This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 10/17/12

MARVEL NOW: POINT ONE #1 - THE FUTURE OF MARVEL NOW IS SHOWN IN POINT ONE! THIS ONE-SHOT LAUNCHES THE UPCOMING YOUNG AVENGERS, CABLE & X-FORCE, AGENT COULSON, NOVA, ANT-MAN and the FF, Guardians of the Galaxy, AND MORE!
Folks, this may be one of the MARVEL NOW titles that I'm most excited about, but has the least hype behind it. Why might that be, you're asking?
Because this is the springboard for many of the MARVEL NOW titles that haven't quite gotten the spotlight that books like CAPTAIN AMERICA, UNCANNY AVENGERS, and ALL-NEW X-MEN have.
Personally: I am so pumped for stuff like NOVA, and the new GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, as well as Kid Loki getting a starring role in the upcoming YOUNG AVENGERS series. I'm also pretty stoked to see what looks like the inclusion of fan-favorite Avengers movie character, Agent Coulson, into the Secret Avengers line-up.
The Marvel NOW Point One one-shot showcases 6 big stories in a special oversized issue, featuring the all-star creative teams involved with each character.
Featured in this one-shot are all-original special prelude chapters to the upcoming YOUNG AVENGERS by Kieron Gillen (the talented writer behind JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY), Guardians of the Galaxy (featuring Bendis & McNiven), the FF and it's new leader Ant-Man (by Third Eye favorite Mike Allred), Secret Avengers featuring what looks like a recently returned Agent Coulson (by Nick Spencer) and the one we're most excited about: the new NOVA from Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness.
Nova may have been the character that came out of AVENGERS VS. X-MEN as the most intriguing, as the couple of times he showed up, he was really likable, and gave off a very INVINCIBLE (the killer series by Robert Kirkman) kind of vibe of a everyday teenager who'd lucked into the role of one of the universe's most powerful guardians.
We're really pumped to see how Loeb & McGuinness flesh out the character, and the direction they'll be taking with him, as well as what went down after his showdown with the Phoenix Force in AvX #12.
We're also pretty stoked about the debut of SECRET AVENGERS featuring Third Eye favorite, Nick Spencer, on writing chops. Spencer has wowed us with MORNING GLORIES, INFINITE VACATION, THIEF OF THIEVES, and more, and we're really stoked to see the cutting-edge style he'll bring to the book. Also, all the promotional material for the new SECRET AVENGERS seems to indicate that we're going to see Agent Coulson involved!
Also featured in the MARVEL NOW POINT ONE one-shot is the prelude to the HUGE upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY series by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (AVENGERS VS. X-MEN) and STEVE MCNIVEN (OLD MAN LOGAN), which we're really stoked about as well, especially with the talk of the upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie.
Of course, Cable and the X-Force is one we're all really stoked about as well, and we're pumped to see the prelude for that is going to be making an appearance here too.
All in all, this is a massive slab of Marvel awesomeness that is a perfect primer for some of the most exciting additions on their way to MARVEL NOW.
There's also a ton of connective tissue that frames the first year of Marvel NOW'S biggest stories, and we're pretty pumped to see that as well.

CATWOMAN #13 *DEATH OF THE FAMILY TIE-IN* -- The DEATH OF THE FAMILY arc continues in this week's CATWOMAN #13, sporting the killer die-cut DEAD SKIN MASK Joker cover!
The DEATH OF THE FAMILY arc kicked off in a HUGE way last week with BATMAN #13 & BATGIRL #13, and folks, we have gotta tell you: this is the biggest thing we've seen out of the BATMAN books in a very long time.
I mean, it's Scott Snyder, the mastermind behind last year's insanely well-received COURT OF OWLS / NIGHT OF OWLS stories, and he's delivering the long-awaited RETURN OF THE JOKER!
How can you not wanna absorb every single bit of this awesomeness? I mean, when you end last week's BATMAN with the Joker attacking Alfred with a freakin' hammer.. you know this one is going to be the real deal.
As this issue begins to dig deep into the origins and motivations of what makes Selina Kyle the thief that she is, we're taken on a sharp detour into madness as the one and only Clown Prince of Crime sets his sights on another member of the Bat-Family: Catwoman.
We don't want to ruin the twists and turns here, Third Eye Faithful, but trust us: this is worth picking up.
We'll have plenty of copies of this red-hot issue in stock, even though it's already set to go to a 2nd print due to the insane demand for the DEATH OF THE FAMILY books.
Never fear, Third Eye Faithful, we've got plenty of copies of BATMAN #13, BATGIRL #13, and CATWOMAN #13 in stock and available this week to get you all caught up on the biggest Batman story in ages: DEATH OF THE FAMILY.

EX SANGUINE #1 -- TIM SEELEY, writer of IMAGE hit REVIVAL, delivers a chilling new spin on the horror genre with EX SANGUINE!
Fright Night meets SE7EN.
Tim Seeley has been impressing the hell out of us with his current horror noir series from IMAGE, REVIVAL, and when we saw he had a new book coming out with Dark Horse in the form of EX SANGUINE, well, dammit: we knew it'd get us hooked!
Ex Sanguine looks to be a killer spin on the vampire genre, in the vein of FROM DUSK TIL DAWN, JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES, and NEAR DARK. In other words: these are hard-hitting, throat-ripping badasses of vampire awesomeness who've traded the romanticism of the classic vampire for the sheer brutality, predators we rarely see.
And, dammit, we love it.
But, the vampire's not the real monster here -- instead, we're shown a human killer... the Sanguine killer.. a brutal serial killer who's caught one of the few vampires in existence's attention with his disturbing crimes.
In Ex Sanguine, we're shown two individuals: one's a natural born killer -- a remorseless hunter restlessly prowling the night for victims to quench an unnatural bloodlust. The other's a vampire. A bored vampire. His centuries of existence have left him world weary, and detached, until one day his thirst is reinvigorated when the deadly intricate work of the Sanguine Killer catches his eyes.
Folks: if you like REVIVAL, you need to snag yourself a copy of this one. You know Seeley can do the horror thing right, and trust us: Ex Sanguine is freakin' off-the-chain!

WALKING DEAD #103 --  The next major story arc of WALKING DEAD arrives this Wednesday in issue #103!
WALKING DEAD has us hooked so hard, but, that's not a surprise, right? This has been one of the consistently best monthly comics on the stands, and it's showing no signs of slowing down now.
With SOMETHING TO FEAR concluding in last month's WALKING DEAD #102, things look like they're about to get pretty darn serious as the next major story arc of WALKING DEAD begins.
This issue is a new beginning for THE WALKING DEAD, with Rick Grimes finding himself no longer in charge, and nothing will ever be the same again.
A perfect jumping on point, which almost reads like a brand new first issue, WALKING DEAD #103 is a fantastic turning point in the world of WALKING DEAD and is the perfect time to jump onto the monthly if you haven't already.
Wanna get caught up? After WALKING DEAD VOLUME 16 in trade paperback, or WALKING DEAD VOLUME 8 in hardcover, OR, WALKING DEAD COMPENDIUM 2... you'll be up to issue #96, from there, we've got issues 97-102 in stock now to get you caught up to this Wednesday's #103.

HAWKEYE #3 -- The new HAWKEYE ongoing series is one of the best damn things to come out of MARVEL this year! A MUST-READ! Hop on board this cutting-edge new series!
HAWKEYE is shaping up to be one of our favorite new MARVEL series of the year, and with it's cutting-edge approach to the character, and his world, it fits in nicely amongst the MARVEL NOW titles.
Featuring the creative team of MATT FRACTION and DAVID AJA, who worked sheer comic magic years ago with IMMORTAL IRON FIST, this book reads and looks great. Aja brings a very Mazzuchelli kind of influence to it, which really reminds you of BATMAN: YEAR ONE. Fraction's everyman approach to Clint Barton, casting him as a modern day Robin Hood kinda soldier in a class war kinda world, is compelling and intriguing.
Plus: Kate Bishop is on the scene, and we know that means double the Hawkeye, which equates to double the trouble.
This series delves deep into the criminal underworlds of the Marvel Universe, and takes Hawkeye into a very avant-garde kind of direction, as he serves up some seriously lethal justice to those who would victimize those weaker than them.
Wanna get on board? We've got issues 1 & 2 in stock now to catch you up to this week's #3.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #13 -- PRELUDE TO TRINITY WAR -- The aftermath of the shocking kiss seen around the world in JUSTICE LEAGUE #12
The new JUSTICE LEAGUE series that's been serving as the flagship title of the DC NEW 52 has had us hooked since issue #1, and it's just getting better, and better.
The upcoming TRINITY WAR storyline is going to be a huge part of the NEW 52, and JUSTICE LEAGUE, and Geoff Johns is kicking things into high gear with this week's JUSTICE LEAGUE #13.
This week's JUSTICE LEAGUE #13 brings the debut of Cheetah, an iconic DCU villain who is destined to be one of the NEW 52's biggest threats. Who is she? What's her connection to Wonder Woman? And how will this fundamentally change the relationships within the team?
Plus: Geoff Johns and Gary Frank continue to build the world of Shazam in the epic back-up that's been running in the back of JUSTICE LEAGUE.
Another stunning issue of what's been called one of the best looking superhero books on the stands, JUSTICE LEAGUE #13 delivers a great follow-up to the landmark issue featuring the kiss of Wonder Woman and Superman in JUSTICE LEAGUE #12.
Wanna get caught up on JL? We've got issues 1-12 in stock now to get you up to this week's #13.

HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #3 DELIVERS CUTTING EDGE NEW TAKES ON STRATOS, EVIL-LYN and MER-MAN! A BLAST FROM THE PAST WITH A MODERN TWIST, THIS SERIES RULES!
As a child of the '80s and '90s, I am totally hooked on a lot of the recent revivals we've seen of classic '80s licenses, like TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, TRANSFORMERS, and of course: HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE!
This series is a fantastic read, which brings the cutting edge approach and appeal of modern comics to the classic fantasy sci-fi world of Eternia.
This week's issue #3, shows Teela and He-Man coming head to head with the most monstrous incarnation of Mer-Man we've ever seen, as a horrors of the deep almost Lovecraftian spin is put on the classic underwater He-Man bad guy.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #5 -- The new CAPTAIN MARVEL series continues to impress, as DOCTOR STRANGE: SEASON ONE artist EMMA RIOS joins KELLY SUE DECONNICK on this killer read!
Captain Marvel has really been a sleeper hit, and the momentum for this incredible new Marvel ongoing continues to build.
Featuring what's been probably the freshest, and most innovative take we've seen in quite some time on the one and only Carol Danvers, the new CAPTAIN MARVEL series is a fast-paced, action-packed blend of classic Marvel super-hero awesomeness and modern warfare military intrigue.
Kelly Sue DeConnick does a fantastic job of bringing the world of Danvers to life, and the addition of Emma Rios to the book makes it even more awesome, as we can't get enough of Rios's stunning art.
This issue is a fun read, as Carol Danvers finds herself toe-to-toe with some of the best pilots in American history... but all goes awry when she finds herself being accused of a major theft.
Bigger-than-life superhero action, the new CAPTAIN MARVEL series is a freakin' blast, and we highly recommend it. If you're digging stuff like Mark Waid's DAREDEVIL, then you'll really dig this.

ZAUCER OF ZILK #1 -- BRENDAN MCCARTHY, THE STUNNING UK ARTIST, BRINGS HIS UNIQUE BRAND OF PSYCHADELIA TO THE US IN THIS 2-PART LIMITED SERIES
We've been major fans of Brendan McCarthy's incredible, surrealist artwork for a long time now, and we've been on the edge of our seats waiting for something new to be brought over from the UK from this uber-talented artist.
Some of you may remember McCarthy's work on that really cool Doctor Strange / Spider-Man story a few years ago, FEVER, and if you do remember that, then you know, this dude has got some skills.
This week's ZAUCER OF ZILK #1 is a phantasmagorical psychedelic extravaganza from beyond the fringes of imagination! A special 2-issue adventure that features an inter-dimensional magician who travels across the realms to save his number-one fan from the dank clutches of his arch-nemesis Errol Raine.
The story may sound bizarre, but trust us: this one is worth it for the artwork alone, Third Eye Faithful!

FINDING GOSSAMYR #2 -- The stunning modern fantasy series continues to impress! A must for fans of STUFF OF LEGEND, MOUSE GUARD, THE AMULET, BONE, and FABLES! From the publishers of STUFF OF LEGEND!
The first issue of Th3rd World's FINDING GOSSAMYR blew us away, and it totally is a fitting follow-up to their hit fantasy series THE STUFF OF LEGEND, so we're pretty pumped to see issue #2 dropping this Wednesday.
This fantastic all-ages modern fantasy is the kind of killer read that's great for everyone, with PIXAR-level artwork (seriously: it's incredible), and a super-tight storyline that'll pull you in and not let go.

GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #13 *RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY* -- The RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY as KYLE RAYNER arrives on Earth to deliver some serious GL beatdown on the Third Army! PLUS: the debut of the all-new Carol Ferris STAR SAPPHIRE!
The RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY has really been turning into one of the best GL stories since BLACKEST NIGHT, and folks, it just goes to show ya: when GREEN LANTERN is good, it's GREAT.
The mythology that Geoff Johns has built for the Green Lantern titles over the last half a decade has been downright incredible, and with the RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY, we're getting the same kind of feelings we got from SINESTRO CORPS WAR and BLACKEST NIGHT.
This week's GL: NEW GUARDIANS continues the RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY arc as KYLE RAYNER arrives on Earth to some seriously bad news -- and he's going to take it on every Third Army member he sees.
Meanwhile, Carol Ferris makes her debut as the all-new Star Sapphire, and is looking to get to the bottom of Hal's disappearance.
Nothing says epic like a GL crossover, and RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY is the best GL arc we've read in quite some time. Highly recommended!

BILLY THE KID'S OLD TIMEY ODDITIES AND THE ORM OF LOCH NESS #1 DELIVERS STEAMPUNKY FREAKSHOW AWESOMENESS FROM THE CREATOR OF THE GOON, ERIC POWELL!
You may know Eric Powell better for his totally awesome Dark Horse series THE GOON, but, he's got some other kick-ass tales up his sleeve, including this little trip into a freakishly horrific Weird West.
The world believes the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid was killed by Pat Garrett, the Kid is very much alive, the hired gun of a traveling spectacle of biological curiosities --or "freaks," as Billy calls them. In this tale, Billy and his crew of sideshow freaks head to Loch Ness to rescue their lizard-skinned comrade from Count Dracula.
If you infused Alan Moore's LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN with Tod Browning's FREAKS, you'd get BILLY THE KID'S OLD TIMEY ODDITIES! A total blast, make sure you snag a copy this week and give it a go!

PUNISHERMAX: HOMELESS TELLS THE LAST PUNISHER MAX STORY, AS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE TAKES ON THE PUNISHER IS PUT TO REST!
Never Read the Mature Readers PUNISHER MAX series? Read Why You Should Below!
THE PUNISHER MAX series that Garth Ennis first kicked off many years ago has turned into THE definitive Punisher comic series to read. Seriously, there's never been anything better than Punisher MAX, and there probably never will be. The world that Ennis crafted, and that Jason Aaron later built upon, is downright amazing.
What is PUNISHER MAX? Punisher MAX was a comic series that took the Punisher out of the Marvel Universe. It removed all superpowers, all superhero-esque characters, and set Frank Castle in a very gritty, ugly world where the only Marvel characters you'd see pop up were grizzled soldiers like Nick Fury, or, later, blood-thirsty gangsters like THE KINGPIN.
Homeless marks the last trip into the world of PUNISHER MAX, as this is the end of the line for Frank Castle, and a freakin' amazing ending it is.
Since his family's death, Frank Castle has waged a brutal, never-ending war on crime as the Punisher. Once, he was the most feared man in the city -- but no more. Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, has brought him as low as he's ever been. No home, no weapons, no resources -- just a broken old man with nothing to lose. And the Punisher has never been more dangerous. There's no way Frank can get to Fisk in his ivory tower -- surrounded by soldiers and his deadly bodyguard Elektra. But Frank has a plan to draw Fisk out.
Now, the Punisher's war is about to reach it's grisly conclusion. In their final battle, either Wilson or Fisk will die -- but neither is going down without a hell of a fight.
A stunning ending to one of the best runs in comics, if you've never read PUNISHER MAX before, we highly recommend picking up PUNISHER MAX VOL.1 IN THE BEGINNING, which is in stock and available now at both Third Eye locations.

MUDMAN VOL.1 TRADE PAPERBACK DELIVERS THE FIRST FIVE ISSUES OF IMAGE'S FRESHEST TAKE ON THE SUPERHERO GENRE SINCE INVINCIBLE!
Only $9.99!
The MUDMAN series from IMAGE has been one of those little sleeper hits that totally deserves more attention, as it's one of the freshest, and most fun takes on superheroes that we've read in quite some time.
A modern-day take on the superhero genre, MUDMAN is very reminiscent of Robert Kirkman's INVINCIBLE, as it does a great job of telling the story of an everyday teenager who finds himself wielding strange and unusual powers and a responsibility to do the right thing.
From indie comix legend PAUL GRIST (KANE), MUDMAN is a straight-foward superhero comic with a flare for the modern, as it still manages to stay true to it's roots. Grist tells a tight little superhero story here that's true to the roots of characters like SPIDER-MAN and INVINCIBLE, as the main character has to deal with fitting his strange new powers into his normal life.
This is a total blast, Third Eye Faithful, and if you dig stuff like INVINCIBLE or RUNAWAYS, then you'll totally love it. Plus, the fact that Grist both writes and illustrates brings a unique cohesion to the story and art that really helps immerse you in the story.
