THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 10/13/10

MARK MILLAR DEBUTS SUPERIOR #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - The writer of NEMESIS & KICK-ASS BRINGS HIS TWIST TO THE SUPERMAN ARCH-TYPE!
Fans of IRREDEEMABLE, NEMESIS, THE BOYS, and MORE MUST READ THIS!

You know if Mark Millar is behind something, then chances are, it's going to be pretty freakin' rad. We're talking about the guy who brought us OLD MAN LOGAN, the insane KICK-ASS, and most recently, the downright devious NEMESIS series.

So, what happens when this crazy Scotsman decides to give us his unique take on SUPERMAN? Well, you get SUPERIOR. And, man, I am even more stoked about this one than I was about the first issue of NEMESIS. Why? 'Cause Millar has made it loud and clear that the one character he loves more than any other is SUPERMAN. But DC COMICS would never let Millar near the big red S, 'cause well, lets face it, Millar's known for inbred Hulk families and evil Batmen that booby-trap peoples wombs.

But, that's where the kick-ass creator owned ICON imprint comes in, as it allows Millar to do whatever the hell he feels like, and tell us a kick-ass take on the classic world's most powerful man comic.

So, what is SUPERIOR all about then, huh? Well, it's the story of Ollie Janson. A boy who had it all going for him: high school popularity, a promising future playing basketball, and more. But, that was when he could still move his legs. Now, he's living with multiple sclerosis, missing all the little things he used to take for granted, and escaping into comics and video games.

And, then, SUPERIOR came into his life, and nothing would ever be the same.

The book kind of comes off as a love letter to the era when Superman was considered to be the best. The coolest. The character, Ollie Janson, is kind of saddened by how SUPERIOR has become seen as old fashioned, and kind of uncool as the years have gone by, and when a new film is announced, Janson's love of the character is renewed... and then, his illusions of the character are shattered when.. well, we don't want to ruin the surprise.

All we can say is that this is definitely a unique twist on the age old Superman story, and brings Millar's unique way of mixing fiction and reality to the standard arch-type of the world's greatest superhero.

And, while we're not positive, we're assuming this is gonna be a pretty violent book, just judging from past ICON books like KICK-ASS and NEMESIS. Other than what we'e mentioned above, Millar has been pretty hush hush about the series, 'cause apparently the end of issue #1 has a great surprise twist. We've seen a few pages, and we can say that the art looks freakin' gorgeous, and LEINIL YU is knocking out some of his best work here.

This is probably the book I'm looking forward to most this week, and I can't wait to read it. Definitely give it a look if you're a Millar fan, or you just plain enjoy good comics with a little bit of an edge to 'em.

BATMAN: RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #5 - The Long Awaited Penultimate Fifth Chapter of RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE arrives, dropping the Dark Knight into the hardboiled streets of Gotham's past... Will he save his parents?

We have been hooked
in a big way on Grant Morrison's epic reinvention of Batman that's been going on over the course of the last few years, and which has culminated in the kick-ass RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE storyline. I mean, who would've thought, a few years back, that we'd not only be reading a storyline that paired Batman and time-travel together, but enjoying the hell out of it? Morrison has done a fantastic job of effortlessly blending the gritty realisim that makes the Dark Knight so compelling with a fresh, and innovative science fiction twist that Batman hasn't seen since the Silver Age.

And, now, after literally putting the Dark Knight through everything from the prehistoric age to having a bounty on his head hunted by Jonah Hex, we're seeing the issue that I think everyone has been waiting for the most. The '50s noir Batman issue.

Set against the hardboiled streets of Gotham City, this one is one of the most interesting of the series so far because of two reasons: the first one being that it shows us HOW he's coming back to the present, while also revealing what the major universe-shattering bad mojo is that will go down if he returns, and then the second being that this is also set in the same time period where Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered, which set off the entire chain of events that brought us the Dark Knight.

So, the big question is: what's gonna happen this week in issue #5?

We cannot wait to find out!

For those of you who haven't yet hopped onto BATMAN RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, we really recommend checking this book out. We've currently got issues #1-4 in stock, and with issue #5 arriving this Wednesday, it's pretty easy to get caught up.

What's it about? Well, you might've heard about how a few years ago Batman was killed by Darkseid. Yup, after the events of a storyline called BATMAN RIP (available in trade paperback here at Third Eye), Batman confronted Darkseid during FINAL CRISIS, and was totally zapped by some Omega beam action. But, that's only what we SAW happen, the truth of the matter is something happened which sent the Caped Crusader literally hurtling back in time with a mild case of amnesia. And, now, while here in the present, Dick Grayson's been rocking the cowl, Bruce Wayne has been literally fighting his way through the timestream, and living out various incarnations of Batman through the ages. The series rocks hard, and if you haven't read BATMAN in a while, it's a great spot to come onboard with the character, and get ready for the upcoming return of Bruce Wayne.

BRUCE WAYNE: THE ROAD HOME KICKS OFF THIS WEDNESDAY AS WELL, USHERING IN THE FIRST OF A HANDFUL OF ONE-SHOTS USHERING IN THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, AND SETTING UP THE BAT-BOOKS FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR!
brucewayneroadhome
Also hitting this week are the first few of a handful of kick-ass one-shots that're ushering in the Return of Bruce Wayne, and setting up the upcoming storylines in the various Bat-books. Each one of these one-shots serves as a killer one-shot story that helps pave the way for what's to come for Bruce Wayne, the mysterious and rumored BATMAN, INC., and characters like Tim Drake as Red Robin and of course, Dick Grayson as Batman.

This week, we'll be seeing BRUCE WAYNE THE ROAD HOME: BATMAN AND ROBIN, which brings us Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne straight from the pages of the kick-ass BATMAN AND ROBIN series, and their quest to squash a dangerous news article that could reveal the secret identities of the entire Bat-family to the world as a whole... and, on top of all that... Bruce Wayne has returned.

Next up, is BRUCE WAYNE THE ROAD HOME: BATGIRL, which clues us in to the future of Stephanie Brown as Batgirl, and whether Bruce Wayne's return will bring an end to her tenure, or lead to bigger and better things.

After that, you've got one that we're personally very stoked to see and that's the BRUCE WAYNE THE ROAD HOME: RED ROBIN, which shows us Tim Drake taking center stage as the one person who cotinued to have faith that Bruce Wayne was alive. But, now that he's proven right, how will this affect his life as Red Robin and all the changes he's been through?

Finally, in BRUCE WAYNE THE ROAD HOME: OUTSIDERS, how will the Outsiders react to the return of their former leader? This one's being penned by long-time Outsiders (and SON OF THE DEMON) writer Mike Barr, so that's pretty cool, in and of itself.

SHADOWLAND #4 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - DAREDEVIL Vs. THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

Shadowland has been one of the raddest things we've read from Summer into Fall, and it's definitely been one of my personal favorites as far as new Marvel books go. I honestly did not expect as much out of it when I first heard about it a year or so ago, but writer Andy Diggle and artist Billy Tan, they've both done a fantastic job of making this mini-event feel like the blockbuster it is.

At it's core, for those of you not reading SHADOWLAND, the story is essentially DAREDEVIL gone evil. Basically, after years of just plain crap luck, the Man Without Fear comes into a position of control over the guild of ninja assassins known as The Hand. He's become their leader, and at first, believes he can wield them as a force of justice and change for Hell's Kitchen. Well, you know what they say about the Road to Hell, and good intentions, right? So, this soon turns into Matt Murdock turning half of Hell's Kitchen into a giant prison/temple called SHADOWLAND and using the HAND as the city's new police force. The Avengers, and other NY-based Marvel heroes kind of turn a blind eye at first, and just kinda assume OK, well, you know, it's Daredevil, little crazy, but he should have this under control.

And, then Daredevil breaks both of Bullseye's arms and guts him on a rooftop, and everything goes to hell.

That's all just SHADOWLAND #1, folks, and now here we are on #4, and I don't even want to begin to ruin any of the kick-ass surprises that have gone down in issues #2 and #3. All I can say is that this storyline has refreshed and reinvigorated a ton of characters, ranging from Ghost Rider and DAREDEVIL himself to The Kingpin and many others.

Anyways, here we are, heading into issue #4, and after the KICK-ASS happenings that went down in the third issue, and I really don't want to ruin the ending of it for those of you not already reading the series, but for those of you who are, you know what I'm talking about. Not to mention all the stuff that went down in issue #2, with Kingpin summoning Ghost Rider, Daredevil ordering the Hand to kill Iron Fist and co., and Moon Knight's infiltration of Daredevil's organization, all of which continued to boil into issue #3, and lead us to this week's fourth installment.

If you're not reading SHADOWLAND, we've got the first 3 issues in stock, as well as all the tie-ins. And, I know what you're thinking: crap, do I have to get ALL the tie-ins? No. While most of them have been REALLY good (the Bullseye and Ghost Rider one-shots especially, as well as this week's Spider-man one), they're not essential to the story. The ONLY tie-in book we strongly recommend is the core DAREDEVIL title.

WALKING DEAD HARDCOVER Volume 6 - This Wednesday. A New Walking Dead Hardcover. Need we say more?
walkingdead6

I cannot think of a better example of a series that people love so much they actually collect it in multiple formats than WALKING DEAD. And it's understandable too, 'cause the series is that GOOD. You gotta have the copies you read and enjoy and can lend to friends, and then you gotta have the more prestigious copies that're in your own private collection, right? :)

Trust me, I feel you. And, that is why we're stoked to announce that for those of you who're doing the WALKING DEAD in hardcover, there's a brand new hardcover hitting this Wednesday. It's always a cause for celebration when one of these comes out, 'cause the hardcovers take twice as long as the trade paperbacks, and we know you guys are just itching to find out what's happened next.

Anyways, I don't think much else need be said other than if you're not already reading WALKING DEAD, PLEASE try this series, no matter what format.. softcover, hardcover, crazy big omnibus.. you will not be disappointed.

HACK/SLASH ANNUAL 2010 MURDER MESSIAH ONE-SHOT *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* SETS UP THE UPCOMING ONGOING HACK/SLASH SERIES!

We are HUGE, HUGE, HUGE fans of the HACK/SLASH series by Tim Seeley, and does that surprise you? I mean, it's not only a good comic, but it's full of straight up horror movie love and worship. And, ever since HACK/SLASH debuted under the Image banner, we've noticed the quality has been consistently top notch.

With the recent MY FIRST MANIAC Year One-style origin series now finishing up, Image and Seeley are gearing up for the upcoming HACK/SLASH ongoing series, and we cannot wait. This Wednesday, they're getting things started off right with a special one-shot annual, the HACK/SLASH MURDER MESSIAH annual.

This one-shot serves as a very cool prequel to the upcoming ongoing series, and is a great spot to jump aboard with Cassie Hack. In it, Cassie's biggest "fan" -- a serial killer -- is on a spree, cleaning up her loose ends. That means no fo or friend is safe. And, meanwhile 14 years in the future, in an America ruled by the Black Lamp Society, street-witch Liberty Lochs is on a quest to find Six Sixx's guitar.

Never read HACK/SLASH? It's great. If you love two things: good comics, and horror movies, then you'll dig it. Basically, HACK/SLASH is the story of Cassie Hack, the first Slasher hunter. What's a slasher? A slasher is basically an vengeful undead that's so full of rage and hate that it has to keep on killing. So, basically, Jason, Freddy, Michael Myers, ect, ect. Seeley is very clever in taking old school horror movie and B-Movie elements and using them to really build an interesting and yes, very gory, world for HACK/SLASH. The book continues to get better, and we recommend giving it a shot this week, and finding out why we're always pumped to see new HACK/SLASH stuff coming out.

UNTOLD TALES OF BLACKEST NIGHT #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* ONE-SHOT FEATURING GEOFF JOHNS & ETHAN VAN SCIVER REVEALS THE SCARECROW'S ROLE AS A SINESTRO CORPS MEMBER, DONNA TROY'S TRANSFORMATION INTO BLACK LANTERN, RAGMAN (yes RAGMAN!) and the BLACK RINGS & MORE!
untoldtalesblackestnight

Dude, I am so totally stoked about this one-shot. I've been pumped about this one ever since I first saw it solicited, and I cannot wait to sit down and get a crack at it this Wednesday.

I think we all know that one of the coolest things about BLACKEST NIGHT was getting to see different DCU characters being recruited as various Lantern Corps members. I mean, Luthor as an Orange Lantern, Scarecrow as a Yellow Lantern, and Flash as a Blue Lantern? Those were iconic comic moments.

So, this one-shot gives us MORE of that awesomeness, with stories by folks like GEOFF JOHNS, ETHAN VAN SCIVER, and more that show us what the heck Scarecrow did during his brief stint as a member of the Sinestro Corps, or how Donna Troy dealt with her transformation into a Black Lantern, not to mention many others.

With the list of creators attached to this one, and just a plain cool concept, this is a must-buy DCU title to check out this week, folks. We think you'll really dig it.

THOR #616 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*- THE 2ND PART OF MATT FRACTION'S EPIC THOR RUN ARRIVES WEDNESDAY. This could be the THOR run that ranks up there with WALT SIMONSON'S and J.MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI'S.

Okay, I like Matt Fraction's stuff A LOT. I really do. So, I had pretty high hopes for last month's THOR #615. I mean, you're talking to a guy who went from never caring about Iron Man to having INVINCIBLE IRON MAN as one of his favorite monthly books because of Fraction's fantastic storytelling. But, I had NO idea how much I was going to dig THOR until I read #615.

The story centers around how Asgard has been recently left empty in the wake of Siege, and of course, where there's a power void, a power will arrive to fill that void. And, it arrives in the form of an invading horde of extra-dimensional aliens who literally rain blood from the skies, and cleave a slew of ice elves in half. From there, we're taken into a world of Asgard where you see the remaining Asgardians trying to rebuild their kingdom, and then being assaulted by hordes of alien invaders. who're literally hacking and slashing their way through the realms of Asgard.

Now, sounds simple enough, right? But it's that simplicity that makes it awesome. Fraction is simply put reintroducing all of us to the awesomeness of Asgard, and the Jack Kirby/Walt Simonson-infused science fiction meets Norse mythology slant that the book hasn't had in ages. While we dug JMS's and Gillen's run, both were very dark in tone and appearance, and this one is really a perfect blend of the grit that you'd want to see from dudes in winged hats wielding hammers and then the bigger than life awe and splender that comes in the form of Asgard and it's inhabitants.

The artwork in this one is fantastic, especially, and Pasqual Ferry does an amazing job of sucking you right into the story and making Asgard and it's surrounding realms seem spacy and magical and awesome.

Folks, I cannot say it enough: give #615 a try if you haven't already. It's one of the best damn first issues of a new Marvel story arc we've seen in a while, and with Fraction intending to be on Thor for the long haul, I think we've got some very cool and very exciting things to come. We still have first prints of #615 in stock to get you caught up.

WARLORD OF MARS #1 DEBUTS THIS WEDNESDAY FOR ONLY $1.00, AND BRINGS BACK THE CLASSIC PULP HERO: JOHN CARTER

Edgar Rice Burroughs' original pulp science explorer returns this Wednesday with Dynamite's new WARLORD OF MARS series. Dynamite has made a name for themselves taking classic greats like the Lone Ranger, The Phantom, Buck Rogers, and others and breathing new life into them and re-inventing them for the 21st Century. We can't wait to see what Dynamite's got in store for John Carter in this new series. We're going to get to see the American Civil War veteran who is mysterious transported to Mars while exploring Arizona and all the things that lead up to his transportation to Mars. Of course, once on Mars, Carter finds himself with amazing strength due to the lesser gravity of Mars. And then, he gets all mixed up in the politics of Mars, and things get crazy from there.

Whether you're an old fan of the John Carter tales, or you've never read 'em before, this $1.00 first issue of the series is a great way to give the comic a go.

Check it out this Wednesday here at Third Eye.

X-MEN #4 *CURSE OF THE MUTANTS PT 4* - The BEST X-Men book we've read in ages continues. Is Dracula the X-Men's only hope? And, WTF, Vampire Wolverine? Yes, and it's awesome!

X-Men hasn't been this good in a long time, folks. I mean, it all really started with SECOND COMING, which kicked off some pretty kick-ass stuff and got us hooked, and now it's continued with the new ongoing X-MEN series and the first story arc, CURSE OF THE MUTANTS.

When I first heard the hook... Mutants vs. Vampires.. I thought it was gonna be totally lame, but, Marvel has not only managed to do something NEW and DIFFERENT with the X-Men, but it's also GOOD. I think a huge part of why I'm enjoying the new X-Title so much is the creative team is very solid. Gischler writes an X-Team that's focused on the characters you actually care about, and he captures the essence of characters like Wolverine, Jubilee, Cyclops and Colossus perfectly. When you combine that with Paco Medina's artwork, you get yourself a really solid read.

When I describe the current X-Men book to people, I usually say it's everything you loved about the X-Men when you were a kid but grown up. Basically, they manage to capture that intangible energy and excitement that X-Books had when we were all reading them as youngsters, and somehow wrap that into a maturely paced and plotted storyline. But, at it's core: it's fun.

Dracula's son, Xarus, has led a world domination quest after killing his father, and uniting all of the Marvel vampires under one flag. He's trying to take out the mutants first, because he figures he can turn them to his side, and have an even more powerful army of vampires, but ya know, with crazy mutant powers. So, what it boils down to is the X-Men, Blade, and a recently resurrected Dracula against thousands of bloodsuckers spanning from Atlantis to Transylvania.

And, it really freakin' rocks.

Anyways, after we saw the whole Wolverine getting turned thing in last month's #3, it looks like things're gonna get really interesting with the recently resurrected Dracula as well in #4 this week.

For those of you not already on board, we've got all the tie-ins as well as all the issues of the main series in stock, so getting caught up's easy. And, not all the tie-ins are necessary, we'd recommend starting with the DEATH OF DRACULA one-shot, and then just hopping onto the main ongoing CURSE OF THE MUTANTS series. There have been some kick-ass tie-ins so far though, so if you do need to catch up, we've got the full checklist posted below.

KNIGHT & SQUIRE #1 - Straight from the pages of Grant Morrison's BATMAN & ROBIN, Knight and Squire get their own six issue mini-series by rising star Paul Cornell (ACTION COMICS, DR. WHO TV series)
Gotham has Batman and Robin, London has Knight & Squire

Straight from the pages of Grant Morrison's critically acclaimed BATMAN AND ROBIN, Knight and Squire get their chance at the spotlight in this new 6-issue mini-series that fleshes the characters out more, and introduces us to their world. I'm personally very excited about this one for many reasons, one of which being that I've liked these characters since they first popped up in the JLA CLASSIFIED Ultra-Marine storyline, and then resurfaced again in THE BLACK GLOVE. I'm also stoked because it's being penned by Paul Cornell, who's slowly getting the exposure he very much deserves as an extremely talented comics writer. His work on ACTION COMICS recently has been out of this world, and we really think he's a perfect choice for KNIGHT & SQUIRE.

Plus, just judging from the preview pages, and the overall feel of it. This is genuinely a UK Batman and Robin-style book, but with a very strange, and surreal twist. Right down to the secret bar where a cease-fire exists, and villains and heroes gather to have a pint and talk about their days, and then the barriers that prevent confrontation magically dissappear and the whole place erupts into a brawl.. I mean, damn, does this not sound like a kick-ass Dr. Who episode, or what?

The book even looks like something you'd see out of a 2000AD mag, and that helps immerse you into it even more. I'm pretty pumped about this one, as it's something different, and pretty fresh.

VICTORIAN UNDEAD SPECIAL #1 - Sherlock Holmes vs.Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde! The Victorian Undead world returns, as our favorite detective returns from his zombie-fighting escapades to face Mr. Hyde

Victorian Undead was one of our favorite sleeper hits last year, as it took two of our favorite things: Sherlock Holmes stories and zombies and mashed them into one awesome mini-series. Now, the Victorian Undead series returns in this special one-shot which serves as a great entry point for those of you who missed the first mini-series (but don't worry, the trade paperback's coming soon).

What's this one about? Sherlock Holmes and Watson versus Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. How can you go wrong? Whether you dug the original, or you're like me, and the thought of alternate history madness with Sherlock Holmes fighting zombies, vampires and other monsters is too awesome to pass up, this one's a must read.

DAKEN DARK WOLVERINE #2 *WOLVERINE GOES TO HELL TIE-IN* - The first issue of the new Dark Wolverine series was a surprise hit, this book is great!

The first issue of the new ongoing DAKEN series was freakin' great. We were honestly not just impressed, but overwhelmed with how much we dug it. I mean, when they first introduced Daken, I really wasn't big on the character, but through careful development and character progression, they've really made him into a cool part of the Marvel universe in the last few years.

The thing about the Daken book that I like is that it kind of reminds me of what DC has been doing with ACTION COMICS and Lex Luthor. It's truly the 21st century take on the anti-hero character. Nowadays, we see characters like The Punisher, or whatever as heroes, whether they kill or not. But, characters like Daken and Lex Luthor, they're true anti-heroes, because they do downright despicable things and are morally shady in some areas, but at the same time, many of their actions are easy to sympathize and relate to.

And, I think it's pretty cool to see that evolution of character happening in superhero comics, as it continues to add layers of interesting stories to an already rich tapestry of past tales.

Anyways, Daken's new ongoing looks to be tying into the new Wolverine goes to Hell series, and in a big way with this week's issue #2. Apparenly, he's involved with the sending of his old man's soul to Hell, and now that dear old dad is out of the way, Daken is free to do whatever he pleases, but what exactly might that be?

If you missed issue #1, we've still got copies in stock to get you caught up.

DC COMICS PRESENTS - Two more low priced trade paperbacks from DC collecting out of print gems for only $8 each! BATMAN/CATWOMAN featuring art by ETHAN VAN SCIVER, and BRIGHTEST DAY, featuring Deadman, Hawkman and others by Neil Gaiman, Ed Brubaker & More
dccomicspresents

This whole DC Comics Presents thing they've got going on is a great thing. Basically, they're taking out of print classic stories that totally deserve a trade paperback collection and reprinting them in these low-priced $8 trade paperbacks. It's a great way to get a great 4 issue arc for a low price, and we're stoked to see DC doing it.

This week, we're getting another double dose of DC Comics Presents with DC COMICS PRESENTS BRIGHTEST DAY and DC COMICS PRESENTS BATMAN/CATWOMAN.

First in DC COMICS PRESENTS BRIGHTEST DAY, we're seeing a spotlight put on Deadman and Hawkman, two characters who've been main fixtures in BRIGHTEST DAY. This volume collects some fantastic stories written by the likes of Neil Gaiman, Ed Brubaker, and illustrators like Scott Kollins, Sean Phillips, and more.

Next up, we've got the kick-ass DC COMICS PRESENTS BATMAN/CATWOMAN which collects the 96 page elseworlds BATMAN AND CATWOMAN: TRAIL OF THE GUN story that features the artwork of ETHAN VAN SCIVER,.

Both of these look great, and at only $7.99 a pop, you cannot go wrong.

NEW AVENGERS #5 - New Avengers has proven itself as the consistent sleeper hit of the new Avengers line-up. This book is fantastic, and I never thought I'd be so into stories about Dr. Strange and the Eye of Agamatto

New Avengers has really proven itself as a stand-out title for Marvel, and hoenstly, when they debuted the line-up of new Avengers books, this one didn't really stand out as the must-read, ya know? I mean, it's hard to compete with the big guns like AVENGERS and SECRET AVENGERS, but you know what?

New Avengers has turned into probably one of my favorite books all over again. You can tell that these are the characters that Bendis really feels comfortable with, as the characterization and dialogue on this series is some of the best. And, the whole plot of the first arc, which is essentially Marvel Universe Magic Rebrith, has been pretty freakin' cool. And, this is coming from a guy who really doesn't usually get down with the whole mystical end of the Marvel Universe.

If you're looking for a solid Marvel team book that delivers good art, good story, and looks to be laying some foundations for bigger stories to come, then give NEW AVENGERS a shot. We've got issues #1-4 in stock to get you caught up.

PILOT SEASON FOREVER #1 - Top Cow's Pilot Season continues with a very cool Philip K. Dick/William Gibson-esque sci-fi one-shot this Wednesday

The Top Cow Pilot Season one-shots have been REALLY freakin' good this year. I've enjoyed almost all of them so far, and this week's newest: FOREVER, sounds pretty awesome.

What's the scoop on PILOT SEASON FOREVER? In the not-so-distant future, a pharmaceutical company called Longevity has developed a drug which extends human life and counters the debilitating effects of aging almost indefinitely. When a young doctor, who owes his life to Longevity, gets his dream job at the company, he learns there's some dark secrets about the price that immortality comes at.

This one looks awesome, and gives off a very cool cyberpunky Phillip K. Dick and William Gibson vibe.

GREEN LANTERN #58 - Geoff Johns's work on Green Lantern continues to make this one of our biggest must-read series. Last month's was fantastic, and this month's looks even better
GREENLANTERN58

If you fell off Green Lantern after BLACKEST NIGHT, do yourself a favor and pick up issue #53 going forward. This series has been only getting better, and better since Brightest Day began. The storylines running through GREEN LANTERN have been giving a lot of spotlight to the various Guardians of the Lantern Corps, and their new incarnations. That means we've been getting to see a lot of fan favorites like ATROCITUS, SINESTRO, of course HAL JORDAN, LARFLEEZE, ST. Walker, and even some glimpses as what's to come with the mysterious Indigo Tribe.

In last month's issue, we saw the whole thing with the entities, specifically the Predator entity, fleshed out, as the entity was unleashed and found a host in the form of the first male Star Sapphire.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but Green Lantern continues to be one of the best monthly superhero books I read, and Geoff Johns is just making the whole lore of the Lanterns, and what's to come more and more interesting.

MARVEL TOMB OF TERROR ONE-SHOTBRINGS GRUESOME MATURE READERS TAKES ON THEIR CLASSIC HORROR CHARACTERS

It's no secret that our favorite time of year here at Third Eye is Halloween, and one thing that's always remained constant is that comic publishers love to put out some cool horror or Halloween themed comics around this time of year. And, I'm a huge sucker for those. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're not, but ya know, I just dig it.

This week, the Marvel TOMB OF TERROR one-shot, looks like it's gonna be one of the good ones, as it gives us a kick-ass selection of critically acclaimed horror authors like JOE R LANSDALE doing mature audiences takes on classic Marvel horror characters like the Son of Satan, the Man-Thing, Werewolf By Night, and others. It looks bloody as hell, with that old school morality play kinda feel that TALES FROM THE CRYPT and CREEPY used to have.

STAR WARS: KNIGHT ERRANT #1 - THE NEXT BIG ONGOING STAR WARS SERIES ARRIVES! THIS LOOKS AWESOME!
Before the Sith and the Rule of Two, there was Knight Errant

You know, Dark Horse does a great job with the Star Wars stuff. It's surprising how well they do in giving us good stories in the expanded universe of George Lucas's iconic films. And, with STAR WARS LEGACY now ended, it's got us wondering what they're going to do next. I mean, Legacy was probably the flagship, and in my opinion, the best Star Wars comic in recent memory.

Well, starting this Wednesday, they're debuting what looks to be the next in a long-line of great ongoing Star Wars series with STAR WARS: KIGHT ERRANT.

This series is set 32 years before the Rule of Two was instituted, so basically it's when all the Sith are warring, and the Jedi Knights are few and far between. It's 32 years before the whole Master and Apprentice thing like Vader and The Emperor, ect, is instituted.

The series focuses on Kerra Holt, a Jedi who belongs to a group of Jedi who are essentially weekend warriors, and have now decided "we're going to try to do some raids out in the territory and change some things, even though we know we might not make that big of an impact." Of course, isolated like they are from most of the rest of the galaxy, they don't realize that they're flying into a whole mess of Sith, and Kerra ends up being the only one surviving, and she's stranded, all on her own, surrounded by thousands of sith.

All I can say is this one looks kick-ass, and judging from the art and preview pages we've seen, it looks like it could be the next big Star Wars series.

STRANGE TALES 2 #1 Debuts from Marvel giving high profile Indie creators a chance to do some twisted stuff with Marvel's characters. Featuring work by Dash Shaw, Jhonen Vasquez, Jeff Lemire, Rafael Grampa, Jeffrey Brown & More

Man, I freakin' loved the STRANGE TALES thing Marvel did last year, where they brought in some of the best of the best indie and small press comics creators and let em loose on doing some ridiculous and awesome stuff with assorted Marvel characters.

So, when they said they were going to be bringing the whole concept back again, I flipped out.

If you missed it last year, the whole deal with Strange Tales, is basically a three issue anthology series where various indie comics creators can come in and pretty much do whatever they want with assorted Marvel characters. This usually means you get some whacked out, super funny, and really cool stylized stories featuring various Marvel characters.

Some of the names attached just to this first issue alone are freakin' awesome, like Mesmo Delivery artist Rafael Grampa, SWEET TOOTH creator Jeff Lemire, Dash Shaw, JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC/INVADER ZIM creator Jhonen Vasquez, and Jeffrey Brown. Not to mention many others.

THIRD EYE STAFF PICKS

Steve - UNCANNY X-FORCE #1 - What a stellar read. Opena's art is incredible, and Remender manages to find a fresh angle on this team, and really make the book good. Throw in a non-annoying Deadpool, and you got yourself a solid read.

Trish - THE BOYS #47- The last few issues of the Boys have been getting crazy good, and this week's was the best one I've read in a while. I'm going to be sad when this series ends.

TORMA - CHAOS WAR #1 - AWESOME. Every Marvel character you can think of from big guys like Spider-man and Thor to obscure favorites like Nightmare and Ikaris. Reminds me of what the SECRET WARS would be like if it came out today. Big cosmic awesomeness on every page.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 9/9/10

***DUE TO THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY, NEW RELEASES ARRIVE ON THURSDAY 9/9/10 INSTEAD OF WEDNESDAY 9/8/10 THIS WEEK!***
DAKEN: DARK WOLVERINE #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* KICKS OFF A FRESH, EXCITING DIRECTION FOR THE DARK SON OF WOLVERINE! MARVEL'S MOST CUTTHROAT ANTI-HERO DEBUTS HIS OWN ONGOING SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY!
What's Daken Doing While Dear Old Dad's In Hell?

I'm gonna admit that when he originally appeared in Wolverine Origins, I wasn't totally sold on the whole Daken character. The way he was written back then, I don't know, it just didn't really do it for me. But, over the course of the last five years or so, writers Daniel Way and Majorie Liu have done a fantastic job of developing this character and giving him his own distinct voice and identity in the Marvel Universe. It really wasn't until his inclusion into the Dark Avengers, and his involvement in Siege, that I really found myself thinking "hey, they might have something here with this Daken character.."

And, while the line-up of "Wolverine-centric" books coming out this Fall are all pretty awesome looking in their own right (Uncanny X-Force is going to be off the hook, and I'm stoked on X-23 getting her own ongoing series), I gotta tell you guys, the first issue of DAKEN is pretty freakin' good. I read the advance earlier this weekend, and it really impressed me.

The series is loosely tied into the whole Wolverine Goes to Hell storyline that began last week in Wolverine #1, and shows us a fully realized character of Daken now. It makes him believable as the son of Wolverine that hid in the shadows for years methodically plotting how he'd one day dominate the world around him. And, now, with his father's body possessed by demons and laying waste to the world around him, while his soul is imprisoned in Hell below, it looks like Daken's time to shine has come.

The book is DARK, very dark, and the artwork definitely reflects that, playing up the visceral, and violent tendencies of the Daken character. There's also a really cool focus on the head-games Daken often plays with his targets.

All in all, for a new ongoing series, this one looks like it's gonna be a great read. It definitely fills a nice niche in the Marvel line-up of comics as a very dark, stylized anti-hero book for the 21st century. In a day and age, where the anti-heroes of days gone past can be seen as heroes by the public, Daken is the ultimate anti-hero. The character that you know is a bad person, but you can't help but root for.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #14 *Batman Must Die! Pt 2* *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*- THE BEST BATMAN AND ROBIN ISSUE YET? WE THINK THIS MAY BE IT! THE MYSTERIES OF BRUCE WAYNE'S VOYAGE THROUGH TIME REVEALED, THE JOKER'S DARK MACHINATIONS EXPLORED, AND MORE!

Grant Morrison's BATMAN AND ROBIN series has been freakin' fantastic, all the way through. From issue #1 to issue #13, it's remained one of my favorite superhero books on the stands. The level of quality and craft that goes into each and every issue has continued to keep me enthralled, and the selection of artists that Morrison has worked with on it are some of the best in the biz right now. Seriously, folks, if you're looking for that next classic Batman story in the making, you need to pick up BATMAN AND ROBIN. On a side-note, we've got issues 1-13 in stock to get you caught up to current, or you can grab the first hardcover that collects 1-6. Either way, if you're even remotely interested in Batman, you should check this stuff out.

Now, lets get to talking about this week's BATMAN AND ROBIN #14. I've only read a short preview of this week's issue #14, but I am convinced that this is the best freakin' issue of Batman and Robin we've seen yet. The first four pages alone are incredible, and they haven't even been lettered yet, so I'm just going by the pictures, but damn, it looks big. The current story arc, BATMAN MUST DIE, which ties into the RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, has shown us so far an evil Thomas Wayne raining on the Bat-family's parade, the grisly and final depiction of Joker's grin as a true surgical deformity, and even showing a tragic side to the character. In fact, this is one of my favorite portrayals of the Joker yet, as Morrison manages to make it so you don't feel sympathy for the sociopath, but the roots of his sickness become murkier. It's awesome, and revolting all at once to watch the Joker go from hysteria to remorse and fear without losing his smile.

But, the real star of this current BATMAN MUST DIE arc is Damian. The character many of us all hated when he first showed up, and now many of us totally dig, completely goes off the deep end, taking a crowbar and with one swing, defines himself as a character. Damian Wayne shows he truly is a Robin gone bad, and he'll do the things that neither Bruce or Dick will do.

BATMAN MUST DIE is kind of the high point for Morrison's BATMAN AND ROBIN series, and there's no secret why this one is coinciding with RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE. This arc feels as epic as the actual RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE arc does, and man, I really cannot wait to read issue #14 this week.

Folks, like I said before, get on with this book, it's great. Either jump on with issue #13 and, #14, the first two parts of the BATMAN MUST DIE arc, or go all the way back to issue #1 and find out why this is one of the best series out.

X-MEN #3 *CURSE OF THE MUTANTS* *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - The best damn X-MEN story we've read in a long time continues as it's MUTANTS VS. VAMPIRES, and Cyclops has decided to resurrect Lord Dracula!

Dude, I am so stoked on all the X-MEN stuff going on right now. I really think that they've got a good thing going, especially with the big flagship title, X-MEN, right now, and the whole Mutants vs. Vampires thing. In my opinion, the X-MEN comics are at their best when the pace is fast, and the action is constant. And, so far, the first two issues of X-MEN, along with associated CURSE OF THE MUTANTS tie-ins, have proven this in a big way. The fact that the focus is situated predominantly upon the characters you actually want to read about, like Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, and others, makes the book even better. And, if you're a lapsed X-Fan who's been wanting to jump back on, then you couldn't ask for a better jumping on point than X-MEN #1, and then get caught up with issue #2 and #3 this week.

Anyways, after last month's issue, we saw Blade re-introduced into the Marvel Universe in a pretty awesome way: chopping vampires into little bitty pieces with his badass sword. And, now, working alongside the X-Men, it looks like Blade might not be too cool with their next plan: finding Dracula's body and reuniting it with his head, to resurrect the Prince of Darkness. Add in that Jubilee has fully crossed over to the dark side, and embraced her vampiric nature, and well, you've got yourself a mess of awesomeness.

Like I said, folks, this is probably the most fun I've had with X-Books in a while, and I recommend giving it a shot. You'll really dig it. We've currently got all issues of X-Men in stock (issues 1 and 2), and all the Curse of the Mutants tie-ins as well.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE #6 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - If you're not reading American Vampire, you're missing one of the best comics out right now. This one does for Vampires what WALKING DEAD did for Zombies. You gotta check it out! Whether you love, or hate vampire stories... you'll love this series!

I know for the last 6 months I've been rallying on and on about this series, but you know what? I'm not gonna be stopping anytime soon, 'cause it's one of the best freakin' comics coming out right now. Writer Scott Snyder has a bright future in comics folks, the man has got the chops, and he has been completely on point with each and every issue of AMERICAN VAMPIRE. And, judging from the amount of new readers that the title picks up each and every month here at Third Eye, we think you guys are feeling the same way.

I know it sounds crazy, but this series, in my opinion, has potential to be the "next" Scalped, Preacher, Y: The Last Man, or Walking Dead. It's so well-written, and there's so much room for the characters to grow, I really cannot recommend it enough.

What is AMERICAN VAMPIRE? Essentially, it's the story of the FIRST American vampire, Skinner Sweet, and how his influence on various people throughout times has affected the world around him. But, just as much, it's also about a young actress named Pearl, who happens to find herself with a nasty new taste: human blood. In American Vampire, different regions of the world create different types of vampires. And, as we're shown in the flashbacks exploring Skinner's origins, sunlight's not quite as big of a deal for he or Pearl as it is some of the original vampires who came over from Europe. Little bits of trivia like that here and there help flesh out the world of American Vampire, making it something very fully realized.

Now, I know, there's a lotta vampire stuff going on out there nowadays. You got TRUE BLOOD tearing it up on TV, you've been drug to see the Twilight movies maybe, and well, you're saying right about now: "But Steve, I just don't dig vampire stories." Just like I tell folks when they say they don't dig zombies... this one's about so much more than the vampires. It's the characters, the plotting, and the overall feel and pace of the story that draws you in. It's just a damn good comic.

So, if you haven't yet checked out AMERICAN VAMPIRE, pick up issues #1-5 this week at Third Eye and get caught up to this week's #6. We really think you'll be glad you checked it out.

GREEN LANTERN #57 *BRIGHTEST DAY* - The first male Star Sapphire debuts in the form of the Predator Entity - Geoff Johns's GREEN LANTERN continues to be one of the best books out!

Well, it's almost been about 6 months or so since the conclusion of BLACKEST NIGHT, and overall the verdict on BRIGHTEST DAY has been pretty much that it kicks ass. But, the one book that has not just remained good, but gotten even better, has been Geoff Johns's flagship, GREEN LANTERN. Starting with issue #53 (a perfect jumping on point for new readers, and those of you who've been meaning to get into some of this GL stuff you keep hearing all about), the Brightest Day has taken GL in some very interesting directions.

And, now, this Wednesday, something that's got us as excited as we were when they first kicked off the story arcs introducing Atrocitus and Larfleeze, is the debut of the first male Star Sapphire, in the form of the Predator entity.

We're not sure what the story on this one is here, but just judging from how good each and every issue of GREEN LANTERN has been for like the last four or five years, we know that this one's gonna rock. Definitely snag a copy and find out what all the hype about GL is about this week!

INVADERS NOW #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - ALEX ROSS & "ABSOLUTION" & "AVENGERS ACADEMY" writer CHRISTOS GAGE REUNITE THE CLASSIC TEAM OF HEROES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES IN PRESENT DAY MARVEL CONTINUITY!

Now this is a pretty freakin' cool idea. I didn't even realize until reading the descriptions for this new limited series that all of the original Invaders are alive now in present day Marvel U.

So what's it all about? Well, the highly talented and often criminally underrated Christos Gage (ABSOLUTION, AVENGERS ACADEMY) is paring up with comics legend ALEX ROSS to deliver a story that shows us the first time in modern Marvel continuity that the original Invaders are all alive and in tact at the same time to reunite. But, of course, there's a catch, you know? And that catch is that there's some mysterious threat that's drawn them all together... and it's somehow linked to the darkest moment in Invaders history, an event so horrifying it threatens all life on Earth today. Sub-mariner, the original Human Torch, the Golden Age Vision, Spitfire, Union Jack, and Steve Rogers give the battelcry of INVADERS ASSEMBLE, and judging from the preview pages; it's gonna be awesome.

DR. HORRIBLE TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY COLLECTING THE CHRONICLES OF CAPTAIN HAMMER AND DR. HORRIBLE WRITTEN BY JOSS & ZACH WHEDON! INCLUDES A NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN 16 PAGE STORY ABOUT THE EVIL LEAGUE OF EVIL!
drhorrible
We're pretty much mega fanboys for everything and anything that falls into the realm of Joss Whedon-related projects, and the Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog stuff is no exception. This trade paperback collects the kick-ass Dr. Horrible one-shot from last year, and also (and this is the really awesome part) includes a brand new, never-before-seen sixteen page story about the Evil League of Evil! Plus, more Dr. Horrible awesomeness dwelling within!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #642 *ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES CHAPTER ONE* - "IRREDEEMABLE" writer MARK WAID kicks off a new Spider-man story with ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES this week, throwing the recently reunited Sinister Six at Spidey!
The birth of Norman Osborn's son has set off some serious bad mojo!

So, ever since the Gauntlet began a year or so ago, we've seen Spidey really being put through his paces. The revitalizing and return of many of his classic Rogues has been awesome. New takes on Kraven, Electro, and Doc Ock, are just some of the few highlights we've seen. And, now, with Origin of the Species, everything has come to a head.

See, Norman Osborn got the superpowered Goblin chick, Menace, pregnant oh, 9-10 months ago, and well, now that baby has entered the world, and every single Spidey villain you can think of wants to get their hands on the new strain of Goblin blood. It's up to Spidey to keep it out of their hands though, and well, hell, just look at that cover... he's gonna get himself in some serious trouble here.

Add in the fact that we're seeing Mark Waid penning this one, and if you're a fan of his stuff on IRREDEEMABLE, then you're obviously clued in to how awesome Mr. Waid can be.

This one should be a lotta fun! Click here for a preview ofAMAZING SPIDER-MAN #642 *ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES PT 1*

ERIC POWELL, creator of THE GOON, kicks off some weird west awesomeness this Wednesday with BILLY THE KID'S OLD TIME ODDITIES & AND THE GHASTLY FIEND OF LONDON!

You know, you can't help but love Eric Powell's stuff. His artwork, his storytelling, it's all got a real allure to it that's hard to define, but distinct as hell. I mean, the sense of humor in his work is fantastic, but it never prevents a good story from being told or comes off as corny. Plus, his artwork is AAAAWWWEEESOME. And, it's always nice to see more of that.

Anyhow, this week Powell brings us his tale of the notorious outlaw Billy the Kid, who the world thought dead, but in reality, the Kid has remained very much alive, and working as the hired gun of Fineas Sproule's traveling spectacle of biological curiosities -- aka -- freakshow, as Billy calls 'em. And, what's his latest assignment? Well, while in London, visiting the true Elephant Man, Billy becomes mixed up in the Whitechapel murders and Jack the Ripper.

SHADOWLAND DOUBLE-WHAMMY THIS WEEK:DAREDEVIL #510 and SHADOWLAND BLOOD ON THE STREETS #2

We are totally hooked on what Marvel's got going on with SHADOWLAND, and each and every issue of DAREDEVIL since the event kicked off has been a fantastic way of filling in the gaps between issues of the main SHADOWLAND series. Whether you're following all the SHADOWLAND tie-ins, or just the core book, we do recommend reading the Daredevil title alongside SHADOWLAND as it helps to really fill in what's going down in between the issues.

New York City's crumbling under the weight of Matt Murdock's new order, and Foggy Nelson is about to make an alliance that no one saw coming, plus things are about to go sour between DD and the Tarantula.

Also dropping this week is SHADOWLAND BLOOD ON THE STREETS #2 which follows the unlikely alliances of Silver Sable, the Paladin, Misty Knight, and the Shroud as they try to figure out if there's something sinister going on behind the scenes while everyone's destracted by DD's craziness.

Shadowland continues to rock.

WEIRD WAR TALES #1 ONE-SHOT FEATURING ARTWORK BY DARWYN COOKE DELIVERS A KILLER ONE-SHOT WAR COMIC EXPERIENCE THIS WEDNESDAY!

It's pretty awesome DC is reviving some of their key war comics of yesteryear for modern day twists on the title in this series of one-shots, but I gotta tell you, this one, WEIRD WAR TALES, is the one I'm most pumped about.

Why? It's got DARWYN COOKE doing artwork! This is the guy who's done amazing art for everything from his indie hit PARKER THE HUNTER to DC NEW FRONTIER. I mean, the guy is great.

And, plus, with promises of zombie soldiers, horror beneath the sea, or battles amongst dinosaurs... this one will definitely put the Weird in WEIRD WAR TALES!

Also, if you're digging these war comic revivals, we still have copies available of the first in the series of one-shots from last week, OUR ARMY AT WAR.

PUNISHER MAX HOT RODS OF DEATH ONE-SHOT DELIVERS SOME SERIOUS PUNISHER vs. BIKER GANG AWESOMENESS! BLOODY, BRUTAL, AND UNRELENTING!

We're a sucker for the world of PUNISHER MAX, and these one-shots they've been doing recently have been delivering the goods big time. Brutal, quick, and bloody one-shot tales set in the gritty, nihilistic world of Punisher MAX, that drag you down below the surface of society... these have all been pretty solid.

This week, crime novelist Charlie Huston (also responsible for that kick-ass David Finch Moon Knight stuff) delivers a slab of Punisher awesomeness as one of his old fellow soldiers in 'Nam calls in a favor to deal with a gang of crazed bikers.

This one's gonna be awesome. Click here for a preview ofPUNISHER MAX HOT RODS OF DEATH

NEW AVENGERS #4 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - Bendis's character-driven Avengers books continues to deliver, as we delve deeper into the mystical spectrum of Marvel characters!

We've been digging NEW AVENGERS, and I'll tell you why: it's got the best characterization out of all the new Avengers titles. Now, granted, my personal favorites still remain AVENGERS and SECRET AVENGERS (highly highly recommend SECRET AVENGERS), but, NEW AVENGERS delivers the best dialogue, and best character-driven storytelling of the buch. And, the reason being is that NEW AVENGERS is composed of pretty much a who's who of series writer Brian Michael Bendis's favorite characters. This is the group of characters he completely defined over the course of the last decade, and it only makes sense that they pop so well.

Anyhow, this first story arcs been rad, taking the New Avengers into some serious mystical territory as Hellstorm's being a real jerk, and Dr. Strange has been possessed by some otherworldly entity.

I'm gonna call it right now, folks, just like the cosmic end of the Marvel Universe was redefined by Abnett and Lanning in ANNIHILATION, we're seeing the groundwork laid for many potential explorations into the magic characters of the Marvel Universe with this story arc.

Missed issues 1-3? We've got 'em in stock to catch you up.

THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL: NEW LINSNER ART WITH DAWN: NOT TO TOUCH EARTH ONE-SHOT THIS WEEK!

We know that a lot of you are as big of fans of Joseph Michael Linsner as we are, and it's always a blast to see his incredible artwork hit the racks here at Third Eye. This week, he's kicking out a new one-shot that delivers a 48 page all-new one-shot story of Dawn, that shows her in a completely new light.

STAFF PICKS

Steve - WOLVERINE #1 - Dude, it's like freakin' CROSSED meets WOLVERINE. Probably the best Wolverine we're gonna see since OLD MAN LOGAN. Must-read material here.

Trish - SCARLET #2 = This is my favorite new series of the year. A chick and a gun, what's not to love? Pick up issue 1 and 2 and tell me how you like it. I give it the Trish seal of approval!

Torma - SHADOWLAND #3 = VERY cool read. The most intense book I read last week, and I'm loving the direction they're going with this whole storyline.

Matt - MORNING GLORIES #1 = I know this one came out already, but with us getting it back in stock this week I decided to give it another read, and it's really got potential to be the next big Image hit. A great dark conspiracy story mixed with teen drama. Great read and great art.

THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE FOR WEDNESDAY 9/1/10

Third Eye is Fueled This Week By:
Sounds: Dinosaur JR - Bug
Sights: Veronica Mars Season 3 - Not as good as the first two, but we're holding onto hope for things to pick up.
Tastes: That disgusting energy gum at the con. I still can't get rid of that taste.

WOLVERINE #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - WOLVERINE GOES TO HELL THIS WEDNESDAY IN THE FIRST ISSUE OF THE NEW ONGOING WOLVERINE SERIES by JASON AARON (writer of the Vertigo crime drama SCALPED) and rising star artist RENATO GUEDES! ALSO, DON'T MISS THE SPECIAL PROLOGUE ONE-SHOT, WOLVERINE: THE ROAD TO HELL
The biggest Wolverine story since OLD MAN LOGAN begins this week!
Wolverine hacking his way through the Marvel Universe while his soul is tormented in Hell by his old enemies!

This comic is going to kick so much ass, it's unbelievable. Guaranteed, this will be the raddest Wolverine story since OLD MAN LOGAN. Last week, you might remember us giving you one of those cool freebie Saga hand-outs that Marvel does. Well, that book there, provided pretty much everything you need to know about Wolverine, and what the heck he's been up to for the last few years. If you missed it, we do indeed have some left at the shop, and yes, they're totally free. Perfect way to prime yourself for this new series. Why is the new WOLVERINE a major must-read? We're gonna tell you right now..

1. The Creative Team - This new series is going to be AWESOME. Jason Aaron is the best possible choice for being the writer on Wolverine, and he's proven already that he can be a versatile, and talented writer on books like WOLVERINE: WEAPON X, SCALPED, PUNISHER MAX, and ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN/WOLVERINE. He knows what makes good Wolverine characterization, and his Wolverine reads like the iconic loner you remember idolizing as a 13 year old kid with your stack of comics, and Entombed CDs. Or maybe that was just me? Either way, he GETS IT. And, that's only one of the many reasons why I'm stoked about this new series. The addition of Renato Guedes as artist is a major bonus, and his Wolverine looks great. Very gritty, very visceral, he almost jumps off the page to you. You can see very line, and every hardship that 200+ years on this planet can cause etched into his face. In other words: he's the perfect artist for this book. Are you starting to see a pattern? This is a dream team of creators here, and they're the masterminds behind Marvel's relaunching of it's biggest icon of all-time.

2. The Plot and Direction of the Book - The direction for the title sounds very promising. Basically, this is a self-contained Wolverine title that stands as a perfect place for new and old fans to jump aboard ol' Wolvie. It's a fresh start to a new story, and the book itself is going to be a very well-done, self-contained kind of read that anyone can pick up and roll with. In other words, it's gonna capture that same kind of feel the original Wolverine series had where it really was just about Wolverine, and the totally screwed up people that came, went, and crossed his path throughout his journeys and adventures.

The first story arc itself sounds INCREDIBLY epic... Wolverine goes to hell. Literally. See, someone is out to destroy Wolverine... in every way possible. Body, mind, and soul. And, he's going to be sent straight to Hell, 'cause lets face it: Wolverine has done some nasty stuff in his time. Now the thing that makes this so cool is we're going to see A LOT of dead Marvel characters that've been rotting away in Hell, and while some of them probably deserved their fate, Aaron hints that not all of them have. It's pretty awesome to think that we'll get to see, of course, the obvious rematch between Wolverine and Sabretooth, who's all demon'd out now.

Plus, while Wolverine's soul is in hell, his body's not quite rotting in the ground. See, his demonically possessed body is gonna be hacking and slashing it's way through some of his old buddies, including a highlight mentioned by Aaron in an interview of a demonic Wolvie vs. Colossus fight that promises to be a cornucopia of metal vs. metal ultra-violence.

We're gonna see Wolverine getting put through the wringer like he's never been before, and he's going to be literally dragged through every corner of the Marvel U's hell. Knowing Aaron's style, we're going to see a VERY violent, blood-filled tale, with some solid writing, and some characterization.

How awesome does this sound?

3. It's the return of a Wolverine ongoing series - And, at the end of the day: it's the return of Wolverine to a monthly, ongoing title, and it's a Top Tier creative team title too! While I loved Weapon X, and thought Aaron did a great job, it never felt as tied to the Marvel Universe as the first issue of the new WOLVERINE ongoing did when I read the advance. This book feels much more in line with everything, and it's good to just see a killer Wolverine monthly back on the shelves.

All in all, this book is gonna kick-ass, and we highly recommend picking up the first issue this week if you just plain dig high quality high-action, and sometimes pretty violent superhero books.

WOLVERINE ROAD TO HELL ONE-SHOTPROVIDES THE PERFECT SET-UP FOR THE NEW WOLVERINE ONGOING SERIES, AS WELL AS THE KILLER NEW X-FORCE & X-23 SERIES!

Also dropping this week is the killer looking wolverine one-shot that provides not only a prologue to the new WOLVERINE ongoing series, but also provides preludes to the highly anticipated new X-FORCE series (by Rick Remender and Jerome Opena, where Archangel has hired the likes of Psylocke, Wolverine, Deadpool, and others to assassinate Apocalypse), and the new X-23 ongoing series that also looks pretty badass.

This one-shot is a perfect pick-up point to get a taste of what's to come, and check out some all-new prelude stories that set up these kick-ass new titles.

MORNING GLORIES #1 BACK IN STOCK AT THIRD EYE THIS WEEK! THIS SURPRISE HIT FROM IMAGE COMICS TOOK US BY STORM LAST MONTH, AND WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT THE NEW PRINTINGS WE'RE GETTING IN STOCK THIS WEDNESDAY!

Dude, the first issue of this series was fantastic. I was bowled over by how much I enjoyed it, and it looks like I wasn't the only one. I believe we're either almost sold out of the initial shipment of these #1s, or we're down to our last copy, but, either way, we've got more copies of #1 coming back into stock this week for you to get your chance to check out what could end up being the next CHEW or WALKING DEAD for Image Comics.

So, what's it about? Well, Morning Glories is about the most prestigious prep school in the country: Morning Glory Academy. On the surface, the Morning Glory Academy appears to be a school that caters to only the most prestigious and powerful families in the country, but under the surface, there is a much darker, much more sinister reality. What's interesting is how the image and the reality manage to co-exist, as the school is able to graduate successful top students to Ivy League schools.

The first issue introduced us to six new students who have no clue what they're getting into, and this is where the read gets really good. Nick Spencer does a fantastic job of making each character stand out as realistic, and fleshed out. He really makes them believable, and much like books like Walking Dead and Chew, manages to really get you attached to the characters in the span of one issue. The characters are all different in their own way, like the brilliant sociopath that comes from a rich affluent family and is always looking to screw with people for his own amusement, or Hunter who's leaving home has an Almost Famous moment allusion involving Grant Morrison comics. The characters do share one thing in common: the same birthday. And, this is the first thing that tips them off that something is up.

There's a lot of mystery going on with this book, and we're really trying to be careful what we say here because we don't want to give away any of the good surprises or twists. But, dude, if you like stuff that's a little off the beaten path, try Morning Glories, the book is rad. Highly recommended.

INVINCIBLE VOLUME 13 GROWING PAINS TRADE PAPERBACK HITS THIS WEDNESDAY!

The only thing that's just as good as a new volume of WALKING DEAD arriving is when a new volume of INVINCIBLE hits. What's the common factor here? Can we say Robert Kirkman?

Yup, it's time, folks, another slab of Kirkman awesomeness hits this Wednesday, and damn, it feels like Volume 12 just came out, but I guess Summer just flew right on by. Either that, or Image is getting better about getting these bad boys out on time. :)

If you're not reading INVINCIBLE by now, then you have to check this series out. Especially if you're a fan of WALKING DEAD. Two totally different genres of comic, but both just as awesome as the other, due to the fact that they're both written by Robert Kirkman.

I love Invincible, in my opinion, I'd say is' the most realistic look at superheroes I've ever read. The relationships Kirkman builds between his characters, the way that he develops the plotlines and the characters within, it's awesome. Very very good stuff.

And, don't let the colorful cover art fool ya... Invincible is one of the bloodiest, most gut-wrenching superhero books on the stands. The fact that there's some really poignant, really strong character-driven storytelling driving that, makes it even more of a punch to the gut.

Pick up volume 1 sometime if you've never read the series, and you'll see why we can't say enough good about this one.

As for the rest of you, who, like myself, are hooked on this series, we'll see you Wednesday for Volume 12! If you want us to set one aside for ya, just drop me a line, because I do know that people are always itching for their next Kirkman fix!

SHADOWLAND #3 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY*- Daredevil's gone crazy, killed Bullseye, and is now at war with most of the NY-based Marvel Superheroes.... this series kicks ass, one of the best things we're reading this summer!

Missed issues 1 & 2, we've still got copies of both in stock to get you caught up!

Shadowland has been nothing short of awesome so far, and we've been totally hooked with the first two issues. I just got done reading the advance of #3, and damn, folks... you're gonna love this one. A major turning point in the event, with probably one of the bigger shocks I've seen so far.

Now, for those of you who've already read issue #2, you know just why Ghost Rider's on the cover here, and I have to admit: it's one of the coolest uses of the characters I've seen in a while. Being summoned by The Kingpin? Insanity.

Anyways, we're going into issue #3 this week, and as always, I'm keeping it spoiler-free, 'cause I know you guys are gonna want to be surprised.

I will say this though, if you're not yet reading SHADOWLAND, you gotta check this one out. Daredevil has fallen into madness after taking over The Hand, built a giant prison/temple thing in the middle of Hell's Kitchen, and dubbed it Shadowland, and is pretty much trying to take over New York City and run it himself with his empire of evil Ninjas. All in the name of justice. Oh, and he totally broke both of Bullseye's arms, and stabbed him to death with a sai ala the Elektra death.

So, of course, none of this sits well with the NY-based Marvel heroes like Spider-man, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Moon Knight, and others. And, that leads us to one hell of a showdown between Daredevil's factions and them.

This series, like I said above, is complete and total awesome, with some fantastic writing by Andy Diggle (writer of THE LOSERS) and Billy Tan (artist from NEW AVENGERS last year). Great stuff, great story.

Click here to check out our SHADOWLAND checklist to find out more about SHADOWLAND and get caught up on this great storyline. We currently have all of the tie-ins in stock.

SHADOWLAND ELEKTRA ONE-SHOT ALSO DROPS THIS WEDNESDAY EXPLORING HER RETURN TO DAREDEVIL'S SIDE AND MORE!

Also shipping this week, we've got a killer one-shot that ties into Shadowland spotlighting Elektra, and her return to Daredevil's side. Knowing the past between these two, and judging from the quality of all the pretty awesome Shadowland tie-ins thus far, this one looks like it's gonna be a pretty kick-ass read.

SCARLET #2 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* - BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (writer of SIEGE, AVENGERS, POWERS, SPIDER-WOMAN, ect ect) and ALEX MALEEV (artist on DAREDEVIL & SPIDER-WOMAN) deliver their second issue of this killer new modern day political noir thriller!

The first issue of Scarlet was freakin' awesome, and we're amped to see the second one hitting the shop this week.

What is SCARLET? Well, from what we got from the first issue of Scarlet, it's definitely one of the best modern day crime-noir comics we've read in a while. And this isn't surprising, because it's the noir stuff that Bendis does best, and when paired with Maleev, he's practically untouchable. The book itself is very interesting in that it completely disregards the fourth wall, and has Scarlet literally talking to us, the readers, and not even in a humorous way, but in the way the protagonist of a good novel would. There's a certain connection that is fostered between the reader and Scarlet that helps pull you deeper into the story, and become more immersed with where it's heading.

Now, with that being said, the actual plot and concept of the book is pretty simple: a girl and a gun. But, it's Bendis and Maleev's crazy good writing and storytelling that really makes Scarlet stand out as a great read. Scarlet's a woman who has been through a whole life of bad turns, and twists, and she's reached her breaking point. There's a sense of politically charged motivation, but we can tell that she's completely fallen into a life of crime, and you know what they say about the road to hell? It's paved with good intentions. The book is a violent ,visceral read that does some very innovative stuff with comic book storytelling that we have not seen anywhere before.

Highly recommend picking up a copy, and checking out issue #1 if you haven't already. We do still have copies in stock to get you caught up to #2 this week. You won't be disappointed in this one! A very cinematic read that reminds you of a really kick-ass La Femme Nikita.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS #1 *THIRD EYE CERTIFIED COOL* - "JONAH HEX" & "TIME BOMB" writers JIMMY PALMIOTTI & JUSTING RAY DEBUT THE ONGOING SERIES OF THIS DC CULT FAVORITE!
freedomfighters1
I'm a big fan of the recent incarnations DC has done with Uncle Sam, the Freedom Fighters, and all those Earth-X characters. There's just this great grindhouse movie meets superhero awesomeness feel to these stories.

And, now, the Freedom Fighters are getting their own ongoing series, and it looks great! Penned by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, the guys who brought you the previous Freedom Fighter limited series, this new series provides a fresh jumping on point for those of you who've never read the adventures of the freedom fighting team from the Earth where Nazi Germany won a prologned WW 2 due to a Japanese invasion of California, and advanced developments in nuclear weaponry.

Now, the current team, which came together a few years back, and is loosely based off of notes by Grant Morrison, presents an interesting dynamic. Uncle Sam is portrayed as an almost Christ-like figure, returning from the dead, with the new Firebrand filling a John the Baptist role. Plus, there's a character named Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard... how can you not love that?

What's up with this new ongoing series? Well, a national mystery unfolds when the government learns of the existence of a Confederate super weapon that was never used during the Civil War. This leads Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters through a hidden history of the United States that delivers some very shocking twists.

I can't wait to check this out, as Palmiotti and Gray have a really good thing going with this line-up of characters. If you're a fan of quirkier stuff like Atlas, Atomic Robo, and the like, you should definitely give this book a shot.

THOR: FOR ASGARD #1 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - THE ART IN THIS BOOK IS UNBELIEVABLE! CHECK OUT THIS AWESOME LIMITED SERIES SHOWCASING THE GOD OF THUNDER LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE!

Man, this one looks really, really nice. This new MARVEL KNIGHTS limited series focusing on an Asgard that's in the midst of armed revolt, a missing Odin, a dead Balder, and the entire realm battered by a years-long winter, gives us a look at Thor like we've never seen him before.

Did we mention that Mjolnir has mysterious denied Thor from wielding it? Yeah. Looks like Thor's got a lot on his plate here, and it's gonna be interesting to see how this goes down.

On the creative team side, this one looks great, with Rob Rodi handling the writing, and if you've read Submariner the Depths or Loki, then you'll recognize that name because he's the guy who made those series stand out so well. The real star of the show here though is Simone Bianchi, who is handling the pencils, inks and colors all in one, and they look GREAT. His art is a perfect fit for Thor and the world of Asgard.

The advance of this looks great, and Bianchi really does bring Asgard, and all of it's Gods and Monsters to life in a magnificent way. You want a bloody, brutal, and at the same time, regal and awe-inspiring Thor story? This is it.

If you read one Thor comic in 2010, it has to be THOR: FOR ASGARD. This is gonna rock.

X-MEN: CURSE OF THE MUTANTS SMOKE AND BLOOD #1 ONE-SHOT BRINGS MORE X-MEN VS. VAMPIRES AWESOMENESS THIS WEDNESDAY!

Curse of the Mutants has been one of the best damn X-Men storylines we've seen in a while, and it's been keeping us hooked week after week. So far, all of the tie-ins have been fantastic, and this week's latest looks very interesting, as we get to see the X-Men's Science Team begin their attempts to find a cure for vampirism. Of course, bringing a vampire into their lab for examination, may not have been the best idea.

BALTIMORE: THE PLAGUE SHIPS #2 hits this Wednesday delivering another awesome monthly shot of old school vampire-killing awesomeness!

The new Mignola book, BALTIMORE: THE PLAGUE SHIPS is freakin' fantastic. And, we cannot wait to read issue #2 this Wednesday, as it looks like we're going to get a look at the terrible incident where Lord Baltimore's soldiers fell victim to creatures that feast upon the freshly dead.

This series provides a great, steampunky horror tale that is the perfect kinda story for Mignola to tell. The first issue drew us in, and Stenbeck's art that's packed with arcane objects, really brings you into the story.

If you missed issue #1, we've still got copies in stock to get you caught up to this week's issue #2

CHOKER #4 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING MORE AWESOME "BLADE RUNNER" MEETS "PULP FICTION" AWESOMENESS

Are you reading CHOKER? This incredible mash-up of crime noir, hardcore cyberpunk science fiction, and bloody splatterpunk horror is incredible. Ben Templesmith has given us the perfect replacement dose to tide us over until a new issue of Fell hits, and we're stoked about it.

A private detective gets brought back onto the police force he was disgraced from to figure out just what's up with this new designer drug that's turning those crazy kids into vampires, oh, and did we mention he's got a disease that's turning his hand into an alien lifeform? That's where things kick off, as we're thrown into the twisted, bleak, futuristic dystopia that is Choker.

If you haven't tried this one, we've got issues #1-3 in stock at the shop, and recommend giving the series a try.

TASKMASTER #1 - EVERYONE'S FAVORITE ANTI-HERO GETS HIS OWN LIMITED SERIES KICKING OFF THIS WEDNESDAY! And it looks pretty freakin' sick!

You know the one thing that really made AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE interesting near the end was the development of Taskmaster. He's always been a personal favorite, but to see them kinda take the whole supervillain for hire approach the direction they did, was pretty awesome.

See, Taskmaster is the guy that gets hired to train the henchmen and super-thugs for all the big-time criminal organizations; be it Hydra, AIM, the Sons of the Serpent, whoever... he's trained 'em. And, well, there's a rumor on the spread now that he's turned traitor and is working for Steve Rogers. What's this mean? It means a billion dollar bounty has been smacked on his head, and he's gotta fight hordes upon hordes of his psychopathic students while at the same time trying to figure out who framed him.

This one's gonna rock, why? 'Cause Taskmaster rocks.

DC KICKS OFF IT'S MONTH-LONG SERIES OF SPECIAL WAR COMIC ONE-SHOTS WITH OUR ARMY AT WAR #1 THIS WEDNESDAY!

ourarmyatwar1
You really can't deny it, war comics have a huge place in the history of comics. And, there have been some incredible war comics done throughout the years. Be it the classic stuff Joe Kubert did, or the more modern stuff that we've seen Garth Ennis do, it's a genre that seems to be a perfect fit for comics.

And, you know, being the suckers for good ol' fashioned war comics we are here at Third Eye, we're stoked to see DC's month long special of War comic one-shots bringing us brand new stories under the banners of their most classic war titles.

This week, we're gonna see Our Army At War, which gives us a different kind of Sgt. Rock story - one that follows the combat-happy Joes of Easy Company decades ago, and simultaneously, a modern unit in the mountains of Afghanistan, and shows interesting parallels between the two groups of soldiers.

Should be awesome, check it out this Wednesday at Third Eye!

HEROIC AGE: ONE MONTH TO LIVE #1 - What Would You Do With One Month to Change the World?

This one looks pretty freakin' cool. I'm still not totally clear on the whole plot and concept behind it, but from what I've seen and read so far, I dig it. Plus, Rick Remender is working on it, and well, Rick Remender's awesome.

The question? What would you do with one month to change the world? This is what Dennis Sykes is asking himself when he ends up becoming Marvel's unlikeliest. Banker by day, struggling parent by night - and miserable about it all. But, when a tragic turn of events gives Dennis a 30 day death sentence, he discovers his accident comes with super-powers. And, as the weeks in Dennis's life tick down, he sets out to leave a mark one way or the other -- even if he has to go through Spider-man, the FF, and the Avengers to do it.

Sounds pretty interesting, we'll have to see how this one turns out.

AVENGERS CHILDRENS CRUSADE #2 *THIRD EYE MUST BUY* - The original creative team behind YOUNG AVENGERS has returned and are kicking major ass with this 9-issue maxiseries!
The Search for the Scarlet Witch Continues!

It's so awesome to see Allan Heinberg and Jimmy Cheung working together again on the Young Avengers characters. Their original 12-issue run of Young Avengers was incredible, and I know I wasn't the only one who was completely blown away by what an awesome read that turned out to be. It's especially awesome to see Cheung back and doing some interior artwork, as he's an incredibly talented dude, and does some amazing stuff.

And, now with Children's Crusade, they're doing it all over again, and delivering a kick-ass comic in the process. The story is focusing on how the Young Avengers have discovered the secret of Wanda Maximoff's disappearance, and the Avengers attempts to neutralize the Scarlet Witch before the Young Avengers can find her. And, you know where this is all heading, right? An all-out war between the Avengers, the X-Men, and with the Young Avengers stuck in the middle.

TALES FROM WONDERLAND MAD HATTER vs. the QUEEN OF HEARTS ONE-SHOT ROUNDS OUT ZENESCOPE'S LATEST ROUND OF WONDERLAND ONE-SHOTS THIS WEDNESDAY!

We're totally suckers for Zenescope's tongue-in-cheek, uber-violent, and totally twisted approach to the classic story of Alice in Wonderland, and all it's mythos. They've really shaped and developed a unique world that springs from the original material in a very interesting way. If you're a fan of stuff like the classic American McGee's ALICE game, or Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, then you should really check out some of the Zenescope WONDERLAND stuff.

Right now, they're doing some stand-alone, one-shot stories that focus on different prominent characters in their Wonderland mythos, like the Mad Hatter, and the Red Queen. And, this Wednesday, we get a one-shot showing us the two going head to head, and trying to wipe the other out.

Awesome stuff, we've got the previous one-shots in stock as well, which are TALES FROM WONDERLAND WHITE KNIGHT, and TALES FROM WONDERLAND ROSE RED.

STAFF PICKS

Steve - NAMOR #1 - A true surprise hit. Never would I thought I'd be calling a Namor comic my pick of the week, but this one delivered some seriously creepy Lovecraft meets Robert E. Howard's Conan vibes. Really, really awesome stuff. Highly recommended.

Trish - SCIENCE DOG #1 = I loooove Robert Kirkman, and this one-shot was awesome. A dog turned super-genius with a jetpack? Yes!

Torma -GUARDING THE GLOBE #1= Great read, Kirkman gives us another dose of his take on the world of superheroes with this super-team springing out of the pages of Invincible. Really cool stuff.

Matt - BATMAN #702 = The best Grant Morrison Batman issue of the year, in my opinion. This one comic makes so much sense of EVERYTHING. Batman RIP, Final Crisis, the whole shebang. Pick up 701 and 702, and get your mind blown!
