THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 11/9/11

THE MARVEL UNIVERSE BEGINS A NEW ERA WITH THIS WEDNESDAY'S MARVEL POINT ONE ONE-SHOT
This Wednesday, the Marvel Universe paves the way for a bold new direction going into 2012 with this special POINT ONE one-shot that serves as the springboard and launching point of several EPIC story lines that will rock the Marvel Universe in 2012. This is NOT an anthology book, nor is it a sampler, this is a giant-oversized full story book that provides the crucial set-ups for some of the biggest story lines we've seen come out of Marvel in quite some time.. and yes, that IS the Phoenix on the cover there. :)
Marvel was super cool enough to give Third Eye an advance read of this one-shot last month, and I've been doing my best to keep all the cool stuff they've got coming in 2012 under my hat until the release of this one.
And, really, if I go too deep into detail about the plot of the POINT ONE one-shot, I'll be spoilering some really cool stuff.
So, instead, let me just start by saying that this book sets up story lines not just for ONE corner of the Marvel Universe, but for the entire Marvel U. There's some stuff we've kind of seen on the horizon for a minute now, and then there's some straight up surprises of brand new stuff that we had no idea was coming.
The creators involved in this one issue alone are freakin' epic... Matt Fraction (FEAR ITSELF), Ed McGuinness (Red Hulk), Jeph Loeb (BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN), David Lapham (CROSSED), Chris Yost (X-MEN: SECOND COMING), Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers), Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), and more.
I'm going to stop my rambling now, and just say this: pick yourself a copy of this up on Wednesday, and get in on the ground floor of the biggest move for the Marvel U that we've seen in quite some time.

MARVEL DEBUTS THE BIGGEST SPIDER-MAN SERIES SINCE TODD MCFARLANE'S ORIGINAL "SPIDER-MAN" ONGOING WITH THIS WEDNESDAY'S AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #1
GET YOUR'S ON WEDNESDAY & BE ENTERED TO WIN A FULL-SIZE AVENGING SPIDER-MAN POSTER
And, then following up the major splash Marvel is making this Wednesday with POINT ONE, we've got the debut of what is sure to be one of the biggest new MARVEL titles of 2012 with AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #1.
I've read through most of the first issue of this one, and I gotta tell you: I'm impressed. Combined with the amount of major buzz this book has been getting, I really feel that this could be the biggest Spider-Man release since Todd McFarlane's original SPIDER-MAN #1 from nearly 20 years ago.
But, lets talk about the true star of the show here, Third Eye Faithful... Joe Madureira. Joe Mad was a legendary comic superstar in the '90s who got his start doing X-Men during the AGE OF APOCALYPSE era, and then making the book his own for many years to follow. He eventually launched out on his own to do the creator-owned fantasy/sci-fi series BATTLE CHASERS, and then, he got snatched up by the video game industry for his incredible art skills.
Joe Mad is still one of the best guys in the game, and if anything, he's gotten even better since he was kicking out the jams in the comic industry back then.
Now, he's returned to make a huge splash on the first new ONGOING Spider-Man title to be launched in almost ten years. And, folks, you know that's a big deal.
The book itself is a freakin' blast to read, and has the same kind of energy and excitement that DC is channeling with their NEW 52. It's the kind of Spider-Man book where you only need the most basic knowledge of Spider-Man to pick it up, and jump right on, and the action kicks off right from the get go.
Great artwork, a super tight story, loads of killer cameos by Marvel icons... AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #1 is one of the biggest new Marvel releases we've seen come down the pike in a while.
And, as a special bonus to celebrate the launch of the title, we're going to be entering everyone who purchases a copy on release day (Wednesday) into a prize drawing to win a full-size AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #1 poster.

DC NEW 52 WAVE 3 BRINGS US GREEN LANTERN #3 THIS WEDNESDAY AS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING NEW TITLES IN THE NEW 52
DC Comics has been straight up killing it these last couple of months with the DC NEW 52 and all the recently relaunched titles they've been shooting our way. We really can't stress how impressed we've all been with how great the new line-up of books has been.
And among our favorites, is the new GREEN LANTERN series by GEOFF JOHNS and DOUG MAHNKE. Johns has been making the Green Lantern stuff a must-read for years now, with his past work on stuff like SINESTRO CORPS WAR, BLACKEST NIGHT, RAGE OF THE RED LANTERNS, GL REBIRTH and SECRET ORIGIN.. and now, he's telling a brand new chapter, with a recently re-inducted SINESTRO operating as the new GREEN LANTERN of Earth's space sector.
We LOVE the approach to Sinestro as the new GL, and totally dig the way the character retains his arrogance and the chip on his shoulder, while at the same time being gently moved back onto the side of angels. The cool thing about the Sinestro character is how he never really was as evil as many villains are in the first place, and there's been a ton done in recent years to foreshadow his redemption arc.
One of our personal favorites so far, and of course, the plight of a ringless Hal Jordan is explored within as well, so you know that this one is a MUST READ.
Missed 1 & 2 ? We've got copies of each in stock to catch you up.

THE BOYS VOLUME 9 BRINGS US THE PENULTIMATE TRADE PAPERBACK INSTALLMENT OF GARTH ENNIS'S (CROSSED, PREACHER) DARK TAKE ON THE WORLD OF SUPERHEROES
The Boys are nearing their end, and we're gonna be sad to see one of our favorite monthly series end... but, dammit, we are enjoying the ride to the end of the road in the meantime.
With only one more trade paperback left after this week's vol.9, we can't believe that it's been 5 years since the series first launched. It's crazy how much the comic book market has changed in those 5 years. A perfect example: when THE BOYS first began, it was under DC's Wildstorm imprint, but after only a handful of issues, was canceled due to the editorial at DC being extremely uncomfortable with the way that characters similar to their biggest icons (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) were being portrayed in this dark take on a world where superheroes are power-hungry, and negligent, and a group of individuals who've lost their lives in the crossfire of superhero fights work for the government policing them.
The series was quickly snatched up by Dynamite, and has turned into the mega cult hit it has become. And, if you look at a lot of the stuff coming out of DC nowadays, it's more closer in tone to THE BOYS than it is the stuff it was publishing back then. And, we think that's an awesome thing. :)
Never read THE BOYS? Let us give the skinny: basically, the superheroes in this world, or CAPES as they're called, are jerks. Big jerks. And, THE BOYS, use their own personal vendettas against these guys to ruin their lives if they decide to get too big for the US Government's comfort.
The series is definitely not for the faint of heart, as it delivers some of the most ultra-violent, over-the-top superhero storytelling we've ever seen. But, beneath the shock value, there is a compelling, and well-thought out plot that runs through the series, and just like many of his other works, Ennis manages to craft a tale where there's some of the most believable, and heartfelt character moments you'll find in any comic.
If you've never read the series, I recommend snagging the first volume of it in trade paperback this week, and giving it a shot.

WHO IS NEWCOMER ARMY RANGER MARCUS JOHNSON, AND HOW COULD HE TEAR THE MARVEL UNIVERSE APART? FIND OUT THIS WEDNESDAY IN BATTLE SCARS #1
Here's an enigmatic one that we took a look at this week, and thought was pretty kick-ass.
In the aftermath of FEAR ITSELF, an unknown army ranger by the name of Marcus Johnson, who may be one of the most important assets to S.H.I.E.L.D that's been discovered in quite some time.
Marvel's been tight lipped about this one, but what we can tell you is that Fraction is handling the writing chores, and... from what we read, the first issue of this one was pretty kick-ass.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #4 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY CONTINUING THE KICK-ASS ADVENTURES OF THE NEW SPIDER-MAN
One of my favorite new launches of 2011 has been the new direction of the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, and the best of these titles has been Bendis's new ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN.
We haven't seen the kind of energy and excitement coming out of Bendis on a title like this since the early days of the original ULTIMATE SPIDEY run, and we're totally stoked with how good of a job he's doing with the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales.
It really does feel like they're not just recapturing the magic of the early Ultimate line-up, but also the magic of the original Lee/Ditko Spidey stuff.
Just fantastic writing, with incredible artwork by Sara Pichelli, the new Ultimate Spider-man's a big favorite around the shop now.
Missed 1-3? We've got copies in stock, as well as ULTIMATE FALLOUT #4, which was the debut first appearance issue of Miles as Spider-Man.

DC NEW 52 WAVE 3: SUICIDE SQUAD #3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING OUR FAVORITE TEAM OF ANTI-HERO SOCIOPATHS
Another of our DC NEW 52 favorites ships this week in the pages of SUICIDE SQUAD #3. This series has been rock n roll right from the get go, and we're not just biased because of our huge fandom of HARLEY QUINN. It seriously is one of the most fun reads we're following.
The series manages to take the feel and concept of the classic John Ostrander Suicide Squad stuff and channel it into a high energy, modern successor, as we're given a team of super-villains who, now in the employ of the federal government, must go on missions they know they have very little chance of surviving. Best part? The team roster is kick-ass, and makes for some entertaining reading... the line-up? Harley Quinn, King Shark, El Diablo, Deadshot, and Voltaic. A nice mix of obscure and the not-so-obscure.
Not reading it? Snag issues 1-3 this Wednesday, as we've got 'em all in stock to get you caught up to this week's #3.

OPERATION BROKEN WINGS, 1936 #1 DELIVERS A KILLER NEW LIMITED SERIES IN THE SPIRIT OF TARANTINO'S INGLORIOUS BASTARDS WITH INCREDIBLE ARTWORK BY TREVOR HAIRSINE
We love these kick-ass little mini-series that BOOM! serves up from time to time, and just like last year's 7 PSYCHOPATHS, it looks like we're getting another psychotronic dose of WW 2 madness from BOOM.
From the incredibly talented Trevor Hairsine, comes this epic story that opens up in the dungeons of the German castle Stolditz. A German intelligence officer is tortured by his superiors. They want to know why he has turned against them, and they will do anything to get that information. Imprisoned, he gives up nothing as he seemingly waits for death... or the right time to escape.
This one looks to be a freakin' awesome read, and I'd recommend checking it out this Wednesday, as Hairsine is a super-talented artist and the preview pages have looked great on this.

STAR WARS: DARTH VADER & THE LOST COMMAND ARRIVES IN GRAPHIC NOVEL FORMAT THIS WEDNESDAY
You know, there's just some things that never lose their coolness, and one of those is DARTH VADER. The character, no matter what craziness Lucas may do in future installments of the films, or official canon, never loses his cool factor.
And, I gotta tell you, this limited series that hit last year in the pages of STAR WARS: DARTH VADER AND THE LOST COMMAND, was a HUGE hit with us and many of you as well.
Set in between the events of REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE, we're shown a very fascinating window into one of the vastly under-explored areas of Star Wars history. And, as a big fan of stuff that's centered around the original Trilogy, I totally love this one.
Still haunted by the death of Padme, Darth Vader is tasked with a mission to locate a lost Imperial expeditionary force -- led by the son of Vader's rising nemesis, Moff Tarkin. But the perils of Vader's journey into the unexplored Ghost Nebula are compounded by traitors among his crew and the presence of the system's religious leader, Lady Saro.

UNCANNY X-FORCE #17 *DARK ANGEL SAGA PT 7*  - THE DARK ANGEL SAGA CONTINUES IN WHAT IS OUR FAVORITE MARVEL TITLE MONTH AFTER MONTH
Month after month, heck, I think since the launch of the book, I've written up every new issue of it in this newsletter... and that's 17 issues... and if that doesn't tell you how much we love UNCANNY X-FORCE, then I don't know what will. :)
This Marvel series continues to be one of our biggest favorites as Remender just gets better, and better with each, and every issue.
And, the current arc, the DARK ANGEL SAGA, is comic book storytelling at it's finest. With UNCANNY X-FORCE, Remender has been building a story since issue #1, weaving plot points in and out, and creating a rich tapestry to play with as he's doing now.
He literally takes EVERYTHING you loved about X-Men when you were a kid, shows you why it was cool, and then proceeds to make it even cooler. Whether it's the SHADOW KING, the AGE OF APOCALYPSE, or fan-favorites like Deadpool, Psylocke, or Arch-Angel.. Remender kills it on each and every issue.
Wanna start from the very beginning? Snag the first UNCANNY X-FORCE trade paperback, with UNCANNY X-FORCE: THE APOCALYPSE SOLUTION tpb (in stock now). Wanna hop onto the DARK ANGEL SAGA? We've got issues 11-16 in stock to catch you up to this week's #17.

DC NEW 52 LIMITED SERIES: THE PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE #2 - A DARK, DISTURBING TAKE ON ONE OF BATMAN'S OLDEST ROGUES
One of the most kick-ass surprises from the DC NEW 52 have been some of the new limited series they've been putting out. PENGUIN PAIN AND PREJUDICE may be my favorite of the bunch so far.
The first issue of this one by crime novelist Gregg Hurwitz and rising star artist Szymon Kudranski (SPAWN, REPULSE) was one of the darkest things we've read in some time, as it shows us a dark examination of the Penguin, and shows us just how threatening this often underrated Batman villain can be.
With rare insights into the Penguin's childhood, his upbringing, and the way that he runs his vast crime empire that's always one step away from faltering due to the interference of Batman, we're shown a very interesting look at how the Penguin manages to skate on such thin ice.
And, the dark secrets that surround the Cobblepot family, and Gotham as a whole continue to be revealed.

P.C. Cast's HOUSE OF NIGHT #1 DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY FROM DARK HORSE COMICS WITH THE FIRST ISSUE ONLY $1.00!
Dark Horse has been really putting out some exciting new stuff, and this week's HOUSE OF NIGHT #1 is another fresh debut for the low trial price of only $1.
The story which reads like a mix of Joss Whedon's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and THE X-MEN, tells the story of Zoey Redbird, an average high school student worrying about grades, boys, and breakouts. But priorities have a way of changing when you are marked as a vampyre, enroll in the vampyre academy House of Night, and have to figure out a whole new social hierarchy, affinities for elemental magic, and physiological changes that make you crave blood.

GARTH ENNIS'S FINAL INSTALLMENT OF CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD: THE LAST BATTLE TPB FROM AVATAR PRESS (CROSSED, NEONOMICON)
You guys know we're huge Garth Ennis fans, right? And, if you're also a big fan of stuff like CROSSED, THE BOYS, or PREACHER, then you need to get into his most recent masterpiece of all that is off-the-hook and out there... CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD.
The final chapter in this trilogy arrives this Wednesday with the CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE TPB, in which the reluctant harbinger of the Apocalypse, Danny Wormwood, must put an end to the evil machinations of the Anti-Pope Jacko.
What is CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD? Chronicles of Wormwood is the tale of Danny Wormwood, who just so happens to be the Anti-Christ. But, Danny, has no desire to end the world, and is just trying to be a normal guy... so, instead, he's content to run a successful cable television station, and have a pint at his favorite bar.
Of course, his dad, the Devil, isn't cool with this, and that's where all hell breaks loose. No pun intended.
It's that perfect mix of Ennis's dark sense of humor, and strong storytelling skill that makes Wormwood so awesome, and if you're not already reading it, we recommend snagging the first volume this Wednesday, and giving it a go.

DC NEW 52 WAVE 3: BATMAN & ROBIN #3 DELIVERS THE THIRD ISSUE IN TOMASI & GLEASON'S KILLER NEW BATMAN AND ROBIN RUN
Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason provide some of THE best BATMAN AND ROBIN storytelling we've seen since the original launch of the series under Morrison and Quitely. And, man, has Gleason gotten awesome or what? We've always dug his art, but he just gets better and better.
This title is focused on the dynamic of Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian (now Robin), working together (sometimes unsuccessfully so), and it's a fantastic read. We love the way the two characters play off one another ,and Tomasi manages to blend strong character development with loads of action-packed pacing to make for one satisfying read.
Missed 1 & 2? We've got copies of each in stock to catch you up to this week's #3.

MAGNETO: NOT A HERO #1 *X-MEN REGENESIS* - MAGNETO NOT A HERO TELLS A TALE OF MAGNETO RETURNING TO HIS VILLAINOUS ROOTS IN THIS "BLUE TEAM" TIE-IN TO REGENESIS
The wild card in Cyclops's new X-TINCTION TEAM (aka BLUE TEAM) is, of course, Magneto. And, in this new 4-issue limited series, we see how Magneto has gone rogue, and now, everyone is wondering... has Magneto broken ranks with the X-Men?
And, if so, what other skeletons are hiding in his closet? How will this affect the public perception of Scott's BLUE TEAM, and their attempt to be a big, bold super-powered team of militant crusaders? Is this part of Cyclops's doing?
We're stoked on just about everything Regenesis right now, and totally stoked to see where this one is heading.

DC NEW 52 WAVE 3: DEMON KNIGHTS #3 - ONE OF OUR FAVORITE SLEEPER HITS OF THE NEW 52 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY
DEMON KNIGHTS is really turning out to be another big favorite for us from the NEW 52, and we know it's been amassing a pretty big cult following amongst many of you guys.
DEMON KNIGHTS is a killer, often-bloody, and definitely dark tale which is set in Gotham City, but during the DARK AGES.
Featuring many characters that would've existed in the Dark Ages period of the DCU, Demon Knights gives us a wickedly dark read that blends GAME OF THRONES and the DC UNIVERSE into one awesome read, featuring characters like Etrigan, Shining Knight, Madame Xanadu, and others.
We love the book, and if you're not on board, snag issues 1 & 2 (both in stock now) and catch up to this week's #3.

The aftermath of FEAR ITSELF continues to be explored in these epilogue issues which set the stage of things to come for the Marvel U, while exploring the immediate after effects of FEAR ITSELF.
This one, in particular, is VERY good, featuring story by Matt Fraction, and with artwork by the very talented Adam Kubert. We're shown just how things have gone in regards to the passing of Thor, as well as the mysterious replacement that is on the way for him.

STAFF PICKS
STEVE: HEART #1 I really enjoyed this one, folks. Blair's writing really is sharp, and keeps the pace of the book flowing very smoothly. Mellon's art is raw and visceral, and makes the action leap off the page. Highly recommended.
TRISH: OUR LOVE IS REAL - Love CHEW? You need to read this book. Totally ridiculous, totally awesome, and it even has a feel good ending.
TORMA: UNCANNY X-MEN #1 - The Return of MR. SINISTER is awesome. I mean, how many bad guys can rock a top hat and cane like this guy? Seriously, a great read.
TONY : BATMAN NOEL HC -  Even more intense than the JOKER graphic novel he did, I really dug this one, and rank it up there as one of the better BATMAN graphic novels I've read.
