This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 1/16/13

SAVAGE WOLVERINE BRINGS WOLVERINE INTO THE MARVEL NOW, AND BREATHES FRESH NEW LIFE INTO THE CHARACTER WITH THIS WEDNESDAY'S SAVAGE WOLVERINE #1

I think, it's safe to say, that so far, the MARVEL NOW books have been insanely good, and really have brought a big improvement to the direction of many characters that may have grown stale over the last few years.

I can't think of any character more than Wolverine who needed a nice little kick into high gear, as it's been a while since there's been a really focused direction for one of Marvel's most iconic characters.

Now, we're going to get what could be the most promising WOLVERINE comic in many years, and I personally cannot wait.

Everything I've read in the initial advances of this really peg it as an amazing read, and bring back that kind of excitement, and cutting edge suspense that the original WOLVERINE series featured back in the day.

Featuring the art of the incredibly talented FRANK CHO, SAVAGE WOLVERINE starts with Wolverine awaking to find himself transported to the Savage Land and labeled public enemy number one.

With no memory of how he got there, and Shanna the She-Devil as his only ally, Logan must unravel the mystery that slumbers at the very heart of the Savage Land before it finds a way to kill him first.

Beautiful women. Giant dinosaurs. And, of course, Wolverine.

What more could you ask for ? This one is a MUST-READ, Third Eye Faithful. Snag yourself a copy this Wednesday.

SAGA #9 -- Third Eye's favorite series of 2012 Continues this Wednesday! Get on board now! PLUS issue #7 back in stock!
Man, every month, I never get sick of talking about how much we love SAGA here at Third Eye. And, that's after 9 straight issues of awesomeness; it's still just as exciting as it was when we finished issue #1.

Seriously, one of THE best comics on the stands today, SAGA got our vote as the Best Comic of 2012, and we know it'll continue to keep us hooked in 2013.

One of our favorite characters, the Stalk, looks to be returning in this week's #9, and hot damn, we're pretty stoked.

While spoilers mean a lot in this series, so we're keeping mum, we'll say this: issue #9 may be our favorite issue of teh series yet.

What's SAGA all about? Saga is the sweeping tale of one young family fighting to find their place in the worlds. When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe. Fantasy and sci-fi are wed like never before in a sexy, subversive drama for adults in the pages of SAGA.

It's stunning, it's well-crafted, it's just freakin' great. We love the book, and we know you will too.

Imagine JOSS WHEDON's FIREFLY or SERENITY mixed with A GAME OF THRONES, and that sums up the tone and feel of SAGA nicely.

Wanna get on board? We've got issues 1-8 in stock now to catch you up to this week's #9, or you can snag the first trade paperback (collecting 1-6) and then catch up with 7-9 this Wednesday.

BATMAN #16 -- THE DEATH OF THE FAMILY BRINGS A FINAL SHOWDOWN BETWEEN BATMAN AND THE JOKER... IN ARKHAM ASYLUM!
You don't need us to tell you how great the BATMAN: DEATH OF THE FAMILY arc by SCOTT SNYDER and GREG CAPULLO has been; you've been hearing us rave about this for many, many months now.

But, we're going to say it again: hot damn, this is good comics!

In DEATH OF THE FAMILY, Batman heads into his showdown with The Joker as the madman's plan is finally revealed -- in ARKHAM ASYLUM.

This penultimate chapter of the vicious RETURN OF THE JOKER arc that Snyder & Capullo have been crafting takes things into even more disturbing territory, and clues us in more to the motivations of the Clown Prince of Crime.

ALL NEW X-MEN #6 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, CONTINUING THE BEST DAMN X-TITLE WE'VE READ IN MANY, MANY YEARS!
ALL NEW X-MEN arrives this Wednesday keeping the red hot streak of awesomeness that has been this comic going, and folks, this issue is freakin' AWESOME.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis has really taken the X-Universe by the reigns, and began redefining it piece by piece. We've been loving every second of this new MARVEL NOW title, and damn, he is telling the kind of X-MEN stories we've been waiting for!

Focusing on the original team coming back from the past and into the present, only to find themselves horrified and disgusted by what awaits them; Bendis brings a compelling and interesting new dynamic to the X-Men books.

Fantastic artwork matches up with a tight story that keeps you interested from start to finish, and things continue to get even more exciting as we see the further adventures of young Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel explored.

IMAGE DELIVERS A SERIOUS CONTESTANT FOR BEST GRAPHIC NOVEL OF 2013 WITH THIS WEDNESDAY'S "THE ONE TRICK RIP OFF + DEEP CUTS" by Third Eye Favorite PAUL POPE!
Not familiar with POPE? Allow us to enlighten you to this incredible indie comix legend!

Folks, I'm really excited about this book. I don't get nearly enough excuses to talk about one of my all-time favorite artists, Paul Pope, so when I saw this was coming out, I nearly flipped my lid.

I'd categorize Pope as one of my top 5 favorite comic artists of all time, and the One Trick Rip-Off is the perfect graphic novel to introduce you to his work.

With a style so unique, and so different that it feels like something from another planet; Pope's organic, and seemless art lures you into his stories, creating a literal virtual reality out of the comic you're reading. He's so good at making his worlds fully-realized that you can almost see these images moving; it's a very cinematic experience, but in that special kind of way that is unique to sequential art.

In ONE TRICK RIP OFF, young lovers Tubby and Vim want to escape - escape the mistakes they've made, the lives they've lived, and the dirty city weighing them down. Their plan is simple - all they have to do is rip-off Tubby's pals, the One Tricks - the toughest street gang in LA.

If they pull it off, they're set for life. If not, their lives won't matter much anyway. What was going to be a smooth, straight-forward heist becomes a fast-paced battle to the death.

One Trick Rip Off is nearly 300 pages of raw power, and the DEEP CUTS section of the book features rare, new, and never before seen stories creatured during Pope's time traveling the world in the '90s. This includes the SUPERTROUBLE manga that Pope created for Kodansha in Japan.

Pure, kinetic, and over-the-top... Paul Pope is a master of the form, and we're totally honored to put this book in your hands this week. Make sure you snag your copy on Wednesday.

THRESHOLD #1 -- SPINNING OUT OF GREEN LANTERN NEW GUARDIANS ANNUAL, The DCU goes COSMIC!
Introducing THE HUNTED, spinning directly out of this month's GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS ANNUAL #1, THRESHOLD features a NEW 52 gallery of space heroes: The Star Rovers, Star Hawkins, Space Cabbie, Tom Tomorrow, Captain K'Rot.. and Star Ranger.

Okay, Third Eye Faithful, I'm gonna be honest, I really have no idea who Tom Tomorrow is, but all I know is that this book has some sick, sick Tom Raney art, and features Larfleeze, and that's good enough for me. Plus, Space Cabbie has me intrigued.

Starring Jediah caul, a disgraced Green Lantern, stripped of his power ring, and now hunted for sport on reality TV shows, THRESHOLD looks to be featuring a who's who of DC Cosmic characters, and building some interesting new plots in the process.

TRANSFORMERS SPOTLIGHT: THUNDERCRACKER ONE-SHOT SHOWCASES THE CULT FAVORITE TRANSFORMER

Man, IDW does a really awesome job with their TRANSFORMER comics. I have to give them props, and their TRANSFORMERS SPOTLIGHT one-shots are always a blast, as it gives a chance for fan-favorite Autobots and Decepticons to shine.

In the dark days of the war for Cybertron, THUNDERCRACKER had a special mission -- one never revealed before! Now, as he faces off against Bumblebee for the first time, the fate of Metroplex -- and an entire civilization -- is at stake.

Totally fun, with some great artwork, this is a must for any TF fan.

AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #16 -- A NEW DIRECTION FOR THE TITLE MAKES THIS A GREAT COMPANION SERIES TO "SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN". Picture: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM UP!
New creative team! New direction! SCARLET SPIDER writer CHRIS YOST and DEADPOOL artist PACO MEDINA begin a brand new direction for AVENGING SPIDER-MAN with this week's issue #16.

The book now acts almost as a companion series to SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, featuring the first encounters that the NEW Spider-Man has with iconic Marvel characters... and we love it.

What a cool idea; a take on Spider-Man Team-Up... but with the brain of Doc Ock in the Wallcrawler's body? The results are pretty entertaining.

JAMES STOKOE'S SULLIVANS SLUGGERS ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY AT THIRD EYE! LIMITED DISTRIBUTION! GET YOUR'S FAST! THIS BOOK IS GORGEOUS! SLIPCASE, FREE PRINT, THE WORKS!
Imagine THE BASEBALL FURIES in BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA!

Sullivan's Sluggers is something I've been eagerly awaiting for quite some time now, and folks: it's finally here, and it's freakin' gorgeous.

You guys know that we're all big fans of JAMES STOKOE (ORC STAIN, GODZILLA HALF CENTURY WAR, WONTON SOUP) here at Third Eye, right? So, when we saw he was bringing his incredible artwork to a story that pretty much reads like THE WARRIORS Baseball Furies gang getting into mayhem with the cast of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, well, we knew it'd be awesome.

And, awesome it is.. this massive, oversized hardcover graphic novel, brings Stokoe's art to life in a major way. Heck, it's a pretty book too -- thick paperstock, a gorgeous slipcase, and even a free print: the presentation definitely matches the content.

What's it all about? Long past their former glory, the minor league Sluggers get an invitation to play a baseball game in a cursed small town. After the 7th inning stretch, the sun goes down, and the dysfunctional teammates find themselves fighting for their lives against a town of flesh-eating monsters.

Now, it's up to coach Casey Sullivan to put down the booze, step up to the proverbial plate, and help his team escape from being the next dish in the town's terrifying feeding frenzy.

Gory, over-the-top, humorous, and compelling, SULLIVAN'S SLUGGERS is a MUST-HAVE. Trust us: when you see the book in store this week, you will want it.

Take note, this graphic novel is NOT available via regular distribution channels, and the initial copies we've received may be all we will have on this one for a while, so make sure you snag your's fast.

INVINCIBLE VOL.17 WHAT'S HAPPENING TRADE PAPERBACK ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY -- ROBERT KIRKMAN, writer of WALKING DEAD, continues to impress with his compelling take on the superhero genre

The new INVINCIBLE will not back down, will not give in, and he's not going to play nice. What happens when Mark Grayson isn't happy with his replacement?

Folks, INVINCIBLE is by far, one of the best damn comics on the stands, and it's no surprise, ya know? It's written by WALKING DEAD creator ROBERT KIRKMAN, and carries the same kind of character depth, cliffhanger endings, and fearless storytelling that WALKING DEAD does.

What's it all about? Picture this: your dad's Superman, and he's secretly been sent here to take over Earth for his planet. You're not down with his plans for that, or for you, and the two of you end up duking it out, to near death.

With your father's disappearance, you're left to be the guardian he once was, while shouldering the every day normal stress of growing up.

This is the story of INVINCIBLE, and we LOVE it.

Wanna get into it? We've got the first volume of the series in stock now to get you on board, and it's available in a few different formats, including ULTIMATE edition hardcovers, and a gorgeous oversized LIBRARY edition.

NEW AVENGERS #2 CONTINUES JONATHAN HICKMAN'S INCREDIBLE LOOK AT THE ILLUMINATI OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE!
NEW AVENGERS #1 totally impressed us, as it set up a very cool companion series to the flagship AVENGERS title, and we're totally eager to see where things are heading in this week's issue #2.

The ILLUMINATI gather to plan for the death of... well, EVERYTHING. Infinity gems, old wounds, lies, agendas, and universal incursions... you know, standard stuff for these guys, right?

Are we trying to play tight-lipped about what happens in this killer issue? You bet. It's a good one, and we don't want to ruin the surprise which we guarantee you will love.

Featuring writer JONATHAN HICKMAN, of MANHATTAN PROJECTS, FANTASTIC FOUR, and AVENGERS, with art by the uber-talented STEVE EPTING, NEW AVENGERS is the dark side of the Marvel Universe, and focuses on the power players of Marvel who must do whatever it takes to keep the galaxy safe.

FABLES VOL.18 CUBS IN TOYLAND ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, CONTINUING THIS THIRD EYE FAVORITE
In these tales from FABLES #114-#121, a harrowing epic starts when Snow and Bigby's cub Therese receives a Christmas gift from an unknown admirer.

This red plastic boat may hold the key to a deep, disturbing secret that will incite a series of soul-crushing events for the denizens of FABLETOWN.

Fables continues to impress, with it's 18th volume bringing the series back to the roots of what made us love it in the first place.  A fantastic, cutting edge modern fantasy adventure that re-invents, and redefines the fairy tales we all know so well.

If you've never read the series before, we cannot recommend it enough, and highly recommend snaggin volume 1: LEGENDS IN EXILE.

What's FABLES about?
In the same vein as best-selling "fractured-fairy-tales" such as Wicked and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is Bill Willingham's runaway hit graphic novel series FABLES.
No longer just children's tales, Willingham has created a new world for these beloved fables...one that exists within our own. When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile.
Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society-within an exclusive luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side-called Fabletown.
But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Bigby, Fabletown's sheriff, and a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the culprit is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #3 -- RICK REMENDER & JOHN ROMITA JR CONTINUE TO MAKE PURE COMIC MAGIC WITH THEIR NEW POST-APOCALYPTIC, STARFARING TAKE ON CAP!
Dude: Rick Remender is DESTROYING on CAPTAIN AMERICA, and we mean that in the very best way. This book is our favorite take on Cap in quite some time, and we are so pumped to see the direction it's heading next.

Featuring a very psychotronic, over-the-top direction, Remender and Romita JR bring the kind of energy and imagination to Cap that we haven't seen since the days of JACK KIRBY.

Stranded on an alien planet known only as DIMENSION Z, the fate of a world hinges on the victory of Captain America as he faces the barbarian lord of the Phrox.

Meanwhile, Arnim Zola's plans move forward, cursing Steve Rogers for years to come.

Words cannot describe how great this book is turning out, just get issues 1-3 and find out why we're in love with this.

HULK: AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D continues, and folks, we're telling you: even if you've never been a big HULK fan before, YA NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!
Imagine this: Banner volunteers his scientific genius to S.H.I.E.L.D, and along with it, he offers up the HULK aspect of himself as a living weapon for the cause.

In return: he gets paid, and gets funded to do what he does, and all those things he's done as the HULK that've landed him on Most Wanted Lists? They're removed from the record.

Now, when SHIELD comes across a threat that's a bit too big for them to handle, say, a stray frost giant wandering through the Antarctic, or an alien warlord in hiding... what'd they do?

They drop a HULK on it.

In this week's issue #3, Hulk's first official mission begins: take down the All-New Quintronic Man!

IMAGE DEBUTS A FANTASTIC NEW SERIES WITH TODD THE UGLIEST KID ON EARTH #1 THIS WEDNESDAY
You know, any time there's a new IMAGE series on the horizon, we've gotta show it some love, 'cause they deliver quality nine times out of 10, and dammit: TODD THE UGLIEST KID ON EARTH is ridiculously awesome.
This series, a collision of comedy, sex and violence, follows the misadventures of America's most dysfunctional family as they go head-to-severed head with an Oprah-loving ax murderer, a cult-crazy soap opera star, and a neo-Nazi prison gang.
In issue #1, Todd wants desperately to make friends, but every kid he approaches winds up decapitated. Or worse.
Meanwhile, Todd's mother is on a mission to get even with her husband who she believes is having an affair.
Totally unique, totally surreal, and totally compelling, TODD THE UGLIEST KID ON EARTH is the kind of unique, and fun read we love seeing from IMAGE.
