DETECTIVE COMICS #9 & BATWING #9 KICK OFF THE FIRST TWO CHAPTERS OF “NIGHT OF THE OWLS”, THE CROSSOVER SPINNING OUT OF SCOTT SNYDER’S BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS, AND HEADED UP BY SNYDER HIMSELF!
One of the most exciting DC crossover events since BLACKEST NIGHT begins in this Wednesday’s NIGHT OF THE OWLS Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, and folks, we could not be more stoked for this.
First off: many of you guys are from the same generation as us where big, epic sweeping Batman crossovers rocked our socks every Summer, and we loved it. So, after a few years of being out of the limelight, it’s pretty damn cool to see the Dark Knight back in the spotlight.
Secondly: it’s masterminded by the one and only SCOTT SNYDER, who I have been singing the praises of non-stop since his impressive creator-owned debut AMERICAN VAMPIRE.
Scott has blown us away with his incredible work on BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR, GATES OF GOTHAM, and most recently, his current run of the flagship “BATMAN” title with the COURT OF OWLS arc.
And, the COURT OF OWLS is exactly what has kicked off what is the biggest DC event storyline that we’ve seen in quite some time. Remember how SINESTRO CORPS WAR was the sleeper hit arc that really caught fire, and kicked off the now-classic BLACKEST NIGHT?
This is how we view NIGHT OF THE OWLS, and, folks, trust us, you DO NOT want to sleep on this one. It’s going to be amazing, and one of the BEST Batman stories in ages.
What’s the story behind the NIGHT OF THE OWLS? The Court of Owls was originally introduced in the pages of the NEW 52 flagship BATMAN title, pitting Bruce Wayne against an enemy unlike any he’s ever faced: one he knew nothing about.
The Court of Owls leads Batman into a secret society that’s been quietly running Gotham from beneath the surface for years, and as Batman investigates… the Owls mercilessly torture him. Talon, the ruthless Owl hit man, leads Batman through mazes of torment, and even beats him half to death. All of this is in a way to break Batman, undermine his control over Gotham, and take the city for their own completely.
In NIGHT OF THE OWLS, The Court of Owls has snapped after witnessing one of their Talons bested by Batman, and now, legions of Talons awaken to reclaim Gotham City.
With an arc that brings in ALL of Batman’s supporting cast, from Tim Drake to Dick Grayson to Barbara Gordon, and many of his most fearsome enemies, from MR. FREEZE to SCARECROW and more…. this is going to be one hell of an amazing read, Third Eye Faithful.
The First chapter kicks off in DETECTIVE COMICS #9, as the Talons continue their assault on Gotham City, with ones target in mind: JEREMIAH ARKHAM.
Meanwhile, chapter 2 leads into BATWING, as Batwing arrives in Gotham City just in time to join the fight against the Court of Owls.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH AVENGERS VS X-MEN #3- HAVE WOLVERINE AND CAPTAIN AMERICA FINALLY REACHED A BREAKING POINT? AND, HAS HOPE GONE AWOL?
THE BEST MARVEL BLOCKBUSTER IN YEARS CONTINUES
Three issues in, and hot damn, AVENGERS VS X-MEN is SMOKING. Marvel has got themselves a real winner here, folks, delivering one of THE best Marvel event books that we’ve read in quite some time.
Stellar artwork, stellar storytelling, all the way through, AvX is the comic book equivalent of Wrestlemania, as we see the most iconic super-teams on the planet: the AVENGERS and the X-MEN going head to head against one another, as the PHOENIX FORCES gets closer and closer to Earth.
So far, folks, AvX has really brought it, as each issue has been action-packed, and focused on the heavyweight characters that you want to read about.
The actual plot and story is PERFECT, and the drama, and excitement that’s been built within each issue is excellent. The Hope saga has been built up in an interesting way for the last few years, and this is the perfect culmination of it.
What’s the background story? When SCARLET WITCH wiped out all the mutants, things looked pretty bad, until Hope was born. Hope, the first mutant baby born since M-Day, was the hope to bringing back the mutant race.
However, she’s also the Phoenix’s hope for resurrection, and it’s on it’s way to inhabit her body, and make her the newest host of the Phoenix Force.
And, the Avengers? They don’t want that. ‘Cause when the Phoenix gets involved, people die. Lots of people.
But, Cyclops isn’t handing Hope over so easily, and from there: WAR BEGINS!
Too freakin’ great, we’re loving the heck out of AvX, folks, and we highly recommend getting into it if you haven’t already.

MIND THE GAP #1 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING NEW IMAGE COMICS OF THE SUMMER!
A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF “MORNING GLORIES”
You know, sometimes I know a comic is good, just because I’m left speechless after finishing it, and MIND THE GAP is definitely that kind of comic. It’s difficult to pinpoint the genre that this fascinating supernatural-themed mystery falls into, as it covers so much ground, so all I can say is this: this comic is damn good.
Writer Jim McCann (Return of the Dapper Men, Hawkeye & Mockingbird) crafts a fascinating kind of story that connects you to the characters right from the get-go. Much like other IMAGE classics, like CHEW, and MORNING GLORIES, MIND THE GAP immerses you in these characters, their lives, and their dramas.. and this, this is how you get hooked.
‘Cause as we’re soon shown, this book takes you to some really strange, and interesting places.
So, what’s it about? Meet Elle Peterssen, who is mysterious attacked on a Manhattan subway platform, and left in a coma. The only clues to her attacker trapped inside her mind. No one knows the identity of the person behind this brutal being, or when they will strike next.
This ongoing series shows us that everyone is a suspect, and no one is innocent. An exciting, modern-day thriller with a supernatural twist, MIND THE GAP keeps you on your toes all the way through.
And, we cannot finish talking about MIND THE GAP without mentioning the amazing artwork courtesy of MORNING GLORIES cover artist RODIN ESQUEJO (who does the interiors here), and colorist SONIA OBACK.
Holy crap: this book looks great. We always thought that the covers of MORNING GLORIES were incredible pieces of art, but to see Rodin rocking it out on the interiors? WOW!
And, all the little art techniques, and methods used to tell this fascinating story, are really keeping us interested.
Finally, folks, this book has IMAGE hit written all over it, so DO not sleep on MIND THE GAP this week.

SMALLVILLE: SEASON 11 #1 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY CONTINUING THE EPIC TELEVISION SERIES IN A NEW MONTHLY SERIES
I know that many of you folks were huge fans of the SMALLVILLE televisions series, and while we didn’t get into it until closer to the end, we gotta say: it really turned into a truly awesome piece of the Superman mythos, Third Eye Faithful.
So, we’re pretty stoked to see a brand new series from DC COMICS, and the creators of SMALLVILLE, which gives us “SEASON 11″ of the series, picking up right after SEASON 10, and showing us just what happens after Clark Kent puts on the Superman costume, and ventures out into the world.
A stellar read, and an official piece of the SMALLVILLE continuity, this is a must-read for any SMALLVILLE or SUPERMAN fan.

VALIANT COMICS RETURNS THIS WEDNESDAY IN A MAJOR WAY WITH X-O MANOWAR #1 – AND IT IS SO, SO AWESOME.
VALIANT COMICS was one of the most influential, and impressive independent publishers of the ’90s, and there’s many of you guys, ourselves included, who hold the Valiant era of comics near and dear.
So, when we saw that some very talented folks from major comic publishers were venturing out to bring VALIANT back, in a big way, we got pretty pumped.
And, folks, after having read X-O MANOWAR #1… VALIANT is back, in full effect. This first issue was one of the best debuts, and relaunches we’ve seen in a minute of any kind of superhero book. y i
It stays true to the spirit of the original X-O, but at the same time, manages to bring you fresh, new reader-friendly series to jump on board with, without having prior knowledge of the original X-O MANOWAR world.
Cary Nord brings the best artwork of his career to the table on this one, and delivers a fully-realized, science fiction fantasy world that’s swarming with laser swords, and barbarian hordes. The writing is sharp, and the series starts off with a nice, smart and clean timeline, that gives you all the background you need to understand just who the hell X-O is.
What is X-O MANOWAR? In a nut-shell, there’s Romans, and Visigoths, and X-O MANOWAR is a Visigoth named Aric, who has decided to make a stand for his people against the Romans who have been oppressing them.
Of course, this whole story is told against the backdrop of a sci-fi, mech-armor and laser-pistol fueled world that makes it all the more interesting. A fascinating blend of alt-history sci-fi, Iron Man-style super heroics, and Conan the Barbarian, X-O MANOWAR is freakin’ awesome.
The first issue is a fantastic read which delivers a cinematic experience that brings you everything from alien invasions to medieval battlefields, and beyond. At no point does this one feel like it’s slowing down, and the pacing is perfect.
Folks, do yourselves a favor, and jump on board one of the most anticipated releases of the Summer with this Wednesday’s X-O MANOWAR #1.
On a side-note, for those of you who pay attention to hot books, this series looks to have buzz written all over it, and we’re anticipating it to be one of the more sought after new releases of the Summer.

FURY MAX #1 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY FROM GARTH ENNIS (THE BOYS, PUNISHER MAX) AND GORDON PAVLOV
You guys know we’re huge GARTH ENNIS fans, and folks, his work on PUNISHER MAX, was some of the best Marvel stuff… EVER. And, if you read his PUNISHER MAX stuff, then no doubt, you saw his incredible MAX portrayal of NICK FURY as a grizzled, cold war CIA op, who slugged back Tequila, bounced from woman to woman, and had no problem putting a bullet in a man’s head. Ennis’s portrayal of Fury was almost like THE COMEDIAN from WATCHMEN.
And, starting this Wednesday, Ennis returns to the world of MAX, with a brand new series starring NICK FURY in the NC-17, mature-readers MAX world.
In the wake of World War II, Fury is fast running out of battles to fight. But the world’s superpowers are gearing up for a new kind of war, and a man like Fury is pretty much required to win it.
Gritty, gory, and gruesome, FURY MAX is cold war carnage at it’s finest, and folks, we can’t recommend it enough.

EPIC KILL #1 - IMAGE COMICS DEBUTS A KILLER NEW 5-ISSUE LIMITED SERIES THAT IS PURE “KILL BILL” CARNAGE FROM START TO FINISH! A MUST-READ TEENAGE KUNG-FU DEATH MACHINE EPIC!
EPIC KILL is EPIC KICK-ASS. I had high hopes for this one, after reading about it a few months ago, but I gotta tell you, Third Eye Faithful, after finishing #1 this weekend, all I can say is this: the book kicks ass. BIG-TIME. I mean, you wanna see a girl killing hordes of people with her bare hands? Gruesomely punching holes in their torsos, and cutting their jugulars with karate chops?
This is EPIC KILL.
The story starts showing us hit men and mercenaries from around the globe who’re ordered by the President to bring down an eighteen-year old super assassin named Song — but she’s going to turn the tables on them — and every kill is going to be epic.
Song has trained for years into adulthood to take revenge on the man responsible for her parents’ deaths — the man who has just been elected President.
And, it’s going to be a long, bloody way to the top, Third Eye Faithful.
This book is bad-ass, and conjures up a STRONG KILL BILL kinda vibe, as we’re shown the training sequences with SONG with a VERY David Carradine-esque character. And, the fight sequences? RIDICULOUS. Seriously. We’re talking a body count that stacks with each page, as Song chops, kicks, and eviscerates bad guys with her bare hands.
The story and art is both by Raffael Ienco, and the story’s not the only thing that rocks here, ’cause the art is freakin’ great.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE TPB VOL.2 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING THE SECOND VOLUME OF “BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS” WRITER SCOTT SNYDER’S EPIC
AMERICAN VAMPIRE is one of our month in, and month out, favorite reads. Seriously, this book continues to impress the hell out of us with each and every issue, and we know that many of you guys eagerly await to collect it with each trade paperback that hits. So, we were pretty stoked to see that volume 2 of AMERICAN VAMPIRE arrives this Wednesday in softcover.
This volume collects issues 6-11 of the stellar series from BATMAN: BLACK MIRROR / BATMAN COURT OF OWLS writer SCOTT SNYDER, and takes us to Las Vegas circa 1935. Skinner Sweet, and Pearl must learn the hard way that the bloodsuckers in Hollywood were nothing compared to the ones in Sin City.
Folks, if you’re not reading AMERICAN VAMPIRE yet, YOU NEED TO BE. This series is one of the most fascinating takes on the vampire genre we’ve ever seen, as it brings a no holds barred FROM DUSK TIL DAWN by way of ONCE UPON TIME IN AMERICA kind of vampire story to us.
The driving plot point of AMERICAN VAMPIRE focuses on how different regions of the world produce different effects of the vampire infection, but that’s just the springboard, the real draw of the series is it’s rich tapestry of characters and lore. The politics of the vampires, the generational form of storytelling that follows the protagonists through the ’20s, the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, and beyond…. it’s all very cool. It’s almost like watching MADMEN, but with Peggy Olsen ripping Campbell’s throat out along the way.
Seriously, this book is BADASS. If you’re not reading it, grab the first graphic novel this Wednesday at Third Eye!

Avengers Academy has always been a favorite with us here at Third Eye, and we are so stoked to see this upcoming AvX tie-in that features the AVENGERS ACADEMY crew and the GENERATION HOPE kids coming to blows.

There’s really no easy to sum up just what it is that makes this book so special, I mean, Jeff Lemire’s storytelling is top notch, but Travel Foreman’s artwork is incredible!

As these new abilities continue to terrify Buddy and his wife Ellen, things take a turn for the worse as Buddy begins a startling transformation of his own that will lead him on a journey into the heart of THE RED.
A horrific take on the superhero genre, ANIMAL MAN is must-read stuff. If you’re big on the weirdness and quirk of IMAGE hits like CHEW, or MORNING GLORIES, with their strong characterization, and weird surroundings, we really feel that you’d love ANIMAL MAN.

Another one of the DC NEW 52 WAVE 2 titles arrives this Wednesday, with GI COMBAT, which brings old school war comic craziness to the DC NEW 52 in a big way.
This first issue features on the return of the old school war comic classic HAUNTED TANK, bringing a quirky, supernatural twist to the war comic genre.
