This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 9/5/12

DC'S ZERO MONTH BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY!
This month marks a huge event in comics. The one year anniversary of the now-classic NEW 52 relaunch of DC Comics. One year into the NEW 52, and I can tell you, folks: it worked. It really has done a fantastic job of reinvigorating the characters and stories of the DCU, and has gotten us excited abotu so many more DC titles than we had been before.
Now, as we move forward into September, DC is doing something that is as equally as bold as the original NEW 52 relaunch: the DC NEW 52 Zero month.
With a full roster of their titles each receiving a special Zero issue, including a line-up of a few new ‘New 52′ titles replacing ones that will be going away this year, DC is set to blow us away all over again.
The Zero issues are special one-shot issues that serve as special bridges into the next big story arcs of these series. Each one not only delivers the NEW 52 origins of these characters, providing a very crucial and very unique insight into what makes the NEW 52 universe itself so new and different in comparison to the old DCU, but also they serve as a set-up for the next big arc of each character.
In other words, if you got into the NEW 52 late, and you’re looking for that second chance to jump on board, these are the issues to grab.
This Wednesday, the ZERO issues start rolling in, and one of the biggest is the brand new DETECTIVE COMICS #0, which shows us the earliest days of Batman and his training.
This special #0 issue is the perfect point for both new and old readers to jump aboard DETECTIVE in anticipation of the next big story arc in the series (which just so happens to be written by CHEW scribe JOHN LAYMAN!).
We’re given a very cool look at a young Bruce Wayne, and the training he must endure to become the Dark Knight. Along the way, we’re going to be shown crucial elements and additions to his origin that help make the big differences in the DC NEW 52′s BATMAN series.
We really thought that this issue both read and looked great, with Tony Daniel delivering a stunning looking book.

ALAN MOORE RETURNS WITH A BRAND NEW COMIC SERIES… FASHION BEAST! FROM AVATAR PRESS, PUBLISHERS OF CROSSED & NEONOMICON!
THE MOST HORRIFYING COMIC OF 2012
Any time ALAN MOORE comes back to comics, we take notice, and with this week’s FASHION BEAST, we’re pretty damn stoked. I mean, this is Alan Moore + Horror Comics? How can that not be a great combo?
As many of you remember, Moore was the mad genius behind NEONOMICON, the most disturbing take on the mythology of HP LOVECRAFT that I think we’ve ever read here at Third Eye. So, we’ve got some pretty high expectations for the sheer terror that FASHION BEAST is set to induce.
Now, wanna hear something really interesting? Moore has had a little help making Fashion Beast a reality, as the guerilla marketing genius and all around shadowy pop culture guru, Malcom McLaren, has loaned his insight to Moore’s tale. McLaren, many of you might remember, was the man responsible for crafting the identity and image of the Sex Pistols back in the UK during the ’70s, and was a father to the UK Punk movement, and it’s aesthetics.
Alan Moore & Malcom McLaren teaming up? On a title from AVATAR PRESS? This book is looking better, and better.
So, what IS Fashion Beast all about? It’s Alan Moore re-imagining the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, but set against the backdrop of a dystopian future city dominated by a fashion house.
Moore takes the same kind of iconoclast approach that he’s used in stories like WATCHMEN and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN, to craft a story that showcases a bleak future dominated by corporate fashion designers, and the brand symbols they use as occult sigils to control the masses. All the while, the timeless tale of Beauty and the Beast, is told amidst this post-apocalyptic tale of class war, corporate control, and more.
Folks: FASHION BEAST is a must-read science fiction / horror masterpiece that will grab a hold of you and NOT let go. We give it our highest recommendation. If you’re already reading series like CROSSED, FERALS, or were a fan of NEONOMICON, then you will love the newest addition to the horrific line-up of titles that AVATAR PRESS is delivering.

HAWKEYE’S NEW ONGOING SOLO SERIES IS A HIT! WE CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU GUYS THINK OF THIS WEEK’S HAWKEYE #2
The new HAWKEYE ongoing series from Marvel is really one of the best damn things we’ve seen from Marvel this year. Seriously, this is the kind of book we want to see coming out of Marvel, and as one of the “early birds” of the MARVEL NOW line-up, we feel that this book is a perfect emissary for what’s to come.
Matt Fraction and David Aja, the creative team behind the modern classic IMMORTAL IRON FIST run, pair up to bring a unique, and fresh spin on the classic Avenger, dropping him in the midst of a very, very shady town, with some very, very shady inhabitants.
The noir stylings of Aja’s art is reminiscent of Mazzuchelli on BATMAN YEAR ONE, and Fraction’s approach to HAWKEYE: a modern day Robin Hood, is pretty damn perfect.
This is a dark, moody story, where Hawkeye’s stealing from the rich, and giving to the poor. Whether the rich are corrupt bankers in skyscrapers, or local gangsters, no one is safe from Hawkeye.
The mix of action-packed storytelling, clever dialogue, and subtle humor makes this book a must-read.
Don’t sleep on this one, Third Eye Faithful, Hawkeye is following the same trail as Waid’s DD, to being one of the most talked about Marvel books of the year.

J.SCOTT CAMPBELL BRINGS THE CLASSIC ICONS OF EVERYONE’S FAVORITE FAIRY-TALES TO LIFE WITH THE BRAND NEW SERIES
DAMSELS IN THIS WEDNESDAY’S DAMSELS #1
When J. Scott Campbell launches a new project, we tend to take notice, and this week’s DAMSELS from Dynamite Ent looks to be the biggest thing he’s done in quite some time.
In DAMSELS #1, we’re taken into a world where all those classic iconic princess and femme fatales of folklore and fairy tale are the real deal, and share their own problems.
The story starts with young Rapa wishing she had not got out of bed that morning, if she had a bed to get out of that is. The day began badly and isn’t getting any better.
A series of peculiar and baffling encounters throw obstacle after obstacle into her path, intent on preventing her progress.
And, as the walls of reality begin to crumble, and the castles of a far off land begin to take shape, she realizes that there’s more out there than she had thought.
Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and more, the DAMSELS brings them to comics this Wednesday in DAMSELS #1.

ACTION COMICS #0 – GRANT MORRISON CRAFTS A TALE OF SUPERMAN’S EARLIEST DAYS IN THE NEW 52, AS WE READ: THE BOY WHO STOLE SUPERMAN’S CAPE!
Another DC Zero Month MUST-HAVE is the brand new ACTION COMICS #0, which details the origins of the one and only MAN OF STEEL in the DC NEW 52.
As one of the characters that have seen more fundamental changes than others, we think that this one is even more so a must-read, as Grant Morrison weaves a crucial tale of Clark Kent’s earliest days arriving in Metropolis, and taking the steps from Clark to Superman.
A fantastic stand-alone read, the Boy Who Stole Superman’s Cape, is the kind of story that we’d expect from Morrison, and could sit so nicely alongside classics like Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? and For the Man Who Has Everything.
Plus: the artwork in this one by Ben Oliver and Cafu is AMAZING!
This issue serves as a great jumping on point for new readers as well, and is a great spot to come on board one of the coolest ongoing SUPERMAN titles we’ve read in quite some time. Trust us, folks: Morrison + Superman: always awesome.

GUARDING THE GLOBE #1 — ROBERT KIRKMAN, writer of WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE, spins off his INVINCIBLE series into a new ongoing super-team book, and it RULES.
By now, you guys know that we’re huge fans of writer ROBERT KIRKMAN, the uber-talented comic creator behind books like WALKING DEAD, and INVINCIBLE, right?
So, when we saw that Kirkman was going to be spinning his super awesome, and always entertaining INVINCIBLE series out into a new companion series, well, all we could say was: about time!
The Guardians of the Globe (not to be confused with ‘of the Galaxy’), are the equivalent of the AVENGERS or JUSTICE LEAGUE in the realm of INVINCIBLE.
Of course, just like INVINCIBLE, Kirkman brings a unique edge to this team, and the characters on it, which makes the book such a fun read, and all we can say is if you’re already a fan of INVINCIBLE, then this is a must-read.
Never read INVINCIBLE or anything involving the Guardians of the Globe? This is a great place to start. A brand new ongoing series, featuring a cast of characters that’re cleverly written, with that trademark knack for world-building… trust us, you can’t go wrong.
Wanna go back and read more on INVINCIBLE or the GUARDIANS OF THE GLOBE? We have both the entire run of INVINCIBLE in trade paperback, as well as the limited series of GUARDING THE GLOBE in trade as well, to get you on board.

Thanos of Titan, the mad Eternal, has been released from Death’s domain. In return, he’s pledged to kill half the population of the universe using the most powerful weapons in existence: the Infinity Gems. If he obtains them all, Thanos will rule all he surveys!
With a plot summary like that, how can you say no to this one-shot of THANOS awesomeness?

THIEF OF THIEVES TP VOL.1 — THE FIRST VOLUME OF NICK SPENCER (MORNING GLORIES, INFINITE VACATION, BEDLAM) and ROBERT KIRKMAN’S (WALKING DEAD, INVINCIBLE) ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY!
Confirmed To Be A New AMC TV Series!
Love BREAKING BAD? Read this comic!
Nick Spencer. Robert Kirkman. Two of the biggest names at IMAGE COMICS today, and two of the most talented creators working in the field. You put those two together, and you KNOW you’re going to be getting something that kicks a whole lotta ass.
THIEF OF THIEVES definitely lives up to the hype, and we are totally amped to see what many of you who’ve been waiting for trade on this one are going to think about it!
Meet Conrad Paulson. He lives a secret double life as master thief Redmond. There is nothing he can’t steal, nothing he can’t have..except for the life he left behind.
Now with a grown son he hardly knows, and an ex-wife he never stopped loving, Conrad must try to piece together what’s left of his life, before the FBI finally catch up to him.. but it appears they’re the least of his worries.
While we don’t want to tell you much more, as it’ll spoil one of the big twists that sets this series up, we will tell you this: if you’ve loved what Kirkman’s done with WALKING DEAD and INVINCIBLE, and are totally hooked on Spencer’s MORNING GLORIES, then we are sure you’re going to be all about THIEF OF THIEVES.

GREEN LANTERN #0 BRINGS THE BIG DEBUT AND THE ORIGINS OF THE BRAND NEW GREEN LANTERN OF EARTH, BAZ!
THE RISE OF THE THIRD ARMY CONTINUES!
This Wednesday’s GREEN LANTERN #0 may be one of the biggest of the NEW 52′s ZERO  month line-up, as it serves as the official origins and debut of the new Green Lantern of Earth, BAZ.
As we saw last week in the GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1, Sinestro and Hal Jordan have got their hands pretty darn full with the recently re-powered BLACK HAND and the arrival of the Guardians’s THIRD ARMY… so, who’s going to fill the void as the new Green Lantern of Earth?
A mysterious newcomer known only as Baz.
In this week’s GREEN LANTERN #0, not only are new readers given a great opportunity to jump aboard the title, but we’re shown the origins of the new Green Lantern, and what his motivations are.
Folks, make sure you snag a copy of this one, as with any of Geoff Johns’s killer GL stuff, this is going to be a stellar storyline, and issue #0 is a great spot to get on board.

JONATHAN HICKMAN’S MANHATTAN PROJECTS VOL.1 SCIENCE BAD TRADE PAPERBACK BRINGS THE ALTERNATE HISTORY SCI-FI AWESOME OF EINSTEIN, THE ATOM BOMB, AND INTER-DIMENSIONAL TRAVEL!
A MUST-READ!
We’re huge fans of writer JONATHAN HICKMAN. His work on stuff like PAX ROMANA, NIGHTLY NEWS, and in the realm of Marvel, FANTASTIC FOUR and SECRET WARRIORS, has wowed us for quite some time now, and his two new IMAGE series: MANHATTAN PROJECTS and SECRET are both AMAZING reads.
In MANHATTAN PROJECTS, Hickman and the uber-talented Nick Pitarra (THE RED WING) are telling a story that is straight-up addictive. We love everything about this, from the amazing artwork to the layered plotting, it’s just good comics, folks.
What if the research and development department created to produce the first atomic bomb was a front for a series of other, more unusual programs? What if the atom bomb was the most mundane thing they produced, and the public had no idea of the armies of cybernetic samurai killers, or universe-destroying doomsday devices?
The Manhattan Projects answers this question, and along the way, weaves historical fact with otherworldly fiction. Whether it’s the take on Einstein, or Martin Oppenheimer, the MANHATTAN PROJECTS does for the world of science and war what Alan Moore’s LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN did for the literary greats.
You will LOVE this. Trust us!

ROAD TO OZ #1 BRINGS ANOTHER STELLAR JOURNEY INTO OZ FROM MARVEL COMICS & SKOTTIE YOUNG!
The Oz comics from Marvel have been one of the most consistently awesome treats we see each year, and folks, we really can’t give these little masterpieces enough hype, ’cause they deserve every bit of it.
Skottie Young’s dreamy, surrealist style of artwork is a perfect match to Eric Shanower’s perfect adaptations and expansions on the original Oz tales, and we cannot get enough.
In this Wednesday’s ROAD TO OZ #1, dusty Kansas roads suddenly turn into magic highways, and you know it’s a safe bet that one of them is the road to Oz, right?
But, which one?
Dorothy’s off on another fantastic adventure, and Toto’s along for the ride.
This time their companions are strange — an old homeless guy with a magic magnet and a mentally-challenged child named Button-Bright.
ROAD TO OZ is the kind of all-ages book that you or I can appreciate for the amazing artwork, and timeless sense of storytelling, but also the kind of fun, and family-friend read you can pass onto kids.
Awesome stuff, Third Eye Faithful, snag yourself a copy this Wednesday!

Animal Man has been one of the NEW 52 series we’ve raved the most about since it’s launch, and folks, Jeff Lemire continues to make this book one of the biggest must-reads on the stands, with it’s unique style of down-to-earth slice-of-life drama-centric superhero storytelling and the over-the-top, almost Lovecraftian sense of horror and supernatural that surrounds it. It really is a unique kind of read, and we love every second of it.
So, now, in this week’s issue #0, you’re being given the perfect opportunity to jump on board, and find out why we love the book so much. Plus: we’re shown what the secret history of Animal Man is, and how Buddy Baker got his powers!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #693 *WHO IS ALPHA CHAPTER 2* – The 50th Anniversary of Spider-Man Continues, as one of the best arcs in Slott’s run keeps on!
Dan Slott has been really working magic on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN for the last couple of years, ever since the BIG TIME arc began, and the recent 50th Anniversary arc with the new character ALPHA has to be one of the coolest new directions for Slott’s run that we’ve seen yet.
I mean, Spidey’s never taken a sidekick before, right? So, it’s kinda cool to see this take on the character, and where things are going from there.
Ramos, as always ,looks freakin’ crazy awesome on Spidey, bringing some great pop and vibrancy to the book, as Slott’s writing captures everything we love about Spider-Man and his supporting cast.
We really can’t recommend this enough, as it continues to be one of the best Marvel monthly series on the stands, and if you’re not on board yet, hopping on with chapter 1 of this current arc in last month’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692 is the perfect way to get into it.

SWAMP THING #0 — THE ORIGINS OF ALEC HOLLAND AND ANTON ARCANE ARE REVEALED! JUMP ON BOARD THIS FANTASTIC SERIES WRITTEN BY BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS writer SCOTT SNYDER
Just like Animal Man, previously mentioned above, SWAMP THING is another of the NEW 52 that we’ve been raving about since issue #1. This series just keeps getting better, and better, and the tone and feel that Snyder has managed to capture on this book is unreal.
A perfect blend of classic DCU superhero storytelling, and the creepy horror of early Vertigo like SANDMAN and Alan Moore’s own SWAMP THING, Snyder’s take on the mythos of SWAMP THING have been one of our favorites month to month.
Now, with this Wednesday’s SWAMP THING #0, we’re getting to learn the mysteries and origins of not just Alec Holland, but Anton Arcane as well.
Throughout history, Arcane has slaughtered the champions of the Red and the Green, and only Alec has escaped death — but for how much longer?

AQUAMAN VOL.1 THE TRENCH HARDCOVER ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY COLLECTING THE FIRST SIX ISSUES OF THE KICK-ASS NEW 52 AQUAMAN SERIES FROM GREEN LANTERN & BLACKEST NIGHT writer GEOFF JOHNS
The AQUAMAN NEW 52 series has been one of the best reads out of the bunch, and continues to keep us hooked with it’s top notch storytelling, and artwork from creative team GEOFF JOHNS and IVAN REIS.
The first six issues of this red-hot ongoing series are now collected into graphic novel format with this Wednesday’s AQUAMAN VOL.1 THE TRENCH, and we are totally stoked for you guys to get into this one!
The mix of subtle humor which addresses the way that readers may view AQUAMAN (as not being very relevant), is perfect in combination with the way that Geoff Johns just reminds us how badass of a character Aquaman can really be. I mean, he rules a kingdom that makes up most of the Earth. That’s pretty freakin’ cool.
And, in the NEW 52, AQUAMAN has renounced the throne of Atlantis — but now, from a forgotten corner of the ocean emerges… THE TRENCH! A Lovecraftian Dagon-like nightmare of fish people with razor sharp teeth who live to do one thing: consume.
It’s up to Aquaman to beat ‘em back into the depths of the sea, but will his focus on this new enemy open him up to new attacks from the classic Aquaman foe, Black Manta?
GET THIS BOOK, Third Eye Faithful! We cannot recommend AQUAMAN enough, it’s truly one of the best of the best.

MIND THE GAP continues this Wednesday, and folks, if you’re not already on board with this stellar new IMAGE series, now is the time to get caught up. From the storytelling to the artwork, MIND THE GAP is one of the best damn IMAGE books on the stands, and we are totally hooked.

PHANTOM STRANGER #0 BRINGS THE DEBUT OF ONE OF THE NEW ONGOING NEW 52 SERIES AND A RETURN OF ONE OF DC’S MOST ICONIC SUPERNATURAL CHARACTERS! PLUS: THE SPECTRE!
PHANTOM STRANGER is one of those cult favorite DC characters that has just been begging for a relaunch, and we are so, so pumped to see him back in action with this Wednesday’s PHANTOM STRANGER #0 dropping.
When we last saw the NEW 52 incarnation of this iconic supernaturally-charged character, it was in the pages of this summer’s DC NEW 52 freebie. Now, we find out just what happened to the PHANTOM STRANGER after that fateful tale.
Who has been sacrificed? Who is guilty? Who can save us? And who… is the Phantom Stranger?
Some MAJOR players in the DC NEW 52 are set to be unveiled here, and we have a strong hunch that the names SPECTRE, DOCTOR FATE, and more are going to be popping up.
We were lucky enough to get a look at some early shots on this one, and damn, Brent Anderson’s (ASTRO CITY) artwork looks stunning! The book is creepy, and compelling, and captures that same vibe as Snyder’s SWAMP THING and Lemire’s ANIMAL MAN, perfectly.

BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE #3 CONTINUES ONE OF OUR FAVORITE BEFORE WATCHMEN SERIES THIS WEDNESDAY
BEFORE WATCHMEN: SILK SPECTRE is really turning out to be one of my favorites amongst the awesomeness that has been BEFORE WATCHMEN. Both Cooke and Conner are bringing their A+ games in a BIG way here, and in doing so, are telling the story that feels the truest to the original WATCHMEN graphic novel.
Focusing on the second Silk Spectre, as she first takes on the role of the heroine from her mother, this series really brings a unique feel to the BEFORE WATCHMEN stories, and we’re loving it. It’s a dark story, with the kind of vibe of an old romance comic with seriously dark, dark undertones.
Darwyn Cooke’s writing is perfect and spot-on here, and Amanda Conner’s artwork has never looked better. She does a perfect job of bringing the book to life in a major way, while at the same time playing within the aesthetic and layouts of the original Gibbons stuff.
Just damn good comics, Third Eye Faithful, BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE rules!

SPAWN #223 — THE WALKING DEAD TRIBUTE COVER HAS ARRIVED! FINALLY!
The direction of SPAWN since issue #220 has been pretty darn cool, as McFarlane takes the series back to it’s roots a bit, and the homage covers he’s been doing have been top notch.
Last month, IMAGE accidentally advertised that #222 would have the above-pictured totally awesome WALKING DEAD homage cover with SPAWN standing in for RICK GRIMES.
And, we were just as bummed as you guys when it turned out that it wasn’t that cover!
But, now, this week, for real, issue #223 is rocking the WALKING DEAD tribute cover, and hot damn, isn’t it awesome? :)

STAFF PICKS
STEVE: GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 - Man, this RISE OF TEH THIRD ARMY stuff is gonna be crucially rad. What an awesome read!
TRISH:  GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 - I’m not normally on the GL bandwagon, but this was great. Totally has that buzz of BLACKEST NIGHT excitement around it and was just as good!
TORMA:  GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 - GEOFF JOHNS comes back with a vengeance on this one, and delivers what could outdo COURT OF OWLS as the best DC arc this year. READ IT!
SHAUN:  CAPTAIN MARVEL #3 - I’m consistently impressed by how great this book is! Carol Danvers is quickly becoming a must-not-miss character in the Marvel Universe.

RYAN:  GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL #1 - Geoff Johns brings on a brand new Lantern War with this issue to continue in all of the current Lantern books. Can’t wait to see what this new Lantern brings to the battle.
