This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 8/8/12

GAMBIT Returns In A Brand New Ongoing Series This Wednesday, and It Looks AMAZING! Make sure you don’t miss out onGAMBIT #1 this week at Third Eye!
For years now, we’ve been hearing the same thing from many of you:  Gambit needs his own series. And, you know what, we’ve been agreeing with you guys since Day 1.
And, now, I think we can all agree: our requests have been answered! Marvel is delivering one heck of a knockout new ongoing series with GAMBIT #1 this week, and it totally lives up to the high expectations that I know many of you have for a new GAMBIT series.
It’s been a long time since the Ragin’ Cajun has had his own monthly series, and we’re pretty proud to say that this book totally does it in style.
This new ongoing series features some sharp writing, and even sharper artwork, as Marvel’s premiere thief sets his sights on his biggest score yet. Too bad he may just be over his head here.
It’s going to take more than just playing cards and southern charm to get Gambit out of this one…. and, trust us, folks, you’re gonna wanna give it a read to see just what we’re talking about.

BATMAN #12 *NIGHT OF THE OWLS EPILOGUE* — The epilogue of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s epic COURT OF THE OWLS / NIGHT OF THE OWLS Saga arrives, paving the way for their next huge story arc!
Okay, Third Eye Faithful, by now, you know: I am huge, huge, huge into the SCOTT SNYDER & GREG CAPULLO run of BATMAN. And, I know that many of you guys are as well.
I mean, lets be real, this is quite possibly the best BATMAN of this generation. It stands up there head and shoulders alongside modern classics like DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, BATMAN YEAR ONE, BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN, and BATMAN: HUSH.
It’s really a rarity to be watching comic book history in the making unfold right before our eyes, and that’s what it feels like to be reading BATMAN right now. I really can’t offer any higher praise than that, folks: this is history in the making.
And, with Snyder & Capullo gearing up for a HUGE Joker storyline that’s spinning out of the COURT OF OWLS in October, now is the time to jump on board the New 52 flagship BATMAN title.
So, what’s the background on the COURT OF OWLS? Picture this: a centuries old secret society has been rotting Gotham City from the inside out for generation upon generation. And, Batman, who thought he knew everything there was to know about HIS city finds out that this city may not be his afterall.
A freakin’ dynamic, and fantastic journey through the history of not just Gotham City, but some of it’s most famous and infamous families, THE COURT OF OWLS delivers the kind of riveting storytelling that we want out of a good BATMAN book, and we cannot wait to see where this one goes next.
This week’s issue #12 is a very special epilogue to the NIGHT OF OWLS / COURT OF OWLS, and wraps up the current arc, while laying out everything we need for the upcoming JOKER story arc that begins in BATMAN #13 with DEATH OF THE FAMILY Chapter 1.
Wanna get on board? We’ve got both the individual issues (1-11) in stock now to catch you up, or you can grab the hardcover collecting issues 1-7, and then jump on with 8 and catch up from there.
Either way, do yourselves a favor, and get on board what’s turning out to be the best damn superhero comic on the stands.

GODZILLA: HALF CENTURY WAR #1 — The raddest GODZILLA comic you’ll ever read, from ORC STAIN artist JAMES STOKOE.
I am so excited about this one, Third Eye Faithful, I can’t even begin to tell you how pumped I am for this book. It seriously is one of the coolest things coming out this month.
Okay, so first off, we’re big Kaiju fans here at Third Eye, and we’ve been totally digging IDW’s past GODZILLA reads like KINGDOM OF MONSTERS, LEGENDS and the current Godzilla ongoing.
But, nothing, and NOTHING, comes close to the awesomeness that is the new GODZILLA: THE HALF CENTURY WAR.
And why is that? One reason, and one reason only, Third Eye Faithful: James f’n Stokoe. This dude can draw. Seriously, he may be one of my favorite artists working in the biz today, and putting him on Godzilla was a genius move for IDW.
If you’re not familiar with Stokoe, he’s the guy behind the over-the-top sci-fi fantasy epic ORC STAIN, as well as WONTON SOUP, and the soon-to-be-released SULLIVAN’S SLUGGERS.
And everything he draws looks freakin’ awesome. Serious.
But giant monsters? Perfect.
Anyways, if you’re a fan of MOEBIUS, GEOFF DARROW, or recent stuff like the art in PROPHET or NONPLAYER, then you need to check out James’s work on this week’s GODZILLA: THE HALF CENTURY WAR #1.
What’s it all about? This series introduces a new and exciting look at Godzilla’s reign of destruction. The year is 1954 and Lieutenant Ota Murakami is on hand when Godzilla makes his first landfall in Japan. Along with his pal Kentaro, Ota makes a desperate gamble to save lives… and in the process begins an obsession with the King of Monsters that lasts fity years.
Don’t miss the first decade in a tale of a lifetime!

VALIANT RELAUNCH: ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #1 DEBUTS FROM VALIANT COMICS THIS WEDNESDAY

We’ve been totally loving the directions of all the new VALIANT titles that’ve been launching over the Summer, and we really cannot wait to read this week’s ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #1.
This actually may be the Valiant title that I have the least frame of reference on, as I never followed it in it’s original format, but I can tell you after reading issue #1: I am loving it.
Just like BLOODSHOT, X-O MANOWAR and HARBINGER have all provided exciting, break-the-mold kind of takes on the superhero genre, ARCHER & ARMSTRONG does the same.
After years of meditation and training, 18-year old Obadiah Archer has been dispatched to New York City to carry out the sacred mission of his family’s sect — kill the booze-addled immortal known only as Armstrong and convene a new world order! But as this underage assassin stalks his prey, he’ll soon find that both hunter and hunted are just pawns in a global conspiracy stretching back five millennia — and that Archer & Armstrong will have to work together if the future is to stand any chance of surviving the past’s greatest threat!
Who are the puppet masters pulling the strings of history? How is a centuries-old civilization tied to the very fate of the Valiant Universe?
Action-packed, with a bit of humor, imagine a mix of HIGHLANDER and BOONDOCK SAINTS, and that sums up the tone of ARCHER & ARMSTRONG.

DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #2 — The second installment of the red hot new limited series featuring DEADPOOL… slaughtering the Marvel Universe! And it rules!
DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE dropped last Wednesday, and it totally blew us away. What a freakin’ dark, demented, and totally fun read!
So, last week we told you guys all about what’s turned out to be the freshest take on the Merc With a Mouth in a few years, and now, we’re going to tell you this week: it lives up to all the hype, folks, brutal, bloody, and downright hilarious, DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE brings a little bad-assery back to the Merc with a Mouth in a big way.
What if everything you thought was funny about Deadpool quickly turned into something downright disturbing?
And, what happens when he goes postal and decides to kill everyone and everything that makes up teh Marvel Universe?
Trust us: it’s wicked. You’ll love it.
Wanna get caught up? We’ve got issue #1 in stock now to get you up to speed with this week’s #2.

NEW 52: DEATHSTROKE VOL.1 “LEGACY” ARRIVES IN TRADE PAPERBACK THIS WEDNESDAY
You know, there are some things in comics that will never go out of style, and DEATHSTROKE is one of them. He has got to be one of the DC Universe’s coolest, and most iconic characters, and we love the fact that in the NEW 52, they’ve kept him as basic and unchanged as possible.
In the brand new DEATHSTROKE series from GATES OF GOTHAM and NIGHTWING writer KYLE HIGGINS, and artist JOE BENNETT, Deathstroke is taken back to basics, and given a visceral, brutal storyline that shows us the man once ranked as the world’s greatest mercenary climbing his way back to the top.
After his reputation began to slip, and a mysterious briefcase enters the equation, the man known as Deathstroke decides to carve a bloody, gory swatch across the DCU in a quest to show the world what exactly makes him the best killer-for-hire.
Collecting the first six issues of the brand new NEW 52 Deathstroke series, this one’s a must-read, Third Eye Faithful!

LOVE DAWN OF THE JEDI? GET THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN WITH THE NEW STAR WARS: LOST TRIBE OF THE SITH SERIES FEATURING THE ORIGINS OF THE SITH!
We are huge Star Wars fans at Third Eye, and we have not seen a new STAR WARS comic launch with this much promise since last year’s DAWN OF THE JEDI.
It has a very cool take on the Sith, and shows you the origins of the Sith from their earliest point.
On a planet ruled by a tribe of Sith — marooned thousands of years ago and cut off from the galaxy–the throne holder is about to be challenged by a power-hungry Sith rebel from the slums… and a thwarted Royal Sith princess! Their few shared interests set them on a quest together — but most certainly not as partners.
The saga of the lost tribe delves into the deepest points of Sith history, exploring the mostly unknown history of the Sith, and the Dark Side of the Force.
And, this killer new series is an ALL-Sith story with heroes, antiheroes, and straight-up villains.
A total blast, and one of the most exciting new Star Wars books you’re gonna see launch this year!

MIGHTY THOR #18 *EVERYTHING BURNS: PROLOGUE* – The road to MARVEL NOW begins as EVERYTHING.. BURNS!
As AVENGERS VS. X-MEN nears it’s conclusion, and MARVEL NOW gets closer and closer, Marvel is beginning to bridge the gap between what’s going down in their titles during this transitionary point. And, folks: if this week’s MIGHTY THOR is any indication, it kicks ass.
The Asgardians are in serious trouble, as Ragnarok itself is nearing, and it’s up to Thor and Loki to unite, as everything burns down around them.
A war is brewing between the Aesir and the Vanir, and it’s going to unearth the darkest period of Asgard’s past for all to see. A history so dark… it was burned from the books of history, LITERALLY.
EVERYTHING BURNS will be crossing over into JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY and MIGHTY THOR, and we’re betting pretty big that this is going to be a major factor in the lead-up to MARVEL NOW.

WOLVERINE #311 *RETURN OF SABRETOOTH CHAPTER 2* — The Return of Sabretooth Continues! A Must-Read!

The new WOLVERINE arc by JEPH LOEB (BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN, and BATMAN: HUSH) and superstar artist SIMONE BIANCHI has been so freakin’ awesome, Third Eye Faithful, and we’re loving the direction that it’s headed.
First off: Sabretooth, is by far, one of the coolest villains in comics, and it’s great to see him being brought back to his roots. I mean, this is the Sabretooth you remember from the ’90s X-Men stuff that’s a seriously heavyweight foe, and after losing his head to Wolverine a few years back in WOLVERINE: EVOLUTION (available now in trade paperback), he’s returned… and only one question is left: which Sabretooth is the real Sabretooth?
And, where has the real Sabretooth been all this time, and whose side has he aligned with now?
Ultra-violent, in-your-face, and non-stop action-packed, the new WOLVERINE “Return of Sabretooth” story arc is a must-read, and we’re loving every second of it.
Take a peek at the preview pages at the link below, and see for yourself, Bianchi’s art is AMAZING on this one!

IT GIRL & THE ATOMICS #1 — Mike Allred delivers a killer new series from IMAGE COMICS this Wednesday!
Featuring REVIVAL artist MIKE NORTON!
One of my favorite artists in the ’90s when I was a teenage comic book addict was MADMAN by Mike Allred. I freakin’ love Allred’s unique, and stylized artwork, and I just could not get enough of MADMAN growing up.
So, when I saw Allred was going to be delivering a brand new series for IMAGE COMICS, I was pretty excited.
So, Allred has done something pretty cool with IT GIRL, he’s put together a very cool new series featuring his up-and-coming superhero, and it’s brimming with the kind of retro-comic book electricity that makes all of Allred’s work so damn fun to read.
Featuring the art of the one and only Mike Norton, the talented artist on the red-hot new IMAGE series REVIVAL, as well as the always awesome BATTLEPUG, IT GIRL AND THE ATOMICS focuses on introducing readers to the world of the Atomics, and the coolest Atomic of the mall, IT GIRL.
It captures the vintage spirit that we don’t see as often in superhero comics, you know, that kind of Jack Kirby sense of imagination, and wonder, while blending in a modern edge.
With the Atomics boys in outer space, it’s up to It Girl to keep the streets safe. Easier said than done: the Skunk, the man who murdered her sister, is out of jail and back to his old tricks. Meanwhile, Dr. Flem has a brand new space-time experiment and wants IT GIRL to be his guinea pig!
A total blast, folks, give this one a shot this Wednesday.

BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #2 DELIVERS SOME MORE OF THAT KICK-ASS BEFORE WATCHMEN GOODNESS!

BEFORE WATCHMEN is pretty much the definition of comic book awesomeness, and we’re loving every second of it.
The OZYMANDIAS title may be one of our big favorites, as Jae Lee’s artwork on this one is INCREDIBLE, and definitely puts it on top as one of the best-looking of the BEFORE WATCHMEN titles.
The storytelling in this one is fantastic too, as it’s very cool to see the insight into one of the WATCHMEN’s most fascinating characters.
We cannot wait to see where things are heading in this week’s BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #2.

THE MASSIVE #3 — Brian Wood’s post-apocalyptic saga of land pirates, and eco-warfare continues!
THE MASSIVE is one of our favorite new series of the year, and we are totally stoked on where it’s heading next. The writing, the artwork, everything about this book comes together to make one hell of an awesome read.
In a remote village in the Aleutian Islands, the crew of the Kapital, on the run from Siberian pirates, reconsiders their core mission as pacifists and conservationists. In this unpredictable and often violent world, should they be more? Narratives and storylines converge as the past catches up with the present, and in quiet, unassuming Unalaska, USA, a new mission is forged.
So, what’s THE MASSIVE about? From Brian Wood, the man who has wowed us with books like DMZ & NORTHLANDERS, the MASSIVE is a tale of a post-war, post-crash, post-disaster, post-everything world. And, in it, the environmental-action trawler Kapital cours the earth’s oceans for its mysteriously missing sistership, the Massive.
Helmed by Captain Callum Israel, a man who has dedicated his life to the ocean, now must ask himself — as our planet dies — what it means to be an environmentalist after the world’s ended. Callum and his crew will come up against pirates, rebels, murderers, and thieves as they struggle to remain noble toward their cause. Can you save a planet that’s laredy doomed?
This book is THE BOMB, Third Eye Faithful!
Wanna get caught up? We’ve got issues 1 & 2 in stock now to catch you up to Wednesday’s #3.

SPIDER-MEN #4 – The Crossover Between The 616 Universe AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN continues, and we’re loving every second of it!
We’re huge fans of both the current run of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN by DAN SLOTT, and the current run of ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS.
So, when you take Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, the regular creative team on the already totally awesome ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN series, and have them penning the first-ever crossing over of the regular Marvel U and the Ultimate U…. you know it’s going to be good stuff!
Now, the question is: can the Spider-Men stop Mysterio? Peter Parker comes face-to-face with the Ultimate versions of Aunt May and Gwen Stacy, and well, there’s a lot more awesome stuff, but we don’t wanna give you away all the good stuff!

A COMICS CLASSIC RETURNS TO PRINT IN THIS WEDNESDAY’S BRAND NEW GRENDEL OMNIBUS VOL.1: HUNTER ROSE TPB — NEVER READ GRENDEL? GET THIS NOW!
OK, Third Eye Faithful, one of the things that we love so much here at Third Eye about doing what we do is being able to share these classic, and sometimes overlooked gems with you.
And, this Wednesday’s first volume of the GRENDEL OMNIBUS series is the perfect opportunity for me to share one of my favorite Dark Horse titles with you guys.
Grendel is a unique kind of book. It has a special place in comic history as one of the trail-blazing first books to really deliver a genuine anti-hero. I mean, the Punisher may have been considered an anti-hero, but Grendel, well, Grendel was Mark Millar’s NEMESIS before there was a Mark Millar’s NEMESIS.
Now, Dark Horse is collecting the entirety of Matt Wagner’s now-classic Grendel stuff into these thick slabs of comic book awesomeness, all for the low price of just $24.99 each.
Matt Wagner’s masterpiece celebrates it’s thirtieth anniversary with this first-ever comprehensive collection of the complete Grendelsaga. The first of four volumes presenting the entire series and following the chronology of the stories, this edition introduces millionaire Hunter Rose, and his alter ego, the criminal mastermind, GRENDEL.
Over 600 pages of Grendel goodness, this features some of the best damn comic storytelling you’re gonna find, and I cannot preach it enough.
What’s Grendel about? Grendel serves as the masked identity of Hunter Rose, a successful author. As Grendel, Hunter Rose begins as an assassin before taking control of organized crime… all because he’s bored with the life that being a millionaire author has given him.
From there, we’re taken on a bloody trip, and as the series progresses, we see the mantle of Grendel picked up by all sorts of individuals.
It’s a fantastic, killer read, and we really recommend grabbing a copy and giving it a shot!

SCARLET SPIDER VOL.1 LIFE AFTER DEATH HARDCOVER DELIVERS THE FIRST KILLER STORY ARC OF THE RED HOT NEW SCARLET SPIDER SERIES!
If the MARVEL UNIVERSE had it’s own version of Jason Todd The Red Hood, it’d be this!
The new SCARLET SPIDER ongoing series has us HOOKED, Third Eye Faithful, and we know there’s a great deal of you who’ve been waiting to snatch it up in graphic novel format.. and I’m happy to tell you that it has arrived!
Imagine this: a Spider-Man who has all of the power, but none of the responsibility. A Spider-Man that KILLS.
Meet the new Scarlet Spider, the dark clone of Peter Parker known as Kaine, who has taken up the heroic mantle and relocated to Houston, Texas, to begin a new life.
But when Scarlet stands up to corruption in his adopted home, he discovers not everyone’s happy to have a new hero in town — and Houston’s super-criminal scene makes itself known!
As the Assassin’s Guild arrives to hunt for his head, Kaine’s dark past returns to haunt him. And, when he races against time to defuse a nuclear bomb, his heroics make him the target of Kraven the Hunter’s daughter — and attract the fury of the Avengers.
One of the best damn new Marvel books of 2011, do not sleep on SCARLET SPIDER, Third Eye Faithful!

SEAN MURPHY’S PUNK ROCK JESUS #2 CONTINUES THIS KILLER NEW SERIES FROM VERTIGO! GET ON BOARD & FIND OUT WHY THIS IS TURNING OUT TO BE ONE OF OUR FAVORITE NEW BOOKS!
Punk Rock Jesus is the kind of comic that really conjures up images of the heyday of Vertigo, and many other indie comics companies in the ’90s. It has everything I loved about the weirder side of comics growing up; a great plot, off-the-chain artwork, and a subversive edge tempered with believable characters, and unbelievable concepts.
I don’t know why, but I keep thinking of Miller/Gibbons’s Martha Washington comics when I read this series, and trust me, folks, that’s a very good thing (’cause those kicked ass!).
Plus: Sean Murphy? He’s amazing. His artwork is so damn good. I mean, you may know him from the AMERICAN VAMPIRE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST mini-series, or Grant Morrison’s JOE THE BARBARIAN, but it’s here, that we’re seeing him produce his best stuff yet!
In issue #2 of AMERICAN JESUS, the media circus around baby Chris reaches fever pitch as he performs his first “miracle” — but all may not be as it seems. Meanwhile, Thomas begins to question OPHIS’s methods, and young Gwen discovers exactly what it means to raise the new Messiah as the whole world is watching.
What’s Punk Rock Jesus about? Check it out, the newest reality TV show hit has the unlikeliest celebrity of all. J2, the TV series starring a clone of you know who, causes chaos across a near-future United States in Punk Rock Jesus. Religious zealots either love or hate the show, angry politicians worry about its influence on the nation, and members of the scientific community fear the implications of cloning a human being at all — let alone this clone!
And what effect does this all have on Gwen, the young woman who is selected, through an American Idol-style process, to be the mother of the new Messiah?
A fresh, and slick new series, if you wanna get on board, we’ve got issue #1 in stock now to catch you up to Wednesday’s #2.

Now that Princess Bubblegum is properly prepared to rock, it’s time to meet the band… the groovy, and the ghoulish SCREAM QUEENS!

DARK HORSE COMICS DEBUTS A BRAND NEW SERIES WITH THE CREEP #0 THIS WEDNESDAY! A BEAUTIFUL MASH-UP OF CRIME NOIR & HORROR STORYTELLING!
A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF “THE GOON” & “SIN CITY!”
Here’s one that crept up out of nowhere, and totally surprised us with how much we dug it! The Creep is a stellar new series kicking off from DARK HORSE COMICS this Wednesday, that totally hits the nail on the head with kick-ass comic book noir.
In the vein of SIN CITY or THE GOON, The Creep manages to serve up a unique blend of the fantastic, and the gritty reality of criminal underworlds, and it really comes across awesome.
Picture this: a young boy puts a gun in his mouth and pulls the trigger. The police don’t care. Not about his death or the death of his best friend two months earlier. The dead boy’s mom seeks help from an old flame that’s employed as a detective. What she doesn’t know is that he suffers from acromegaly; a physical deformity resulting in brutish facial features at mid-life. Will his appearance get in the way of solving the case?
A double suicide, an old flame, and a haunted man.. what more could you want?

IDOLIZED #1 ARRIVES FROM THE PUBLISHERS OF LADY MECHANIKA, ASPEN COMICS, THIS WEDNESDAY!
ASPEN has really built a strong reputation for itself with their unique take on comic books with recent hits like LADY MECHANIKA, EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT ASSASSINS, and of course, the legendary FATHOM and SOULFIRE titles.
Now, they’re kicking out the jams with an all-new series by the title of IDOLIZED, and if judging by the kick-ass issue #0 (still in stock to catch you up!) from last month, then we’ve got a lot to look forward to with Idolized.

KISS #3 — The Four Who Are One Meet The Destroyer!
One of our biggest guilty pleasures of 2012 is the new KISS comic from IDW. Once again, IDW proves themselves as the true masters of handling licensed properties and making them sharp, fun, and true to the tone of the original license.
If anyone else was doing a KISS comic, it’d probably be nowhere near as cool as this, but IDW knows how to walk that fine line of embracing the sheer ridiculousness of KISS as a comic, and still managing to provide a kick-ass story to keep us entertained.
As issue #3 drops, we’re shown the Demon, the Starchild, the Catman, and the Spaceman getting whisked away to a time of swords, sorcery, and guitar solos.
And, they get to come face to face with THE DESTROYER… and his arch-wizard, Black Diamond.
Folks, this is every bit as fun as it sounds, trust us! We’re not fine literature here, we’re talking KISS fighting dragons!
Wanna get caught up? We’ve got issues 1 & 2 in stock now to catch you up to this week’s #3!

How can you not love SCOTT PILGRIM? I mean, the movie was a great cinematic adaptation of the comic, that’s for sure, but hot damn: is the comic a pure work of art or what?
Bryan Lee O’Malley’s SCOTT PILGRIM is one of the best damn things to come out of comics in the last 15 years, and we are so happy to see it getting the full deluxe treatment with these gorgeous, new full-color, remastered editions of the original graphic novels.
