Our pick of the week this week is this stellar creator-owned debut from indie superstar SAM HUMPHRIES. HIGHER EARTH is the definition of kick-ass SCI-FI storytelling, and not since WARREN ELLIS, have we seen the kind of hard sci-fi, bigger than life ass-kickery that is on display in HIGHER EARTH.
As many of you know, SAM HUMPHRIES, is a favorite of our’s here at Third Eye, with his work on smash hits like SACRIFICE and OUR LOVE IS REAL. So, when we saw he had a stellar new creator-owned title on the way that explored things like class warfare, and inter dimensional warfare…. well, we just had to dive into this one, folks!
We’ve had a very special limited to our stores only variant cover of HIGHER EARTH #1 put together, which features the heroes of HIGHER EARTH hacking and slashing their way through a sea of the blue, tentacle-bearded three-eyed monsters that you’ve seen all over many of our promotional items.
We’re also going to have Sam on hand this Saturday for a very special HIGHER EARTH launch party to kick off the release of the title. You can get your copy signed by Sam, as well as the first issue of his upcoming new ULTIMATES run which begins this Wednesday in ULTIMATES #10.
So, what is HIGHER EARTH all about? Picture this: SPACE IS DEAD. Why conquer other planets when there’s a perfectly good Earth in the universe next door?

BATMAN: THE COURT OF OWLS HARDCOVER DROPS THIS WEDNESDAY, DELIVERING THE FIRST CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED STORY ARC OF THE NEW 52 BATMAN by SCOTT SNYDER

One of the hottest graphic novel releases of the Summer, BATMAN: THE COURT OF OWLS is the highly anticipated first graphic novel collection of SCOTT SNYDER’S incredible DC NEW 52 BATMAN run, and leads directly into the red hot NIGHT OF THE OWLS arc that’s running through the BATMAN books.
This book has quickly climbed to the top of everyone’s favorites list when it comes to the DC NEW 52, and with the NIGHT OF THE OWLS going into full effect, we can see why.
The one-two-three punch of SCOTT SNYDER (writer of AMERICAN VAMPIRE, BATMAN THE BLACK MIRROR and GATES OF GOTHAM), GREG CAPULLO (legendary artist of SPAWN), and JONATHAN GLAPION make this book into what we like to call: the total package.
Seriously, if you want to know what it felt like to be a fan and reading Frank Miller’s original BATMAN work WHILE it was happening… you need to get into the Snyder/Capullo run.
There’s a unique, indescribable quality here to it, where all we can say is that it’s just… GREAT. It has the dynamic, fluidity and action-packed pacing of Jim Lee’s HUSH, but it also has the noir sensibilities and mystery and intrigue of THE LONG HALLOWEEN. There’s also a strong influence of YEAR ONE and DARK KNIGHT RETURNS in how Gotham and it’s inhabitants are portrayed, and heck, we can even sniff out hints of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini’s BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES when watching the fight sequences that Capullo lays out.
The story focuses on a series of brutal murder that have rocked Gotham to it’s core, causing Batman to realize that perhaps these crimes go far deeper than appearances suggest. As the Caped Crusader begins to unravel this deadly mystery, he discovers a conspiracy going back to his youth and beyond to the origins of the city he’s sworn to protect. Could the Courtt of Owls, once thought to be nothing more than an urban legend, be behind the crime and corruption?
Is there a secret society that’s responsible for the pain, the misery, and the general rottenness of Gotham?
Folks: trust us on this one, you will not buy a better graphic novel this year. Just like BLACK MIRROR blew our minds last Summer, THE COURT OF OWLS will blow your’s this year.

UNCANN X-FORCE IS ONCE AGAIN A MUST-READ!
UNCANNY X-FORCE has been one of the high quality marks of the MARVEL line-up for the last couple of years, with the DARK ANGEL SAGA really bringing a strong showing as one of the best X-MEN story lines we’ve read in YEARS.
Featuring RICK REMENDER as the writer of the title for 25 issues straight, and an all-star cast of artists, UNCANNY X-FORCE constantly impresses the hell out of us.
But, it’s this week’s UNCANNY X-FORCE #25, with the start of the new arc, FINAL EXECUTION, that has us extra-pumped. Why? Well, number one: the art team. Mike McKone and Jerome Opena delivering the kind of artwork that we’ve come to expect out of UNCANNY X-FORCE. While we loved the Otherworld TRIAL OF FANTOMEX arc, we did miss Opena and Brooks on art chores.
McKone brings a very killer style back to the book, and we’re pumped to see him on board.
Secondly… FINAL EXECUTION seems to be really building on the plot points that Remender has built in his APOCALYPSE SOLUTION and DARK ANGEL SAGA arcs.
From the start, we’re asked the question: Who are the Omegas and why is X-Force tasked with hunting them down for termination?
This one looks to be a saga that captures the same kind of high adventure spirit that DARK ANGEL SAGA did, bringing a new school approach to classic X-Men storytelling.
And, this week’s issue #25 is the PERFECT issue to jump on board with, and get into UNCANNY X-FORCE.

DAN THE UNHARMABLE #1 DELIVERS PURE SLICE OF LIFE CRIME NOIR MADNESS FROM AVATAR PRESS, PUBLISHERS OF CROSSED, FERALS, NEONOMICON & MORE!

Plus, the main character looks like Buzz from THE MELVINS, how can you not love it?
Dan the Unharmable looks KICK-ASS. First off.. it’s a crime comic by the master of crime comics, DAVID LAPHAM, writer of STRAY BULLETS. While I won’t go into the details of why STRAY BULLETS still remains one of my all-time favorite reads, I will say this: Lapham can write crime. Secondly, it’s being published by the one and only AVATAR PRESS, the fine folks responsible for bringing you mayhem and misery in books like CROSSED and FERALS. So far: this is a winning combo.
Seriously though, this book is a blast, and is a fresh, fun new spin on the crime comics genre, bringing an ultra-violent sense of dark humor to the book.
This new series follows a carefree amnesiac whose happily low standard of living is supported by dangerous odd jobs — a type he’s uniquely suited for, since he cannot be injured or feel pain. The invulnerable protagonist is drawn into a modern Hollywood murder mystery involving an old flame and their orphaned kids.
So, it’s a very BLUE ESTATE by way of PULP FICTION kind of kick-assery, as we’re shown this lovable loser who cannot be hurt. Bullets, fire, drowning, whatever, nothing can hurt him. And, see, that’s also psychological. Nothing riles him up. Nothing bothers him. And, from there, this character is thrown into a situation he can’t ignore. Four orphaned kids, a mother brutally murdered in the style of a classic Hollywood murder… even the most hardened man alive can’t ignore this.
Folks, DAN THE UNHARMABLE is a MUST, and I highly recommend giving it a shot this Wednesday at Third Eye!

A CAN’T MISS, MUST-READ SEQUEL TO THE ORIGINAL STORY OF FRANKENSTEIN!
Bernie Wrightson is the definition of comics legend. He’s one of those rare superstar creators whose work has just gotten better and better with the length of time he’s spent in the industry, and his most famous work, is the graphic novella adaptation of MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN.
This masterpiece is so damn good, so well-done, heck, I have a print from it in my living room, that’s how much I love it. It’s just an amazing testament to what horror comics, heck, what comics as a whole, can be.
So, when we saw that those crafty, talented folks at IDW were working to put together a sequel to the project, with horror comics superstar and creator of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, STEVE NILES, on board to pen it… well, we got pretty damn stoked.
Now, Wrightson returns to the world of Frankenstein and his monster, with a story that picks up at the end of the original Frankenstein story, and follows the monster’s miserable journeys.
A must-read for any monster kid, new school, or old school, you’ll freakin’ love it.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN: NEW AVENGERS #26 *AVENGERS VS X-MEN TIE-IN* - THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PHOENIX IS REVEALED IN THE BOOK OF DEAD IRON FISTS!

Whether it’s the secret origin of how CINDERELLA became a top secret super-spy, or the current arc which explores the Snow Queen capturing Briar Rose and Ali Baba, while Fairy Godmothers run amok, this book is fresh, and fantastic, and we can’t get enough.

SCARLET SPIDER #5 – ONE OF MARVEL’S BEST RELEASES OF 2012 CONTINUES TO GET BETTER & BETTER!
Folks, I know I keep preaching about how much this book rocks my socks, but seriously: SCARLET SPIDER is good stuff! We love this RED HOOD-esque take on the classic Marvel icon of the ’90s, and the creative team of CHRIS YOST and RYAN STEGAMAN have done an amazing job thus far with the book.
This week’s SCARLET SPIDER #5 continues to impress, as the PETER PARKER clone gone wrong, Kaine, finds a nuclear bomb ticking in his newfound home… and, it’s up to him to stop it.
Meanwhile, it turns out the AVENGERS themselves aren’t too keen on Scarlet Spider’s activities, and are about to step in with his brutal, no holds barred method of fighting crime.
Folks, if the MARVEL UNIVERSE ever had their own spin on the RED HOOD, it’d be the SCARLET SPIDER, and we love it.

Takio is a must-read, folks, with an all-ages, all-new superhero adventure for a new generation. Taki and Olivia are sisters with superpowers. In fact, they are the only ones in the world with superpowers. So obviously, they have to become superheroes, right? But is the world ready for real-life superheroes? Are the girls ready for the challenge? And will the accident that made them who they are reveal secrets that will change their lives forever? The answers are no, no, and yes.
A must-read, and a perfect book for all ages, TAKIO is a blast, folks, and we highly recommend checking it out this Wednesday.

RYAN: EARTH 2 #1 - WOW! I’m not even a huge DC guy but this was an awesome read. Great art, great story.
