THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS FOR WEDNESDAY 1/4/12

FATALE #1 - A SHOCKING, VISCERAL BLEND OF LOVECRAFTIAN HORROR AND PITCH PERFECT CRIME NOIR STORYTELLING FROM THE CREATORS OF “INCOGNITO” & “CRIMINAL”, DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY FROM IMAGE COMICS!
I have been totally pumped for this series since we first saw the announcements of it. I’m a huge fan of the work that Brubaker and Phillips have done on both CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO, and when I saw they were venturing into the horror genre…. I just about flipped.
Seriously, this book is KICK-ASS. I was lucky enough to read the first issue a few weeks ago, and it floored me with how great this is. Even if you’re not big on the crime noir genre, or the horror genre, we feel that you’ll love this, as the two genres mix together to make something truly unique, and compelling. Plus: it’s a great example of just plain awesome comic goodness, Third Eye Faithful.
What is FATALE about? Imagine if Alan Moore’s NEONOMICON, Mike Mignola’s HELLBOY, film noir like A TOUCH OF EVIL, and ROSEMARY’S BABY found themselves tossed into a blender… out would come the dark, street-wise horror of FATALE.
The story begins with a reporter in present-day 2012 who stumbles upon a secret that leads him down the darkest path imaginable to a seductive woman who’s been on the run since 1935, a mobster who may be an immortal demonic entity, and the stories of all the doomed men who’ve been caught in their decades-long struggle. A riveting blend of crime noir, and horror that looks to be the most promising entry into the horror comics genre since LOCKE & KEY and CROSSED debuted.
Now, aside from the fact that this is an incredible concept, steeped in crime noir atmosphere, and HP Lovecraft-style other dimensional demons and tentacled horrors… lets talk about the other reason why we’re pumped for FATALE: it’s the newest project from Brubaker and Phillips. When these two guys get together, they deliver some of the best work on the stands, and their comics ALWAYS deliver the kind of satisfying read that gives you the most bang for your buck. From cover to cover, pure story and content all the way through, and they even include back matter in the comics that does not appear in the trade paperbacks of their work, where various writers, musicians, film-makers, and more do guest essays about their favorite aspects of various genre fiction.
All in all: FATALE gets our vote as book of the week this week, and heck, will be a strong contestant for one of the Best Series of 2012, we’re telling ya right now.
Snag a copy this Wednesday, and find out why we’re so jazzed on this one!

AVENGERS: X-SANCTION #2 - THE FOLLOW-UP ISSUE TO THE SMASH HIT MARVEL LIMITED PRELUDE SERIES TO AVENGERS VS. X-MEN CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY – FROM THE CREATORS OF BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN, BATMAN: HUSH, SUPERMAN/BATMAN AND MORE!
Man, did the first issue of X-SANCTION kick ass, or what? This is definitely a return to glory for Jeph Loeb, as he’s channeling his days on LONG HALLOWEEN, DARK VICTORY, BATMAN HUSH and more with this one, bringing us a kick-ass, in-your-face, action-packed Marvel blockbuster that wastes no time getting into the thick of things, and setting things off.
As the crucial prelude storyline to the highly anticipated AVENGERS VS. X-MEN crossover that debuts this Spring, X-SANCTION is the first shots fired in what is sure to be a stage-setting war between the two biggest super-teams in the Marvel U.

The first issue of this one was a freakin’ great read, as it showed us a perfect mix of killer character development, and in-your-face action, as Cable returns from the future, with only 24 hours to live before the Legacy virus consumes him… and his mission? Kill the AVENGERS.
Now, the question is: Why is Cable trying to kill the AVENGERS? Well, we’re thinking it may have something to do with the much-rumored return of the PHOENIX in this year’s upcoming AVENGERS VS. X-MEN arc… and the Phoenix’s connection to Hope that’s been hinted at. That’d make sense, right? :) We’ll see.
Anyways, after a kick-ass first issue, X-SANCTION continues this Wednesday with X-SANCTION #2, and we’re totally pumped.
For those of you who missed X-SANCTION #1, we have issue #1 still available, including the THIRD EYE COMICS variant with us on the cover! So, snag yourself a copy this week and get caught up!

ACTION COMICS #5 - GRANT MORRISON REDEFINES THE ORIGINS OF SUPERMAN IN THE DC NEW 52! A HISTORICAL MUST-READ ISSUE THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS!
I gotta tell you, Third Eye Faithful… ACTION COMICS is one of THE must-read DC NEW 52 titles on the stands, and I cannot get enough of it. Grant Morrison, who had already wowed us once before with ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, continues to do so with his current run of ACTION COMICS, which is set 10-15 years in the past, and 5 years prior to the current JUSTICE LEAGUE arc, and shows us a young Superman, in his early 20s, just having moved to Metropolis… and ready to save the world.. by any means necessary.
In the first four issues, Morrison has done SO much awesome stuff, from introducing big time Superman bad guys like Metallo (and hinting at Brainiac), to supporting cast like Steel and Jimmy Olsen, to the Bottle City of Kandor… it’s incredible. And, it’s a blast to read. Morrison’s gift for storytelling has never been more apparent, as he brings the same kind of magic he brought to BATMAN AND ROBIN, JLA, and more to Superman. His portrayal of Luthor is especially interesting, and a favorite for us.
Now, moving ahead, Morrison is doing something that is especially huge… he’s retelling, and redefining the origins of SUPERMAN in the DC NEW 52. This is monumental, Third Eye Faithful, for a number of reasons. One of the most exciting aspects of the DC NEW 52 has been the way that it’s rebuilding, and reintroducing the DC UNIVERSE to the 21st century, while not throwing away concepts that came before, but modernizing others… it’s doing an excellent job of making what was old new again, and we’re loving it.
And, nothing, NOTHING, is bigger than the Origin of Superman. Superman was one of the first, and is a big part of the reason why the superhero genre flourished. Literally, the book was a grandfather of the genre, and when you have a master storyteller like Morrison tweaking the origins of a modern day myth like the Man of Steel.. you know you’re in for a treat.
Seriously, if you haven’t started reading ACTION COMICS yet, you really need to get into this one: it’s one of the BEST on the stands, and you’ll love it. Trust us.

FERALS #1 – AVATAR PRESS, THE PUBLISHERS OF NEONOMICON & CROSSED, DELIVER A BRAND NEW HORROR STORY THAT BRINGS SHEER TERROR IN WEREWOLF FORM TO THE PAGE FROM DAVID LAPHAM, WRITER OF “CALIGULA” & “CROSSED”
Man, it’s a great week of books. FERALS is another new one that I’m so pumped to see getting it’s release this week. We’re big fans of AVATAR PRESS here at Third Eye, and we’ve loved the other horror stuff they’ve done like CROSSED and NEONOMICON, so you know we’re totally pumped for the arrival of their take on the werewolf genre with FERALS this Wednesday.
From David Lapham, the twisted mind behind the revolting CALIGULA, and stomach-turning CROSSED comics, comes FERALS, which brings Lapham back to his Stray Bullets roots in a brutal supernatural crime drama that features the grueling horror of a new type of werewolf.
Officer Dale Chesnutt has a big bloody problem — slaughtered civilians are turning up in the sleepy town of Cypress and now it’s on him to figure out why. But while he’s discovering more carnage, a mysterious woman has appeared in his life… and, the distractions she brings, pulls him away as even more brutal werewolf murders are cropping up.
Totally gory, and totally awesome, FERALS looks to continue Avatar’s incredible tradition of telling strong horror stories, that are packed with as much plot, and character development as they are blood and guts.
If you’re a fan of CROSSED, or NEONOMICON, FERALS is a MUST. Make sure you snag a copy this Wednesday.

THE LONE RANGER RETURNS IN A BRAND NEW SERIES FROM THE FOLKS WHO’VE BROUGHT YOU WARLORD OF MARS, VOLTRON, THE BIONIC MAN AND MORE THIS WEDNESDAY IN THE LONE RANGER #1
Dynamite does an excellent job of reviving classic pulp heroes, and other licensed characters, and bringing a slick, fresh, innovative 21st century spin to them.
And, we are totally pumped about their new LONE RANGER series, which looks fantastic. In the tradition of their other recent pulp hero revivals, like WARLORD OF MARS, and FLASH GORDON, the Lone Ranger returns with an edge, and we love it.
This is the kind of comic that conjures the same kind of dark, gritty Old West that we’ve been seeing in the excellent DC NEW 52 title ALL STAR WESTERN. A place where the law is flexible, and changes as quick as the price on your head. And, now, memories of loss, vengeance and redemption are stirred in the Lone Ranger, as pioneer idealism meets the reality of hard life on the prairie.
A brand new ongoing series, featuring the original vigilante, the new Lone Ranger looks bad-ass!

UNCANNY X-FORCE #19.1- MARVEL’S BEST MONTHLY SERIES ENTERS IT’S NEXT STORY ARC THIS WEDNESDAY IN THIS PERFECT JUMP-ON-POINT OF UNCANNY X-FORCE #19.1
THIS SPECIAL ISSUE RETURNS THE TEAM TO THE AGE OF APOCALYPSE, AND SETS THE STAGE FO THE NEW ONGOING SERIES, AGE OF APOCALYPSE #1
Quite possibly the best monthly Marvel book on the stands, UNCANNY X-FORCE impresses us all over again this Wednesday with the UNCANNY X-FORCE #19.1 issue that serves as a great entry point for the title to those of you who have not been reading it already, and a super satisfying return to form for those of who have.
This issue takes the X-Force back into the Age of Apocalypse, as they decide to make their final stand against WEAPON X. And, along with their arrival, comes the official introduction of the Age of Apocalypse superhero team, the X-Terminated… a team consisting of the human sons and daughters of characters like Bolliver Trask, William Stryker, Cameron Hodge, and more.
This issue also serves as the official prologue for the upcoming AGE OF APOCALYPSE ongoing series, which is looking to be the most kick-ass new thing ever!
Folks: we’ve raved month after month about how great X-Force is, and how it’s not just the best X-Book on the stands, but the BEST Marvel monthly series on the stands.. if you still haven’t jumped on, hop aboard with this week’s UNCANNY X-FORCE #19.1, which is the PERFECT issue to jump on board with.
Rick Remender is really delivering BIG TIME on this series, and we cannot get enough of it.

DETECTIVE COMICS #5 – THE DC NEW 52 DETECTIVE COMICS HAS BEEN FANTASTIC, THE PERFECT BATMAN TITLE FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS AWESOME ART, SOLID STORYTELLING AND A BRUTAL LOOK AT BATMAN’S MOST LEGENDARY VILLAINS
DETECTIVE COMICS has really been an outstanding read since it’s debut, and has really secured itself as one of the top tier flagship DC NEW 52 titles, with it’s combination of rock solid storytelling, incredible artwork, and a just plain cool premise that keeps the book rocking.
I mean, when you end issue #1 with the Joker’s face sliced off, and tacked to a wall… you know you’re in for a wild ride, right?
DETECTIVE COMICS delivers a riveting read that is the kind of BATMAN book that those of you who are totally hooked on ARKHAM CITY will love, as it brings a dark twist to many of Batman’s most legendary Rogues, while at the same time introducing new characters as well.
In issue #5, we learn of a series of assassinations in the criminal underworld that all lead back to the Penguin as the prime suspect. But when seemingly ordinary women become part of the killings, Batman discovers a common denominator that leads him on the trail of a vicious killer who is spiraling down a path of destruction.
More awesome stuff from DETECTIVE COMICS, folks, if you’re not already reading this one, do yourselves a favor, and get caught up this week.

MUDMAN #2 – Image Comics and Paul Grist deliver a KILLER new take on the Superhero Genre with MUDMAN! A total blast to read, we’re loving this one!
IMAGE has really broadened it’s catalog in the last few years, and books like MUDMAN are a great example of some of the fresh, and innovative new things IMAGE is doing.
A plain and simple, but simply awesome new take on the superhero genre, MUDMAN is the kind of book that if you’re a big fan of stuff like INVINCIBLE, then you’ll really dig, as it’s just a rock solid take on the young superhero story that we all know so well.
The first issue was a blast, as we were introduced to a young teenager who finds himself.. well.. turning into mud. And, after wandering into an abandoned building near his home, he finds a strange costume, and Mudman is born.
It sounds pretty straight-forward, but the beauty is in the execution, of how Paul Grist’s stylized art style, and knack for storytelling brings the characters to life.
Plus, the whole mud superpower thing is fun, and a pretty cool take. Imagine if Peter Parker had ended up with the Sandman’s powers instead of the spider-powers, and that sums up MUDMAN pretty well.
Missed issue #1? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up to this week’s #2.

GODZILLA: LEGENDS CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH GODZILLA: LEGENDS #3 FEATURING “STUFF OF LEGEND” writer MIKE RAICHT
We’ve been totally loving the GODZILLA LEGENDS series from IDW which has been a 5-issue limited series of one-shot stories, each focusing on one of the most kick-ass of Godzilla’s classic foes.
And, this one is even cooler, because it’s written by a Third Eye favorite, MIKE RAICHT, writer of THE PACK, and STUFF OF LEGEND. Focusing on TITANOSAURS, more giant kaiju mayhem ensues, and we love it!
Plus, is that cover not the most kick-ass thing you’ve ever seen? :)

DEFENDERS #2 – ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING NEW MARVEL ONGOING SERIES OF THE NEW YEAR CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY
DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS ONE, FOLKS, THIS BOOK IS GREAT!
Damn, DEFENDERS is REALLY good. I mean, this is MATT FRACTION at his finest, we’re talking early INVINCIBLE IRON MAN good, we’re talking THOR AGES OF THUNDER good, we’re talking CASANOVA good… seriously, folks, this book is EPIC, and we’re loving every second of it.
The new DEFENDERS ongoing may be the most promising new Marvel ongoing series we’ve seen launch since UNCANNY X-FORCE’s debut. Much like X-Force, it has it’s own very unique feel, and tone, that makes it stand out amongst many other team books. And, much like X-Force, it’s the kind of title that sneaks up, and surprises everyone with how awesome it is.
And, the artwork is SHARP. The Dodsons freakin’ kill it on here, and make Fraction’s bigger than life, weirder than weird story look amazing, and we’re loving ‘em for it.
The concept of the series is great, as it looks to focus strongly on the behind-the-scenes conspiracies, and connective tissue that run between all of the MAJOR events that go down in the Marvel Universe. In other words, we’re shown a look at what will be leading into everything from the AVENGERS vs. X-MEN to other major arcs.
The team line-up of the DEFENDERS is also a big draw here, as it’s a who’s who of characters that many of you guys, and ourselves, have been wanting to see in a book. From the major focus on Doctor Strange, to the reintroduction of Iron Fist, to the Silver Surfer and Namor to the Red She-Hulk.. the team is a great make-up of fan-favorites, and characters that are really finding their voices here.
In issue #2, we learn that a dangerous secret lies deep within the Marvel Universe, and the only ones who can protect us against its consequences are the Defenders… meanwhile, the Defenders must race to stop the Breaker of Worlds from unleashing terror across the Marvel Universe.
Awesome stuff, if you missed #1, snag a copy this week, we’ve got copies in stock to catch you up.

SWAMP THING #5- SCOTT SNYDER, writer of BATMAN THE BLACK MIRROR & AMERICAN VAMPIRE, is DELIVERING HIS NEXT BIG HIT WITH THE NEW 52 SWAMP THING!
PREPARE FOR THE UPCOMING ANIMAL MAN CROSSOVER!
SWAMP THING by Scott Snyder and Yanick Pacquette has been a perfect example of how great the NEW 52 books have been, and also a good example of the diversity in genres that these titles are offering.
Snyder has crafted the kind of compelling, superhero/horror hybrid that only Alan Moore was able to achieve before him, and is giving us THE best take we’ve seen on SWAMP THING since those old ALAN MOORE issues.
Creepy as hell, Yanick Pacquette brings a very Wrightson / Bisette kind of magic to the world of SWAMP THING, bringing Snyder’s eerie story to life in a big way. And, as the series continues on, we’re getting closer to the upcoming crossover between SWAMP THING and ANIMAL MAN that Snyder and ANIMAL MAN Jeff Lemire have been hinting at through the use of the Rot in their two books.
A must-read, if you’re not on board wit SWAMP THING yet, you’ve gotta give this one a shot.

WALKING DEAD ARTIST CHARLIE ADLARD DELIVERS AN EERIE NEW ONE-SHOT THIS WEDNESDAY WITH CURSE OF THE WENDIGO
We love Charlie Adlard’s work on the WALKING DEAD, and you know for a guy who can bring zombies to life like he can, he’s gotta have some crazy creepy stuff in his head.. and that’s why we’re stoked for this Wednesday’s one-shot from him, CURSE OF THE WENDIGO.
It’s July 1917. The night air is rent by sentries’ screams. Everyone thinks it’s a trap laid by the enemy, but soon they hear screams from the German lines. Both camps are obliged to declare a truce and send a team of men, French and German, to solve the mystery. And, with them, goes Wohati, one of the 12,000 Native Americans fighting in the U.S Army.. and, probably the only man amongst these forces who knows what’s out there waiting for them.
A kick-ass story of a strange phenomenon wreaking havoc on the French and German trenches. Beware the Wendigo!

VALEN THE OUTCAST #2 FOLLOWS UP THE KILLER FIRST ISSUE OF THIS NEW SERIES THAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS “A GAME OF THRONES” MEETS “ZOMBIE CONAN”
Dude, this new VALEN THE OUTCAST series is pretty freakin’ cool. Picture this: a well-respected king and warrior ends up being killed by a Necromancer, and resurrected as one of the walking dead.
Now, he’s considered an abomination in his own realm, an outcast with only one purpose: to restore his lost soul. And, he’s going to hack and slash his way through as many enemies that he encounters to do it.
Picture A GAME OF THRONES with a zombie twist, throw in a little CONAN THE DESTROYER, and that sums up the feel and tone of VALEN THE OUTCAST pretty well. Plus, the artwork by Matteo Scalera is freakin’ rad.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN: ALPHA & OMEGA #1 - SUPERSTAR WRITER BRIAN WOOD (DMZ, NORTHLANDERS, DEMO) DEBUTS AT MARVEL WITH THIS NEW LIMITED SERIES THAT TIES DIRECTLY INTO WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN
Wolverine and the X-Men has really been one of the best damn new Marvel books to launch this year, and when we heard that BRIAN WOOD (writer of Third Eye favorites like DMZ & NORTHLANDERS) was going to be writing a limited series that ties directly into WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN.. we got pretty stoked.
The tension between Quinton Quire aka Kid Omega and Wolverine has reached a boiling point, and this 5-part mini-series finally sends the two of them head to head, as Wolverine is forced to discover that the hardest prison to escape may be his own mind.
Brian Wood is an INCREDIBLY talented writer, and we are so pumped to see him doing some Marvel stuff now, and with how great the X-Books have been, specifically WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, we’re really confident in this one being a big hit this week. Make sure you snag yourself a copy this Wednesday.

BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT GOLDEN DAWN COLLECTS THE DAVID FINCH DARK KNIGHT PRECURSOR TO THE CURRENT DC NEW 52 “BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT” SERIES
A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF BATMAN: HUSH
For those of you who’ve jumped onto the DC NEW 52 with BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, and are totally digging DAVID FINCH’S killer story and artwork on that title, then you HAVE to go back and snag a copy of the story arc that David Finch did that precedes his current run.
In BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT GOLDEN DAWN, we see Finch dive headfirst into the supernatural side of Gotham City, as he explores the horrific murder of one of Bruce Wayne’s childhood friends, and the terrible ramifications that the brutal crime has on Batman’s life.
And, of course, if you’re a fan of stuff like BATMAN HUSH or the current BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT arc, then you will love this, because it delivers more of Finch’s incredible hyper-detailed, comic book bliss artwork that makes his Batman stuff so rad, carrying on in the tradition of HUSH artist JIM LEE.

THE PHALANX RETURN IN A SPECIAL ISSUE OF UNCANNY X-MEN THIS WEDNESDAY WITH UNCANNY X-MEN #4
UNCANNY X-MEN continues to impress us as this week delivers a very special issue set amidst the chaos of Mr. Sinister’s attacks, and brings the return of classic X-Men villains… the PHALANX, in all their techno-organic virus glory.
And, yes, that is most definitely Juggernaut-powered Colossus dishing out some serious beatdowns to them.
UNCANNY X-MEN has been a totally awesome read ever since it was relaunched, and Kieron Gillen is really doing a fantastic job of telling strong stories that really take us back to the classic Claremont/Byrne feel of the X-Men in it’s glory days.
If you’re not yet reading UNCANNY, which is the BLUE TEAM’s flagship book, we highly recommend jumping on board with issue #1, as it’s an easy entry point to the series, and is easily one of the best X-Books on the stands.

STAFF PICKS
ANNAPOLIS
STEVE: WITCH DOCTOR: RESUSCITATION - One of my favorite new IMAGE series that’s launched in the last year or so, this was an excellent read, and I love the old school horror vibe the artwork conjures up.
TRISH: CROSSED BADLANDS OPENING SALVO - Just a tease, but I cannot wait to see Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows back on CROSSED!
TORMA: CAPTAIN AMERICA #6 - I loved the McNiven and Brubaker arc, but the first issue of the Alan Davis / Brubaker arc has me even more excited!
 PRINCE FREDERICK
GEORGE: AQUAMAN #4 - Just like Johns’ Justice League, this series is looking better and better with each issue.
SHAUN: MONOCYTE #2  - The first issue of this moody horror was only teasing us. The second issue delivers on stunning H.R. Giger-like visuals and a cynically horrific storyline.
