This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 4/18/12

THE SHADOW RETURNS COURTESY OF GARTH ENNIS (THE BOYS, CROSSED ,PUNISHER MAX) IN A BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES WITH THE SHADOW #1
What evil lurks in the hearts of men? Garth Ennis knows. At least that’s what we’ve seen from his past works that have plumbed the depths of human depravity, like THE BOYS, CROSSED, PUNISHER MAX, and PREACHER.
So, when we heard that Ennis was going to be starting a new project, well, we got pretty excited, and then when we heard he was going to be re-inventing the classic pulp icon, THE SHADOW, in a dark, and grim new way… well, we practically lost it.
If you ask me, Ennis and The Shadow are a match made in heaven. The Shadow has a reputation of being one of the most brutal pulp heroes of his day, and throughout his many incarnations, has always been one of the characters with a very mysterious dark side to them.
No one handles characters like this better than Garth Ennis. His epic 10-trade paperback long run on PUNISHER MAX proves that he knows how to handle the sheer pulp madness of a lone vigilante against the world, and keep it interesting, and it looks like the SHADOW will continue his streak of impressive stories.
It’s the year 1938. The Shadow has returned, as a night of carnage on the New York waterfront plunges the mysterious vigilante into a conspiracy involving the fate of the world itself.
As storm clouds gather across the globe, American Military Intelligence meets with a certain Lamont Cranston, determined to beat a host of spies and assassins to the greatest prize of all… but what that might be, only the Shadow knows.
Uber-violent, gritty as hell, and in-your-face from the first page, Ennis’s SHADOW really captures the take no prisoners attitude of the original pulp novel incarnations of the character.
If you’re a fan of Ennis’s past work on series like THE BOYS, PREACHER, and PUNISHER MAX, then you will LOVE The Shadow. Also, if you dig on the dark, noir stylings of stuff like FATALE, this is also totally up your alley.
Folks, trust us on this one: the new SHADOW series kicks ass in all kinds of ways, and we can’t recommend it enough. We’re giving this one our Pick of the Week seal of approval.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH AVENGERS VS X-MEN #2, as well as AVENGERS #25 *AvX TIE-IN*WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #9 *AvX TIE-IN*
All we can say about AvX is: MORE! Give us more! Seriously, Marvel has outdone themselves with this incredible event, and we haven’t seen this kind of excitement surrounding a major Marvel storyline since CIVIL WAR.
This may be the best Marvel title we’ve read in ages, and we’re loving the sheer blockbuster throw down madness of the whole thing.
With the Phoenix Force heading to Earth, and Hope it’s obvious host, The AVENGERS have decided it’s time to step in. But, Cyclops, well, he’s not letting this go down without a fight, and as we saw in last week’s NEW AVENGERS #24… this is getting REAL, folks.
We got a big clue-in to the direction that Wolverine will be heading in regards to the scheme of things in AvX in last week’s NEW AVENGERS #24, and in this week’s AVENGERS VS X-MEN #2, we see the choice has been made.
Now, with the Avengers storming the beach of Utopia, and the Phoenix getting closer to Earth, all hell is about to break loose.
At the center of it: Hope will make a decision that will forever change the direction and scope of the Marvel Universe for years to come.
The most exciting thing we’re reading from Marvel or DC right now, Avengers vs X-Men is the home-run that Marvel had hyped it up to be, and we cannot wait to see where things go with issue #2 this Wednesday.
Wanna get caught up? We’ve got AVENGERS VS X-MEN #0 & AVENGERS VS X-MEN #1 in stock now to catch you up to this week’s #2.

MANHATTAN PROJECTS #2 – THE RED HOT NEW IMAGE HIT SERIES CONTINUES FROM JONATHAN HICKMAN! A MUST-READ SCI-FI ALTERNATE HISTORY EPIC WITH A DARK TWIST
Folks, if you look up “good comics” in a dictionary, you’re going to see this book next to those words. Seriously. Manhattan Projects is one of the most exciting new series of 2012, and continuing the trend that Image has set of exciting, fresh and new creator-owned books, MANHATTAN PROJECTS also happens to be one of their hottest new releases of the year.

In this amazing alt-history epic by the writer of PAX ROMANA, NIGHTLY NEWS, THE RED WING, FANTASTIC FOUR and SECRET WARRIORS, we’re shown a very harrowing glimpse at how the entire project that’s responsible for the Atom Bomb is simply a cover up for worse, more terrible secret projects.

Albert Einstein, and Martin Oppenheimer (and the twist on Oppenheimer is RIDICULOUS, let me tell ya!) star as two of the main focuses here, alongside many other figures from history, as we’re shown a clandestine program to develop new and fascinating weapons in the race to be the world’s international super-power.

Now, in this week’s issue #2, we lear about the secret role that the super-scientists of the MANHATTAN PROJECTS played in the fall of Germany during WORLD WAR II. It’s the hidden history of Werner Von Braun, the rocket god of Deutschland and the only guy before 1950 to have a super-cool robot arm.

Seriously, giant robot-arm!

The thing that makes the sci-fi madness of MANHATTAN PROJECTS so damn intriguing and entertaining ? Hickman is using legit, actual historic events and figures to weave a story of epic proportions. The twist on Oppenheimer ties into the way the REAL Oppenheimer behaved at points in his life… and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

We really cannot wait to see where this one is heading next.

One of the best books on the stands, if you’re not reading MANHATTAN PROJECTS, jump on board this Wednesday.

We’ve got plenty of MANHATTAN PROJECTS #1 in stock now to catch you up for this week’s #2.

BATMAN #8 – PRELUDE TO THE “NIGHT OF OWLS”, AS SCOTT SNYDER’S AMAZING “OWLS” TRILOGY CONTINUES!
ALSO, FEATURES A VERY COOL BACK-UP STORY EXPLORING THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE COURT OF OWLS!
The flagship BATMAN title has increasingly become more and more THE book to read in the DC NEW 52. I’d say it’s even surpassed JUSTICE LEAGUE in terms of must-read terms, and now, moving to this week’s BATMAN #8… we are so pumped to see the second act of Snyder’s incredible “Owls” trilogy begin.

Scott Snyder is probably one of the most talented writers working in comics today, and if you’re digging his run of BATMAN, then you really need to snag: BATMAN THE BLACK MIRROR (too awesome, one of the best BATMAN graphic novels you’ll read in years), AMERICAN VAMPIRE (our favorite Vertigo title right now), and SEVERED (an incredible new IMAGE horror mini-series).

But, back to BATMAN… The Court of Owls concluded with issue #7, and now, as we move forward towards the epic ‘Empire Strikes Back’ of the Owls Trilogy, THE NIGHT OF OWLS, Snyder begins to explore the secret history behind the Court of Owls.

This week’s BATMAN #8 marks the prelude to the NIGHT OF OWLS arc, and also includes a very special back-up story exploring the history and mythos of the Court of Owls.

And as per usual, Capullo and Snyder KILL IT on this book. The artwork is incredible, with Capullo delivering THE look for Batman in comics today. Not since Jim Lee’s iconic HUSH take on the Dark Knight have we seen a creator really re-define while at the same time capturing the iconic sense of the character.

What’s the whole scoop on all of this? Basically, once Bruce Wayne went public with the fact that he was funding BATMAN’s efforts, a clandestine group that’s been running Gotham from behind the scenes for many years, surfaced with one mission: KILL BRUCE WAYNE.

From there, we’ve seen a brutal, and unrelenting battle between Batman and this enigmatic guild of assassins and power-players, with their enforcer TALON delivering an epic smack down on the Caped Crusader.

A fantastic blend of the dynamic superhero excitement of Jim Lee’s HUSH, the dark noir mystery of THE LONG HALLOWEEN, and the pure iconic energy and excitement of Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s BATMAN: TAS, Snyder and Capullo’s BATMAN is a MUST-READ.

Wanna jump on board? We’ve got issues 1-7 in stock now to catch you up to this week’s #8.

IMAGE COMICS’S KILLER NEW SERIES PROPHET CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH PROPHET CHAPTER 4 – A MUST-READ SPACE EPIC WITH SOME OF THE MOST UNIQUE COMICS STORYTELLING GOING DOWN TODAY!
CAN YOU PICTURE SCOTT PILGRIM MEETS CONAN THE DESTROYER? YOU’LL LOVE PROPHET
We love this comic. Seriously. If you want to look at another great example of what GOOD comics are all about, then you need to give PROPHET a shot.

Over-the-top, and in-your-face, this is epic adventure storytelling at it’s finest, folks. Post-apocalyptic, dystopian sci-fi futures fueled with impressive Eurocomics-influenced artwork in the vein of MOEBIUS. Prophet delivers. Again, and again, and again.

The video game-style narrative tricks that Brandon Graham brings to the book’s writing are also clever ,and help make the series that much more immersive. Itemized inventory lists, world maps, and character stats are effortlessly weaved into the story in a way that fits perfectly.

In this week’s fourth chapter of PROPHET, John Prophet’s mission has been changed. He now has to cross the continent-sized starship of Sleepingman to save a creature who has crashed onto the world below. He must survive deadly radiation and a strangely familiar thing that’s beentrapped in the ship for what seems like an eternity.

If you’ve dug stuff like Graham’s KING CITY, or the quirkiness of something like SCOTT PILGRIM, you’ll love PROPHET.

A great mix of epic post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure, quirky humor, and just plain crazy good artwork.. PROPHET is the bomb. No doubt about it.

Wanna get caught up? The series began with PROPHET #21 (don’t even worry about the first 20 issues, they came out many years ago and have no connection to this series), and is now up to #24. We’ve got plenty of issues 21,22, and 23 in stock and available now to get you caught up to this week’s #24.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN: WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #9 DELIVERS A CRUCIAL TIE-IN TO AvX THIS WEDNESDAY
We are so pumped for pretty much anything that’s got an A and an X on it now, so when we saw we were getting two BIG AvX tie-ins in addition to AvX #2 this week, we got more than just a little stoked.

This Wednesday, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #9 drops, and continues to explore the effects of Wolverine’s decision in which side he’ll be choosing in the war between the two teams he’s shared allegiances with.

Now, the question is…. what side will the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning take? Will they follow their headmaster, or go another direction?

Another stellar AvX Tie-in, this is also a great time to try one of our favorite Marvel books, with WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN. This series has been FANTASTIC since issue #1, and is one of the freshest, and most innovative X-Books we’ve seen since UNCANNY X-FORCE began a couple of years back.

The quirky sense of humor that surrounds the new class of X-Men has us hooked, and there’s a strong sense of weird that runs through the book that really channels the excitement and energy of Grant Morrison’s EPIC New X-Men run.

We totally love new characters like Broo and Kid Gladiator, and the dynamic of placing Wolverine in a mentor and teacher role is PERFECT.

Plus: the art team of Bachalo and Bradshaw is on point each and every time.

One of our favorites yet, give it a shot with this week’s very special AVENGERS VS X-MEN tie-in.

RESET #1 – LEGENDARY INDIE COMIX GREAT PETER BAGGE (creator of HATE) RETURNS WITH HIS NEW SLICE OF LIFE SCI-FI THRILLER RESET! A MUST-READ
When I sold my comic collection as a way to help fund the birth of Third Eye, I kept only a couple boxes worth of stuff. This was the kind of stuff that I just COULDN’T part with, and one of those boxes contains a whole run of HATE, NEAT STUFF, and more of Peter Bagge’s work.
So, let me start this off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of Bagge, and whenever he comes out with something new, I’m pretty pumped, ’cause the man just does not dish out enough comics these days.
Much like ROBERT CRUMB, Bagge has his own style, and some folks love it, others don’t. Personally, I think it’s amazing, and if you’re into stuff that’s a bit quirkier, or off-the-beaten path, then we really think you’ll enjoy RESET.
In this new limited series from DARK HORSE, RESET asks the question: if you could relive major events in your life, would you take a stab at making things better — and would your best attempts only make things worse? Or would you use your second chance to put your most twisted, perverted fantasies in motion? These are the questions washed up actor and comedian Guy Krause asks himself after he signs up to be the main research subject for a virtual reality experiment that goes terribly wrong.
As always, RESET has the trademark dark sense of humor that Bagge’s work normally does, casting an interesting light on the low-lives, and weirdos of the world in a big way.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #8 – THE FLAGSHIP TITLE OF THE NEW 52 CONTINUES, AS WE’RE SHOWN THE VERY FIRST ENCOUNTER OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE WITH THE GREEN ARROW!
ALSO, THE ORIGINS OF THE NEW 52 SHAZAM CONTINUE TO UNFOLD!
A MUST-READ!
We’re HUGE fans of JUSTICE LEAGUE, and loving every second of what is essentially the FLAGSHIP of the NEW 52. This blockbuster title delivers month in, and month out one of the best superhero books on the stands, as it establishes the origins and histories of the DC NEW 52 in an exciting new way.
Set in 5-10 years in the past from the present day DC NEW 52, this series explores the foundations that have gotten the DCU to where it is, and serves as a fantastic stage-setter for everything that’s happened in the DC UNIVERSE.
In this week’s JUSTICE LEAGUE #8, we see how in the five years that the JUSTICE LEAGUE has been a team, GREEN ARROW has never once been a member. And, he intends to rectify that right here, right now. However, there’s one member of the League that stands against his candidacy: AQUAMAN.
Also in this week’s issue #8, the secrets of the DC NEW 52′s own SHAZAM continue to unfold, and we are totally stoked to see just where they’re heading with that one.
Another kick-ass issue from start to finish, if you’re following any of the NEW 52, make sure you’re following JUSTICE LEAGUE (and of course, BATMAN!).
Wanna get caught up? We’ve got JUSTICE LEAGUE 1-7 in stock now to catch you up to this Wednesday’s JUSTICE LEAGUE #8.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME #3 – IMAGE COMICS’S DARK, AND HARROWING TAKE ON THE WIZARD OF OZ CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY
No Place Like Home is one of the raddest takes on the whole “fairytales gone wrong” genre that we’ve seen in a minute. In the vein of the Zenescope RETURN TO WONDERLAND trilogy, this series casts a very dark shadow on the world of Wonderland, and we’re loving every second of it.
A young girl with a troubled past returns to her home in Emeraldsville, and finds herself in the middle of a spree killer’s madness, with a trail of bodies that leads to a mystical portal to another world. A portal paved with yellow bricks… And, as Dee digs deeper and deeper into the past, she gets her first look at the enigmatic killer, and his motivations.
Killer stuff! Wanna jump on board? We’ve got NO PLACE LIKE HOME 1 & 2 in stock now to catch you up to this week’s #3.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN: AVENGERS #25 - CAPTAIN AMERICA HAS DECLARED WAR ON THE X-MEN! FEATURING THE LEGENDARY WALT SIMONSON ON ART!
Like we were saying above in our write-up for WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN, the tie-ins for AvX so far have been grade A top shelf Marvel magic, folks. We’re normally not this jazzed up about all the various side-stories, but Marvel has done an amazing job of effortlessly weaving these books into the BIG picture, and making each one a very important and integral piece of AVENGERS VS X-MEN.
This week’s AVENGERS #25 not only features a very special tie-in to AvX, as we see Cap mobilizing the troops, and declaring all out war on the X-Men, but it also begins the final story arc of AVENGERS for BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS.
Bendis has worked on Avengers for over a decade now, in their various incarnations, and this arc is truly the end of an era for such a hallmark talent. And, joining him for this historic final arc? The one, the only WALT SIMSON. Simsonson was pretty much the man who defined most, if not all, of what we know about Thor today, and his artwork is still every bit as awesome now as it was then.
The two together have joined forces to deliver one hell of an arc that serves as a crucial tie in to AVX.

SECRET HISTORY OF DB COOPER #2 – A BRAND NEW INDIE GEM FROM ONI PRESS THAT TELLS THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE CIA’S PREMIERE PSYCHIC ASSASSIN! MUST-READ STUFF!
The first issue of Brian Churilla’s incredible new Oni series SECRET HISTORY OF DB COOPER came out of nowhere, and really blew our minds. A sublime blend of stellar artwork, and solid storytelling DB COOPER tells a fascinating tale of historical fact, and historical fiction, and brings the two together in a big way to make for one hell of an entertaining story.
In SECRET HISTORY OF DB COOPER, we’re shown a very cool, and very different view of the infamous case of DB COOPER. A man who robbed an airplane, and then jumped out mid-flight never to be seen again. Everyone has a theory on what happened to D.B. Cooper, and we like Secret History’s theory the best.
In a very weird angle, Churilla introduces us to Cooper in a very different, very strange reality. Instead of conspiracy theories, and airplanes, we’re shown psychedelic monsters, and crazy swords. Loads of madness surrounds DB Cooper, and we’re loving eery second of it.
It’s hard to really capture the pure mayhem and fun of DB Cooper in one write-up, all we can say is that if you’re a fan of stuff like THE GOON, or HELLBOY, or heck, even conspiracy theories… READ THIS BOOK.

BACK IN PRINT: BATMAN: VENOM, THE CLASSIC TALE OF THE DARK KNIGHT GETTING HOOKED ON BANE’S STEROID-LIKE VENOM – A MUST-READ!
With THE DARK KNIGHT rises right around the corner, and Bane playing a HUGE role in that film, we’re starting to see a lot of very classic BANE-era stories coming back into print, and folks: we are stoked about this!
The early to mid-90s were a terrific time for BATMAN stories, and a lot of these have been out of print for way too long. So, to see many classic gems like this getting re-issued, we’re pretty pumped.
This trade paperback reprints the VENOM saga that originally ran in LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT #16-20. Shortly after the events of BATMAN KNIGHTFALL, Bruce Wayne finds himself failing to save a young girl, and becoming obsessed with increasing his performance to be a better guardian for Gotham.
And, to do this… he finds himself trying the deadly strength-enhancing drug, VENOM, the same drug that Bane used to turn himself into a monster capable of breaking the Bat.
Now, addicted to Venom, Wayne’s life begins to spiral out of control, as he finds himself becoming more and more like the man who crippled him.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES MICRO-SERIES #4: LEONARDO DROPS THIS WEDNESDAY GIVING THE LEAD TURTLE THE SPOTLIGHT
IDW has been doing a dynamite job of handling the Turtles with the new TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ongoing series, and the TMNT: Micro-Series one-shots, which deliver one-shot stories focusing on each individual character.
This week, IDW rounds out their Micro-Series with the LEONARDO one-shot, where we see the eldest brother of the Turtles, finding himself in a solo battle against hordes of hundred Foot Clan soldiers.
The first battle between the Foot and the TMNT begins here, in this epic prequel that leads into the next ongoing story arc of the TMNT ongoing series.
Killer stuff that totally captures the gritty tone and feel of the old school underground TMNT comics, make sure you snag yourself a copy this Wednesday.

INCREDIBLE HULK #7 – JASON AARON (SCALPED, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN) CONTINUES HIS EPIC RUN ON HULK AS DOCTOR DOOM and THE JADE GIANT SQUARE OFF!
The new ongoing INCREDIBLE HULK series has been one of Marvel’s breakout hits of the year, and we’re totally pumped about the direction the series is heading. It’s been a long time since we’ve been this excited about HULK, but, folks: this book KICKS ASS.
The combination of Jason Aaron’s action-packed, and in-your-face storytelling which brings a brand new dynamic to the Hulk by having split Bruce Banner and the Hulk into two separate beings with Whilce Portacio’s AMAZING artwork makes for some of the best Marvel magic on the stands today.
In the aftermath of the fateful events of INCREDIBLE HULK #5 and INCREDIBLE HULK #6, we’re moving ahead to some serious mojo as the one, and the only DOCTOR DOOM squares off against the INCREDIBLE HULK.
Seriously folks, we give this book a high recommendation. One of the best riffs on the Hulk we’ve seen in quite some time, and each and every issue has been a blast to read.

THE PUNISHER #10 *OMEGA EFFECT CHAPTER 2* - CONTINUES THE TRIPLE THREAT OF NYC MARVEL MADNESS IN THE “OMEGA EFFECT”
We’re totally digging THE OMEGA EFFECT, a new short-yet-epic triple threat crossover surrounding SPIDER-MAN, THE PUNISHER, and DAREDEVIL.
A send-up to the ’80s and ’90s rapid-fire crossovers that usually encompassed the NEW YORK-based Marvel characters, OMEGA EFFECT is a blast, and we’re loving every second of it. GOTHAM CENTRAL and PUNISHER writer GREG RUCKA teams up with DAREDEVIL and IRREDEEMABLE writer MARK WAID to deliver a stellar story here, and judging from last week’s AVENGING SPIDER-MAN and this week’s PUNISHER, they’re on fire.

UNCANNY X-FORCE #24 - THE X-FORCE HAS ONE MISSION: TO KILL AGE OF APOCALYPSE ICEMAN! FEATURING THE INCREDIBLY TALENTED PHIL NOTO ON ART
Uncanny X-Force continues to be one of the best written Marvel titles on the stands, and while we haven’t dug the artwork as much on the last few issues, we are STOKED to tell you that the art team is changing up, and Phil Noto has come on board for this week’s brand new issue #24.
Noto is one hell of a talent, and most recently, he delivered the incredible IMAGE graphic novel INFINITE HORIZON. Now, he’s kicking out the jams on UNCANNY X-FORCE, in this very special issue where the UNCANNY X-FORCE has one mission:
KILL AGE OF APOCALYPSE’S ICEMAN! And, as one of our favorite angles during the whole DARK ANGEL SAGA, we’re pretty stoked to see more of AoA Iceman, and X-Force’s hit mission.

RAGEMOOR #2 – RICHARD CORBEN’S NEW DARK HORSE SERIES ABOUT A CURSED CASTLE… THAT EATS PEOPLE (YES!)… RULES!
Richard Corben is an amazing talent. One of my all-time favorite comic artists, who brings such a depth, texture, and just sheer manic energy to his work that it really makes him unique.

With RAGEMOOR, Corben is staging one hell of a comeback, and delivering one of his biggest and most exciting projects yet. I mean, I’ll admit: the simple novelty of Ragemoor got me excited. A freakin’ LIVING CASTLE?! I mean, all sorts of images of being a kid, and playing those kitschy board games where you’re trapped in a living dungeon, sprang to mind, and you know what: Ragemoor delivers big-time.

This is a tale of pure horror, and terror, which delivers that trademark Richard Corben weirdness and madness in an incredible way.

In this week’s issue #2, Ragemoor’s mad owner gets caught in a deadly battle between a horrible race of worm men and the vicious monsters that guard his castle.

Crazy, off-the-wall stuff, in the vein of EC horror comics, and Jack Kirby’s maddest Marvel monsters, RAGEMOOR is a must-read.

STAFF PICKS
STEVE: SECRET #1 - A ton of great stuff out last week, but I loved the first issue of Hickman’s newest series. Really great stuff.
TRISH:  - SAGA #2 - The second issue? Even better than the first! This comic kicks so much ass!
TORMA:  AMERICA’S GOT POWERS #1 - Hitch’s art hasn’t looked this good since the days of ULTIMATES and AUTHORITY. Crisp, and detailed, this is Hitch at his best. Great story too. Think HUNGER GAMES with super-powers.

SHAUN:  SECRET #1 -  Choosing favorites lately is like choosing which tooth I love most. That said, the first four pages of Hickman’s latest are SUPERB, and it really doesn’t let up from there. If you love espionage and dirty deeds, this is something you can sink your teeth into!
RYAN: SAGA #2 - Second issue of one of the GREATEST comics ever
