THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS @ THIRD EYE COMICS!

NEIL GAIMAN's BATMAN: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE CAPED CRUSADER DEBUTS IN THIS WEEK'S BATMAN #686!

Batman #686 is going to be the biggest BATMAN issue of the last 10 years. This, I can promise you. The reason why? It's Neil Gaiman is writing it. You know Neil Gaiman, right? The writer of one of the most critically acclaimed series ever in SANDMAN, not to mention a prolific writer of many novels like AMERICAN GODS, but if none of this rings a bell, then the most recent thing from GAIMAN... he wrote the book CORALINE that the recent movie was based on. 

The issue? It's in the vein of Alan Moore's (WATCHMEN) "Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?" THIS ONE IS BIG! It's Neil Gaiman, for God's sake! And he's writing BATMAN! This is a recipe for pure success. So, now you're probably asking, "Okay, Steve, Okay, what is this book about?" It's pretty much very similar to what Moore did with WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW. It's the ultimate LAST BATMAN STORY, a way to close the 20th century's chapter of Batman stories, and allow for a new direction of Batman storytelling. Andy Kubert is going to be doing the artwork, and it's jaw-dropping.. I just read the preview pages of this, and I have to say.. it's a very subtle start, but HOLY CRAP, it's got me excited. The ultimate last word in Batman stories, this is a great final chapter for The Dark Knight.

He works an office job he hates, he dates women that he can't stand, and he's completely miserable with his day to day life. When his recreational drug use cancels out the medication that inhibits his power, he finds himself exploring the limits of his sick desires. And, now in issue 2, we get to mee the super-powered crime lord that he ratted out to avoid doing hard time. And what happens when a super-powered crimelord finds out one of his henchmen have been living in Witness Protection? Lots of people get killed!

It's kind of funny, but with a book like Spider-man, there's times when it's really good, and there's times when it's really bad.. but have you ever noticed that the times when it's really good are when JOHN ROMITA JR is doing the artwork? We've kind of caught onto this, and we gotta say, we're stoked to have him back on it. John Romita JR of KICK-ASS fame delivers some amazing pencils, and he makes the wallcrawler look and move just the way we like.

BATMAN RIP COLLECTED INTO HARDCOVER THIS WEDNESDAY!

Grant Morrison's epic deconstruction of the Dark Knight is now finally available in hardcover, and we'll have plenty in stock this Wednesday here at Third Eye. Collecting the entire RIP saga that ran through Batman 676-683, this beautiful hardcover gives you a seemless uninterrupted look at Morrison's piece by piece taking apart of Batman. Put together here in one big thick volume, you can now read this in sequence with the other two collections of Morrison's work, BATMAN AND SON, and BATMAN: THE BLACK GLOVE.

THE SWORD v.2 WATER  TP HITS THE RACKS THIS WEEK! 

One of the big new Image up and comers has been the Luna Brothers' The Sword. This is a FANTASTIC series, and if you're not already reading it... you gotta! If you need something to keep you entertained in between Walking Dead and Invincible trade paperbacks, then The Sword is just what the doctor ordered. A good blend of Highlander meets Kill Bill, the Sword follows the story of a young girl, her slaughtered family, a deep history, and her quest for revenge. The artwork is jawdropping, and the storytelling is top notch. If you're not familiar with the Lunas, then you might already know them from series like GIRLS and ULTRA.

SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING v.1 HC BRINGS ALAN MOORE GOODNESS!

Finally, a beautiful edition of one of the most influential '80S comics. This affordably priced hardcover collects the first book in Alan Moore's amazing Saga of the Swamp Thing work. DMZ v.6 "BLOOD IN THE GAME"  CONTINUES BRIAN WOOD'S AMAZING VERTIGO SERIES!

Brian Wood is a writer to take note of if you haven't already. He's put out a ton of great work, and at least two of his works are in our Top 10 of this decade. One of his longest running series, DMZ, is getting it's sixth installment this Wednesday in collected format. The story is all about a civil war taking place between the United States and the Free States of America. What're the Free States? Basically a gathering of random American militia groups who've gotten tired of the U.S interfering overseas, and they basically make their way across the country taking over small towns and cities. What happens is they end up in Manhattan, and the city is too big for both the Free States to take, and the U.S Army to defend... and what's left? A stalemate. Which is why Manhattan is the DMZ, and then, that leads us to the main character Matty Roth. 

He starts out as a naive photojournalist, and then slowly through the course of the series evolves into a hardened gonzo jouranlist reporting on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the DMZ.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN HC v.2  SOARS INTO THIRD EYE THIS WEDNESDAY!

Grant Morrison is one of the true masters of our medium. And one of the greatest feats he's ever accomplished in my eyes is reviving my interest in Superman. Sure, I'd enjoyed the Superman comics in spurts. A little John Byrne run here, a little Superman For All Seasons there... and then of course, later on, we had Geoff Johns who totally won me over with Superman and the Legion of Superheroes, and New Krypton. 

But before Johns came along, it was Morrison who got me with All-Star Superman. In the pages of All-Star Superman, he and Quitely (on art chores) take the very essence of Superman and make it shine through so well, that you'd feel like you were a kid in the '40s reading the series when it first made it's debut. The combination of smooth, stylized art and Morrison's ability to turn every corny Silver Age concept into something amazing makes All-Star Superman a must read.

The Roberts TP  - So, the Zodiac Killer and the Boston Strangler are roomies in a senior citizen home...

Nowadays, there's so many new releases coming out, it can be hard to catch everything. Sometimes some real gems slip through the cracks, and get overlooked. One of those was this summer's The Roberts. Just a two-part (each issue being 48 pages) little story with a morbid concept. The Zodiac Killer and the Boston Strangler are living out their remaining days in a retirement community. A definite must for those of you with a morbid curiosity and get a kick out of the weirdness of true crime. Click here  to read more!
