This Week's Highlights at Third Eye Comics for Wednesday 9/26/12

Grant Morrison (ALL STAR SUPERMAN, THE INVISIBLES, BATMAN AND ROBIN, WE3) teams up with DARICK ROBERTSON (THE BOYS, TRANSMETROPOLITAN) TO DELIVER OUR NEXT FAVORITE IMAGE SERIES!

It was really hard to pick the book I was most excited about this week. I had to go with Happy, just because of how major a Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson fan I am, but damn, it was tough choosing between this and Talon as the top pick!
Happy is everything that I love about comics, Third Eye Faithful. This is the kind of comic that sparked my passion for the hobby when I was a 13-year old kid stumbling onto Preacher and the Invisibles. It's smart, it's cutting edge, it's subversive, it's entertaining, and dammit: it's something you can only do in the medium of comics.
In short: Happy makes me pretty happy.
Okay, now that we got the obligatory Happy pun out of the way, lets start talking about what this one's all about.
Happy is by a creative team that is enough alone to make you want to read this comic. Grant Morrison, the legendary writer behind modern classics like ALL STAR SUPERMAN, WE3, THE INVISIBLES, JLA: TOWER OF BABEL, BATMAN AND ROBIN, BATMAN AND SON, BATMAN RIP, and so much freakin' more... and then on art, we've got DARICK ROBERTSON, the man who brought us two of the most disturbingly entertaining comics of all-time: TRANSMETROPOLITAN and THE BOYS.
If that doesn't excite you already, then wait'll you hear just WHAT Happy is all about.
Meet Nick Sax -- a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless love, eczema and betrayal.
With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick and his world will be changed forever this Christmas...
..by a tiny blue horse called Happy.
Morrison does what he does best: weaving the real and the unreal into a compelling story that blurs the two until they're hard to separate. He brings a sense of fantasy genre fantastica to a gritty, depraved crime noir and makes it compelling from page one and onward.
If you're a fan of THE BOYS, TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE INVISIBLES, PREACHER, CHEW, or heck, just damn good comics in general: you gotta get this book.
Trust us, Third Eye Faithful, you're going to love it. This book gets the Third Eye Seal of Approval in a major way, and we can pretty much promise you: you will love it.

TALON #0 DEBUTS HTIS WEDNESDAY BEGINNING A NEW ONGOING SERIES FROM BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS WRITER SCOTT SNYDER!
A MUST-READ!
Okay, by now, I don't think I need to tell you guys who Scott Snyder is. But, just in case: Snyder's quite possibly one of the best damn writers working in comics today. He did this past year's COURT OF OWLS arc in BATMAN, totally blew our minds before that with BLACK MIRROR, and knocks us out every month with AMERICAN VAMPIRE.
In other words: he's pretty awesome. The world that Snyder built with the Court of Owls arc in BATMAN really was one of the best Batman storylines we've read in a loooong time, and one of the most interesting things we've seen done with the character.
Now, Snyder returns to the nest with a brand new ongoing NEW 52 series featuring the Court of Owls' unstoppable killing machine: TALON.
Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon to ever escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin just wants to live a normal life.. but that's impossible, why you might ask? He's being hunted by his former masters in the Court of Owls.
Featuring the AMAZING artwork of Guillem March, and trust me, Third Eye Faithful, I can't stress enough how great Guillem's art looks here, seriously: we're talking Capullo level goodness! Talon not only reads fantastic, but it looks great too.
Plus: you and I both know that one of the most exciting and compelling things in the realm of comics recently has been the introduction of the Court of Owls, and I, for one, can't wait to read more about these guys.
Snag yourself a copy of TALON #0 this Wednesday!
Wanna go back and read more on the COURT OF OWLS? We've got the entire run, issues 1-12, in stock now, as well as the hardcover collecting issues 1-7. Either way, we recommend it as one of the best BATMAN stories we've read in quite some time!

GAMBIT #3 -- THE NEW GAMBIT SERIES FROM MARVEL IS FANTASTIC! A MUST-READ FROM THE CURRENT CO-WRITER OF THIEF OF THIEVES!
Dude, the new GAMBIT series from Marvel is really turning out to be one of the most exciting new reads we've seen from the House of Ideas this year. Asmus and Mann are really delivering one hell of a book here, and this is truly everything that you could ever want out of a GAMBIT comic.
No angst, no love triangles, no bizarre quests for redemption, just Gambit doing what he bests: stealing the hell out of everybody. Seriously. We freakin' love it!
Asmus, who recently started on THIEF OF THIEVES for an arc with WALKING DEAD's ROBERT KIRKMAN, is doing a fantastic job of bringing a gritty, real world sense of espionage, intrigue, and outright theft to the world of the Marvel Universe, and we're loving every second of it.
In issue #3, Gambit's desperately searching for a means to destroy the pilfered artifact that's cursed him, and his quest leads him deep into the jungles of Guatemala with a mysterious ally, in search of a lost temple.
Of course, Gambit always ends up getting sold out... soooo, we'll see how this turns out for our hero.
Wanna get caught up? We've got issues 1 & 2 in stock now to get you up to this week's #3.

AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER THE PROMISE VOL.3 -- Dark Horse's killer series of all new AVATAR stories that bridge the gap between the original series and LEGEND OF KORRA continues!
You guys know we're pretty big fans here at Third Eye of the AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER series, and while we've been totally loving the new series, that's still not enough to scratch our Avatar itch!
Luckily, Dark Horse has the hook-up for us in the form of these stellar graphic novels that bridge the storyline gaps between the original series and the Legend of Korra.
This third installment brings THE PROMISE to it's startling conclusion, and we cannot wait to sit down and read the entire thing.
The Harmony Restoration Movement has failed, and the four nations are plunged back into war! In the midst of the battle, can Aang and Fire Lord Zuko mend the rift between them, or will Aang be forced to take actions that can't be undone?
This is a fantastic read, and features story from AVATAR creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
Wanna get caught up? We've got plenty of copies of AVATAR THE PROMISE VOL.1 and VOL.2 in stock now to get you current for this week's volume 3.

AMERICAN VAMPIRE HC VOL.4 ARRIVES THIS WEDNESDAY! FIND OUT WHY BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS writer SCOTT SNYDER'S AMERICAN VAMPIRE IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE READS ON THE STANDS!
American Vampire is one of the comics we look forward to most each and every month. The quality on this stunning series has not slipped one bit, and I'll tell ya: it just gets better and better.
Written by the super-talented SCOTT SNYDER, the writer behind BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS, BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR, and the current NEW 52 Swamp Thing, AMERICAN VAMPIRE is the freshest take on bloodsuckers that we've seen in a long time.
Imagine a generational story, like Goodfellas or Once Upon A Time In America, but with vampires. The story begins in the '20s, with flashbacks to the origins of a sinister character known as Skinner Sweet: the first vampire to be born on American soil.
From there, we're introduced to a cast of characters that are so well put together, and so well thought out, that we're now hooked on what happens to them next.
The closest comparison in terms of storytelling, and scale to AMERICAN VAMPIRE I can give is Garth Ennis's PREACHER. This is a big story, with strong characters, and sometimes shocking moments, that keeps you hooked until the end of each and every issue.
Wanna get into it? We've got the first trade paperback collection in stock now to get you started, as well as volumes 2 and 3 to catch you up to this week's volume 4.
Trust us: you'll love this one!

AQUAMAN #0 -- THE ORIGINS OF AQUAMAN AND HIS FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE ATLANTEANS ARE REVEALED HERE IN THIS PERFECT JUMPING ON POINT TO ONE OF THE BEST DC NEW 52 SERIES OUT NOW!
The DC Zero Month has been a pretty awesome thing so far, providing great spots to jump onto some of the best in the NEW 52 DCU, while at the same time serving up some pretty kick-ass origin stories that illustrate a lot of the new changes and differences in the NEW 52 DCU.
This week, AQUAMAN #0 drops, and lets be real: anytime there's a new issue of AQUAMAN, that's a pretty darn good thing. I mean, this book has quickly become one of the best of the NEW 52, and keeps us hooked month in and month out.
Geoff Johns, the writer of GREEN LANTERN and JUSTICE LEAGUE, is doing some of his best work here, and the artwork of IVAN REIS just makes the book even better as it takes the art and storytelling to a Jim Lee-style of dynamic action.
In this week's issue #0, we see the first appearance of Atlantis -- and Aquaman's first encounter with the Atlanteans! How will this story of Arthur's past set the stage for his future? That's what we 're going to find out!
Been waiting for the perfect spot to jump onto AQUAMAN? Third Eye Faithful, this is it.
Wanna backtrack to the earlier issues? We've got the AQUAMAN VOL.1 THE TRENCH hardcover in stock now to get you up to speed on the first 6 issues, and then we've got 7-12 in stock now to bring you current.

STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION / DOCTOR WHO ASSIMILATION TRADE PAPERBACK VOL.1
Meet artist JK WOODWARD at the ANNAPOLIS COMIC-CON on 10/27!
Star Trek: The Next Generation / Doctor Who has been one of the best damn crossovers we've seen... in ANY genre or medium.. in quite some time.
Seriously, at first glance: there's a novelty appeal, sure, but dammit, IDW, you managed to turn this one into a fantastic story from start to finish. We're impressed!
When the Federation's most terrifying enemy strikes an unholy alliance with one of the Doctor's most hated antagonists, the result is devastation on a cosmic scale. Spanning the ends of space and time itself, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance.
And, hey: it's Star Trek. It's Doctor Who. How can this not be awesome?
Make sure you snag yourself a copy of the trade paperback this week at Third Eye, so you can get it signed by series artist JK WOODWARD at the ANNAPOLIS COMIC-CON on October 27th!

CAPTAIN MARVEL #4 -- The NEW CAPTAIN MARVEL series may be the best take on Carol Danvers yet!
The new CAPTAIN MARVEL series from Marvel has really turned out to be one of our favorite riffs on Carol Danvers yet!
The creative team of Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy is on point, and they've brought a fresh, and dynamic feel to the book that's totally unique. It has that same kind of energy and innovation that a title like Mark Waid's DAREDEVIL does.
The excitement continues, as this Marvel NOW early bird puts Captain Marvel in the middle of an all-out war.
Wanna get caught up? We've got issues 1 & 2 in stock now to catch you up to this week's #3.

 DEBRIS #3 -- A POST-APOCALYPTIC STEAMPUNK MASTERPIECE CONTINUES!

This mini-series has really turned out to be one of my favorite things artist Riley Rossmo has done. I love the look and feel of DEBRIS, and am totally hooked on the stellar story that Kurtis Wiebe (PETER PANZERFAUST) has put together here.
The only way I can describe DEBRIS is that it's like a really awesome video game from the era of Sega Dreamcast brought to life. What I mean by that is that it has all those cool action-rpg trappings that games like PANZER DRAGOON, LUNAR SILVER STAR STORY, and even anime like Nausicaa brought to the screen. And we love it!
Set in a dystopian, distant future on a ravaged planet Earth, we're shown a planet that's covered by layer upon layer of junk and garbage, and the ancient spirits known as Colossals who inhabit the broken down shells of tanks, buildings and more to form giant steampunk-looking dragons.
At the heart of DEBRIS is a young hunter who's just graduated her way into saving the human race, and it's up to her and her trusty riflesword to hold these beasts at bay while humanity rushes to find their salvation.
KICK-ASS stuff, and with RILEY ROSSMO joining us on FRIDAY OCTOBER 26th for the big BEDLAM #1 release party, this is a great opportunity to get caught up on one of his best works and bring it in to the signing as well!
Wanna get up to speed? We've got issues 1 & 2 in stock now to catch you up to Wednesday's #3.

THE FLASH #0 TELLS THE ORIGINS OF BARRY ALLEN, HIS RETURN, AND HIS PLACE IN THE NEW 52! A GREAT JUMPING ON POINT FOR ONE OF OUR FAVORITE NEW 52 SLEEPER HITS!
More DC Zero Month goodness, and we gotta tell ya, folks: The Flash has been surprisingly one of the best of the NEW 52. The storylines that've been building in this book have been top notch, and Francis Manapul makes each and every issue look downright incredible.
This Wednesday, the FLASH #0 shows the long-awaited NEW 52 origins of the Flash, and his place in the NEW 52. While we haven't read this one yet, could we possibly see some hints at what's going on with Wally West here?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #694 *WHO IS ALPHA? PT 3* -- The countdown to AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 continues, as Dan Slott's killer WHO IS ALPHA arc keeps on rocking!
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has been growing and growing as one of the best monthly Marvel books on the stands ever since Dan Slott came on board as the regular writer with issue #648, and I gotta tell you: I'm pretty excited about the big things that are set to go down in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #698-#700.
The current arc of AMAZING is the perfect spot to jump on board the monthly, beginning with chapter 1 of WHO IS ALPHA in the 50th Anniversary issue AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692.
You know this book is at the top of it's game when it's Slott and Ramos working together, and the idea of Parker taking on a sidekick is such an exciting, and new concept, that we've been hooked on each and every one of these.
I think the highest praise I can give the book is that it reads like Spider-man SHOULD read. It's fast, it's funny, it's clever, and it's a big, bold Marvel superhero comic that has the best of the most infamous bad guys and the raddest of the new characters.
All around good stuff, and with big stuff cooking in the next arc that kicks off in #698, we cannot recommend the series enough.

THE TOWER CHRONICLES #1 - FROM LEGENDARY FILMS & THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF "THE DARK KNIGHT" -- Do NOT sleep on this incredible new series featuring comics superstars MATT WAGNER (GRENDEL, MAGE) and SIMON BISLEY (LOBO, DEATH DEALER)...
This is the best new release you may not have heard about!
Third Eye Faithful, if I had one book to pick out this week and say: this is going to be majorly overlooked by many, but has potential to be a major hit, I'd say it's this week's TOWER CHRONICLES #1.
Why? It's a gorgeous book. It features a writer who's done some legendary (no pun intended) work in comics. It even has a gorgeous Jim Lee cover. But, in the midst of all the major stuff going down in comics this Fall, it's easy for a book, even an amazing one like this, to get lost in the shuffle.
Which is why we're going to tell you all about it, Third Eye Faithful! This book is AWESOME. The artwork is freakin' insane, I can't tell you how much I missed Simon Bisley, and Matt Wagner is bringing his A game.
Featuring a lead character created by the chairman of LEGENDARY, and the man who produced THE DARK KNIGHT, the TOWER CHRONICLES creates a new mythology on familiar worlds through a unique take on the bounty hunter storyline.
This is the first in a trilogy of books that explore the history and contemporary adventures of John Tower, a supernatural bounty hunter with a grim and secretive past that haunts his every action. Written by GRENDEL creator Matt Wagner, and featuring Judge Dredd and Lobo artist Simon Bisley, the TOWER CHRONICLES really does raise the bar high for supernatural action/adventure stories.
In short: it's a bad-ass story about a demon-hunting bounty hunter, and it has really really killer art.
Folks: give this one a shot, we think you'll dig the hell out of it!

HIT-GIRL #3 -- Mark Millar and John Romita JR's HIT-GIRL solo series continues to keep us hooked!
So, pretty much anything MARK MILLAR does, we're going to be reading, 'cause lets face it: he's one of the best. I mean, when it comes to getting the most sheer entertainment out of a comic, there's few guys who do it better than Millar.
So, of course, we loved KICK-ASS, and loved KICK-ASS 2 even more, but I'll tell ya: HIT-GIRL might be our favorite yet. Not just because we love the character, but because it's really some of the most cutting edge stuff Millar and Romita JR have done yet in the realm of KICK-ASS.
Taking place in between KICK ASS and KICK-ASS 2, this bridges the two stories, and explains just what was going on with HIT-GIRL after the events of KICK-ASS.
And, of course, it's hilarious, it's bloody, and it's totally fun. Plus: we learn just what went down with the Red Mist in between the events of KICK-ASS and KICK-ASS 2.

SUPERMAN #0 -- THIS is why you need to start reading SUPERMAN! NEW CREATIVE TEAM! NEW DIRECTION! HOLY CRAP, THIS IS GREAT!
I'll tell you, Third Eye Faithful, I haven't really been the biggest fan of the current run of SUPERMAN. While I've felt it's been pretty solid, and it's been great, I've been more into ACTION COMICS.
But, I think that's going to change with this week's SUPERMAN #0, which features a pretty kick-ass new creative team, and a new direction.
Scott Lobdell, the writer who's been really bringing a sense of awesome to other NEW 52 titles like SUPERBOY and TEEN TITANS teams up with the super-dynamic and highly talented artist KENNETH ROCAFORT to start a new run on the Man of Steel, and we cannot wait.
This special zero issue takes us back to the days when Jor-El learned the truth about Krypton's imminent destruction, as well as an introduction to the Eradicators.
We love the lore they're building in the NEW 52 for SUPERMAN, and we really dig the direction things are heading. I cannot wait to see how awesome Rocafort's art looks on this book, and Lobdell is just the right choice to turn the action level of SUPERMAN up.

BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS #3 -- THE COMEDIAN vs. OZYMANDIAS?
The BEFORE WATCHMEN books have been pretty top notch so far, but we're especially digging the OZYMANDIAS series, where the original editor of WATCHMEN, Len Wein, crafts an origin story that totally fits the character perfectly.
Plus: Jae Lee on art! How awesome is that? We're huge Jae Lee fans, and seeing him do interior art again is a major treat.

FROM THE WRITER OF BUTCHER BAKER, THE RIGHTEOUS MAKER COMES THE MILKMAN MURDERS! A DARK TALE OF SUBURBAN HORROR!
Here's a hidden gem that we just had to show some love, 'cause it's such a fun read, albeit... disturbingly so. Joe Casey, the writer behind BUTCHER BAKER RIGHTEOUS MAKER, crafted a horrifying tale of suburban life gone wrong with the MILKMAN MURDERS.
Meet mild-mannered housewife, Barbara Vale, who, after meeting her family, you'll understand why she sits in the center of violence and misery.
This slice of Americana brings a horrifying look at the every day terror of the mundane, and what happens when one disenfranchised housewife finds herself awakened to a violent new calling.
A fantastic read, Third Eye Faithful, snag yourself a copy of this punch-you-in-the-throat kinda horror comic. Especially if you're a fan of stuff like CROSSED, then you'll love this.

TEEN TITANS #0 -- THE ORIGINS OF TIM DRAKE IN THE NEW 52! RED ROBIN'S STORY IS REVEALED HERE! A MUST-READ!
Oh man, here's a good one! I'm super stoked for the Zero issue of TEEN TITANS, 'cause lets face it: Tim Drake is awesome. Plus: Brett Booth handling the art on this one? Dude! This is killer!
This issue focuses on the NEW 52 origins of Tim Drake, and how a would-be olympic star and compute genius went on to become Batman's third Robin.
Apparently, there's some major differences in the transition from Tim Drake to Robin here compared to the orginal origins, and our curiosity is killing us to find out what they are!
Plus: TEEN TITANS has been one of the better NEW 52 titles, with  fa fantastic artwork on each issue, and some great, dynamic storytelling, so if you've been thinking about jumping on board, this is a great spot to start.
Wanna catch up on earlier issues? We've got 1-12 of TEEN TITANS in stock now to get you caught up to current.

You know, for the longest time now, these have been one of my favorite things about fall. The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror. Both the episodes, and the comics. Heck, I think I've actually grown to prefer the comics.
Bongo does such an awesome job with their Simpsons stuff, and anytime we get a chance to give them props, we're going to. This week's TREEHOUSE OF HORROR #18, features some pretty awesome names, including upcoming Third Eye guest GERRY DUGGAN (writer of the new Marvel NOW Deadpool and INFINITE HORIZON), and his Infinite Horizon artist PHIL NOTO. I'm a big fan of David Finch's art, and his work on THE DARK KNIGHT, has been some of his best looking stuff yet. So, when we saw he'd be delivering one of the most classic moments in Batman's history with this week's DARK KNIGHT #0.. we knew it'd be great.

STITCHED #8 -- THE NEXT ARC IN GARTH ENNIS'S KILLER MUMMY SURVIVAL HORRO SERIES ARRIVES! A MUST-READ FOR FANS OF CROSSED!
Dude, STITCHED is one of those AVATAR PRESS sleeper hits that has been quietly creeping up our to-read pile for a while now, and hot dammit: we're really looking forward to this week's issue #8!
Ennis, as you may know, is the same writer who brought us the awesomeness that is CROSSED, THE BOYS, PREACHER, and many more... so, it's only a natural fit for him to be exploring two of his best genres: horror and war stories.
And, Stitched is HORROR, Third Eye Faithful. Man, this book is dark. Plus: not zombies, but killer mummies? How cool is that? Something different is always a plus.
In this week's issue #8, the relentless curse of the Stitched extends beyond the arid desert of Afghanistan to other parts of the world. On a Sri-Lanka bound cargo ship, businessman Rashid Salid and his crew of black market cut-throats are overseeing the delivery of a very secret and very deadly payload. But Salid's payday may never come, as a team of American Navy SEALS are on a black ops mission to secure that cargo for themselves.
But... what happens when that cargo is an ancient evil that wreaks pain and misery upon all who come into it's reach?
This next arc will at last reveal the terrifying origins of the Stitched.
Gory as all get out, a blast to read, we recommend giving STITCHED a shot, Third Eye Faithful!

HIGHER EARTH #5 FEATURING ARTWORK BY MORNING GLORIES ARTIST JOE EISMA! ONE OF THE BEST SCI-FI COMICS WE'RE READING!

Man, we are loving the heck out of Sam Humphries and Boom! Studios's sci-fi epic HIGHER EARTH, and with Sam about to do a huge run of UNCANNY X-FORCE for the MARVEL NOW relaunch, now is the time to get into this killer book... so you can say you read it before it was cool. ;)
In the world of HIGHER EARTH, a story that unfolds in a very SLIDERS meets DOCTOR WHO meets BLADE RUNNER kind of way, shows us a soldier without an army, and a girl without a planet, traveling through the multiple Earths that keep getting discarded in favor of newer, higher ones with less problems, less pollution, and only the most elite who can afford to live there.
This issue delves into the mythos of Higher Earth, and explores the origins of not just our heroes, but the world of HIGHER EARTH itself.
One of our favorite new series of 2012, HIGHER EARTH continues to be a fantastic read.
Wanna get caught up? We've got issues 1-4 in stock now to get you current to Wednesday's #5.
