This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 2/1/12

THE WINTER SOLDIER RETURNS IN THIS WEDNESDAY’S WINTER SOLDIER #1 - A BRAND NEW ONGOING SERIES FROM ED BRUBAKER (WRITER OF FATALE)!
IT LOOKS INCREDIBLE!

This book kicks ass. Seriously. I have to tell you, I was a huge fan of the original WINTER SOLDIER storyline where Bucky was first returned as a kick-ass, hard-nosed soviet soldier with a shadowy black ops past. And, while I loved Bucky in the role of CAP, I always preferred the WINTER SOLDIER angle.
And now, Bucky returns to his roots, with this stellar-looking new ongoing series, and we cannot wait. First off, let me say this: I’ve read a good chunk of the book, and I freakin’ love it. It’s very unique, much like DAREDEVIL was unique when it debuted last year, and UNCANNY X-FORCE was unique when it debuted the year before, it just has it’s own voice and feel. It’s something I’ve noticed out a lot of recent Marvel launches, they’re really trying to make each ongoing title stand on it’s own two feet as a kick-ass, top tier read. And, it’s definitely grabbing my attention.
Butch Guice and Bettie Breitweiser are a dynamo of an art team, bringing the most incredible espionage / noir look and feel to this book that we’ve seen in a title since, well, Brubaker’s crime-noir stuff with Sean Phillips. This book really conjures up the dark underworld that the Winter Soldier exists within, and we love it.
What’s the scoop on WINTER SOLDIER? It all starts with Bucky, the youthful sidekick of Cap, who was seemingly killed in action.. that is until he returned as the Soviet Union’s very own secret weapon: the Winter Soldier. A brainwashed, mechanically-enhanced assassin who’s operated in secret for decades.
For a while there, Bucky picked up the mantle of Captain America, while Steve Rogers was out of action. And, now, with Rogers back as Cap, Brubaker, writer of Third Eye favorite FATALE, is taking the character back to his black ops roots with WINTER SOLDIER.
This series follows Bucky as he’s hunting down other Soviet-era assassins from his past life, and it’s really a treat to see Brubaker bringing that unique blend of superhero psychotronic espionage and spy thriller back to the page. We loved it in SLEEPER (available in trade at Third Eye, a very cool espionage superhero story he did with FATALE and CRIMINAL artist SEAN PHILLIPS), and we’re loving it in WINTER SOLDIER.

ALPHA GIRL #1 – IMAGE DOES IT AGAIN! HOLY CRAP, ANOTHER KILLER NEW SERIES THAT WE ARE LOSING OUR MINDS OVER!
IT’S 1984… ZOMBIES GALORE… AND ONE PUNK ROCK GIRL IS ALL THAT STANDS BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ANNIHILATION
Okay, folks, I know I show IMAGE a lot of love, but: IT’S SO FREAKIN’ WELL-DESERVED. In my opinion, they have been quickly climbing the ladder in terms of publisher innovation, and sheer quality in their books. I’m really impressed with the stuff coming out of IMAGE these days, and their current Editor-in-Chief, Eric Stephenson, is blowing my mind with the killer titles he’s having IMAGE pick up.
This week, a brand new IMAGE series kicks off in the pages of ALPHA GIRL, and it looks so freakin’ cool.. it’s not even funny.
So, here’s the scoop: It’s 1984. And, Judith, is your typical 17 year old. She chain smokes, cuts class, and does many other unsavory things. Heck, she just might be the last sane woman left on the planet. And, when a third-rate cosmetics company creates a pheromone that turns women into crazed man-eaters, the world dives into chaos.
Judith must break her little brother out of juvie, all the while dodging rabid women and the men who hunt them. Already a proven survivor, she picks up some interesting strays along the way, and kicks some serious, and we mean SERIOUS, zombie ass.
See, Judith, she is ALPHA GIRL.
And, folks, this book is FREAKIN’ great. We’re totally stoked, from the incredible artwork, to the clever dialogue, and plot, we love it.
And, you know, it doesn’t hurt that, as children of the ’80s, we have a soft spot for many of the references to pop culture and music from that time period.
Folks: do yourselves a favor, and make sure you snag a copy of ALPHA GIRL #1, we guarantee you’ll be happy you did.

DETECTIVE COMICS #6 – DETECTIVE COMICS CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AS THE DARKEST BATMAN BOOK ON THE STANDS
One of the biggest breakout surprises of the NEW 52 has been DETECTIVE COMICS. We originally were not very impressed by Tony Daniel’s run on BATMAN during the Dick Grayson-era, but holy crap: is DETECTIVE kick-ass or what?
Seriously, we’ve never seen a comic that really captures pure, straight-forward, unadulterated BATMAN like this one. While the flagship BATMAN remains our favorite (sorry, folks, Scott Snyder is reigning supreme with Bats), DETECTIVE is blowing our minds in a big way.
If you’re a fan of BATMAN stories like BATMAN: HUSH, THE KILLING JOKE, or THE LONG HALLOWEEN, we highly recommend DETECTIVE. It has that really timeless, dark, and disturbing BATMAN vibe that so many of those modern classics share.
And, after a killer re-invention of the PENGUIN through the incredible PENGUIN: PAIN AND PREJUDICE series (in stock now!), we’re really looking forward to where things go next in DETECTIVE.
I mean, when you end your very first issue with the Joker’s face being cut off and nailed to a wall.. well, you know you’re in for a treat then.
Haven’t started reading DETECTIVE COMICS yet? We’ve got issues 1-5 in stock now to catch you up to this Wednesday’s issue #6.

MAGIC THE GATHERING #1 – The CCG sensation makes an impressive comics debut this Wednesday, and comes with a FREE exclusive MAGIC THE GATHERING card.
MAGIC THE GATHERING, obviously, is a true force in the realm of gaming. Let me tell you, Third Eye Faithful, if I knew, when I was 12 years old, and buying a starter deck for ICE AGE back in like 1994/1995, that I was seeing the start of something that would become what it is now, well, I would’ve probably kept those cards, instead of selling them to buy more comics. :)
Seriously though, we are stoked about the debut of the brand new ongoing MAGIC THE GATHERING comic series, which will be arriving with a FREE limited edition MAGIC THE GATHERING card with each issue.
As for the content, the story focuses on a brand new Planeswalker, who, in search of greater magical knowledge and on the hunt for the people who destroyed his town, proves why Dack Fayden is the greatest thief in the multiverse.
However, when he gets his hands on his latest prize, though, he has no idea where it will lead him.

AVENGERS: X-SANCTION #3 – THE PRELUDE TO AVENGERS VERSUS X-MEN CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY WITH X-SANCTION #3!
MISSED 1 & 2? WE’VE GOT COPIES IN STOCK TO CATCH YOU UP
The closer we get to AVENGERS VS. X-MEN, the more excited we get. And, folks, the prelude series, X-SANCTION, has been doing an AMAZING job of setting up AVENGERS VERSUS X-MEN.
This breakneck-paced, action-packed monster of a comic has us on the edge of our seats with every issue, and the combination of JEPH LOEB (BATMAN THE LONG HALLOWEEN, BATMAN: HUSH), and ED MCGUINNESS (RED HULK, SUPERMAN/BATMAN) has us freakin’ loving it. Bigger-than-life superhero awesomeness, we cannot get enough of this INCREDIBLE new series.
What is X-SANCTION? The official “first shots fired” are happening NOW in X-SANCTION. Basically, Cable, in the future, learns that the AVENGERS may bring an end to the Hope that he worked so hard to protect for the mutant race. And he is not about to let that happen. With only 24 hours to live as the LEGACY virus is ravaging his body and soul, he’s come back to the present, in a very TERMINATOR-esque fashion, with one mission:
KILL THE AVENGERS.
And, after two shocking issues, we are so pumped for where this one takes us in this week’s X-SANCTION #3. As the fight for the future continues, everyone’s favorite gamma-irradiated bad boy, the Red Hulk, joins the fray.. and well, it’s not pretty, but it is AWESOME.
Missed out on issues 1 & 2? We’ve got copies of each in stock to catch you up.

BRIAN WOOD (writer of DMZ, DEMO, NORTHLANDERS) begins his newest epic THE MASSIVE with a special prelude story in DARK HORSE PRESENTS #8 this Wednesday
It’s no secret that we’re mega-fans of BRIAN WOOD here at Third Eye, and we’re extremely pumped for his upcoming new series THE MASSIVE, as well as his upcoming run of CONAN.
If his past work on stuff like DMZ, NORTHLANDERS, DEMO, and more is any indication, Brian Wood’s THE MASSIVE should deliver one hell of an amazing read, and we cannot wait to see this one kick off.
And, this is why we are STOKED for the release of DARK HORSE PRESENTS #8, which features the very first official chapter of the very special prelude story to THE MASSIVE.
On top of that, you get a brand new BPRD story, and more BEASTS OF BURDEN awesomeness from Jill Thompson and Evan Dorkin.
What’s the scoop on THE MASSIVE? Set in a post-war, post-crash, post-disaster, post-everything world – the environmental action trawler Kapital scours the earth’s oceans for its missing sister ship The Massive, while struggling to redefine its core mission. What does it mean to be an environmentalist after the world’s already ended?
This is the question that THE MASSIVE asks.
A must for fans of DMZ, NORTHLANDERS, and Wood’s other killer work.

ANIMAL MAN #6 – THE NUMBER ONE SLEEPER HIT OF THE DC NEW 52 CONTINUES TO IMPRESS WITH IT’S UNIQUE BLEND OF HORROR AND SUPERHEROICS!
ANIMAL MAN has really stood out as one of my biggest favorites in the DC NEW 52. I had high hopes for the series, because I’m a HUGE fan of JEFF LEMIRE’S past work on stuff like SWEET TOOTH and ESSEX COUNTY, and I have not been disappointed yet.
Using an innovative blend of horror comics sensibilities that conjure up memories of early ’90s VERTIGO comics, and cutting edge post-modern superhero storytelling, ANIMAL MAN brings one of the most unique reads to the NEW 52.
In issue #6 this Wednesday, as we prepare to go headfirst into THE ROT, and ANIMAL MAN and SWAMP THING begin to cross paths, we take a brief moment before-hand to tell the story of the low-budget indie superhero film that Buddy Baker starred in. And, folks: it’s freakin’ great.
This issue, right here, is the exact reason why I love ANIMAL MAN. Unique, clever, and always good, it never disappoints. EVER.
Missed issues 1-5? We’ve got copies of each in stock to catch you up to this Wednesday’s #6.

ED BRUBAKER & SEAN PHILLIPS’S FATALE #2 HITS THIS WEDNESDAY DELIVERING AN EPIC FOLLOW-UP TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF THEIR CRIME NOIR / CTHULHU HORROR MASTERPIECE: FATALE!
FATALE really blew us away with it’s first issue last month, and we really, really dug it. We’re stoked to see the second issue following up hot on the heels of the first, and cannot wait to sit down with this one this week at Third Eye.
In modern times, Nicholas Lash searches for answers about the mysterious woman who ruined his life, while in the mid-1950s, reporter Dominic Raines is drawn down that same murderous path… a true masterpiece of crime-noir storytelling, FATALE has quickly become one of the comics I look forward to the most now.
Admittedly, I’ve always been a huge fan of Brubaker and Phillips’s work together, and really dug their past work on stuff like CRIMINAL and INCOGNITO. So, with them venturing into the realm of horror comics with FATALE… well, you know it’s going to be great.
What’s FATALE about anyways? A reporter in 2012 stumbles on a secret that leads him down the darkest path imaginable to a seductive woman who’s been on the run since 1935, a mobster who may be an immortal demon, and the stories of all the doomed men who’ve been caught in their decades-long struggle. FATALE blends noir and horror to tell a riveting epic unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.
In other words: CRIMINAL meets HP LOVECRAFT-inspired CTHULHU horror.
You can’t go wrong, Third Eye Faithful, TRUST ME.
Missed out on issue #1? You know we’ve still got copies available to catch you up on this incredible new series.

DEFENDERS #3 - MARVEL’S BEST NEW ONGOING SERIES OF 2012 CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY, AND WE ARE HOOKED!
In case ya didn’t know: we love the new DEFENDERS series that kicked off a couple of months ago. And, while there’s numerous reasons why we’re loving this one, nothing tops the big one: it’s non-stop good ol’ fashioned MARVEL UNIVERSE madness in every page. Seriously, you will not find a more fun superhero comic on the stands than the quirky, yet action-packed new DEFENDERS series.
Fraction blends humor, cosmic mystery, and non-stop action into one heck of an entertaining package, as we’re given a new line-up of DEFENDERS, and a whole new assortment of Marvel baddies to throw down against.
With a fan-favorite line-up ranging from the IMMORTAL IRON FIST to DOCTOR STRANGE to SILVER SURFER to NAMOR to RED SHE-HULK, the DEFENDERS balances the dynamics of these interesting and unlikely team-mates with an overall purpose and mission statement: this is the book that connects all of the major happenings in the Marvel Universe. From the events of Phoenix’s upcoming which we know is just gotta be connected to AVENGERS VS. X-MEN to the mystery that surrounds the SECRET AVENGERS, DEFENDERS is the connective tissue in between all of them.
And in this week’s issue #3, we’re taken deep inside the Wundagore Mountain, where the Concordance Engine comes to life, and the DEFENDERS mission snaps into crystal-clear focus.
What happens if this miraculous machine doesn’t do it’s job? And, just how many more of these are hidden around the world?
Plus: who is the secret new member of the team that unveils a conspiracy ten-thousand years in the making?
Missed issues 1 & 2? We’ve got copies in stock to catch you up to this week’s #3.

STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE #5 – THE PENULTIMATE CHAPTER OF THE BREAKOUT IMAGE HIT ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY!
CATCH UP WITH ISSUES 1-5 THIS WEEK, AND PREPARE FOR OUR HUGE SIGNING WITH CREATORS JUSTIN JORDAN & TRADD MOORE SATURDAY 2/18/12
This is the most incredible freakin’ new book we have seen in a very long time.  Seriously: if you are a fan of KICK-ASS, IRREDEEMABLE, THE BOYS, or THE CAPE, you need this freakin’ book in your life.
We really can’t stress how freakin’ awesome the series has been, and we’re really pumped to see where this one heads next, as we near the conclusion of the first limited series.
The penultimate issue of the series delivers a bloody end as Luther tries to rescue Petra. Meanwhile, Pete and Luther’s Mom are left alone to face something… incredibly worse than what we’ve seen thus far.
After the shocking, defining moment of issue #4: we are hooked, and cannot wait to see where things go with this week’s #5.
What is LUTHER STRODE? Picture this: teenage comic fan sends away for one of those CHARLES ATLAS-style GET RIPPED ads in the back of a comic book, and in exchange: he gets jacked up with loads of crazy, crazy power. Taking things to the next level, Luther decides to fashion his own superhero costume, and fight crime… but he quickly realizes, that there’s a sinister motive behind his powers, guiding him to a bloody fate.
This is the series that poses the question: SUPERHERO or SUPER-SLASHER?

LOVING THE BATMAN COURT OF OWLS STORYLINE? DUG BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR? PICK UP THE OFFICIAL PRELUDE TO THE CURRENT NEW 52 BATMAN WITH THIS WEDNESDAY’S BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM TRADE PAPERBACK – AN INCREDIBLE READ BY BLACK MIRROR / BATMAN writer SCOTT SNYDER
As you guys already know: we are huge fans of Scott Snyder, and his work on AMERICAN VAMPIRE, BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR, and his current run of BATMAN with the COURT OF OWLS storyline.
So, when we saw that the trade paperback of BATMAN: GATES OF GOTHAM, the storyline that SNYDER wrote immediately before the NEW 52 began, was hitting this week.. well, we got pretty freakin’ stoked.
This is an official set-up story for much of what’s going down in the NEW 52 with the COURT OF OWLS, and if you are digging on the current stuff happening in Snyder’s BATMAN run, then we HIGHLY recommend picking up this kick-ass little mini-series that wowed the hell out of us over the summer at Third Eye.
When a mystery as old as Gotham City itself surfaces, BATMAN assembles a team of his greatest detectives — ranging from Red Robin, Owlman, and more. As clues are discovered and the mystery deepens, Batman’s team soon finds itself on a journey that explores different eras of Gotham’s history, and touches upon notable Gotham families including the Waynes, the Kanes, and the Elliotts.
In other words: this is the literal ground-up history of Gotham City, and explains just how Batman has managed to not have stumbled upon the Court of Owls until now.
If you’re a big fan of Snyder’s work on other BATMAN, we really feel that you’ll dig GATES OF GOTHAM.

How can THIS not be awesome? As part of IDW’s insane, and over-the-top multiverse spanning crossover event, INFESTATION, where everyone from the Ghostbusters to the Ninja Turtles, are battling it out with Lovecraftian baddies, TRANSFORMERS INFESTATION is a 2-part series pitting a steampunk generation of Transformers, as first seen in the TRANSFORMERS: HEARTS OF STEEL series (trade paperback in stock this Wednesday) against Cthulhu himself.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE VOL.3 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY – THIS BOOK IS LIKE THE BOARDWALK EMPIRE OF HORROR COMICS.. INCREDIBLE, GENERATIONAL STORYTELLING FROM “BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR” WRITER SCOTT SNYDER
I am so, freakin’, stoked to see one of my favorite current series hitting this week in hardcover. I love AMERICAN VAMPIRE, and follow it pretty religiously in the singles, but: I love to sit down with the collected versions, and read through a big slab of it, ’cause it reads so damn good that way.
This nearly 300-page hardcover collects the next slab of AMERICAN VAMPIRE goodness, with AMERICAN VAMPIRE 12-18, as well as the AMERICAN VAMPIRE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST 1-5 limited series.
Both stories taking place in the midst of WORLD WAR II, we follow both the adventures of Pearl’s husband Henry, who joins a clandestine group on a secret mission to Japan to hunt a new breed of vampire. And, then, in Europe, vampire hunters Felicia Book and Cash McCogan go behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied Romania in search of a rumored vampire cure.
Both stories wind into each other in a compelling way, and folks: if you’re already reading AMERICAN VAMPIRE, then you know: this stuff is GOOD.
NOT READING AMERICAN VAMPIRE? OK: here’s the skinny, picture the whole ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA or ONCE UPON TIME IN CHINA-kinda take, but: on vampires. See, the hook is that different regions of the world produce different physiological effects of the vampire infection. And, the star of the show, Skinner Sweet, is the very first American-born Vampire.
From there, we’re taken on a ride that spans generations, beginning in the old West, going through the 1920s, into the 1940s, and even further, AMERICAN VAMPIRE is a fascinating read, with incredible art, and amazing storytelling.
If you’ve dug Snyder’s work on stuff like BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR, or SWAMP THING, then you need to check out AMERICAN VAMPIRE.
We’ve got the graphic novel of AMERICAN VAMPIRE vol.1 in stock now, to get you  on board.

GARTH ENNIS (Writer of THE BOYS, CROSSED, PREACHER) brings his one-woman death squad JENNIFER BLOOD to trade paperback this Wednesday!
Jennifer Blood was the most recent new series to debut from Third Eye fan-favorite, GARTH ENNIS, this past year, and we’ve been loving every minute of it. Conjuring up the grindhouse cinema feel of revenge movies like MS. 45 and THRILLER, Garth Ennis delivers a bloody powerhouse of a read with JENNIFER BLOOD, and it hasn’t disappointed us yet.
By day, Jennifer Blood is a suburban wife and mother, but by night: she is the most ruthless vigilante since Charles Bronson in DEATH WISH. Her family has no idea that the woman who keeps their lives together, is really the urban legend that’s leaving a bloody trail of dead criminals along the streets of their home.
If you were a fan of Garth Ennis’s work on stuff like PUNISHER MAX, especially the WIDOWMAKER arc, or the kick-ass mix of humor, ultra-violence, and action-packed storytelling in his other work like THE BOYS or CROSSED, then JENNIFER BLOOD is a MUST.

STAR WARS: DAWN OF THE JEDI #0 – 25,000 YEARS IN THE PAST. BEFORE LIGHTSABERS. BEFORE THE REPUBLIC. BEFORE THE EMPIRE.
THIS IS THE DAWN OF THE JEDI
FROM THE CREATORS OF STAR WARS LEGACY!
Meet DAWN OF THE JEDI writer JOHN OSTRANDER at ANNAPOLIS COMIC-CON in MARCH
A vastly under-explored era of the STAR WARS UNIVERSE opens up this Wednesday in the highly anticipated STAR WARS: DAWN OF THE JEDI series.
It began with the mysterious pyramid ships — the Thor Yor — scattered to the eight corners of the galaxy, and ended with the establishment of an Order that would change the universe forever.
Here’s the first ever exploration of the Star Wars Universe of 25,000 years ago — before there were lightsabers, when the ties to the force were new before the Jedi spread out into the galaxy.
From the creators of STAR WARS LEGACY, we’re looking at one of the most exciting new STAR WARS series to launch in quite some time.

I think there’s a lot of us who who have fond memories of the epic SPIRITS OF VENGEANCE crossover from the ’90s, and it looks like Marvel is conjuring up some of that magic with this kick-ass new arc, CIRCLE OF FOUR, which features 6 chapters of nearly every bad-ass Marvel anti-hero you can think of.
In CIRCLE OF FOUR chapter one, which begins with this Wednesday’s VENOM #13, the mystery is revealed as what brings GHOST RIDER, RED HULK, X-23, and VENOM together in one bloody free-for-all of supernatural proportions.
What’s the scoop? Well, Hell has literally broken out onto Earth, and it’s started in LAS VEGAS. And, guess who’s responsible? That’s right, Ghost Rider herself.
So, now, X-23, VENOM, and Hulk must go face to face with their dead and forgotten worst enemies, as they buy Ghost Rider time to stop hell’s march across the globe.
And, just who is Ichor, and why has he targeted VENOM as a victim for DEATH?
