THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS 4/29/09!

DARK AVENGERS #4 - Norman Osborn Shuffles The Team Roster In Marvel's Biggest Ongoing Series!

Has all the Dark Reign stuff been cool or what? We're loving what Marvel's been doing with the books, and all across the board, there's a huge increase in quality on most of their ongoing series. The biggest enjoyment for us when it comes to reading our new comics has been Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato Jr's DARK AVENGERS series. The simple concept of despicable Marvel characters, and gray area characters making up the Earth's Mightiest Heroes has us coming back for more, and more.
In this week's issue, we get to see the final outcome of the battle between the Dark Avengers and Morgana Le Fay, and big decisions are made in regards to who will stay and who will go on the Dark Avengers! Click here to read more about DARK AVENGERS #4!

DARK REIGN: THE CABAL - Crucially awesome, and important one-shot in regards to DARK REIGN!

Not since the original DARK REIGN one-shot that kicke.d off this whole sinister shebang has there been a more important piece of the DARK REIGN puzzle. Lets face it, one of the coolest aspects of this entire shift in Marvel's stories has been the figureheads. Namor The Sub-Mariner. Norman Osborn the Green Goblin. Emma Frost the White Queen. Loki the Trickster God(dess). Doctor Doom. The Hood. These characters are all immensely cool in their own rights, and to see them united in a reverse of the Illuminati (composed of influential Marvel heroes) is pretty awesome. This week, DARK REIGN: Cabal, explores the motives and actions of the Cabal and their influence on the Marvel universe as a whole. And, best of all, it's got one heck of a team of creators working on it: rising star Jonathan Hickman (who's currently doing SECRET WARRIORS), the red-hot Matt Fraction, and artists Adi Granov and Kyle Hotz. Do not miss this one, folks! Click here to read a preview of DARK REIGN: THE CABAL!

GREEN LANTERN #40 AGENT ORANGE CHAPTER 2 CONTINUES THE ROAD TO BLACKEST NIGHT!!

By far, the biggest DC Comics storyline of this year is going to be BLACKEST NIGHT. However, if you haven't been reading the GREEN LANTERN books for the last couple years, then you are missing out on some fine comic book storytelling. The Green Lantern books have been consistently the best reads month after month for DC, and as anticipation builds for BLACKEST NIGHT, more and more people are noticing this. The current story arc, AGENT ORANGE (the color orange representing greed), has us on the edge of our seats, and we were wondering how they'd follow things up after RAGE OF THE RED LANTERNS. With the Blackest Night #0 Prelude book hitting the shelves this weekend for Free Comic Book Day, now's the perfect time to hop aboard the Green Lantern titles. Just snag up a copy of GREEN LANTERN #39, which is the beginning of the current arc. Trust us, this is all leading into the big event, BLACKEST NIGHT, and the quality is some of the highest we've seen from either publisher in a very long time. THE BOYS writer GARTH ENNIS DEBUTS BRAND NEW BATTLEFIELDS SERIES, BATTLEFIELDS: TANKIESTHIS WEDNESDAY!

Garth Ennis has won us all over with his modern classic, PREACHER, and he continues to do so every month with THE BOYS. Lets be honest, pretty much everything Ennis puts his pen to, we tetnd to enjoy here at Third Eye. One genre he works especially well in is war comics. He brings his own unique blend of ultraviolence, shock humor, and yes, heartfelt storytelling combined with his own personal love and enthusiasm for war stories to the page, and well, it's the best war comic you're ever gonna read, bar none. The man just GETS IT. The new series beginning this week, Tankies, features a lone squad of tank crew, stranded behind enemy lines during the Battle of Normandy. Trust us, it's everything you love about an Ennis comic (the blood, the sharp dialogue, the wit, the storytelling) applied to a good old fashioned war story. THUNDERBOLTS #131 CONCLUDES THE DEADPOOL/THUNDERBOLTS CROSSOVER "MAGNUM OPUS" THIS WEDNESDAY!

The raddest mini-crossover of 2009 so far has been the big Thunderbols vs. Deadpool story arc, Magnum Opus. Concluding this week in the pages of THUNDERBOLTS #131, it's sure to be one hell of a finale. As one of the most violent, dysfunctional superteams goes head to head with the Marvel universe's most dysfunctional Killer for Hire. We can't wait to see how this one ends out. FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #4ARRIVES AFTER LONG AWAIT THIS WEEK! THE BEST FINAL CRISIS-RELATED BOOK YOU'LL READ!

The biggest of the FINAL CRISIS tie-ins was, and is, definitely LEGION OF THREE WORLDS. It's a shame that it's been hit with such a severe case of lateness, but, we have to say, we're still pumped to see what's gonna be happening in the next issue of Legion of Three Worlds. Geoff Johns and George Perez have made this into a must-read, and apparently, the events in this series will have ramifications on the DCU as a whole for years to come. I know, I know, a lot of you are probably saying "Well, that's great, Steve, but.. I'm just not a Legion fan." Trust us, this book makes the Legion of Superheroes cool again. It's getting close. The grand conclusion to this brutal bloodbath of a battle between Wolverine and Hulk. Here's a look at what we've seen already: a startling new origin of She-Hulk, Wolverine getting ripped into two pieces, his torso being tossed 7 miles away from his legs, the Hulk and his harem of women built into a Tibetan mountainside. BATTLE FOR THE COWL BRINGS ON THE BAD GUYS THIS WEEK WITH BATTLE FOR THE COWL: THE UNDERGROUND SPOTLIGHTING BATMAN'S ROGUES GALLERY!!

First off, if you didn't pick up Battle for the Cowl: Arkham Asylum yet... DO IT! It was actually a very good one-shot, and introduced some very cool new Rogues into Batman's Rogues Gallery. Secondly, you have GOT to scope out the Battle for the Cowl Underground one-shot this week which spotlights all of your favorite classic Batman rogues. Penguin, Riddler, Harley Quinn, Ras Al Ghul, Two-Face, and more are all here. There's no Batman to stop them now, but are they going to fight amongst themselves or work together to take control of Gotham City? We're guessing the former. SHERLOCK HOLMES #1 ADDS AN EDGE TO THE CLASSIC DETECTIVE WITH NEW SERIES!

I'm sorry, but the cover for this new Sherlock Holmes series just looks friggin' cool. This new series from Dynamite looks fantastic. It seems like they're going to be giving i the same kind of modern comic storytelling treatment they've given to classic pulp and literary characters like Lone Ranger, Zorro, and Red Sonja. The thing that looks cool though, is we're going to be getting a solid, dripping in Victorian flavor kind of tale with this, and the aesthetic and stylization of the comic have us pretty stoked to see how it is. THIRD EYE SPOTLIGHT: YOUNG LIARS

I'm sure it's obvious that we read a lot of comics here at Third Eye. And, while we're always here to give you guys the scoop on what's new, and what's coming out, we want to start spotlighting some series that have been already coming out for a bit that we're really digging. This week, we're gonna be giving some very well-deserved press to the amazing Vertigo series YOUNG LIARS by David Lapham. Lapham got me hooked when I was real young with his dark, indie crime hit STRAY BULLETS. It was one of my all-time favorites (and man, I really wish they'd put the trades back into print), and while he'd done stuff since then, nothing ever came close to the caliber of comic awesomeness that was Stray Bullets. That is, nothing until YOUNG LIARS. Young Liars is a story about a group of friends, an anorexic model, a spoiled party girl, a rich boy always trying to get rich quick, a drag queen with a drug habit, and then the two main focuses, Sadie and her boyfriend Danny. Sadie's the daughter of a billionaire Brown Bag Corporation (think WAL-MART) owner, and from the get-go, we learn that she's indestructible. Reckless, and a little off, a bullet that was lodged in her brain has completely thrown her fight or flight sense out of whack. Her boyfriend, who we find out through the course of the story caused her injury, is a pathetic yet lovable slob who Sadie wouldn't have given the time of day until her injury. Now, she's in love with him, because he says so. Sound twisted? I haven't even gotten to the Spiders from Mars, the Pinkerton goons working for her father, and the rest of the craziness.
The book is crammed full of energy, and excitement. It's truly a rock'n'roll kind of comic, and it's energy is infectious. Third Eye highly recommends giving the first trade a go if you're looking for something fun, over-the-top, and a consistently good monthly read. Not to mention Lapham's artwork fits the story perfectly, and makes the book even more of a fun read. The real bummer? It's going to end at issue #18. Clickhere to read more about YOUNG LIAR
