ve been saying for years that Static Shock needs his own series, as the character has proven to be one of the freshest new characters DC’s introduced in the last couple of decades, and has maintained a huge fan base over the years.
So, when I saw Static Shock amongst the NEW 52 that DC was releasing this fall, I was totally stoked. And, folks, they’ve done a great job on this one, with Scott McDaniel delivering a very fantastic job on the art chores, and John Rozum providing a great assist on the writing chores.
In Static Shock, the brilliant, slightly awkward high school student Virgil Hawkins transformers into the cocky electromagnetic hero Static.
A mysterious tragedy forces the Hawkins family to relocate from Dakota to New York City, and Virgil embarks upon new adventures in a new high school and a new internship with S.T.A.R Labs.
And of course, with a new locale, come a whole new cast of super-villains for Static.
One of my personal favorites to come out of the DC RELAUNCH, make sure you take a peek at Static this Wednesday.

STORMWATCH #1 - A MATURE-THEMED LOOK AT THE SUPERHEROES OF THE DC UNIVERSE FEATURING MARTIAN MANHUNTER AND THE AUTHORITY
stormwatch1a
Okay, I gotta tell you: I was a HUGE fan of the AUTHORITY back when it first began under WARREN ELLIS and then later, MARK MILLAR. I still consider it to be one of the most cutting edge and pioneering comic book series of the 21st century, and consider it as being responsible for many of the comics that’re now modern classics, like THE ULTIMATES, WANTED, and more.
As part of the NEW 52, DC is integrating many of it’s Wildstorm characters into the DCU. And, Stormwatch brings the mature tone and feel of The Authority to the DC UNIVERSE in a big way.
They are Stormwatch, a dangerous superhuman police force whose existence is kept secret from the world. Jack Hawksmoor leads the crew, as things kick off with a mission to recruit the two deadliest human beings on the planet: MIDNIGHTER and APOLLO. And, if the duo says no? Martian Manhunter may have to change their minds with his psychic powers.

SWAMP THING #1 - Scott Snyder of AMERICAN VAMPIRE & GATES OF GOTHAM FAME DELIVERS ONE OF MY MOST ANTICIPATED RELAUNCH TITLES
swampthing1
Okay, here it is: my own personal most anticipated DC RELAUNCH title. Swamp Thing is going to be… AWESOME. Like, ALAN MOORE’s run on SWAMP THING awesome.
Why? It’s Scott Snyder, Third Eye Faithful, who’s showing again and again that he’s turning out to be one of the most promising writers working in comics right now. He first caught our attention with AMERICAN VAMPIRE (you can read an interview we did last year with Scott when AMERICAN VAMPIRE launched by clicking here), and continued to impress us with his work on DETECTIVE COMICS and BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM.
Now, Snyder is about to launch what I believe is going to be the book that turns him into a superstar, and that’s SWAMP THING.
The character of SWAMP THING has been slowly creeping back into the public conscious of comic book fans after Geoff Johns’s wonderful rebirth of the character in BRIGHTEST DAY.
Snyder has shown us how he has a fantastic knack for telling a great horror comic story, and that’s exactly what SWAMP THING needs.
In Snyder’s new SWAMP THING series, Yanick Paquette helps bring the character o life in a creepy, and sinister way, and man.. the pages look breathtaking.
Pure horror creepiness, this will be one of the best of the DC RELAUNCH, and we cannot wait to see it.

As many of you guys know, we’re HUGE fans of the indie darling, STUFF OF LEGEND, which has proven to be one of the best, most well-received independent all-ages comics since BONE first debuted.
And, if you’re already reading STUFF OF LEGEND, then you know that the folks at TH3RD WORLD have a reputation for putting out a quality product, from the storytelling, the artwork, to the quality of the presentation… they’ve got it all covered in one slick package.

MORNING GLORIES #12 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING ANOTHER FANTASTIC ISSUE OF ONE OF OUR FAVORITE IMAGE SERIES! NOT READING MORNING GLORIES? SNAG THE VOLUME 1 TRADE PAPERBACK FOR JUST $9.99 and CATCH UP!
morningglories12
One of our big-time IMAGE COMICS favorites right now has gotta be MORNING GLORIES, which has managed to keep us as enthralled and intrigued as we were when we first finished #1.
Imagine Brian K. Vaughn’s RUNAWAYS series mixed with the TV series LOST, and that helps sum up how we feel about RUNAWAYS.
It’s also VERY easy to spoiler this one, so let me just keep myself from talking too much here. :) All I can say is that if you want a good horror comic with loads of twists, and turns, and some very strong characterization… read MORNING GLORIES.
Haven’t read the series? Start with the first trade paperback which collects issues 1-6 for only $9.99. You won’t be disappointed.

GARTH ENNIS’S JENNIFER BLOOD #4 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING MORE STRAIGHT-FOR-THE-THROAT VIGILANTE JUSTICE! A MUST FOR FANS OF “THE BOYS”, “PREACHER”, and “PUNISHER MAX”
jenniferblood4
It’s no secret to most that I’m a HUGE Garth Ennis fan. And, no matter what the man is writing, I’m going to be digging. And, that’s why I’ve gotta give a shout out to the fourth issue of his kick-ass DIRTY HARRY-esque JENNIFER BLOOD series that’s dropping this Wednesday.
A suburban wife and mother by day, and a ruthless vigilante by night…. how could this not be awesome?
Seriously though, Ennis delivers a hard-as-nails, brutal and unrelenting vigilante story that conjures up ’70s cult films like Ms. 45 and THRILLER, mixed with a lot of his PUNISHER MAX work (very reminiscent of the WIDOWMAKER arc).
Missed the first 3 issues? Don’t worry, we’ve got copies of each in stock to get you caught up to this week’s #4.

BRIGHTEST DAY HARDCOVER VOLUME 3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY COLLECTING THE FINALE TO THE SERIES THAT PAVED THE ROAD TO THE DC RELAUNCH
brightestdayhc3
The long-awaited third and final hardcover in the BRIGHTEST DAY series hits this Wednesday wrapping up the maxi series that paved the way for the DC RELAUNCH.
Wondering how characters like AQUAMAN, HAWK AND DOVE, HAWKMAN, DEADMAN, GREEN LANTERN, FIRESTORM, and more came back into prominence in the DC UNIVERSE? Brightest Day is a FANTASTIC primer for ANYONE who’s just jumping on board to the DCU with the new RELAUNCH titles, and gives you a great background on many of the NEW 52′s heavy-hitters.

THE PUNISHER #3- GREG RUCKA IS BRINGING US THE BEST DAMN PUNISHER RUN SINCE GARTH ENNIS’S PUNISHER MAX. SERIOUSLY. MISSED 1 & 2? WE’VE GOT COPIES IN STOCK TO CATCH YOU UP.
punisher3
While there’s been many incarnations of THE PUNISHER as an ongoing series, there’s been very few that have managed to really captivate us, but I gotta tell you: Rucka’s current PUNISHER ongoing series may be the best work done on the character since GARTH ENNIS’S PUNISHER MAX series.
The way that Rucka writes the PUNISHER is very unique, and the series itself lends itself to a mash-up of what Ennis did with MAX and then the classic Mike Zeck PUNISHER WAR ZONE era stuff.
With the PUNISHER being portrayed as almost a sort of force of nature, an eventuality that falls upon any law enforcement officer or criminal dwelling in NYC, we’re shown a very cool outside look at what it must be like to live in a world where a man with a giant skull on his chest kills hundreds of human beings a year.
Keeping in tune with Ennis’s portrayal of Frank Castle as a damaged individual with sociopathic leanings and a very dark sense of justice, Rucka keeps the book gritty, and rooted in reality, while throwing in just enough of the MARVEL UNIVERSE to remind us that the PUNISHER does operate in a city where flying men and fire-breathing women happen to exist.
I’m a huge fan so far, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I recommend snagging issues 1 & 2 and catching up to this week’s #3.

WOLVERINE DEBT OF DEATH ONE-SHOT DELIVERS AN INCREDIBLE READ FROM CALIGULA & CROSSED writer DAVID LAPHAM and IMMORTAL IRON FIST / 5 RONIN COVER ARTIST DAVID AJA
 wolverinedebtofdeath1
WOLVERINE always makes for good one-shot material. I mean, he’s one of those MAN WITH NO NAME-esque characters that really just lends himself to the format.
I’ll be honest, I don’t know a whole lot to expect from this one.. but it looked so freakin’ cool, and had such a great creative team, I had to shout it out.
Taking up the writing chores is DAVID LAPHAM, the demented mind behind CROSSED PSYCHOPATH and CALIGULA, and handling art chores is the cover artist of this past year’s hit favorite 5 RONIN.
It looks bloody, violent, and has giant robots? How can this not rock?
