THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 11/23/11

FANTASTIC FOUR #600 - THE CULMINATION OF HICKMAN'S EPIC FANTASTIC FOUR & FF RUNS HAPPENS HERE, WHILE ALSO SETTING UP SEVERAL MAJOR MARVEL UNIVERSE STORYLINES. A LANDMARK MUST-READ ISSUE!

We have been completely hooked on the awesomeness that is Hickman's FANTASTIC FOUR run. It's rare that you see a writer go into a book these days with such a long-term plan, but Hickman has just done that, beginning nearly 3 years ago with FANTASTIC FOUR #570, and blazing a trail that will leave it's mark on the Marvel Universe for years to come.

Now, this Wednesday, we reach the peak of Hickman's incredible run on both FANTASTIC FOUR and FF, as he brings everything to a head in the landmark issue of FANTASTIC FOUR #600.

Yes, this issue not only marks the return of FANTASTIC FOUR as a monthly title, but it also serves as an excellent jumping on point for anyone who's been itching to find out why we're so high on Hickman's FF work.

With this renewed direction, FF #600 marks a return to the team's iconic status of being a foursome of iconic explorers and adventurers in the Marvel Universe, while the FUTURE FOUNDATION series continues to explore the roles of the Foundation members that are not part of the core 4. Both series are being written by the one, and only Jonathan Hickman.

Folks, I gotta tell you, Hickman is one of my favorite writers to come around the bend in a long time. His work on stories like PAX ROMANA, THE RED WING, NIGHTLY NEWS, and of course, FANTASTIC FOUR / FF, has been some of the most epic, and interesting storytelling in comics in the last 5 years. But, I think it's his work on FF that has me the most impressed, as the Fantastic Four was a comic I had never really been that excited about previously.

I mean, sure, the John Byrne run was rad, and you can't touch the Kirby/Lee stuff in terms of pure Marvel pop art madness.. but Hickman was the first writer that really made these characters and their world click for me, and for that, I'm a bit partial to his FF stuff.

Hickman took a cast of characters that had been taken about as far as they could go, and then took them lightyears beyond that point. With each issue of FF, Hickman reminds us WHY the Fantastic Four are cool with epic stories that range the gamut from sci-fi space opera to lost world exploration to strong character development to good old fashioned superhero awesomeness.

And, now, EVERYTHING, comes to it's head in FF #600 this Wednesday. If it's something even remotely related to the Fantastic Four, you can bet it rears it's head in this over-sized special issue. Whether we're talking the Galactus Seed from Fraction's MIGHTY THOR run, or elements originally put into place during Abnett and Lannings  ANNIHILATION / WAR OF KINGS, ect stuff... and of course, all the big ideas Hickman has been tossing our way for many issues.. it all happens here.

I could rant, and I could rave for like 6 pages about this series, but all I can say is this: if you're not reading Hickman's FF, pick up FANTASTIC FOUR #600 this Wednesday, and give it a shot. You'll be very glad you did.

BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR GRAPHIC NOVEL DELIVERS ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC BATMAN STORIES WE'VE READ IN YEARS. RANKS UP THERE WITH "BATMAN YEAR ONE", "HUSH", and "DARK KNIGHT RETURNS"

Folks, this is it. Those BEST OF lists that pop up whenever a new Chris Nolan BATMAN film hits are about to change a little, 'cause SCOTT SNYDER's amazing BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR is going to be climbing it's way right up to one of the top spots.

This is seriously the best Batman story arc I have read in nearly 5 years. Seriously. It's THAT good. I know that many of you followed this one as avidly as I did during it's run in DETECTIVE COMICS, but, I also know that at the time, the buzz around it hadn't quite reached everyone yet.

So, if you overlooked this story when it was coming out monthly: do yourselves a favor and snag it now, 'cause you'll be glad you did.

BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR is the kind of timeless Batman story that brings that dark, iconic feel to the Caped Crusader like past examples in LONG HALLOWEEN, DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, YEAR ONE, and more.

Scott Snyder, the writer of fan-favorites like AMERICAN VAMPIRE, SWAMP THING, and of course, most recently: BATMAN with Greg Capullo (how awesome has that storyline been!?) was given the ball shortly after Bruce Wayne went MIA, and he ran with it, telling the BEST of the Dick Grayson as Batman stories in this epic 300-page arc that brought a whole new layer to the relationship between Batman, Dick Grayson, and Commissioner Gordon.

Aside from Snyder's talented writing, the artwork on this is amazing, as both Jock (the Losers) and Francesco Francavilla (the most recent Black Panther series) bring their A+ game, and hit a true home run, loading the story with tons of dark, noir atmosphere, and a pulpy sensibility that compliments Snyder's plot perfectly.

So, what's it all about? The Black Mirror is a tale of brutal murders that brings one of the most horrifying evils of Gotham face to face with Batman. I don't want to reveal too much about the plot... but, it's a murder mystery that harkens back to many elements that Frank Miller laid out in BATMAN YEAR ONE. The tone is very reminiscent of YEAR ONE, and there's a very macabre noir feel to the entire storyline.

All I can say is that this is one of the BEST Batman reads I've seen in a very long time, and just trust me: you'll be glad you went into this without any of the surprises being spoiled.

KICK-ASS 2 #5 - DEATH BY COSPLAY! Mark Millar and John ROMITA JR return this Wednesday with their ultra-violent real world take on costumed heroes and villains!
Still, after all this time, Millar and Romita still got the magic when it comes to KICK-ASS, 'cause this issue was every bit as good as the ones before it. Seriously, I've never emphatically felt more that a comic book was worth the wait than KICK-ASS. Each and every issue of this one is a fun, addictive read that leaves us on the edge of our seats.

If you're not familiar with KICK-ASS, here's a brief rundown. KICK-ASS, as many of you know, inspired a film, and while the film wasn't half bad, the comic books are so much better. There's a very interesting, nihilistic kind of undertone that runs through each series, and the comics are just much more darker, and layered than the film. HOWEVER, if you dug the film: you'll love the comics even more. Just imagine all the places they couldn't go in the film, and that's how it plays out in the comics.

Now, what IS KICK-ASS? KICK-ASS is the story of a young teenager who decides one day to become the world's first costumed crime fighter. He buys a wetsuit on eBay, makes a costume, goes out, tries to stop a crime, and ends up getting beat so badly he's hospitalized. He comes out of the hospital... swears he's never going to do it again, and ends up finding himself back in the suit, on the street looking for trouble. Except, this time, he manages to get the upper hand, somehow, and gets caught on cell phone cameras... pretty soon KICK-ASS is a viral internet sensation, and from there.. everything changes.

Now, in the world of KICK-ASS 2, which picks up immediately after the first series, costumed heroes have taken inspiration and began forming throughout the world. And, along with them, so have costumed villains. Of course, there's some very violent takes on what kind of psychopaths would go out in costume... and that's what makes KICK-ASS such a fun read.

The second series has had us every bit as hooked as the first, and folks, if you're not reading it.. we highly recommend giving it a go.

HOW TO CATCH UP? Start with the KICK-ASS trade paperback, which collects the entire first series. In stock now at Third Eye Comics. And, then from there, go to the individual issues of KICK-ASS 2, we have 1-4 in stock now to catch you up to this week's #5.

DIABLO #1 - DC COMICS AND BLIZZARD GAMES TEAM UP TO DELIVER ALL NEW STORIES FROM THE WORLD OF SANCTUARY

We're big fans of Blizzard, and of course, big fans of Diablo here at Third Eye. This is why we are totally stoked about the brand new Diablo limited series which delivers BRAND NEW content and stories from the game setting of DIABLO.

The storyline starts out with a young hero named Jacob, who has fled from his homeland in the north, hunted by his kinsmen for the crime of murder. Led by the visions of an ancient prophet, pursued by his childhood friend, Jacob finds his destiny in a desert cave at the foot of a mountain carved in two by the sword of an archangel - Tyrael. But will Jacob be able to claim the sword that could save his people, if not the world, before he's brought to "justice"?

If you're a DIABLO fan, this one's a use, and it looks incredible.

27: SECOND SET #3 - IMAGE COMICS'S MASH-UP OF ROCK N ROLL LORE, THE OCCULT, AND WEIRD SCIENCE IS A MUST-READ

We've been really digging 27 from IMAGE, and this second series is even better than the first, as it does a fantastic job of using the arch-types and standards of popular music to weave a story of faustian deals, occult science, and more. Awesome, awesome stuff.

In this week's 27 SECOND SET #3, we meet 1980s one-hit wonder turned witch Valerie Hayes, and her quest to magically steal William Garland's immense fame.

This one is loaded with homages to rock-n-roll's greatest one-hit wonders, and I got a huge kick out of it.

What is 27? 27 is the story of rock-n-roll's dark and mysterious '27 Club', a group of musicians who have all died at the young age of 27. And, it focuses on a young musician by the name of Will Garland who makes a very faustian deal to continue playing guitar and not lose his ability due to a neurological disorder. Loaded with weird science, and creepy atmosphere.. plus, loads of very famous guests... 27 is IMAGE awesomeness at it's finest.

How To Catch Up? Snag the first 27: FIRST SET trade paperback, that collects the entire first series (in stock now at Third Eye comics), and then jump on with issues 1-3 of SECOND SET this Wednesday, we've got 'em all in stock.

UNCANNY X-FORCE: THE DARK ANGEL SAGA HITS GRAPHIC NOVEL THIS WEDNESDAY - THE BEST MARVEL TITLE WE'RE READING. STILL! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND SNAG THIS ONE!

Folks, you've been hearing us rant and rave about how much we dig Rick Remender on UNCANNY X-FORCE for almost a year straight now, and I gotta tell you: if you haven't yet started reading this series, now is the perfect opportunity, 'cause UNCANNY X-FORCE: THE DARK ANGEL SAGA is the highest point of the series thus far, and is a great spot to jump aboard.

Why is this series so good? It literally takes EVERYTHING you love about the Marvel Universe and the X-Men especially, and distills it down into one slick, post-modern slice of awesomeness with breakneck pacing, believable dialogue, and plots that're razor-sharp, and tight all the way through.

Remender has taken an approach to comics storytelling that's more akin to classic stories like the DARK PHOENIX SAGA, X-CUTIONERS SONG, and more.. in that he's seeded all of his story arcs with little references, and tidbits, to lead up to his magnum opus, which is the current DARK ANGEL SAGA.

And, what is the DARK ANGEL SAGA? Well, at the very beginning of UNCANNY X-FORCE (we have the first volume available now in trade paperback to catch you up, and then all the subsequent issues are also in stock too), the team is assembled to kill Apocalypse.

Problem is: Apocalypse is reborn in the body of a child. The X-Men aren't too keen on that. So, a covert team is put into place, and from there... Apocalypse gets killed. And, guess who's the next in line to fill his role? Yup, that's right, DEATH.. aka Arch-Angel. And, that's what the DARK ANGEL SAGA is all about. We're watching as Arch-Angel makes the transition into an evil version of himself that very much resembles Apocalypse.

So, his team-mates on X-Force, can only do one thing: travel to the AGE OF APOCALYPSE (remember that place? we do!), and find a cure for Warren.

From there, awesomeness ensues, and we cannot stress how good a read this is. From the story to the art, it's top notch.

Wanna get caught up? We recommend either jumping on fresh with this week's DARK ANGEL SAGA hardcover, or if you want to go all the way back, you can grab the first trade paperback: UNCANNY X-FORCE THE APOCALYPSE SOLUTION, and then catch up on the back issues from there, as we have them all in stock.

Either way, DO IT. You will be stoked you did.

AQUAMAN #3 - ONE OF THE TOP DC NEW 52 TITLES HITS THIS WEDNESDAY WITH GEOFF JOHNS'S THIRD INSTALLMENT OF AQUAMAN
Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis are really delivering the goods on the new AQUAMAN ongoing series. I mean, I never thought in a million years I'd be saying that AQUAMAN is one of the flagship titles for DC.. but, dammit: IT IS.

Seriously, this book is good. The writing is amazing, the artwork is top notch, I mean, it's the same creative team that brought you BLACKEST NIGHT.. so how can it NOT be great?

The thing that's most clever about AQUAMAN is how Johns is able to basically take everything you know about the character, twist it around, make it cool, and then disprove any and all doubts you ever had about Aquaman not being a bad-ass.

From the very first issue, we're shown a DCU that doesn't quite take the Prince of the Seas seriously, and in a few humorous moments, we're shown the kind of disrespect that Aquaman finds himself at the receiving end of.

However, in issue #2: everything gears up, and that's where you start seeing Aquaman showing just how powerful a character he is.

All in all, this one's a big favorite, and folks, if you're looking for another one of the DC NEW 52 to try, we cannot recommend this one enough. It's one of my top 3 favorites in the entire line-up.

Missed 1 & 2? We've got copies in stock to catch you up.

LOCKE & KEY: GUIDE TO KNOWN KEYS ONE-SHOT THIS WEDNESDAY PROVIDES A KILLER STAND-ALONE STORY IN THE LOCKE & KEY WORLD. A MUST FOR THOSE OF YOU READING THE SERIES IN TRADE AS WELL

We're HUGE fans of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodgriguez's masterful LOCKE & KEY series, and pretty much ANYTHING that comes out of that storyline.. we're stoked for.

So, when we saw this nifty little one-shot coming down the pike which literally serves as a guide to all of the known keys, as well as the failed keys, and the stories that surround them, we had to give it a shout out.

Even if you're reading the series exclusively in trade, you should snag this, 'cause we're not too sure this one will end up being collected in the future or not.

Do you read LOCKE & KEY? If not, here's the skinny on why we're so into this series, which is turning out to be one of the BEST supernatural fantasy comics we've read since THE SANDMAN. Seriously.

Locke & Key begins with the story of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them, and the home of a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all, and from there, the lore surrounding Keyhouse, it's inhabitants, and it's history are expanded upon.

It starts off as a chilling ghost story, and the strong character development draws you in, but by the time you get a couple of trades in, you realize there's a very layered, very compelling dark fantasy story here.. and folks, we love it.

How to Catch Up? Start with the LOCKE & KEY WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT vol.1 trade paperback which will get you started, and then catch up via the trades from there. We've got all of 'em in stock, and keep them in stock.

THE ORIGINAL TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES SERIES FINALLY GETS COLLECTED IN THIS WEEK'S TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ULTIMATE COLLECTION VOL.1 HARDCOVER

Man, there's some really great graphic novels coming out this week! This Wednesday marks the highly anticipated release of IDW's first TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ULTIMATE COLLECTION, which is a mammoth slab of Turtles goodness.

Reprinting the original, dark, and pretty darn violent underground comix of the Ninja Turtles from Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, this book gives you 300 pages of the first 7 issues of the Turtles, along with the very cool Raphael one-shot that Eastman and Laird did.

A must-buy, make sure you snag yourself a copy this Wednesday.

WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN #2 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING THE SECOND ISSUE TO THE BEST NEW X-MEN TITLE WE'VE READ SINCE UNCANNY X-FORCE. :)
GOLD TEAM IN FULL EFFECT

Man, we really loved the first issue of the new WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN series that's acting as the flagship title of the GOLD TEAM X-Men books coming out. Jason Aaron really nails it on this one, bringing a nice touch of humor, and big, bold X-Men awesomeness to the book that really makes it stand out.

This is what it felt like to read X-Men back as a teenager in the '90s. It reminds me a lot of some of my favorite runs, like the Joe Mad on UNCANNY era, and the Joe Kelly / Steve Seagle runs, which I always thought were really underrated.

In the aftermath of SCHISM, the X-MEN have split into two different teams. Wolverine has taken many of the younger students, and assembled his gold team. He's renamed the Xavier Institute to the Jean Grey Institute of Higher Learning, and he's now the headmaster of the school, training these kids how to be X-Men.

And, folks, it's the coolest evolution of the character we've ever seen. I really can't think of a time where Wolverine's character has shown such a natural progression. It's perfect.

There's also a nice sense of humor to the book, it's not over-the-top slapstick, but it's just enough to make the tone of the book unique, and compelling.

We really dug the first issue, and are so stoked to read #2 this Wednesday.

Missed #1? We've got copies in stock to a catch you up, as well as the X-MEN REGENESIS one-shot which sets up both the Blue Team and the Gold Team.

I, VAMPIRE #3 - "ECHOES" writer JOSHUA HALE FIALKOV IS BRINGING PURE HORROR AWESOMENESS WITH THIS DC NEW 52 TITLE
Fialkov is a writer that's really been catching our eye here at Third Eye. You want some straight up talent, especially when it comes to telling tales of horror or other dark subject matter? He's got it.

His series, ECHOES, really blew us away last year, with it's dark depiction of a man with mental illness and the discovery that his father was a serial murderer, and now he's wowing us on I, VAMPIRE.

And, we cannot forget to mention the amazing artwork of Andrea Sorrentino, which conjures up a very Jae Lee-esque feel to the story that Fialkov is telling here.

This brutal horror title, set as one of DC's NEW 52, tells the tale of two vampires... one who refuses to feast on humans, and hunts his own kind, and the other, who has a burning desire to wage a bloody war on Earth... including all of it's superheroes.

The book is a great horror comic, and if you're enjoying the kind of horror/superhero mash-up of titles like ANIMAL MAN or SWAMP THING, you really should be reading this series.

There's nothing TWILIGHT about I, VAMPIRE either, Third Eye Faithful. This is a straight-up At War With Humanity take on vampires, with one lone individual caught between the two.

Missed 1 & 2? We've got copies of each in stock to catch you up.

MILK & CHEESE: DAIRY PRODUCTS GONE BAD HC HITS THIS WEDNESDAY COLLECTING EVERY MILK AND CHEESE COMIC EVER MADE.. A LONG-TIME PERSONAL FAVORITE OF THIRD EYE STEVE
I frickin' love MILK AND CHEESE. Seriously. Heck, I love Evan Dorkin on pretty much anything. DORK and MILK & CHEESE were two of my favorite reads as a kid, and I remember hunting all over to find random issues of both series. Heck, I still remember the awesome feeling of reading MILK & CHEESE after having to figure a way to get my comic shop guy to sell it to 12 year old me. Yeah, Milk and Cheese has some pretty bad language in it.. so, getting it when you're a youngun was tough.

Folks, if you're a big fan of indie comix, whether it's stuff like Johnny Ryan, or even the humor seen in something like Image Comics's Lil Depressed Boy or Jhonen Vasquez's JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC, you should totally pick up a copy of MILK AND CHEESE this week.

PLUS: It's literally EVERY MILK AND CHEESE comic ever, reprinted here, and that's nearly 300 pages of comic goodness for only $20. How awesome is that?

What is MILK AND CHEESE? Folks, it's quite simply: a wedge of spite, a carton of hate.. two rage-filled dairy products that literally beat the hell out of everything, make fun of anything, and run rampant on comic books in a big way.

We love it. And, we think you will too.

ROBERT KIRKMAN'S (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE) SUPER DINOSAUR ARRIVES IN TRADE PAPERBACK THIS WEDNESDAY WITH SUPER DINOSAUR VOL.1

We're HUGE fans of Robert Kirkman here at Third Eye, and the countless works of comic book goodness he's bestowed upon us. Whether it's his harrowing survival horror blockbuster THE WALKING DEAD, or his addictive, and compelling superhero saga INVINCIBLE... Kirkman delivers every time.

And, his newest series, SUPER DINOSAUR, is a fantastic new read that's totally cool for all ages. The concept may sound a bit out there, but c'mon, so did ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN, right? :) And, we loved that too.

In SUPER DINOSAUR, the evil Max Maximus wants to get to Inner-Earth. He wants the dinosaurs that live there. He wants the powerful DynOre mineral that originates there. But, one kid and his best friend, a T-Rex in a mech-suit with rocket launchers.. well, they're not gonna let him make that happen.

Plus: there's nothing quite as awesome as seeing a giant T-Rex trying to play X-BOX with his tiny little T-REX arms.

This one has the first 5 issues, plus the ORIGIN issue one-shot, all for only $9.99.

A must-read, snag yourself a copy this Wednesday, or maybe grab one for your son, daughter, niece or nephew, and turn 'em onto comics.

THE NEW GOD OF THUNDER DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY IN MIGHTY THOR #8.. MEET TANARUS

Matt Fraction brings the debut of a brand new Marvel character that we're pretty stoked to get the scoop on this Wednesday with MIGHTY THOR #8. As many of you know, FEAR ITSELF #7 concluded with Thor getting killed. Yup. The God of Thunder is dead.. but... there's a void that needs to be filled, and that's where Tanarus comes into play.

I'll be honest, I don't have a whole lot of insight into who Tanarus is, but I'm very intrigued to find out. Fraction's a talented writer, and his run on MIGHTY THOR has been top notch from beginning to finish, so I'm expecting some very exciting things with this new direction for the series.

TEEN TITANS #3 - ANOTHER OF OUR FAVORITE DC NEW 52 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY, WITH THE DEBUT OF NEW TITAN: BUNKER

So much cool stuff to be stoked for in the DC NEW 52, and TEEN TITANS is one of the ones we're really digging. The combination of Lobdell bringing a fresh, new take to the team, and Brett Booth bringing his amazing pencils to the title really has us hooked, and we can't wait to read this week's #3.

This week marks the debut of a brand new Titan with Bunker, and judging from how much we've dug the first two issues, we can't wait to see where Lobdell is taking the story next.

Missed #1 & #2? We've got copies of both in stock now to catch you up.

FRANCIS MANAPUL IS DELIVERING PURE COMIC GOLD WITH THE FLASH, AS THE FLASH #3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY. ANOTHER THIRD EYE FAVORITE AMONG THE NEW 52

We were big fans of Manapul's incredible artwork on THE FLASH with GEOFF JOHNS, and we're even more impressed with it now that Manapul has taken over writing duties as well as part of the DC NEW 52.

Manapul brings the series practically off the page at you, and while it's hard to put our finger on the hook of the book, we gotta tell you: it looks great, reads great, and we can't get enough.

Need 1 & 2 ? We've got copies of each in stock to catch you up this week to #3.

DAVID FINCH CONTINUES HIS JAW-DROPPINGLY AWESOME BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT THIS WEDNESDAY WITH BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #3

It's so hard to pick a favorite amongst the BATMAN titles right now, because they're all so freakin' great. Each one has it's own feel, and identity, and DARK KNIGHT is most definitely the A+ in the art category book.

David Finch, quite possibly one of the most talented artists working in comics right now, is delivering a killer, ass-kicker of a read with BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, as loads of classic Bat-rogues are rushing into the streets with a mysterious toxin flooding their bodies.

And, at the end of the trail for this mystery? The White Rabbit.

Awesome, awesome stuff. Missed out on 1 & 2? We've got copies in stock to catch you up this week.

SUPERMAN #3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING THE THIRD BLOCKBUSTER ISSUE IN THE DC NEW 52'S FLAGSHIP SUPERMAN TITLE

When you've got George Perez working on Superman.. it's kind of a big deal, ya know? :) And, that's why we're loving the flagship SUPERMAN title so much right now.

Superman finds himself beset as a TV reporter at the new Daily Planet makes a case that Superman brings Metropolis more harm than good, and meanwhile... a vicious new foe is attacking everything that is near and dear to Kent.

As the flagship SUPERMAN title of the NEW 52, this book takes place in the present, while exploring the slight tweaks to the character (new uniform, ect). Very cool stuff.
