This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 7/24/13

THE NEW ONGOING UPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP #1 IMPRESSES THE HECK OUT OF US, AND DELIVERS EVEN MORE SUPERIOR SPIDEY AWESOMENESS THAN WE THOUGHT POSSIBLE!

We've been loving all the new Superior Spidey-related stuff coming out of Superior Spidey month this July, but we have to say: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP is, by far, the cream of the crop.

There's a twist on this one... and it's so freakin' cool, so darn neat, that we don't want to give it away here. All we'll say is that when you see what it is your response will only be "well, that makes perfect sense."

Chris Yost, who's no stranger to the Spidey books, with his stellar runs on series like SCARLET SPIDER, does an incredible job here in making the book unique, relevant, and strong in it's own identity separate from the regular SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN ongoing.

In issue #1, we're taken across the entire Marvel Universe, as Superior Spider-Man goes against heroes and foes you wouldn't necessary think he'd rub shoulders with.

As more and more people begin to sense a change in Spider-Man, he realizes that his only defense is a good offense... and perhaps, he needs his own Team-Up allies who're on the same page as he is.

Sharp storytelling with crisp, energetic artwork make Superior Spider-Man Team-Up a must-read, and we cannot wait to see where this series goes next.

THE TRINITY WAR CONTINUES WITH JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #22 THIS WEDNESDAY, AS THE ROAD TO VILLAINS MONTH CONTINUES!

Man, we are so hooked on the TRINITY WAR stuff, it's not even funny. This crucial event that leads up to the upcoming VILLAINS MONTH event for DC, where the entire DCU is put under the control of it's most hardcore bad guys, has been incredible.

Imagine Marvel's CIVIL WAR but with the icons of the DC Universe at war with one another.

League against League, and of course, there's some serious manipulation going on from everyone's favorite bad guys.

In the first chapter, things get off to an insane start as Superman uses his heat vision to do what Superman had never done before: kill.

In an act of impulsive defense, he grabbed Doctor Light, and literally incinerated the character's head in one zap... and thus, began the TRINITY WAR.

Now, with loyalties in question, and the nature of metahumans being seen as a threat by many, the heroes of the DCU are at war with one another in a major way.

In this week's third chapter, a member of the Justice League defects to the mysterious, occultism-fueled JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, but what does Constantine know about this murder that he isn't telling? And what dark secret does one of our Leaguers hold that could turn the tide of this Justice League War?

HUNGER #1 -- IN THE FALLOUT OF AGE OF ULTRON, AND ON THE ROAD TO INFINITY, COMES THE WORLD-EATER HIMSELF.. GALACTUS: ON A MISSION TO DEVOUR THE MARVEL MULTIVERSE! 

As the Marvel Multiverse began to emerge in the final chapters of AGE OF ULTRON, something.. interesting.. occured: the World-Eater himself made a grand return, and this time, he's set to do more than just devour worlds, he's out to consume entire universes.

Galactus has always been one of the coolest Marvel bad guys, and in the limited series, HUNGER, which ties into the upcoming INFINITY event, we see him taking on a role very similar to that of the Anti-Monitor in the DCU, as he tears a vicious path through the various Marvel realities... and consumes each one.

We, of course, know that one of those universes is the long-running ULTIMATE universe... could this be the end days of the ULTIMATE line, or will this be where we see characters from the Ultimate Universe merge into the regular 616 Marvel realm?

Either way, this book looks fantastic, and we cannot wait to see the direction it's heading this Wednesday.

BATMAN / SUPERMAN #2 -- THE KILLER NEW TEAM-UP TITLE EXPLORING THE VERY FIRST MEETING OF BATMAN AND SUPERMAN IN THE NEW 52 CONTINUES!

Featuring the incredible artwork of JAE LEE!

We totally loved the first issue of BATMAN / SUPERMAN with PLANET HULK writer GREG PAK and BEFORE WATCHMEN OZYMANDIAS artist JAE LEE combining together to do an incredible job.

Now, we're stoked to see where the second issue of this exciting new ongoing series is taking us, as the earliest meeting of Batman and Superman leads them to EARTH-2, where they find familiar heroes.. who just so happen to be trying to kill them!

Folks: the storytelling on here is great, but let me tell ya: Jae Lee's art is off-the-chain, and is worth the price of admission alone.

A great, self-contained SUPERMAN and BATMAN title, we give BATMAN/SUPERMAN a high recommendation!

NIGHTWING VOL.2 NIGHT OF THE OWLS ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY, COLLECTING ISSUES 8-12 & #0 OF THE NEW 52 ONGOING NIGHTWING SERIES!

We've been totally digging the NEW 52 NIGHTWING series since it's debut, and it continues to keep us hooked with strong storytelling, and solid artwork, so it's always good news to see the next trade of the series arriving.

As part of the epic BATMAN storyline, NIGHT OF THE OWLS, this second volume, collects issues 8-12, which tied into the NIGHT OF OWLS arc running through Snyder's BATMAN.

Dick Grayson must face a deadly adversary as he learns of his own connections to the mysterious Court of Owls; but even if he can stop an undead assassin, he'll still have to deal with an anti-Gotham City army -- and the mysterious Paragon.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 -- THE TRINITY WAR BEGINS WITH CHAPTER 1 IN THIS WEDNESDAY'S JUSTICE LEAGUE #22

Third Eye Faithful, we're so pumped for TRINITY WAR, it's ridiculous. We knew we had to kick this week's newsletter off with a write-up on the event, and we cannot wait until you guys get to actually sit down and read it yourselves.

There's a ton of speculation surrounding TRINITY WAR and it's impact on the DC NEW 52... and pre-NEW 52. We're not sure what to expect, but what we do know is that TRINITY WAR will end right as Villains Month begins... and trust us: you're going to want to get in on Villains Month; it's going to be the biggest thing DC has done since the onset of the NEW 52.

So, what IS Trinity War anyway? In JUSTICE LEAGUE #22, the death of a hero ignites a violent war among the Justice Leagues.... it's League Vs. League vs. League as an impending darkness approaches the DC Universe.

But, the truth behind it all will lead to an evil that threatens every hero on the planet. And, what does the Secret Society of Super Villains have to do with this?

The answer? EVERYTHING.

That's right -- what side will iconic heroes like Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman take as they find themselves at war with their long-time friends and allies?

We haven't been this excited about a DC Universe storyline since... heck, since maybe BLACKEST NIGHT? That's how big TRINITY WAR is going to be.

Featuring GEOFF JOHNS (Aquaman, Blackest Night, Batman Earth One, and countless others) and Ivan Reis (Brightest Day, Aquaman) at the helm.... this is going to be one hell of an awesome event.

Image Comics debuts their next hit ongoing series with SHELTERED #1 this Wednesday!

Meet creators ED BRISSON & JOHNNIE CHRISTMAS at Third Eye Annapolis on Friday 9/6!

When we first saw pages from SHELTERED, we got flashbacks of our first time peeking through WALKING DEAD, CHEW, and REVIVAL. Stunning concept. Great artistic delivery. Smart dialogue. Instantly likable characters.... the book really did have it all, and then some.

What'd we do after that? Well, we hopped on the Third Eye Phone, rang up ol' Ed Brisson & his artist-in-arms, Johnnie Christmas, and said HEY. You're coming to Third Eye, and doing a crazy awesome signing with us the night before Baltimore Comic-Con..

..and luckily, they said yes. :)

So, now, here we are -- the first issue of SHELTERED drops this Wednesday, and we could not be more pumped about this new ongoing series.

There's the same kind of electricity surrounding this that books like REVIVAL, SAGA, and more had upon their launch, and we cannot wait to see how you guys like it.

What's it all about? In SHELTERED, the founders of the survivalist colony Safe Haven are sure that the end of civilization is at hand. Economic collapse, natural disaster, civil war -- they're prepared for it all in their underground compound deep in the woods of America's northeast.

But, the real kicker? The threat to their existence comes from a source they never expected: their own children.

We don't want to get too spoilery here... so we'll just say this: SHELTERED delivers something turly unique -- a pre-apocalypse tale, rather than a post-apocalypse one.. and it's darn cool.

SUPERMAN UNCHAINED 32 -- The BIGGEST Superman title in years continues with issue #2 this Wednesday. BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS writer SCOTT SNYDER & superstar BATMAN: HUSH artist JIM LEE deliver pure magic on this title!

Oh.. and Batman shows up.:)

Take two of comics biggest talents, Scott Snyder and Jim Lee, put them together on one of comics' longest running icons.. and yeah, that's a recipe for pure magic, folks.

We absolutely fell in love with issue #1 of SUPERMAN UNCHAINED, as it delivered the kind of SUPERMAN story we'd been waiting for.

I'm not going to lie, sometimes it takes a lot to make Superman cool, and hot damn, Snyder & Lee really brought it with this book.

I'm pretty happy to say that issue #2 is just as good as the debut, getting straight into the action, after the set up of issue #1.

In issue #2, the technological terrorists called Ascension are growing bolder with every attack, creating problems only Superman can solve... and that's with the help of the world's greatest detective, Batman.

But the mystery that's really got them both worried is the unknown figure that's been shadowing Superman.

SNYDER CONTINUES HIS FOLLOW UP TO COURT OF OWLS & DEATH OF THE FAMILY WITH ZERO YEAR THIS WEDNESDAY! CHECK OUT BATMAN #22 for CHAPTER 2 of ZERO YEAR!

EAST OF WEST #4 -- One of our Top 5 Favorite Monthly Series Continues this Wednesday!

EAST OF WEST continues to be one of the best damn comics on the stands, as Jonathan Hickman (PAX ROMANA, RED WING, & more) and Nick Dragotta craft the most fascinating, and compelling ongoing series we've seen since the debut of SAGA.

EAST OF WEST is a fantasy / sci-fi / western genre mash-up starring the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse... and it's awesome.

We're shown an alternate American Civil War, where the world pretty much ends before the war can end, thus causing the course of history to be changed forever.

Oh, and three of the Four Horsemen are born when the onset of the Apocalypse begins... and are in search of their fourth brother.

Fast-forward to the year 2064, and everything has changed. The country is divided into 7 Nations, and everyone is at war with everyone.

It's still very much an Old West kind of setting, but with a tech-heavy futuristic slant, with robotic horses, and saloons that serve chemically-enhanced whisky.

While the first issue is just the set-up, one thing  that we're quickly shown is that the Four Horsemen are the stars of the show here.. and, we're digging it.

Three issues in, and each issue pulls us in more and more, as we're becoming totally enraptured with the world that Hickman and Dragotta are building.

You want great art? You want great storytelling? Heck, you want a gorgeous color palette? Read this comic.

You won't be sorry.

STEVE: SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDERMAN #1 - This was a lot of fun -- very reminiscent of the current run of HAWKEYE. Love the bad guys too!

TRISH: SATELLITE SAM #1 - I loved this! Great blend of 1950s creepiness mixed with a biting sense of humor!

TORMA: WHAT IF AVX #1  - It's WHAT IF? I'm always going to love a good WHAT IF?

MATT: AVENGERS #15 - So much cool stuff coming together for INFINITY -- can't wait until this all kicks off.

SHAUN: POLARITY #4 - Great conclusion to an awesome series! Hopefully we see a sequel!

RYAN:  DEADPOOL KILLS DEADPOOL #1 - I think this might be the best of the DEADPOOL KILLS books yet.

JOHN: SATELLITE SAM #1 - An interesting look into teh 1950s filled with live TV, scandalous behavior, and a murder mystery. Needless to say this book is excellent!

LEXI: POLARITY #4 - Great ending to a great series! Loved this one all the way through!

KYLE: DEADPOOL KILLS DEADPOOL #1 - Good stuff. Can't wait for #2!
