This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 2/8/12

THIEF OF THIEVES #1 - “WALKING DEAD” / “INVINCIBLE” writer ROBERT KIRKMAN teams up with “INFINITE VACATION / “MORNING GLORIES” writer NICK SPENCER on an incredible new IMAGE series
Book of the week? Heck, lets talk BOOK OF THE YEAR here. This new series from IMAGE COMICS is going to be a big-time heavy hitter of a read, with a powerhouse creative team, an incredible artist, and holy crap: it’s GREAT.
I was lucky enough to read this bad boy last week, and I was floored by how much I enjoyed it. I mean, lets be real here: taking two of the most talented writers in the IMAGE COMICS stable, and pairing them up means there’s some high expectations… but my expectations were met, AND exceeded.
Ok, so instead of gushing about how great the series is for like eighteen paragraphs, let me tell you what it’s about.
Conrad Paulson lives a secret double life as master thief Redmond. There’s nothing he can’t steal, nothing he can’t have… except for the life he left behind. Now, with a grown son he hardly knows, and an ex-wife he never stopped loving, Conrad must try to piece together what’s left of his life before the FBI finally catch up to him… but it appears they are the least of his worries.
The first issue was dynamite, and Kirkman and Spencer are on point, bringing their A+ game here. It reads smooth, and unlike a lot of other books that venture into the super-thief/super-spy genre, it avoids cliches, while still maintaining the classic sense of cool of noir protagonists. There’s a sense of believability in the dialogue, and behavior of the characters, and we chalk that up to the one-two punch of Spencer / Kirkman, as they’re both known for their expert characterization, whether it be the way the survivors deal with grief in WALKING DEAD, or the sharp wit of the students in MORNING GLORIES, they’re no stranger to writing believable characters.
After just one issue, I’m hooked, and invested in the characters, while at the same time, intrigued by where the overall plot is heading. Also: Shawn Martinbrough? Your art is KILLER. The art in this one has a very Phil Noto-esque feel to it, and that is the finishing touch that really sends this one over the top as my favorite book of the week.
Folks, don’t miss out, we all know how hot many of the new IMAGE releases have been, and we feel that THIEF OF THIEVES is going to really catch fire, and turn into something very big.
Heck, after just reading issue #1, I can already see potential for this to end up becoming a TV show or movie. There’s almost a MADMEN Don Draper-kind of appeal to the main character, and a very interesting take on the people he surrounds himself with.

RICK REMENDER, writer of UNCANNY X-FORCE, officially begins his SECRET AVENGERS run this Wednesday in SECRET AVENGERS #22 with rising star artist GABRIEL HARDMAN and the incredible colors of BETTIE BREITWEISER (last week’s WINTER SOLDIER #1)
Folks: this is the one Marvel comic you need to be reading that’s NOT Uncanny X-Force. Trust us, it is, by far, going to end up being one of the best books of the year, and you could not ask for more of a  WHO’S WHO of some of the fastest rising talent in the Marvel stable right now.
First off, you already saw what Rick Remender could do last month with the jump-on POINT ONE issue of SECRET AVENGERS. And, you know the man has got some serious chops from his current work on UNCANNY X-FORCE: THE DARK ANGEL SAGA. Now, throw in one of the most talented artists in the game right now, with GABRIEL HARDMAN, a name that will be burned into your head alongside X-Force’s JEROME OPENA, by the  time 2012 is through. Finish it off with the extremely talented Bettie Breitweiser on colors (did she rock it, or what last week with WINTER SOLDIER #1?), and you have got yourself one hell of a read.
What’s the scoop? Well, after having HAWKEYE being given control of the team in last month’s SECRET AVENGERS #21.1 (in stock now, Remender’s first issue of his current run here), the new team and line-up is thrown headfirst into the action, as a sovereign nation founded by, run by, and inhabited by super-villains becomes a major threat.
Of course, the general public, and the United Nations itself, would freak out at the thought of the international incident that this could end up being… so, what’d Earth’s Mightiest do? They go covert ops, that’s what!
With new team members coming on board in the form of CAPTAIN BRITAIN, VENOM and GIANT MAN, and the current members, BEAST, BLACK WIDOW, and VALKYRIE following in HAWKEYE’S lead… we are stoked to see where this one is heading.
And, while we could be off-base here… considering REMENDER is also writing UNCANNY X-FORCE, we feel there may be a bit of cross-pollination between the two books, along with some tidbits as to where Beast’s allegiances will lie going into SECRET AVENGERS.
But, all I can say, Third Eye Faithful, is pictures speak louder than words. So, check out the preview below, and see why we’re stoked for this one.

CONAN RETURNS TO COMIC AWESOMENESS IN CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 IN A BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES FROM “NORTHLANDERS” & “DMZ” WRITER BRIAN WOOD and “DEMO” ARTIST BECKY CLOONAN
A MUST-READ!
Conan and Pirates FTW!
It’s been a long time since we’ve been this excited about a CONAN comic, and folks: we’ve got good reason to be excited. Two of our favorite creators working in comics are going to be pairing up to deliver what looks to be the most exciting CONAN series in DECADES.
See, CONAN is the type of character that lends itself quite well to comic books, but it’s rare that a creator comes along and really makes a mark in a major way. In our opinion, this upcoming run will stand alongside classic runs like the Barry Windsor Smith stuff, the Sal Buscema stuff, and the Kurt Busiek / Cary Nord stuff.
In other words, it’s going to be plain kick-ass comic book greatness, and we cannot wait.
Wood has already proven his knack for writing stellar barbarian madness with his brutal, and detailed NORTHLANDERS saga, and Becky Cloonan, with her recent mini-comic, WOLVES, shows she has a real knack for capturing the mystery and intrigue of this forgotten world.
In the first arc, QUEEN OF THE BLACK COAST, Conan turns his back on the civilized world and takes to the high seas alongside the pirate queen Belit, setting the stage for an epic of romance, terror, and swashbuckling.
A perfect jumping on point for anyone who’s never picked up a Conan comic, and a bold, fresh take on the Cimmerian, do NOT miss out on CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 this Wednesday.

GREEN LANTERN #6 – THE NEW 52 SPIN ON THE GREEN LANTERN SAGA, WITH SINESTRO AS THE GREEN LANTERN OF EARTH HAS US HOOKED!
MISSED ISSUES 1-5? WE’VE GOT ‘EM IN STOCK TO CATCH YOU UP
GREEN LANTERN continues to impress, and hold it’s place as one of the best DC COMICS on the stands. Just when you think GEOFF JOHNS may have reached his peak on the Lantern saga, he takes things in an interesting new direction, and continues to keep us hooked.
We’ve been loving the twist on the series, with Sinestro being Hal Jordan’s replacement, as well as the quest that Hal has been on to retrieve his ring, so we cannot wait to see what goes down in this week’s #6.
With the tumultuous battle for Korugar past them, Sinestro and Hal are now at a crossroads. They must pick up the pieces of their lives. The question is, will they do it alone.. or together?
Not reading GREEN LANTERN? As one of our favorites in the NEW 52, and written by GEOFF JOHNS, of AQUAMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE fan, we highly recommend hopping aboard, and catching up to where the series is currently.
We’ve got issues 1-5 in stock now to catch you up to this week’s GREEN LANTERN #6.

GARTH ENNIS, writer of THE BOYS, CROSSED, PREACHER, and PUNISHER MAX, kicks off his newest series, spinning out of the carnage of JENNIFER BLOOD, with THE NINJETTES #1 this Wednesday
We’re huge fans of Garth Ennis here at Third Eye, with the stellar stuff he’s done on series like THE BOYS, and PREACHER, so when we hear the man has something new in the works… we tend to pay attention.
And, this Wednesday, Ennis kicks off a brand new series, that conjures up some of the grind house bloodshed and mayhem he demonstrated so well in JENNIFER BLOOD.
So, what’s the scoop on the Ninjettes? Who are they? How did they come to be dead and/or decapitated? And, what kind of brutal insanity is their passing about to unleash? Find out the grim connection between college student Kelly Hara and the ice-cold engine of death known as Varla as the origin of the Ninjettes is revealed in this ultra-violent odyssey of sin, scandal, and brutality.
A must-read for any Ennis fan, make sure you snag issue #1 this Wednesday at Third Eye.

SCARLET SPIDER #2 - THE RED HOOD OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, SCARLET SPIDER KICKS ASS… ALL THE POWER, NONE OF THE RESPONSIBILITY.. WE LOVE THIS BOOK!
Missed #1? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up!
SCARLET SPIDER debuted last month, and surprised the heck out of us. Chris Yost, and Ryan Stegman delivered one hell of an awesome debut issue, and have really brought something fresh, and exciting into the Marvel fold with this new twist on an older character.
Featuring the imperfect clone of Peter Parker, Kaine, who’s past is littered with bad mistakes, and mutilated bodies, SCARLET SPIDER is a tale of a Spider-Man who doesn’t carry the same kind of guilt and dedication to doing what’s right that Parker does, but at his core, is trying to keep himself from spiraling further into the pit he’s created for himself.
We love the approach of the new series, with issue #1 picking up shortly after the events of SPIDER ISLAND. Kaine is physically health in the wake of Spider Island, but still remains a tad bit mentally off-balance. And, now, he’s found himself in a new home: Houston, TX.
We love the idea of a Marvel hero operating in a new city that’s not NYC or somewhere in California. It’s pretty cool to see a new locale, and a new environment, and it really makes for an interesting impact on the character.
The big hook of the series is the very RED HOOD (DC’s JASON TODD)-feel of SCARLET SPIDER, as a Spider-Man who finds himself in a much darker territory.
We’re big, big fans of the new SCARLET SPIDER series, and highly recommend jumping on board, whether you’re just a fan of good Marvel titles in general, or are a big Spidey fan. Either way, we feel you’ll really dig it.
Didn’t snag issue #1? No biggie, we’ve got plenty of copies in stock of the first printing to catch you up to this week’s SCARLET SPIDER #2.

SUICIDE SQUAD CONTINUES TO IMPRESS WITH SUICIDE SQUAD #6 – THE ORIGINS AND MOTIVATIONS OF HARLEY QUINN EXPLORED!
MISSED ISSUES #1-5? WE’VE GOT ‘EM IN STOCK TO CATCH YOU UP
We’ve been loving the new SUICIDE SQUAD series that’s been a part of the DC NEW 52, and I’ll have to admit, a big part of that is because we’re major fans of HARLEY QUINN. The fact that she’s the starring character of SUICIDE SQUAD, along with two other Third Eye faves in King Shark and Deadshot, has us hooked.
And, now a brand new arc begins, featuring Harley heading out on her own, in search of her pudding’, Mr. J. We’re pretty stoked about this one, as it looks like this is going to be a story that delves much deeper into the origins of Harley Quinn, her psychosis, and who she is.
Very cool stuff, we’re stoked to check this one out this Wednesday.
Not reading SUICIDE SQUAD? We’ve got issues 1-5 in stock to catch you up to this week’s SUICIDE SQUAD #6.

FERALS #2 – AVATAR PRESS, THE PUBLISHERS OF “CROSSED”, “NEONOMICON” & MORE DELIVER A VISCERAL, IN-YOUR-FACE WEREWOLF HORROR STORY MEETS MODERN DAY CRIME DRAMA
MISSED #1? WE’VE GOT COPIES IN STOCK TO CATCH YOU UP

We loved the first issue of David Lapham’s (writer of CALIGULA, CROSSED PSYCHOPATH, and CROSSED FAMIL VALUES) FERALS, and we are totally stoked to see where he takes it in this week’s FERALS #2.
The blood continues to spatter as Lapham redefines horror storytelling in this 21st century remaining of the werewolf mythology. No silver bullets, no moon transformations here — only vicious, animal fury and lust as the secret of the FERALS is slowly revealed.
The story focuses on Officer Dale Chesnutt, who is hunting a monster that he doesn’t quite know exists yet, and is soon to find himself as the prey instead of the predator here, as the normally quiet town of Cypress begins to turn into a bloodbath.
One part CROSSED, one part Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez’s FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, Ferals is a freakin’ kick-ass horror comic, and a must for your collection if you’re a fan of stuff like CROSSED, NEONOMICON, and other AVATAR PRESS hits.
Missed out on issue #1? We’ve got plenty of copies in stock to catch you up to this week’s #2.

INCREDIBLE HULK #5 CONTINUES THE KILLER TOP SHELF AWESOME STREAK THAT THE NEW HULK SERIES HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATING!
NOT READING HULK? WE’VE GOT ISSUES 1-4 IN STOCK TO CATCH YOU UP
Third Eye Faithful, I gotta tell you: I freakin’ love the new INCREDIBLE HULK ongoing series that’s been keeping us on the edge of our seats for 5 issues now. Everything about it, from the sharp, and innovative writing and storytelling of JASON AARON (WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, SCALPED) to the INCREDIBLE art team of SILVESTRI and PORTACIO, this book has got it ALL, folks.
It’s been a long time since the Hulk has been this good, but I’m telling you: it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite Marvel titles on the stands.
What’s the scoop? Well, after the events of FEAR ITSELF, the Hulk and Banner, literally split into two separate entities. And, guess who the real monster is now? It’s been fascinating to watch as Banner’s descent into a mad, obsessed scientist in a quest to reclaim the gamma irradiated power he once had, drives him to do horrible things.
Meanwhile, the Hulk, who is very reminiscent of his, quiet, yet cunning persona as seen in PLANET HULK, just wants to be left alone. But, before he can do that, he’s got one mission to complete: KILL BRUCE BANNER!!!!
Jason Aaron pulls out all the stops on this one, providing a very slick balance of cutting edge superhero action, and mayhem, with quirky, and interesting ideas like THE MAD SQUAD, a group of special agents dedicated to terminating MAD SCIENTISTS.
Throw in an entire island of Dr. Moreau like monstrosities that Banner has created, and folks, we are in for a real treat.
One of my favorite Marvel titles on the stands, if you’re not reading the Hulk, even if you’re not a Hulk fan, I highly recommend giving this one a shot, and trying it out. You’ll be stoked on it, just like us.
Need issues 1-4? We’ve got plenty of copies in stock to catch you up to this week’s #5.

DEMON KNIGHTS #6 – PAUL CORNELL CONTINUES TO DELIVER ONE OF THE BEST SLEEPER HITS OF THE DC NEW 52 WITH DEMON KNIGHTS
CATCH UP WITH ISSUES 1-5 THIS WEEK, ALL IN STOCK NOW!
I gotta tell ya, Third Eye Faithful, Paul Cornell’s work on DEMON KNIGHTS has been some of my favorite in the DC NEW 52 stable. Not only does he have a true knack for just writing plain cool, and awesome stuff with DEMON KNIGHTS, but it’s also obvious he’s got a very well-thought out long-term plan for the book and it’s story.
We love the idea of various locales of the DC NEW 52 being explored in the era of the Dark Ages, with a very cool sword-and-sorcery approach to things like the town that will become Gotham, and so on.
This series takes us back to the very early days of Etrigan, and delivers some of the best, most epic medieval storytelling and action month after month. You want GAME OF THRONES in the DC UNIVERSE? Read DEMON KNIGHTS.
Fantastic interior artwork, incredible storytelling, one of the DC NEW 52′s best kept secrets.

MEMORIAL has really added something special to IDW PUBLISHING’S line-up, with it’s unique, and fascinating urban fantasy feel.
A must-read for fans of things like Neil Gaiman’s novels, Locke & Key, The Unwritten, and Fables, MEMORIAL really delivers the kind of otherworldly, well-crafted fantasy with modern sensibilities that we’ve come to love out of the previously mentioned series above.
In issue #3, we find Em and Schroedinger desperately trying to find Peter, which brings them to the ancient tower of Babylon…only Babylon isn’t so much a what, as a who. And, just when they think they’re about to get some answers, a host of shadow warriors shows up, grabs Em, and high tails it across the plain.
A must-read, if you’re looking for a killer modern fantasy series, MEMORIAL is awesome.

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #5 - ONE OF THE BEST X-MEN BOOKS WE’VE READ SINCE THE DEBUT OF UNCANNY X-FORCE! A FRESH, FUN, AND EXCITING NEW TAKE ON THE X-MEN
Need 1-4? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up!
WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN has been quickly becoming another of our biggest Marvel favorites right now, and funny, it’s also written by the very talented JASON AARON (INCREDIBLE HULK). I wonder if that has something to do with it? :)
Seriously though, this has quickly turned out to be one of the best X-Books we’ve read in quite some time, as Aaron brings a fresh, and fun new spin to the X-Men, that we haven’t seen in quite some time.
We love the idea of Wolverine taking on the Xavier Institute, renaming it the JEAN GREY SCHOOL OF HIGHER LEARNING, and bringing a whole new generation of X-Men under his wing, and the little hints of Morrison-influenced weirdness that Aaron laces throughout the team and school has us hooked.
As the road to AVENGERS VS. X-MEN continues, we’re pretty darn stoked to see where Wolverine’s loyalties will lie, and we’re sure that we’re going to find out in these upcoming issues of WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN.
Also: Nick Bradshaw? Holy CRAP. Is this guy good, or what? I love the ART ADAMS-inspired awesomeness that he brings to the page, and could get lost in his artwork. The guy is GREAT, and you couldn’t have picked a better choice to be switching on and off with the very talented Chris Bachalo.
Not reading WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN? We’ve got issues 1-4 in stock to catch you up to this week’s #5.

RICHARD CORBEN’S MURKEY WORLD ONE-SHOT DELIVERS CRAZY POST-APOCALYPTIC SWORD & SORCERY AWESOMENESS
You know, there are some legends in comics that seem like they’ll be here forever, and Richard Corben is one of those. He’s never been the biggest name in comics, but in terms, of building a loyal, enormous fan-base… he is one of the kings. Much like Bernie Wrightson, when you see Corben’s incredible, stylized artwork, it strikes you right away: Holy crap, that’s Richard Corben!
And, I think it’s pretty damn cool he’s still pumping out the awesome, which is why we’re stoked about this week’s MURKY WORLD one-shot from DARK HORSE.
In a bizarre land populated by hungry deadlines, cruel necromancers, and buxom cyclops, Tugat the warrior sets out to retrieve his lost horse Frix… and, of course, all hell breaks loose in this epic of pure sci-fi post-apocalyptic horror and fantasy.
A unique kind of tale that really can’t be described as anything other than: Richard Corben.
We love it.

CARNAGE USA #3 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY, AS SPIDER-MAN BATTLES TO SAVE AMERICAN’S HEARTLAND FROM THE GENOCIDAL SYMBIOTE MADMAN
Need Issues 1 & 2 ? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up.
Clayton Crain is a freakin’ phenom of art awesomeness, Third Eye Faithful, and we’ve never seen a more perfect pairing of artist and character than Crain and Carnage.
The brand new CARNAGE USA series has got us hooked hard, as CARNAGE has reunited with Cletus Kassidy, and has his eyes set on leaving the biggest body count across the U.S.A that he can.
It’s up to Spidey and the Avengers to bring him down, but, when you’re dealing with a blood-thirsty space symbiote that’s attached itself to a homicidal madman with no moral compass… it’s no easy task to take ‘em down.
The last page of this issue is worth the price of admission alone, Third Eye Faithful, trust us, you’ll be stoked.

THE CIRCLE OF FOUR CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN VENOM #13.1 WITH CIRCLE OF FOUR CHAPTER TWO
A MODERN DAY SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE REVIVAL OF AWESOMENESS
We loved last week’s VENOM #13, which kicked off chapter 1 of the big CIRCLE OF FOUR arc that’s giving RICK REMENDER the same kind of platform that DARK ANGEL SAGA did in UNCANNY X-FORCE. And, what platform might that be? To take some concepts and ideas from the ’90s era of Marvel, and spin them into something completely awesome, and kick-ass.
And, that’s what he’s doing with this killer 6-part storyline, and we’re loving it.
What’s the scoop? Hell has broken out on Earth, and right at ground zero, there’s only one being: the new Ghost Rider, and she’s got the legions of the damned right behind her.
Now X-23, Venom, and Red Hulk must defeat their worst (and now-resurrected) enemies, to buy Ghost Rider enough time to stop hell’s march across the globe.
As a clone, the question of X-23 having a soul is answered, after many years of her own personal torment… and, who is Ichor, and why has he decided that VENOM MUST DIE?
Totally fun, we’re loving CIRCLE OF FOUR, and the only thing that could take us back to the old days of SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE and LETHAL PROTECTORS would be glow-in-the-dark covers.
Need VENOM #13 *CIRCLE OF FOUR* from last week? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up.

THE DEATH OF DEADPOOL BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY IN DEADPOOL #50.. IS THIS REALLY THE END FOR THE MERC WITH A MOUTH?
JUMP ON BOARD NOW, AND FIND OUT! FEATURING THE UNCANNY X-FORCE!
DEADPOOL #50 brings a landmark issue this Wednesday, and with it… the beginning of the END. The Merc With A Mouth is about to meet his maker, and we’re stoked for this arc more than we’ve been stoked for any DEADPOOL arc since his return a few years ago.
I mean, obviously, as a comic fan who grew up reading in the ’90s… I’ve got love for DEADPOOL, and the resurgence the character has seen in the last few years, you gotta love it… but, I also have to admit: I’m pretty stoked to see how they plan to kill off ol’ Wade Wilson!
And, after having read some advance pages of issue #50, all I can say is this is one hell of a killer read!
While the surprises of this one are half the fun, we can say this is definitely a DEATH OF DEADPOOL arc, and… yes, the UNCANNY X-FORCE is involved.
Make sure to hop aboard this penultimate run of Daniel Way’s DEADPOOL ongoing series, and find out what the fate of the Merc with a Mouth is.
We’ve also got the 49.1 issue in stock still, which is a great prologue to the DEATH OF DEADPOOL arc.

MARVEL BEGINS SEASON ONE, WITH KILLER NEW-READER FRIENDLY RE-ENVISIONINGS OF THEIR MOST ICONIC CHARACTERS!
PICTURE THE MARVEL UNIVERSE EQUIVALENT OF LAST YEAR’S “SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE”
The Marvel Universe is re-visiting the origins of it’s most iconic characters, and putting a brand new, cutting edge spin on them with their upcoming SEASON ONE original graphic novels, and we think they look KILLER.
Taking inspiration from last year’s SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, which was a modern day re-telling and re-imagining of the Man of Steel’s early days, SEASON ONE will be re-imagining the early years of the Marvel Universe’s icons in the present day, and we’re pretty stoked to see what’s in store.
This week, they kick things off with a very slick take on the FANTASTIC FOUR, that begins with Manhattan’s most famous skyscraper, The Baxter Building, and scientific genius Reed Richards’s plan that will change the lives of those he loves most — and the very course of human history — in a way that no one could have ever imagined.
The beginnings of the Marvel era of super-heroes is here, and with it, comes the very first appearances of The Mole Man, Doctor Doom, and Prince Namor in ways you’ve never seen them before.
A very fascinating, and well-done re-imagining of the Marvel U, these are fantastic new-reader friendly graphic novels that you can jump on board with, and get a modern, killer take on the FANTASTIC FOUR that’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
