This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 6/20/12

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #6 – ACT TWO BEGINS WITH THIS WEEK’S SIXTH ISSUE OF AVENGERS VS X-MEN.
We. Are. So. Pumped!
Avengers vs X-Men has really proven itself to be a top notch event storyline, through and through, and we really cannot get enough of how fantastic this book has been.
I mean, it literally is everything that you could ask for out of a kick-ass, bigger-than-life comic book event, and with the startling conclusion in last week’s #5… well, crap, we are so stoked for these next 6 issues.
I think it’s safe to say that by now, many of you have had the chance to sit down with Avengers vs. X-Men #5, and read through it, so you’re probably well aware of just why the team is rocking these menacing Phoenix costumes..
For those of you who haven’t read yet, well, lets just say there’s a little bit of a swerve about who the Phoenix was really coming to possess, and folks: the result is pure genius!
As we get further into AVX, I have this really strong sense of feeling that the conclusion to this whole event will leave the entire Marvel Universe changed, and hey, wasn’t it just last September that we saw the entire landscape of the DC UNIVERSE forever changed?
Very intriguing stuff, Third Eye Faithful!
Not reading AVENGERS VS X-MEN? I’ll give you the rundown in a nutshell: so, Hope, was the first mutant born since the whole M-Day thing that happened in the aftermath of HOUSE OF M. She’s pretty important, right? Well, when the AVENGERS catch wind that HOPE may be the host for a recently returning PHOENIX FORCE, much like JEAN GREY was… well, they get a bit disturbed. See, the PHOENIX means death, death, and more death.
But, Cyclops, well, he’s not letting the Avengers take the one salvation the mutant race has… and, well, then everything turns upside down, when we find out that the PHOENIX has actually come to inhabit the bodies of Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frosst, Namor, and Magick. Yes, not just one “Dark Phoenix” here, folks, but an entire TEAM of Phoenix beings.
And, now, the Phoenix is set to eradicate mankind, and “cleanse” Earth as we know it.
And, the AVENGERS? Still at war with the X-Men, but, now, with a MUCH bigger problem at hand.
We cannot wait to see where this goes next!
Wanna get on board? Not only do we have issues 0-6 in stock and available to get you up to speed this week, but we also have ALL of the AVX tie-ins in stock and available to get you current as well.

TH3RD WORLD STUDIOS, publishers of STUFF OF LEGEND, launches red-hot new indie urban fantasy FINDING GOSSAMYR this WEDNESDAY!
A must for fans of FABLES, BONE, THE AMULET, and STUFF OF LEGEND
Featuring an exclusive THIRD EYE COMICS cover by SKULLKICKERS artist EDWIN HUANG!
Very limited distribution, only available in under 50 stores nation-wide! Snag your’s now!
Here’s a big one, Third Eye Faithful… we’ve been hyped for this ever since the special sneak peek preview event we did where Th3rd World announced the project for the first time.
Now, fast forward about many months, and the highly anticipated first issue of FINDING GOSSAMYR is arriving this Wednesday, and folks, it’s amazing.
The artwork alone will wow you, and it looks like something that’s completely unique to the world of comics. I mean, this could be a freakin’ Pixar movie, I’m telling you, that’s how great it looks. The sheer emotion, and expression that Ellteron delivers with each and every character is incredible, and it really pairs with the story to tell a powerful tale.
And, what a tale it is, David Rodriguez, makes an impressive splash with FINDING GOSSAMYR, bringing a modern fantasy story that captivates, and immerses us into something that’s just plain amazing. This is the kind of 21st century modern day fantasy storytelling that will leave it’s mark, for many years to come, folks, and we cannot recommend it enough.
Much like series like THE AMULET, Jeff Smith’s BONE, FABLES, MOUSE GUARD, and Th3rd World’s own STUFF OF LEGEND, FINDING GOSSAMYR finds itself a unique niche in the realm of accessible, modern day fantasy comics that can reach all ages.
What’s this one all about? Picture the movie A BEAUTIFUL MIND by way of NARNIA, as we’re shown the story of a brilliant young boy named Denny who solves the most perplexing puzzle in the history of mankind, and in doing so, he and his caretaker sister, Jenna, find themselves transported to the fantastic land of Gossamyr, where math is magic, and the boy’s unique condition gives him incredible power.
This is the kind of killer read that nearly anyone can pick up and enjoy, and we guarantee you, the sublime blend of strong storytelling, high-adventure fantasy magic and monsters, and the geeky fun of math equations being used as weaponry will win you over in a big way.
With STUFF OF LEGEND being in negotiations to get picked up by DISNEY for a major motion picture, the Th3rd World guys are really on the rise, and we really are proud to have been proudly promoting their great comics from day 1.
On another tip, there’s something else that remains pretty unique about FINDING GOSSAMYR. The first issue was initially micro-distributed (like SACRIFICE and SCAM) to a very select amount of comic shops in the country, and will not be made widely available through Diamond (in a new printing) until later in the Summer… which means this book is going to be HOT. The demand is growing, and with such a quality premise, we’re already getting lots of requests to snag a copy, so make sure you grab your’s this week at Third Eye!
Also, for the cover price of only $3.99, you can get the very limited THIRD EYE COMICS exclusive cover of FINDING GOSSAMYR #1 featuring a custom cover by SKULLKICKERS artist EDWIN HUANG.

BEFORE WATCHMEN: THE COMEDIAN #1 — BRIAN AZZARELLO (JOKER, 100 BULLETS, FLASHPOINT BATMAN) and J.G JONES (FINAL CRISIS, WANTED) team up for one of the most anticipated WATCHMEN prequels
BEFORE WATCHMEN has been a smash hit for DC so far, and folks, in terms of sheer quality, I have been floored with both MINUTEMEN and SILK SPECTRE. Two AMAZING reads, with AMAZING art, I really cannot express how much I have dug these books.
Now, DC is bringing the thunder once again with one of our own personally most anticipated BEFORE WATCHMEN books, THE COMEDIAN, by BRIAN AZZARELLO (writer of 100 BULLETS and JOKER), and J.G. JONES (artist of WANTED and FINAL CRISIS).
The Comedian has always been my personal favorite character in WATCHMEN, partially because the bastards are always the most interesting characters, but also because he’s the only character in the whole story who’s not delusional about what he is, even though what he is happens to be a sociopathic monster.
With the amazingly talented Azzarello penning this one, and J.G. JONES handling art, you know you’re in for a treat, and all I can say, Third Eye Faithful, is that: WOW. They have really outdone themselves with the level of sheer violence, and disturbing content with THE COMEDIAN. There’s also a strange sense of sorrow that runs through the book as an under-current, and that makes it even more interesting.
Seriously, BEFORE WATCHMEN continues to impress with another piece of amazingly talented comic book goodness.
Need to get caught up? We’ve got BEFORE WATCHMEN MINUTEMEN and BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE in stock now to get you up to speed on the previous two prequel books that have shipped.

MARS ATTACKS #1 — THE GRUESOME, GORY, SHLOCKY AWESOMENESS OF MARS ATTACKS RETURNS IN ALL IT’S GLORY THIS WEDNESDAY COURTESY OF IDW PUBLISHING, featuring CHEW writer JOHN LAYMAN as writer!
Issue #1 has 55(!) covers, each featuring original card art from the series!
You know, I feel pretty damn lucky to be a child of the ’80s, and ’90s. There was so much cool stuff coming out then, and while MARS ATTACKS were originally released way back in the day, it was during the ’80s that I remember them resurfacing alongside DINOSAURS ATTACK at the 7-11 near my house. I remember skateboarding there, and snagging packs of these things, and freaking out over how awesome the gruesome art on them was.
You could say, I’m a pretty big MARS ATTACKS fan. So, when I saw that IDW was teaming up with CHEW writer JOHN LAYMAN to serve up a new MARS ATTACKS comics series, well, heck, I flipped my wig. Seriously. I’m so stoked for this, it’s ridiculous.
And, folks, it’s a blast, a really fun read, from start to finish. Layman brings the manic craziness he has brought to CHEW to this world of crazed Martians hellbent on mutilating the human-race, and scorching our world to dust.
Another cool little tidbit about this series is how issue #1, literally features 55 (!) different covers, each one representing one of the original MARS ATTACKS! trading cards, and the back covers featuring the original card art that told the story.
Too freakin’ cool, Third Eye Faithful, TOO FREAKIN’ COOL!
Snag a copy this Wednesday, and jump aboard this gory, blast from the past with a new school spin from the folks who’ve kicked ass with their recent TMNT, TRANSFORMERS, and other revivals.

SAGA #4 — One of our favorite new series continues to impress again and again!
SAGA.. is probably my favorite comic I’m reading. Seriously. This book continues to keep on impressing us, issue after issue, time after time, it’s just THAT good, Third Eye Faithful, and we can’t really say it’s because of this one thing, or that one thing.. it’s just all-around good.
SAGA is just an amazing example of what comics can do, what they’re capable of, and why we love them. It’s the kind of timeless storytelling, and unique immersion into a story that you’ll only find in the paper and ink pages of a comic, and we really cannot get enough of this book.
Not reading it? In a nutshell, here’s the jist: it’s A GAME OF THRONES meets STAR WARS, with a splash of FIREFLY. If you took the gritty, and sometimes gruesome world of A GAME OF THRONES, mixed in the epic sci-fi space opera feel of STAR WARS, and then had the snap of Whedon’s dialogue and characters.. you’d get SAGA.
Written by BRIAN K. VAUGHAN (of RUNAWAYS and Y THE LAST MAN fame), with art by the super talented FIONA STAPLES, SAGA is the ultimate in sci-fi fantasy. A perfect meeting of real world storytelling, fantastic realms, and hyper-charged action…. it really is the best of all it’s parts.
Following a man and woman, who just by being in love, are committing treason against their warring planets, and are in a desperate chase to protect their child, SAGA has really unfolded quite a story in just 3 issues.
Ghost kids, spider-lady bounty hunters, robot people with TV heads…. it’s amazing. And, now, we’re shown the mystery of Sextillion, a distant planet where even your darkest desires become reality.
GET THIS COMIC, folks, you will love it.
We’ve got issues 1-3 of SAGA in stock now to catch you up in time for this Wednesday’s #4.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #51 MARKS THE HISTORIC WEDDING OF NORTHSTAR AND KYLE THIS WEDNESDAY
This Wednesday delivers the biggest wedding to hit Marvel Comics since Scott Summers and Jean Grey, almost two decades ago.
This landmark issue delivers a historic first for the Marvel Universe, and the start of a major story arc, leading into the upcoming new X-Treme X-Men title due out later this year.
Featuring a who’s who of the Marvel Universe, including some guests that may surprise you. This is a big issue, folks, and will go down in comic book history for it’s significance.
And, it was a pretty awesome read too, with Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins doing a great job of telling a great story while at the same time delivering a very historic, and newsworthy issue of ASTONISHING X-MEN.
Wanna get on board? We’ve still got copies of the ASTONISHING X-MEN #50, which featured the proposal, as well as ASTONISHING X-MEN #49, which kicked off the full story arc.
Snag yourself copies of each this Wednesday, and grab a copy of ASTONISHING X-MEN #51.

NIGHTWING #10 THE REPUBLIC OF TOMORROW, TODAY CHAPTER ONE — A GREAT JUMPING ON POINT FOR THIS STELLAR NEW 52 TITLE! START HERE!
With NIGHT OF THE OWLS nearing it’s end, and the crossover having ended it’s tie-in issues, all we can say is that the most impressive stand-out had to be NIGHTWING (outside of the flagship Bat-book that is).
This book fits the most closely to the vision that Snyder’s BATMAN brings, and we love the characterization of Dick Grayson in it.
We know that the series is already 10 issues in, but fear not, this week’s NIGHTWING #10 is the PERFECT issue to jump aboard with if you’re a new reader and haven’t gotten into the series yet from the beginning.
Chapter one of the story arc “THE REPUBLIC OF TOMORROW, TODAY” begins, as Nightwing investigates a double murder in OLD GOTHAM that happens to feature a part of his costume as evidence.
New villains are introduced with the REPUBLIC OF TOMORROW, and their leader Paragon, and we can’t help but wonder… what kind of tidbits will we see from OLD GOTHAM?
Hop aboard one of the best Bat-family books out, and give this one a shot, Third Eye Faithful!

WALKING DEAD #99 — SOMETHING TO FEAR CHAPTER 3 ARRIVES, CONTINUING THE COUNTDOWN TO WALKING DEAD #100.. ARE YOU READY FOR THE BIGGEST STORY ARC IN WALKING DEAD HISTORY?
The WALKING DEAD continues to be one of the most exciting comics on the stands, and as the countdown to issue #100 continues, we are losing our minds with anticipation for where this series is taking us next.
Been reading WALKING DEAD in trade paperback, and waiting to jump on? Now is the PERFECT time. WALKING DEAD VOL.16 ends at issue #96, and we’ve got plenty of issues 97, 98, and now, this week’s 99, to get you current in time for WALKING DEAD #100.
As for what’s actually been going down? Well, we can’t say a word, ’cause lets face it: the spoilers are brutal in this book, and that’s half the fun.
All we’ll say is this: this is the most exciting we’ve seen WALKING DEAD since the fateful events of #49.
Not reading the series yet? Snag a copy of WALKING DEAD VOLUME 1 this week, and jump on board for only $10, we promise: YOU WILL LOVE THIS COMIC.
WALKING DEAD #100 Release Party — We are doing a very special MIDNIGHT release party for the WALKING DEAD #100, in collaboration with IMAGE COMICS.
We’ll be running some very special sales and promotions on various WALKING DEAD, and other IMAGE COMICS-related titles, as well as running a VERY cool raffle for a gigantic WALKING DEAD poster that is signed by ROBERT KIRKMAN (writer of WALKING DEAD) and CHARLIE ADLARD.

BALTIMORE: DR LESKOVAR’S REMEDY #1 — Lord Baltimore returns in another slice of vampire-hunting awesomeness!
BALTIMORE: DR LESKOVAR’S REMEDY #1 brings the return of our favorite WORLD WAR I-era vampire killer, LORD BALTIMORE, and we’re pretty damn pumped to see him back in action.
Mike Mignola’s BALTIMORE stories are pieces of pure pulp fiction awesomeness with each and every installment, and we really cannot get enough of them.
In the new DR LESKOVAR’S REMEDY, an army of malformed vampires controls a small Croatian town, but Lord Henry Baltimore arrives to put an end to this madness, fighting his way to their creator — a twisted surgeon akin to Moreau and Mengele!
The work that Mignola and Golden do on the BALTIMORE stories is top notch, a grim, and gritty gothic vigilante that’s steeped in the kind of mythology and folklore Mignola’s work is known for.
Highly recommended, folks, and if you’re curious about past BALTIMORE adventures… we’d recommend snagging BALTIMORE THE PLAGUE SHIPS trade paperback, and the new BALTIMORE THE CURSE BELLS hardcover.

AVENGERS VS X-MEN: NEW AVENGERS #27– HOPE VENTURES TO THE MAGICAL CITY OF K’UN L’UN… AND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE IRON FIST AND PHOENIX FORCE IS REVEALED!
The tie-ins for AVENGERS VS X-MEN have really been bang-up great, and we really cannot get enough of what Marvel has been doing in these. It’s rare that an event has such a consistently high quality for it’s tie-in titles, but man, AVX HAS it in a big way.
The tie-ins running through NEW AVENGERS have been pretty big favorites, as they’ve done an amazing job of expanding on the mythology behind the PHOENIX, and it’s connections to other mystical parts of the Marvel Universe, like the power of the IRON FIST.
Now, with Hope and the NEW AVENGERS venturing into the home of the IMMORTAL IRON FIST, K’UN L’UN… things are about to get real.
Wanna get caught up? We’ve got NEW AVENGERS 24,25 & 26 in stock now, which are the first 3 chapters of this tie-in event. We also have all other AVX tie-ins available and in stock now as well.

LOVE ANIMAL MAN? LOVE MONSTERS? LOVE JEFF LEMIRE’S TOTALLY RAD WRITING? THEN GET THIS: FRANKENSTEIN – AGENT OF S.H.A.D.E VOL1: WAR OF THE MONSTERS TRADE PAPERBACK
FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF SHADE has been one of the big cult favorites of the NEW 52 around here at Third Eye, and folks, we are telling you: you have to give this book a shot. It is so much freakin’ fun, it’s ridiculous.
Written by ANIMAL MAN creator JEFF LEMIRE, FRANKENSTEIN: AGENT OF SHADE explores the concept of Frankenstein’s Monster as having traveled, and adventured throughout history after that fateful falling out with his creator.
Now, in the present day, Frankenstein is part of a network of strange beings who work for an even stranger government organization: the Super Human Advanced Defense Executive, also known as SHADE.
Frankenstein leads his cover-ops team of freaks, monsters, and the kind of weirdo awesomes you could only find in comics, against supernatural threats even more strange and dangerous than themselves.
Picture HELLBOY in the DCU written by the dude who does ANIMAL MAN.
Sounds awesome, right? It is! Now, snag yourself a copy of the trade paperback this Wednesday, and find out why we’re all about it

SAM HUMPHRIES, writer of SACRIFICE, continues to wow the heck out of us with his sci-fi epic HIGHER EARTH this Wednesday in HIGHER EARTH #2
Dimension-Hopping Han Solo Awesomeness? Yes!
HIGHER EARTH is one of my favorite new series to launch this year, with it’s pitch-perfect spin on iconic sci-fi concepts, and settings.
This book is INCREDIBLE. If you’re a fan of stuff like SAGA, then you’ll really dig the very similar galaxy-spanning adventuring feel of HIGHER EARTH
We were pretty honored to have Sam out at Third Eye last month to kick off HIGHER EARTH, and we’re just as stoked about issue #2 dropping this week.
Even by the conclusion of HIGHER EARTH #1, we’re still left with a sense of wonder, and intrigue, but in a good way. It’s really an impressive world that Humphries manages to build in just one issue, and we’re really stoked to see further exploration this week.
What’s it about? In HIGHER EARTH, there are multiple Earths, hundreds of them, and our story begins on the one that’s used as a garbage dump. Seriously, a literal garbage dump. And, from there, we’re thrown into the action, of a story where planets die out fast and furious, and the human race is hopping from dimension to dimension in search of better ones.
And, then there’s HIGHER EARTH, which is the 1% of the Earths, the elite of the elite, and the goal of our two heroes.
Sword fights, bear-skin mech suits, and the best damn comic book interpretation of HAN SOLO that we’ve seen.. HIGHER EARTH is a must-read, Third Eye Faithful.
Missed #1? Not only do we still have a limited amount of the THIRD EYE HIGHER EARTH variant, but we also have the regular $1.00 edition of HIGHER EARTH #1 available too to get you up to speed!

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES MICRO-SERIES #5: SPLINTER featuring the artwork of STUFF OF LEGEND’S CP WILSON III!
I know we’ve been beating the drum and rallying on about how much we love IDW’s revival of the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES.
Seriously, they get it. They’re channeling the gritty dark tone of the original underground TMNT comix, while bringing a new school, modern edge to the characters, and it works really, really well.
In addition to the regular TMNT ongoing series, they’ve been kicking out the jams on the TMNT Micro-Series one-shots, which have been just plain stellar.
These stand-alone one-shot stories tie into the current TMNT continuity, while focusing on each individual character that’s vital to the TMNT mythos.
This week, we’re shown Splinter, as he’s face to face with the man who killed his family so many years ago. This story takes a look back at the entire life of Splinter, including his secret life as Hamato Yoshi. A soul-searching, startling revelation for Splinter will change his, and his son’s lives forever.
Plus, it’s got STUFF OF LEGEND’s own CP WILSON III on art chores!

AVENGERS VS X-MEN: SECRET AVENGERS #28 — THE KREE HOMEWORLD STANDS IN THE PHOENIX’S PATH… AND THE SET-UP FOR THE NEW CAPTAIN MARVEL SERIES CONTINUES!
SECRET AVENGERS continues on to be a stellar read with UNCANNY X-FORCE writer RICK REMENDER bringing the ass-kickery in a big way to the book.
But, what’s most exciting, is the kind of subtle set-up that this story arc is providing for the upcoming new MS. MARVEL aka CAPTAIN MARVEL series that’ll be launching later in the Summer.
This week in SECRET AVENGERS #28, the Avengers have devised a way to save the Kree home world from the Phoenix, but one man stands in their way — Captain Marvel!
Can Ms. Marvel and The Protector break free of Minister Marvel’s influence to aid their former companions?
When all else fails, one Avenger will make the ultimate sacrifice…. and the question is: will his death be enough?
Folks, this book is getting seriously crazy, and we’re loving every second of it.
Rick Remender and Rentao Guedes are one hell of a great team on here.

GARTH ENNIS’S THE SHADOW CONTINUES THIS WEDNESDAY IN THE SHADOW #3 — THE MOST VIOLENT PULP HERO GETS EVEN BLOODIER!
FROM THE CREATOR BEHIND “CROSSED”, “THE BOYS”, “PUNISHER MAX”, and more!
Garth Ennis really was a perfect fit for the new SHADOW series from DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT. He’s doing a fantastic job of really bringing the grit, and grime of the original SHADOW pulp novels to the new comic in a big way, while managing to still keep the book feeling modern, and sleek.
Not holding back, Ennis doesn’t shy away from delivering the ultra-violence in the new SHADOW comics, and we’re loving it. Now, as the story continues, we see the Shadow has set a trap for his foes, but neither Taro Kondo nor the fearsome Buffalo Wong are inclined to step into it without taking certain precautions. A night of slaughter in the Shanghai underworld sees Margo Lane learning just how high the stakes are, and how far her master will go to win his deadly game.
If you were a fan of the dark tone of Ennis’s PUNISHER MAX series, then the new SHADOW title is definitely for you. It’s a fantastic read, and from the noir tone set by Aaron Campbell’s art to Ennis’s dark storytelling.. it downright rules.
Wanna get on board? We’ve got issues 1 & 2 in stock and available now to catch you up to this week’s #3.

GRIM LEAPER #2 — KURTIS J. WIEBE, writer of PETER PANZERFAUST, TELLS A KILLER STORY THAT’S ONE PART QUANTUM LEAP, AND ONE PART SHAUN OF THE DEAD. A HORRIFIC ROMANTIC COMEDY FROM IMAGE COMICS!
The first issue of GRIM LEAPER was a blast, and we really dig the killer new tale that Kurtis J. Wiebe, writer of PETER PANZERFAUST, is weaving with this series.
What’s the story behind GRIM LEAPER? Well, there’s this guy, and he keeps dying, and coming back, but each time taking over a different body. He never tends to stick around long, cause death always tends to find him to reclaim.
Now, here’s where it becomes more than just a zombie riff on QUANTUM LEAP, but a full-blown tale of awesomeness, as our hero finds out he’s not the only one with this problem.
And, thus, a romance blooms.. two folks that can’t stay dead, and can’t keep themselves in the same bodies long enough to hook up.
A lot of fun, Third Eye Faithful, if you didn’t snag it already, grab a copy of #1 (in stock now) this week and hop aboard!

LOST DOGS Graphic Novel — ANIMAL MAN and SWEET TOOTH writer JEFF LEMIRE delivers an amazing, harrowing, dark read with this graphic novel for only $10!
Here it is, Third Eye Faithful, the book that first brought major attention to the amazingly talented JEFF LEMIRE (writer of ANIMAL MAN and SWEET TOOTH), in a new completely remastered edition, soaked with blood and ink.
This little slice of awesome spins a mythic yarn that follows a family man who’s larger than life — but even he may not be powerful enough to prevent the lost of everything he’s ever known.
Bold, brutal, and emotionally raw, LOST DOGS delivers the kind of storytelling that Lemire has brought to the masses in ANIMAL MAN and SWEET TOOTH in an even more raw, more in-your-face kind of capacity. This is a straight up tragedy, and Lemire does it PERFECTLY.
