This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 2/27/13

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #0.1 KICKS OFF GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY THIS WEDNESDAY IN A CRUCIAL PROLOGUE!
Written by ALL NEW X-MEN scribe BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS and featuring art by OLD MAN LOGAN artist STEVE MCNIVEN
Guardians of the Galaxy makes it's triumphant return to the MARVEL UNIVERSE with a new twist courtesy of MARVEL NOW.

This fresh start is the perfect place to jump on board what is going to be one of the most exciting flagship Marvel titles to debut this year.

And, with the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie on the way, you know that Marvel is pulling out ALL THE STOPS to make this book a MUST-READ.

From what we've already read of the book, it's an incredible debut, and probably the first time we've ever been THIS excited about the Guardians of the Galaxy (don't get me wrong, the Abnett / Lanning run is still a classic!).

Bendis does a fantastic job of taking characters that little is known about, and building a tapestry of strong origins and fascinating character traits to deliver the kind of compelling storytelling and world-building that we've come to love out of his ALL NEW X-MEN series.

Steve McNiven's art looks incredible here, as he brings some of his best stuff since OLD MAN LOGAN to the page, and the combination of great art and solid storytelling makes this book a must-read.

We don't want to give away too much in terms of spoilers, but what we can say is that the series very much has a 'A GAME OF THRONES' meets the Marvel Universe and a little bit of FIREFLY in there.

In the first issue, we're shown quickly that it's time to move over, Avengers: the Guardians got this.

Star-Lord. Gamora. Drax. Rocket Raccoon. Groot.. and the INVINCIBLE IRON MAN?

In this special prelude issue, meet the man behind the Guardians: Star-Lord.. and discover how this child of Earth became the ledaer of the rag-taggiest of teams in all the Galaxy.

All setting the stage for something that we can only say will be.. INFINITE-ly awesome.

This is the start of something big, Third Eye Faithful.

FIVE WEAPONS #1 DEBUTS FROM IMAGE COMICS THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING AN EXCITING NEW GEM WITH A UNIQUE NEW CONCEPT
A High School for Assassins?
IMAGE has been knocking them out of the park lately, with several of their newer series really blowing us away in terms of both storytelling and artwork.

Not to mention the fact that a ton of their books have been blowing up on the secondary market, and turning into instant classics, like NOWHERE MEN, PETER PANZERFAUST, SNAPSHOT, and DIA DE LOS MUERTOS.

This week, IMAGE drops one we're personally very excited about with the arrival of FIVE WEAPONS #1.

In issue #1, Tyler finds himself in a specialized school where assassins send their kids for education and training in one of the five deadly weapons. Tyler doesn't have a weapon or any fighting skills, but he still plans to graduate by beating every weapon master in the school because he has a powerful ability that nobody can match: his smarts!

This first issue was a blast, and is a great mix of the coming-of-age drama and humor we find in INVINCIBLE and MORNING GLORIES with the over-the-top grue and violence of KILL BILL.

Snag yourself a copy this Wednesday!

AQUAMAN #17 - THE EPILOGUE TO THRONE OF ATLANTIS, AND THE START OF A NEW ARC!
You guys know by now that we're totally hooked on Geoff Johns's incredible revival of the once-underutilized AQUAMAN.

The writing, and the artwork on this book have been top notch since issue #1, and they're just getting better and better with each and every subsequent issue.

This week, in AQUAMAN #17, we're shown a startling epilogue that shows Aquaman confronted by a horrible myth from Atlantis's past that is connected to his own.

Now, with the secrets of Atlantis revealed, a new era begins for the King of the Seas.

Jump on board what's easily one of the best 5 monthly DCU titles on the stands with this Wednesday's AQUAMAN #17.

LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE #3 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING ANOTHER BRUTAL, UNRELENTING CHAPTER OF ONE OF OUR FAVORITE SERIES
The LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE, is by far, one of our favorite reads this year, following up on the totally kick-ass STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE from 2011/2012.

This comic practically explodes with raw energy, as the combination of Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore's storytelling and artwork produces one of the best damn takes on modern superhero comics we're reading.

What's the scoop on LUTHER STRODE? Picture this: your average high school comic book fan sends away for one of those fitness regimens to get himself beefed up.

Instead, he finds himself gaining superhuman strength, endurance, and speed. What's he do with these skills? What any comic fan would: he makes a costume and decides to fight crime.

What Luther didn't know is that the regimen he's practicing is actually an ancient formula to condition super-killers. An ancient art form that believes murder is what moves civilization forward, and Luther has been chosen as it's avatar.

Now, in the LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE, it's been years, and Luther still struggles with the heavy weight that makes him want to slaughter half the people he sees.

LUTHER STRODE: super-hero.. or super-slasher? That's the question asked here.

We can't give it high enough praise, Third Eye Faithful, it really is THAT good.

Wanna get caught up? We've got issues 1-3 of LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE in stock now, including the THIRD EYE variant of #1.

Want to go back further? We've got the STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE available in graphic novel format to catch you up on the origins of LUTHER STRODE.

UNCANNY X-MEN #2 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING THE SECOND EXCITING FOLLOW-UP ISSUE TO THE NEW MARVEL NOW FLAGSHIP X-TITLE!
We may think we know who the traitor on Cyclops's new team of X-Men is.. but do we really?

UNCANNY X-MEN #2 brings the return of the Sentinels... and when you find out who's pulling their strings, you're gonna flip out.

We loved the first issue of this new series, which serves as a great counter-part to the CHARLES XAVIER-influenced ALL NEW X-MEN.

Cyclops, in a post-AvX world, has not changed his mission statement one bit: he's going to protect the mutantrace by any means necessary, and if it makes him look like a villain to some, then so be it.

We love the direction of the X-Titles right now, and writer BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS is on fire, as he weaves together this title and ALL NEW X-MEN into a tight-knit, solid pair of stories that cover both ends of the X-Universe.

Chris Bachalo's art, as always, is a visual treat, and helps bring us into the story in a big way.

Highly recommended, Third Eye Faithful, if you're not yet on board with UNCANNY X-MEN, we've got issue #1 in stock now to catch you up in time for this Wednesday's #2.

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN CONTINUES COURTESY OF ALAN MOORE & KEVIN O'NEILL THIS WEDNESDAY IN NEMO: HEART OF ICE!
A MUST-READ!
Folks, I have to tell you, I am a HUGE fan of all the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-related stuff that ALAN MOORE has done over the years. I love Kevin O'Neills art. I love Moore's writing. And, the subject matter of these books, really is the best damn fit for both their talents.

So, when I saw that Moore and O'Neill would be returning to the World of League again in a new stand alone graphic novella, I pretty much flipped out.

In Nemo: Heart of Ice, it's the year 1925, fifteen long years since Janni Dakkar first tired to escape the legacy of her dying science-pirate father, only to accept her destiny as the new Nemo, captain of the legendary Nautilus.

Now, tired of her unending spree of plunder and destruction, Janni launches a grand expedition to surpass her father's greatest failure: the exploration of Antarctica.

Hot on her frozen trail are a trio of genius inventors, hired by an influential publishing tycoon to retrieve the plundered valuables of an African queen.

It's a deadly race to the bottom of the world -- an uncharted land of wonder and horror where time is broken and the mountains bring madness.

Jules Verne meets HP Lovecraft in the unforgettable final showdown, lost in the living, beating and appallingly inhuman HEART OF ICE.

Holy crap: this sounds EPIC.

For those of you unfamiliar with the LEAGUE OF EXTROARDINARY GENTLEMEN books, the concept is that Moore takes pre-existing characters from various literature and other forms of fiction, and builds new stories and worlds around them.

In the original League, we're shown that the world's first "adventure team" / "super team" was composed of a post-Dracula Mina Harker, a savage Mr. Hyde, and many others.

We've also seen interesting twists on characters, like a young and inexperienced James Bond showing his jerky misogynist side.

These are always some of the most satisfying reads on the stands, and if you've never read the LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN stuff, I'd recommend either sampling it by picking up NEMO: HEART OF ICE this week as a stand-alone, or going back and getting the first LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN trade paperback.

We currently have all of the LOEG stuff in stock and available now, for those of you who want to backtrack a bit and start from the very beginning.

CATWOMAN VOL.2 THE DOLL HOUSE ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF THE NEW 52 CATWOMAN SERIES.
The NEW 52 spin on CATWOMAN has been fantastic so far, and the first 12 issues, especially, were killer, with the creative team of JUDD WINNICK and GUILLEM MARCH delivering a very cool new take on the classic Gotham icon.

Teaming with a new partner called Spark, Catwoman is out to take Gotham City -- literally! But when Catwoman runs into Dollhouse, a psychotic who kidnaps children from the streets of Gotham City, a rage awakens in her that not even she knew existed.

UNCANNY SKULLKICKERS #1 -- Imagine 'ARMY OF DARKNESS', 'THE HANGOVER' and 'DUNGEONS & DRAGONS' rolled into one AMAZING comic!
Meet the creators JIM ZUB & EDWIN HUANG at THIRD EYE ANNAPOLIS on Saturday 3/30!
We're HUGE fans of the IMAGE series SKULLKICKERS, as it's one of the few examples of a sword-and-sorcery fantasy comic done right, and when we saw they were kicking off a brand new direction and celebrating with this special issue #1.. we knew we had to do something special to celebrate the occasion!

We're going to be hosting a special signing release party for SKULLKICKERS on 3/30 with the creators JIM ZUB and EDWIN HUANG.

Never read SKULLKICKERS? You need to be. Imagine a buddy comedy like THE HANGOVER, and then mix that with the fantasy world setting of LORD OF THE RINGS or DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. Now, throw in some bloody slapstick gore ala ARMY OF DARKNESS, and you've got yourself a very cool little read.

The artwork is incredible, and you can totally see that these guys have roots with UDON (the same guys who do all those nifty STREET FIGHTER comics, and put out all those gorgeous video game artbooks), and Zub's writing is genuinely funny and compelling.

For those of you who're big gamers, whether video games or table-top, this is the PERFECT comic for you. You know that one friend who always screws up the raid in your favorite MMORGP? Or, how about your buddy who always trashes the carefully laid out campaign and drives your DM crazy?

This is the beauty of SKULLKICKERS, Third Eye Faithful, and trust us: you will love it.

Wanna jump on board? You can start fresh with this week's UNCANNY SKULLKICKERS #1. We've also got the trade paperbacks collecting the earlier issues as well if you'd prefer to backtrack.

HAWKEYE #8 -- One of Marvel's top 3 best series continues this Wednesday -- still not reading HAWKEYE? Start this week!
Folks, remember how every month for like a year straight, we just kept telling you how great BATMAN was? We're going to do that with Hawkeye this year, 'cause dammit: it's that good.

Seriously though, jump onto this incredible book now, 'cause we're telling you in another six months to a year, these back issues are going to be as in demand as the current run of BATMAN.

HAWKEYE delivers one of the most satisfying superhero reads on the stands, with Matt Fraction's completely unique, and innovative approach to the Avenging Archer.

Combine that with the gorgeous, stylized artwork of David Aja, which is reminiscent of BATMAN YEAR ONE's DAVID MAZZUCHELLI, and you've got yourself one hell of a comic.

Each issue works very well as a nice done-in-one, or two-part story, delivering the kind of pure comic bliss that's equivalent to finding a really good 7 inch record from your favorite band's side project.

This week's #8 features Valentine's Day with THE heatthrob of the Marvel Universe.. and, folks, you know this is gonna be confusing with the way that Clint Barton tends to run around.

Hawkeye ranks up there with SAGA as the definition of what we love in good comics. Get into it!

BONGO UNVEILS ANOTHER SIMPSONS ONE-SHOT WITH PROFESSOR FRINK'S FANTASTIC SCIENCE FICTIONS THIS WEDNESDAY!
We have a real soft spot for the awesomeness that is BONGO COMICS and their FUTURAMA and SIMPSONS offerings, and we especially dig the little one-shots they do from time to time.

This Wednesday, we're getting one that looks too amazing to be true: a freakin' PROFESSOR FRINK solo tale? We love it!

Seriously, in PROFESSOR FRINK'S FANTASTIC SCIENCE FICTIONS... you'll get plenty of GLAVIN! as Springfield's mad scientist, John Frink, creates a 'Cool Formula' that gets accidentally dumped into the Springfield reservoir, turning every resident of Springfield into a swinging '60s Vegas-style hipster.

Then, Frink's study of the beloved three-eyed fish, Blinky, results in a plague of biblical proportions.

Folks, you know you need this in your life.

TALON #5 -- THE COURT OF OWLS, AND DEATH OF THE FAMILY SPREADS FALLOUT THROUGH GOTHAM
Scott Snyder's run on his COURT OF THE OWLS spin-off, TALON, continues to impress as this week's issue explores th fallout from DEATH OF THE FAMILY, and continues to delve deeper into the connections that the Court of the Owls has.

In this issue, it's Talon vs. Felix Harmon aka the Gotham Ripper.

The bank heist goes wrong. Really wrong. Who will make it out alive -- and who is already dead?

The Talon's secret hideout is in danger.. and so are all the people in it.

If you loved BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS, Third Eye Faithful, you'll dig the hell out of TALON, as it focuses on the only Talon to break away from the Court, and his mission to avoid falling back into their clutches.

Wanna get caught up? We've got issues 1-4 in stock now to catch you up for Wednesday's #5.

ZENESCOPE TAKES US THROUGH A VERY DARK LOOKING GLASS, IN THEIR NEW SERIES: THE MADNESS OF WONDERLAND #1 THIS WEDNESDAY
Zenescope has wowed us in the past with their ALICE IN WONDERLAND mini-series, and their RETURN TO WONDERLAND trilogy, now, they're taking a brand new journey through the Looking Glass, in what may be the most horrific WONDERLAND series yet.

As the flower girls from Wonderland continue to claim their victims, Calie struggles with finding a way to snap Violet out of her downward spiral.

But when Violent meets a new friend who seems to be the answer to all Calie's prayers, they will both learn first-hand that even the best of friends can carry their own deep, dark secrets.

Meanwhile, in Wonderland, the hunt for the Red Queen and the suicide king continues as they arrive at the Temple of Purity, where even the madness of Wonderland may not enter.

THE UNCANNY X-FORCE CONTINUES... BISHOP. VS X-FORCE! In this week'sUNCANNY X-FORCE #2
Folks, we loved the first issue of Sam Humphries's brand new UNCANNY X-FORCE, and we're totally pumped to see the direction the book is taking in this week's issue #2.

There's a very distinct tone in this title, a very kinetic, high action and adventure, space-faring kinda feel that is reminiscent of the Starjammers era of the X-Men, and we really, really dig it.

Keeping the same hard edge that the original UNCANNY X-FORCE did, the new MARVEL NOW Uncanny X-Force features the kind of line-up you'd like to have at your next Marvel vs. Capcom tournament.

Spiral. Puck. Psylocke. Lady Fantomex. Storm. That's a hell of a team, right?

And, who's their nemesis? Who're they up against? The one and only BISHOP!

What secret does the man with the M on his face bring from the future, and why do they put him at odds with the UNCANNY X-FORCE?

UNCANNY AVENGERS #4 -- THOR GONE MAD!
We've been totally loving the UNCANNY AVENGERS, with UNCANNY X-FORCE: THE DARK ANGEL SAGA and FEAR AGENT scribe RICK REMENDER delivering an amazing take on the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

The addition of John Cassaday on art also doesn't hurt one bit, as he delivers a crisp, and iconic look for the team.

In the aftermath of AvX, Cap has decided that a more unified approach is needed, so he merges the X-Men and the Avengers into one team: the Uncanny Avengers.

Consisting of Rogue, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Captain America, Wolverine and led by Havok, the UNCANNY AVENGERS are a demonstration of the X-Men and the Avengers coming together after their epic war in AvX.

In this week's issue #4, we see some new recruits, with THE WASP, WONDER MAN and SUNFIRE joining the team... just in time for the Grim Reaper (who is such a cool villain) to enact his revenge.

Now, tension builds as Havok's leadership is questioned... and the death of a major character at hte hands of an Avenger in broad daylight casts a shadow on the team as a whole.

Oh, and did we mention Thor's gone crazy? :)

GAMBIT #9 CONTINUES TO DELIVER THE BEST TAKE WE'VE SEEN ON THE RAGIN' CAJUN IN A LONG TIME!
The new GAMBIT ongoing series that James Asmus (THIEF OF THIEVES) and Clay Mann have been doing has been a really kick-ass read, right from the start, and we're pretty pumped to see where the series is heading next in this week's issue #9.

With Gambit hot on the heels of the lady thief who first crossed his path in issue #1, the question of the secret she's hiding may just spell doom for our hero.

And, oh, he also has to figure out how to steal her away from the horde of super-villains she's surrounded herself with.

RON MARZ & STJEPAN SEJIC DELIVER A KILLER STAND-ALONE GRAPHIC NOVEL OF SWORD & SORCERY AWESOMENESS WITH RAVINE VOL.1 THIS WEDNESDAY
THIS BOOK IS GORGEOUS! Seriously, Sejic's artwork is a freakin' treat, and an astonishing example of what you can do when you blend traditional art with digital artwork.

In RAVINE, we're taken to a fantastic world far from our own, where an ancient magic spell almost split the world in two and left an endless ravine in the north.

One man, Nebezial Asheri, driven by the deaths of his wife and daughters will attempt to reclaim that magic and bring his loved ones back to life.

The forces of an entire city, Paladia, will rise to oppose him, but his greatest foes will be a ragtag band of an outcast wizard, a dragonrider, and their allies.

YOUNG AVENGERS #2 KEEPS IMPRESSING WITH THE FRESHEST NEW MARVEL BOOK WE'VE READ IN AGES!
We completely and totally dug the debut issue of YOUNG AVENGERS, and you know what? We knew would, 'cause KIERON GILLEN absolutely kicked ass on last year's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY.

In this week's issue  #2, we're going to see some crazy stuff go down in what has gotta be one of the raddest takes on the teenage superhero team that we've seen in quite some time.

Has Wiccan made a horrible mistake that comes back to bite everyone on their communal posteriors? Yes.

Does this issue guest star the Uncanny Avengers? Yes.

A figure from Loki's past emerges. Friend? Foe? We're guessing Foe.
